McClelland Frog Morton's Cellar

Frog Morton's Cellar is a smooth Latakia-based blend containing Virginias, but no Orientals, with the smoky leaf added in a moderate amount. But what makes this blend so unique is the addition, in each tin, of a cube cut from a stave from a whiskey barrel, which gently infuses the leaf with a subtle, tangy note that sets it apart from other English-style blends.

Frog mortons
Well being new to the world of pipe smoking, I've been trying to smoke as many different types of tobacco as I can. I've found I go back to frog mortons time and time again. It's a rich, easy smoking, flavorful smoke that satisfies every time. My favorite so far is the cellar blend. Earthy and dark yet so smooth at the same time. My everyday go to smoke.

Best Of All Worlds
I'm new to piping however Frog Morton's unique Blend of tobaccos makes me feel like a piping veteran. The Morton blends (I call the 'Tolkien Blends') keeps me wanting more. With the Cellar blend you get that whiskey and carmel flavor. There is a sweet taste and an even sweeter aroma that comes with each puff. I'm not sure how they did it but tongue bite is a none issue with this tobacco. It's smooth to smoke and my wife loves the smell. SOLD! Also the price can't be beat. I use to smoke cigars and for one cigar ($10) I can buy one tin and enjoy the tobacco over and over again. But with the cigar my smoke and $10 is gone in an hour. If you're new to piping I would highly recommend Frog Morton's Cellar blend because you won't have tongue bite (the main reason people stop smoking pipes).

Burns Hot!
Well,. I finally managed to break off a piece of that "Plug" in the middle of the tin, but when I lit up, the stuff caught fire - burned up completely and took my pipe with it! I've now lost three pipes this way - I give up! Not for the faint of heart or the pyrophobic! Smells good though!

Leather and Soap... revised.
I take it all back... anything negative that I said about this blend in my previous review is now retracted. Being the novice pipe smoker that I am, I wasn't prepared for the Latakia experience. I have since finished off the tin that I ordered and re-ordered more. I have now fallen in love with the Latakia and have sought out other blends with Latakia in them. This blend is a must try for anyone going from aromatics to English... just don't do like I did and think poorly of it the first time you try it. Ease into it... Think about it... Smell the tin... and then try it again later. If you do this, you'll fall in love with it.

Great flavorful smoke
This has become one of my favorite go-to smokes. Maybe not an all-day smoker, but the balance of a light aro with the body of a mellow english makes this a satisfying and enjoyable experience.

Absolutely love! One of my favorites that I always keep stock.

Frog Morton Cellar take my mind...
Frog Mortin does it again. Mellow, rich Latakia blend without an overpowering whiskey note. Virginias give it nice depth and mellowness. Top shelf tobacco!

It most certainly has a smooth mellow tone to it a really good smoke anytime of the day.

This is an amazing blend! My first English and taste of Latakia. This made me a English tobacco lover instantly. I love the smokey whiskey like flavor. Highly recommend...

raises eye brows.
Latakia sure but a mellow rich bowl with a not overbearing whiskey note. Great room note that even none smokers react to positively. As a local tobacco shop owner said when I gave him a bowl, "wow I could smoke this all day".

Smooth, rich, complex.
I've been smoking a pipe for 15 years. For whatever reason I've never explored any tinned tobaccos. I've always bought tobacco from my local tobacconist, and always stuck with the same 2-3 aromatic blends. Recently I've wanted something different (better). I've searched for a tobacco that doesn't burnt my palate (I'm a professional coffee taster by trade.) My research led me to English style blends, and this was recommended at the top of the list. Wow, what a pleasant surprise. Everything I had hoped for in a quality smoke. Rich, but mellow, smooth and flavorful. This tobacco is sweet with a slight whiskey note on the exhale. No harsh character whatsoever. I will definitely be buying more and look forward to trying out other Frog Morton blends.

Great smoke!!!
Great smoke, love the Latakias!!! First pipe I had was the Frog Morton Cellar, it has a wood chip in the can infused with whiskey from a whiskey barrel, that gives it flavor.

