Been smoking pipes since college. I’m 64 now. The turmoil and upset plaguing our country has me leaning on my pipe more than ever. After all my years I’ve learned to really appreciate a good drink and my pipe in these current times. When evening comes I sit back with my simple transistor radio, listen to the latest news, and to take the edge off, I’ll light up a bowl of Carter Hall. It smokes easy, has a wonderful nutty flavor, no bite and goes well with a good scotch. The chaos in the world melts away. Carter Hall is a simple burley and Virginia blend that mildly satisfies and provides a very pleasant room note that harks back to simpler times. My dad used to smoke it. Everyone who’s around seems to gravitate to a seat near me. It’s not a fancy, expensive, potpourri tobacco. It’s for those who love a mild burley blend, that enjoy several bowls at a time. I highly recommend it. The best evenings are simply spent with my pipe and a bowl of Carter Hall.

Very mild and mellow smoke when used in conjunction with Dr. Grabow filters. No bite and good aroma and taste. I would recommend it as a non-overpowering all day smoke.

I have tried many pipe tobaccos and I have to say Carter Hall is my favorite. It isn't too wet or too dry. It stays lit. It has a rich flavor but won't give you a tongue bite. The best words to describe it would be if tobacco were to go to social functions, this one would go to a classical concert. It is distinguished. The smoothness, the richness and even the look of it is superior in my opinion. If you want a classy smoke without the worry, this is the one for you.

Great smoke. Mild and flavorful.

Carter Hall has a long heritage as a fine tobacco and rightfully so. It lights well and burns evenly all the way down to a fine ash with minimal relights. It is good for forming a nice cake on a new pipe too! It is a mild smoke with a nutty flavor from Burley tobacco and I have never experienced tongue bit. Can easily be a go-to all day smoke.

Pleasing flavor that has a subtle, unintrusive room note.

I don't really write reviews but, here is my first. I am considered an old codger. I have tried many blends through the years including many aromatics and English. My OTC blend mostly has been Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic. Just a couple weeks ago I decided to try Carter Hall. The first smoke was not all that impressive. I continued because I don't feel with most brands one bowl is a fair trial. After several bowls CA is now becoming a blend I really enjoy. Nice smooth "tobacco flavor" that is a consistent smoke. I would suggest to give it a try. I am starting to like it and its in my regular rotation.

A fine tobacco at a good price.

I have heard so many people say that Carter Hall was a cool smoking, easy tobacco that I had to try it. Man were they right! You really cannot get tongue bite even if you try. It’s so forgiving and still tastes and smells great! Definitely not a flavor house but that is why it’s so forgiving. Pack your pipe anyway you want and it stays lit.
Great all day smoke, perfect for the car!

This is my second time ordering the Carter Hall in a 14 oz package and I am extremely pleased. It smokes well, has a pleasant aroma and has little or no bite. I will buy it again!!

Carter Hall is an easy and cool smoking tobacco that is nearly impossible not to love. It's a clean-tasting and uncomplicated smoke. One of my favorite ways to wake up is a bowl of Carter Hall in a cob and a cup of good coffee. I would highly recommend this blend to a person who is overwhelmed by the vast and seemingly infinite amount of artisan blends out there.

Very nice mild tobacco that you can smoke all day long without feeling overwhelmed.

An old reliable friend is Carter Hall a rich smooth taste, pleasant aroma, and general mellowness wins out every time. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned pro this is one brand that offers consistency and reliability in every pouch.

This was the first pipe tobacco I tried from the advice from a pioneer in the pipe smoking community, the great Matches 860. I thought it was just ok. But after trying a bunch of different expensive blends, from English to aromatics , I decided to pick up another pouch of Carter Hall and I just fell in love with it. Something clicked in my palate that I really like the natural tobacco taste along with a very light topping. I now only buy tubs of Carter Hall, I smoke the pouches too fast!! LOL. This is a great blend if you want a no nonsense tasty and great smelling smoke. For me it’s Prince Albert in the morning then Carter Hall all day!

The tobacco is for my husband so I cannot speak for it but I can speak for the site "Pipes and Cigars". I order the tobacco about twice a year -- I get 6 cans at a time. I have done this for several years. I see all the 'specials' that P & C run but never anything that would be something that I would order. I find it curious that there is never a 'discount' for volume orders or repeated orders. I feel like I am taken for granted !! Just saying !!

My favorite smoke. I have tried so many tobaccos...and liked many of them. English to aromatics and even those in between blends. However, I still smoke CH every day and could not live without it. I guess I just like what I like.

Carter Hall has been around for a long time as many of you know. It's a good blend, but for me it is a blend that needs to be mixed with a nice aromatic.

The tobacco was very dry...burned hot and fast with little flavor. This was straight out of the freshly opened pouch. I rehydrated it with a terra cotta leaf...24 hours later. It was moist...I facilitated this by putting the tobacco and leaf in a sealed tin. After letting it sit for a couple of days, it was evenly rehydrated. Letting it dry for maybe an hour helped again and it was tolerably smokable. After several bowls from a large Savinelli balsa filter pipe, I concluded that it’s a very mild smoke with subtle flavor and aroma. All in all, not bad but a pain to get it to a smokable condition. It has some sweetness...just a little and doesn’t bite although it is a bit tangy. Good for a quick smoke. The Savinelli is normally good for an hour or more with most high end ribbon cuts, the Carter Hall, maybe 45 minutes, possibly less. I’d give it good marks for a novice pipe smokers start up tobacco. Could also be used to reduce the strength of stronger smokes by adding bulk with not too much character. Didn’t fall in love with it but it’s OK.

