Using Pipe Tobaccos for Roll Your OwnOn Feb. 4, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), to add $35 billion in funding to the program, which provides insurance for children in families making less than $80,000 a year. The additional funding comes from increasing taxes on tobacco products, with the roll-your-own and make-your-own (RYO/MYO) tobacco categories hardest hit, seeing the tax on these products go from $1.0969 per pound to$24.62 per pound, a whopping 2,400 percent increase! The tax goes into effect on April 1, 2009.
What can you do to continue to enjoy tobacco at a relatively inexpensive cost? Until the United States Treasury’s Alcohol, Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau likely changes the definition of pipe tobacco to make it taxable like RYO/MYO, you can make your own cigarettes using pipe tobacco, which at the moment will only be taxed at $2.8311 per pound.
Now most shops won’t tell you that you can use pipe tobacco or smooth tobacco as replacements for your favorite RYO blends because they want to avoid paying higher taxes for selling RYO. The way the tax code is written at the moment, RYO tobaccos are defined by their cut and their intended use. Likewise, pipe tobaccos are defined by their cut and their intended use. While the component tobaccos may be the same, they federal government considers them different due to their intended uses, for now. And that’s the way retailers want it, so if you ask a store clerk what pipe tobaccos best match your favorite RYO blend, don’t be surprised if you don’t receive an answer!
Most people think of the overly moist, cloying aromatic blends when they think about pipe tobacco—obviously, these blends are no good for making cigarettes. However, there is a tobacco category called “smooth tobacco.” Smooth tobaccos may be used as pipe tobacco blends or in hand-rolled cigarettes. Many of these blends have very little or no flavoring and feature the natural taste of Perique, burley, Virginias and Oriental tobaccos.
Typically, smooth tobaccos and pipe tobaccos feature a slightly coarser cut and higher moisture levels. Ribbon cut blends and flakes would be the best types of pipe tobacco blends to use, while smooth tobacco are exclusively ribbon cut.
Some RYO/MYO enthusiasts have experimented with allowing the tobacco to dry for a day or two and then using a coffee grinder to grind to a desired consistency. They also say that carefully spreading the tobacco out in the injector chamber should alleviate any gaps in a tube.
One benefit of using pipe tobacco is that because it has higher moisture content, more of it can be purchased and stored at the same time. Dry tobacco smokes harsh and the flavor that the blender intended is lost. Some RYO/MYO enthusiasts are reporting smoother and cooler smoking experiences using pipe tobacco.
So, with the RYO/MYO tax rate’s astronomical rise, explore the world of smooth tobacco and pipe tobacco and continue to enjoy a premium tobacco taste at a discount tobacco price.