Great mellow Latakia blend
Great mellow tobacco. One of my favorite blends. I smoke it all day. Burns to ash in the bottom of the bowl.

Great blend
I used to be an aromatic smoker til I found this. Better than an aromatic because this will not give you tounge bite and has an aromatic flavor due to the whiskey imparted by the barrel staves. Great blend

Worth a try
Solid smoke, on the lighter side of my preferences but sometimes that's just the ticket. Nice aroma too.

This is just a great smoke. No casing or flavor that I can pick out (other than the whiskey). Smooth, slightly sweet and nice!

Outstanding Tobacco, Horrible Review Title
Let me preface this with the fact that I'm still new to this whole "pipe smoking" thing and for the past year I've been exploring blends that have taken my palate on a wild ride. Some were big and bombastic; some were reserved and shy; some sent me to be early, and some conspired to keep me from being able to taste anything for hours at a time. Each was "good" in its own right, but I'm trying to have an open enough palate to be able to appreciate the full depth of each flavor I encounter. Then along comes Frog Morton's Cellar. I was not required to wrap my head around some outrageous idea in order to appreciate it; it just made perfect sense from moment one. Even the charring light on the very first bowl was a memorable experience. After building the perfect ember (read: the best I can do thus far) and finding just the right draw to keep it at the perfect temperature, the oak of the barrel cube comes through beautifully and asks that I pour a glass of Glenlivet 12 (don't ask me why, but the 12 pairs better with this than the 18). I've heard some people say that they can't taste the oak, but I think that there's quite a bit that plays into that including (but not limited to) whether or not your pipe is properly rested, if you have recently smoked a perique-heavy blend in the pipe (just my hypothesis, mind you), temperature of the ember (don't be afraid to smoke it slightly warmer, IMHO), and whether you're starting with a clean palate. Once you find that sweet spot, though, you'll understand. I actually just ordered a pipe that will be dedicated specifically to this blend as I'm convinced that it's worthy of such an honor and would rather not other influences sharing their flavors when I'm trying to indulge in such a subtle and beautiful blend.

Buy the big one.
First take at pipe smoking. Loved it. Wish I'd have purchased the larger tin.

This stuff stinks but tastes so good!
Love this stuff! Cool burning, mello, and tasty. FMC is not an aromatic but a good transitional tobacco. I HATE the smell from the can though!!!!! Almost did not try it! FMC is not pleasant on the nose if you are used to smelling cased tobaccos, but don't let that keep you from trying it. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite smokes. Especially in the evening/night. Flavor I haven't found anywhere else. Very smooth. The subtle oriental pop intertwined with Latakia is a superb blend. I will Always keep this on hand.

Leather and Soap...
Okay, I'm missing something... I've searched YouTube and lots of forums regarding this blend. Finding a review that puts this blend in a negative light is hard to do. Everyone loves this stuff. So I can only guess that I've done something wrong. I bought two 3.5oz tins with the anticipation that I would love this stuff based on all the very positive reviews of it. I wish I hadn't. I've tried two bowls of this stuff now and I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. All I get when I smoke it is a very leathery/soapy taste in my mouth. It's like someone took an old leather shoe and coated it in some fragrant soap, blended it and stuck it in the can. I've been smoking aromatics for about a year now and thought I'd try the "gateway" blend to the English side of the pipe smoking world. If this is any precursor to other English blends, then I'll just stick with aromatics. I'll keep the two tins I bought and hope that I'll forget what they taste like a year or so from now, and then try it again. For now though, I'm sticking with aromatics.

Great Smoke
This is a great medium bodied smoke with sweet complexity backing up the smokey litakia. Also the 2-7 day shipping was 3 days for me so that was nice.

Wonderful purchase
My first english was Dunhill Nightcap. I still love Nightcap but for all those who may be skeptical about the whimsical label of Frog Morton, fear not. this has become my go-to for the alone nights outside around the fire. Love it!

