The story goes that at one time when churches never locked their doors, a watchman kept an eye on the building at night. These "churchwardens" couldn't be expected to go all night without a smoke, so they had pipes that were made with an exceptionally long stem so the smoke and the pipe wouldn't be in their line of sight as they watched after the church. As other smokers tried the "churchwarden's pipe" they found them to be exceptionally cool. Also known from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, churchwardens have become very popular in recent years.