Interestingly Satisfying
Hey guys I am quite new to the whole pipe smoking scene, but I did a bit of research and this particular tobac kept popping up in videos and the high reviews on here peaked my curiosity so I gave it a try. Upon opening the smell I can only describe as "deep" Its almost to me like a faint licquorice mixed with a wooden barrel, if that makes any sense...pleasant to the nostrils, in my opinion, I think the name is slighly offputting because who would want to smoke something that tastes like a cellar? On first thought I would certainly not. Overall though because I don't judge a book by its cover, I have tried it and like it. A good addition to my small starting collection. Also should be noted, in the tin I recieved an actual piece of wood in the mix I bought. Not sure if this was intentional or not but it seemed to add to the flavor so I'm not complaining! God bless Chris

So good, I purchased a new pipe for this blend alone.
Nice mild English blend, I think of "White Knight - Light" with a touch of sweetness. I had to purchase a new pipe for this blend alone. Definitely one of my new favorites. thanks guys :¬)

Very tasty good with a glass of whiskey..

Latakia with a bit of sweetness.
If you like Latakia, this blend will make you happy. It's a dark, rich, smokey tobacco, but the cube from the whiskey barrel adds just a bit of sweetness to it. Probably one of my favorite latakia blends.

fine smoke
This is a fine smoke, and I like to enjoy it with a glass of good bourbon, neat. Smokes great, burns cool. I just wish it were stronger. I find myself following this smoke up with a half a bowl or Night Cap to get my nic fix.

Outstanding tobacco!
I tried an english blend with a heavy amount of latakia some time back and thought it was way too "strong". I wanted to try a tobacco with a light amount of latakia. I was very surprised at how good this tobacco was. I chose it by reading these reviews. Thanks for the information. Very good stuff!

Sweet tooth
I am a fan of rich and flavorful Latakia forward English blends, but occasionally I find myself in the mood for something on the sweeter side. When this craving hits me I turn to Frog Morton's Cellar as it is still smoky and earthy as an English blend should be, yet the hint of whisky that has been infused into the tobacco gives this blend a slightly sweet taste. If you are a fan of English tobaccos, yet hate Aromatics, do not let this statement put you off. I would not say that this is an aromatic or even an English aromatic, just a slightly sweeter than normal Latakia/English blend. I absolutely love this tobacco and will continue to buy as much of it as I can to keep around for those days that I just have to have something a bit more on the sweet side.

Lady Loves FMC
On first opening I thought FMC reminiscent of smoke-flavored barbecue sauce-with a side of whiskey. After a few puffs I thought it was nothing to write home about, but as I got farther down in the bowl there were these wafts of Latakia & whiskey, intermixed in a balanced sort of way that made me convinced I'd not had enough. Indeed, before I had finished the bowl I knew this would be a regular smoke for me. Now, when trying a new tobacco, I find myself comparing it to FMC--whether it's as satisfying. I don't really concern myself with how many others don't like this, except to say I hope McClelland's never stops making it(as long as I'm around, at least). It's the only tobacco I absolutely crave.

Nice evening smoke, pairs well with C.S. Lewis.
I'm a novice pipe smoker so I have not tried very many blends. But thus far this has to be my absolute favorite, with MM965 a close second. This blend is definitely worth a good look.

Single Malt Tobacco
I am new to the world of pipe smoking and have been looking for the right tobacco. Frog Morton's Cellar exceeded my expectations! This tobacco reminds me of my favorite single malt scotch. It has a great smokey flavor and aroma. My search for the "right" tobacco is over.

Just an amazing smoke. This was my first latakia blend and I absolutely loved it! Enjoyable smoke from beginning to end and leaves you with a subtle campfire taste. Would be best to smoke on a crisp winter evening while enjoying a sky full of bright stars! Most definitely will buy this again.

FMC should be in ever cellar.
English Aromatic? finaly decided to pick up a tin just to see for myself what all the chatter was about. I put four 100 gram tins on my following order. My only wish is that it would become available in coins or flakes to slow down the experience and perhaps enrich the flavor just a touch.

Beginners Latakia
My first english blend. Very easy transition from all aros into english blends. Mild yet tangy taste. Its a good step ladder to more heavier Latakia blends.

My favorite
I did quite a bit of research when I first starting smoking a pipe, and this was the first tobacco I tried. At this point, I have tried 5-6 premium English Blends and a couple of Aeromatics. Frog Morton Cellar is still my favorite tobacco.

A well researched first choice
Admittedly, I am very new to the hobby of pipe smoking, and that being said I will do my best to review this well. I have done a lot of reading, watching, and listening to my pipe peers and decided a full aromatic wouldn't be a good first choice of tobacco. Frog Morton had been very highly praised and with a great price point to boot. I decided to try it. At first I tried my churchwarden, but it seemed a bit too hot to me. The light flavors were wasted on an uncured heavy bowl. Second time around was my small cobb. What a difference! The wonderful sweet notes mingled with the natural cobb and soon the whiskey barrel accents. Definitely better in a cobb in my opinion!
Customer Testimonials
Do not give up on this blend if you are not impressed on your first try or two. It is a singular and fantastic blend that grows on you like weeds in a rainy spring. Savory, gentle, complex, and burns great is what I like. FMC is an absolute must try and I highly recommend it.
Frog Morton's Cellar: This is the blend with a stave, a small oak cube from a whiskey barrel that imparts a hint of rum or whiskey to the blend. The smoky Latakia is present but not overpowering, and I found the room note delightful. It's slightly sweet in taste and aroma, but not in an aromatic sense. It lights easily and burns to the bottom of the bowl without bite. It has become my favorite of the Frog Morton blends and I recommend it.
To understand where I'm coming from as a new-ish piper you would have to read my on the bayou review. This is my second of my Frog sampler and you could knock me over with a feather as I am smoking Cellar from my Morgan nose warmer for the first time right now. Unfreakinbelievable!!Aro and new smokers you want to at least try this. P&C are my heros and good smoking my friends!
I agree with the people that say this is a tobacco where English and aromatic fans can compromise. I would recommend this blend to anyone. It's very sweet, and the whiskey flavor is very obvious but not overpowering. I think this could be an all day smoke for a lot of folks, but it's a bit too sweet for me, but I could definitely see myself smoking this after dinner every day, I'll always have a tin on hand. Excellent tobacco! 4/4 stars
Very complex flavors. Reminds me of a good Scotch.
Great tobacco! After puffing on it a little I can taste the hints of whiskey from the wooden cube in there. Definitely will be keeping this in stock.
Nice smoke much different than my normal tabacco but quite pleasent.
Very nice smoke. A good variety of flavors. Smoked a little hot towards the bottom of the bowl, but that was probably my fault. One of my favorite tobaccos so far.
I am stil fairly new to pipe smoking, started last Nov. Tried a number of tobaccos from Pipe and Cigars and other tobacco shops. Tried Mississippi River and Blue Mountain ect. I find Frog Morton Cellar the best of all so far. No tobacco has yet to top it yet. It's still # 1 to me.
This blend is pure heaven. As a mostly aromatic tobacco user, this is a great way to enter the world of English. I am like bourbon so the fact that there is a piece of a bourbon barrel appealed to me. The was a delicious smoke, cool, with the hint of the bourbon flavor......but very minimal, Just enough to make it hit the spot. It smokes cool. Very enjoyable.
This was a great smoke. Flavorful yet not to much. I haven't been pipe smoking for very long, but I have sampled about 2 dozen different tobaccos and this is my favorite to date. I would suggest this for anyone who hasn't been smoking long. Have a great day.
AWESOME!!! WOW! Just great, love it and can't get enough of it!
Just cracked open my tin of FMC and after just one bowl knew this was going to be one of my favorites. Smooth, smokey and the whiskey flavoring in the background is pure heaven. Great tobacco from McClelland!
Adding an update to my previous review. Even after just a couple months in my cellar, FMC has rounded out nicely (it's perfectly blanced for my taste). The latakia is a little more subdued, the ketchup/worcestershire smell and taste are pretty much gone, the whiskey is more pronounced and so is the sweetness of the Virginias. I had a hunch this would age well, but tasting like this, I'm not sure it's going to last long enough for me to see what it's like in a year! Better order some more...
Out of the 20 plus choices in my cellar. . .FMC is in my regular rotation. Recognizing the diversity in our pallets, as a suggestion for some of those new to this pastime. . .give FMC another try in a corn cob pipe. You might have a positive experience.
One of my absolute favorite blends. I usually prefer full-bodied English blends, but this stuff is fantastic. The whiskey flavor adds a bit of sweetness to the blend which in my opinion, makes this the perfect cross-over from aromatic to English and Virginia blends.
Without a doubt, this is my Go-To tobacco!
Frog Morton's Cellar pipe tobacco is an excellent English blend. This was the first english blend I ever tried and I was definitely pleased. The only problem I had was that the tobacco was too moist but that's not a big deal because you can just leave it open and let it dry a little. Other than that, the flavor was delicious and tasted sweet. The aroma is nice and Im always opening the tin to smell it. And the staves are a neat touch and are fun to collect. I highly recommend trying this tobacco. You will not be disappointed
Do I like Frog Morton's Cellar? Well...first, a little story. I asked the lovely people at P&C what an aro-lover should try for his first venture in English blends, and they recommended a few that included FMC. The description, reviews, the Tokien reference, the whiskey barrel stave all screamed that this was the one to try. Unfortunately, when I ordered some, P&C accidentally sent me original Frog Morton, but they quickly rushed FMC out the door as soon as I alerted them, which is yet another testament to their fantastic customer service. But I be honest, I didn't enjoy my first bowl at all. I expected woodsy smokiness, but there was this weird umami thing going on that confused the heck out of my palette. It was almost like Worcestershire, maple syrup and ketchup coming to an aromatics party and arguing about who's more popular. However, on my second bowl a few days later, I began to appreciate FMC. Now, on my third bowl as I type this, I can honestly say that I understand and actually enjoy FMC and can pick out the layers of smooth complexity. That's really what this tobacco is all about: subtle complexity that begs for a prolonged, contemplative smoke. I'm sure with a little more time, this is going to be one of my all-time favorites and is going to be my gateway into heartier English blends.
What a great blend. Just sweet enough to be an aromatic yet smokey and spicy enough for some to call it an English. I love it. Easily in my top 3 favorite right now.
I cannot say enough good things about Frog Morton's Cellar. It was really my first big foray into English-y blends and made me a Latakia convert. I've read lots of folks say the whiskey stave is just a gimmick, but I can attest that if you sip this stuff slow enough, you'll get the nice whiskey undertones imparted by the stave. This stuff truly is a delight and is extremely easy to enjoy without having to concentrate on it.
As someone who has been wanting to crossover from Aro's to English tobaccos, FMC is quite simply my favorite tobacco to smoke right now. I give it a 10! It is that good. Both the aro lover and the English lover can enjoy this one together and not argue over which one is better.
I love the other FM blends and wanted to like this too. The whiskey smell, unfortunately, really put me off. I'm not sure why, but it just didn't agree with me at all.
Pure Amazingness, my favorite tobacco by far.
For others making the transition from aromatics - this is where its at. I find myself opening the can to smell it sometimes b/c its just a captivating aroma. I like whiskey. I used to really like smoking cigarettes, and missed it long after I quit. Took up pipe smoking recently on a whim. Started with aromatics and most of it was disappointing. It would smell good and burn completely differently. BSA vanilla and a locally made Creme Brulee, but other than that, it was really unsatisfying. Was thinking maybe my fancy Peterson was a waste, but I tried this, and kapow - now that's good stuff. It's hard to explain, but it is satisfying in a way aromatics have not been to date. Now I'm excited to try more English type blends - maybe starting with some of the other Morton's. The Bayou sounds interesting. So if you have kicked the filthy lousy habit of regular cigarette smoking, but truly enjoyed the leaf and miss the practice of smoking, I'd say this stuff has a better chance of making you happy than any of the aromatics. YMMV of course.
This stuff is so good I want to eat it.
This is the first Latakia blend I tried. Very nice, mild, smoky, whiskey flavor. I just bought another 2 tins. This is a keeper.
This should be in every pipe smokers rotation. The balance of flavor is a thing to behold. I've been a regular pipe smoker for the last few years. I had some trouble finding my sweet spot of what I liked in the beginning. Frog Morton's was introduced to me just as I was about to give up the hobby and stick with cigars exclusively. I'm so glad that I tried this blend and new just how amazing pipe tobacco could be.
Opening the tin notice a 1" x 1" chunk of charred wood in the tin. Very strong smoke, did not notice any whiskey flavor and burned fairly harsh ,hot, smoky. Not what I was expecting after reading other reviews. Will not get again.
It seems to smoke pretty hot in my bulldog, it smells and taste ok, not impressed, I am waiting on some other FM blends to try out. I did notice it got better as I let it age for a few days after opening.
I ordered a tin of this stuff not so long ago, and am I glad I did! The tin note is a mellow sweet whiskey smell with the smokiness of the Latakia in the mix making it a well rounded delicious smelling English. And honestly tastes a lot like how it smells. This blend has been my everyday smoke for a couple of months now and I plan on keeping it around for quite some time... Excellent!
I'm not experienced enough to give you an accurate description of the flavors I'm pulling through this. What I can say is this is my favorite tobacco to date. And I've tried quite a few. It is definitely smooth, and such a fantastic smoke, especially for the price. And whatever it's purpose is, I love the wooden cube that comes with it. I'll be collecting them. Try it out, you shan't regret!
Mild Latakia that's non offensive for an aromatic smoker, Virginia sweetness complimented by the whiskey blend thats equally non offensive for the non aromatic smoker. Overall a superb blend that combines the two different approaches of pipe tobacco into one providing the perfect amount of each. Trully a top grade blend!
Tastes great, I'll be buying lots of this
I love this stuff! Of all tobaccos that I have tried in the past 10 years, this is the best!
Great blend, a little on the sweet side for an all day smoke. Love the flavors very dynamic, as u smoke through the bowl u get everything from whiskey to stone fruits to leather. Again not an all day smoke but amazing in its own right. The stave cubes r a little gimicky ( i dont think they really add any flavor or control moisure) but tobacco is fantastic. 4/5 stars
Packing for a three week stay at our second home. Grabbed three tobaccos: Frog Morton cellar, Nording's Hunter Fox Hound, Scott's Butternut Burley. Plus, I have a supply of McC.'s Dark English 5110 already up there. Surprised me too. Guess these are my favorites. (At least for the next few weeks).
Delicious! I am not someone who can give a detailed breakdown of flavor and nuances. So I'll simply say that this is a very tasty blend that I will buy again.
The excitement starts when you open the tin. A beautiful but not heavy whiskey aroma hits you, and there's a chunk of stave in there to boot. The whiskey flavor in the smoke is subtle. The latakia doesn't over power. A real treat and it's now a staple of mine.
This was the first time I tried Frog Morton Cellar tobacco and I would have to say that it was an excellent smoke. I like the whiskey flavor smell to the nose also burns very well and cool. Will buy more!!
This was my first time trying a Frog Morton blend. I didn't care much for it. It smells like burnt wood and tastes the same way. Oh well. I think I am more into aromatics.
As a recent return to Pipe Smoking I have tried Captain's Black, Various Russ Monthly Blends, Comoy's Cask No2 and No5 and this is by far my favorite. Alot of the aromatics are too light or too sweet for me and many of the pure English blends I find too harsh or too much like firewood. I keep trying others but I like this medium blend with bourbon notes. Rich satisfying pipe tobacco.
One of my favorite English blends. Particularly enjoy the whiskey flavor the stave adds to the blend.