This is an average smoking tobacco in my estimation. My steady go-to tobacco is Captain Black (original). I've tried so many other brands, both OTC and hoity toity brands, but I always come back to Captain Black and will stick with him.

I've been a career hall fan for many years. I do hope you have the 14oz tins available soon.

The prevailing flavor of alcohol was much less pleasant than the hints of cocoa I experienced in the last half the of the bowl. The tobacco is mostly smothered by the flavorings, with hints of nutty sweetness from the burleys peeking through. The virginias peek through too, but they are always in the background. Were the casings more balanced and consistent in flavor, I would have liked this blend more. I probably won't be picking it up again, but I don't regret the purchase and ended up finishing the pouch.
5 out of 5
One of the best, yet most unpretentious blends out there. Good grief this stuff is good! I love Dunhill blends, C&D blends, and many others...but I'm almost embarrassed to say it, but Carter Hall is my absolute favorite. The moisture and texture from the pouch or tub is nearly almost perfect. The pouch/tub notes to me is of earthy plumb. It is quite unassuming and on first light, the blend has very little flavor. Yet hold on for a few moments and get midway through the bowl and you'll experience pipe smoking nirvana.

I bought a pouch of Carter Hall out of curiosity while ordering some tinned tobacco from Pipes and Cigars. The pouch note was not encouraging; the tobacco has a little of the chemically smell of Half & Half. When I smoked it, however, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a solid tobacco. The flavor is not complex, but not one-dimensional either; it's very tasty. It packs well. It stays lit without effort. It doesn't bite. I smoked my first bowl in a cob, and then four bowls back-to-back in a meerschaum. I only stopped because the meer was starting to gurgle slightly. This is a blend that can be smoked all day long. It burns quickly, so if you smoke during breaks at work or other similar opportunities, this tobacco is ideal. And if you also tend to chug away at your pipe like a freight-train, then this is stuff is perfect. The only downside to this blend in my opinion is that it obviously contains additives. I like it a little too much, and I'm sure I'll burn through the pouch in another day or two. In this respect, it is a little too much of a cigarette-like experience for my liking.

Amateur pipe smoker, pleasantly surprised by this tobacco. Very mild, only had to light once, little to no bite, smokes well. A good, solid, no-frills choice.

Recently started to try some different types and quality of tobacco blends to get a good feel of what I like.
This was one of the "Ol' Timer's" tobacco I recently purchased. I was surprised how mellow this was but still enjoyable. Sometimes I think keeping a blend simple and doing it right goes a long way. The pouch note contained bittersweet chocolate and white sugar. The taste was well balanced all the way through with a slight nutty almost hazelnut with some light hints of the cocoa I smelled. Strength is mild but was ok with me. Tried and true blend that can be smoked again and again

Wasn't to sure I was going to like this tobacco but after smoking it I find it to be really enjoyable

Great old time baccy! Light it, tamp it, light again and then puff it slow. Best way to enjoy the mild virginia, and nutty flavor in the burley and never have to light again or feel any tongue bite. Very subtle flavors best enjoyed in a slow, gentle draw. Truly a no frills, enjoyable blend.

My favorite "OTC" blend. So many good things are said about this tobacco and they are true. This is my all day smoke. Try some you may be surprised...
4 out of 5
This isn't my normal smoke and my story mirrors others. My Dad used to smoke Carter so I got a pouch to try in his memory. I too, ended up gravitating to the morning pipe with coffee. It is satisfying, the best of the regular retail tobaccos I've tried. A bit nutty, soft & toasted with loads of smoke. Easy to pack, light and burns fine if fast. It has a certain comfort level and starts the day off just right. My usual stuff is too strong for the early a.m. so every morning I look forward to having the first pipe of the day "with" Dad.

You can never go wrong with a pouch of CH. Always consistent .

True what's said as a mixer. I bought Lane 1 Q but I needed more flavor. So, I did a 60% 1 Q, 20 % Carter Hall and 20 % BC. Let the mix sit for 2 weeks and I got a really great smooth smoke. Carter Hall saved the day and 1 lb. of 1Q.
5 out of 5
CH is great by itself or as a blending base. I always keep some in reserve as CH has this amazing ability (for me at least) to reset my palate. So I am sure to smoke a few bowls a week just to enhance and reset my palate. I don't know why or how it does this, but it's really amazing. The flavors are so subtle that when they do poke their head out you'll know your palate is reset. That's my gauge at least

Nothing to not like about Carter Hall, a long time classic.

A solid basis for comparison. Just returned to pipe smoking after many years. In the last couple of months have tried 6 or 7 aromatic and English blends. Read reviews and thought I should try this. Nice nutty cocoa like burley taste. Smoothe. What you want a pipe tobacco to taste like without bite. Inexpensive, basic good smoke. Just starting a rotation and this will be in it. Thanks to previous reviewers for guiding me to this!

I also blend it with Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture to get that perique thing goin'.
And, the best thing is, I can smoke each blended together, or, I can smoke each straight! Talk about having options!
Love it! Just sayin'!

Carter Hall is corner stone in the pipe tobacco market. The simplicity or should I say lack of complexity of this tobacco make it a main stay in the market. Just set back and enjoy.

Fantastic. For a readily available tobacco.. you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one for the price. It never disappoints. A wonder naturally sweet Burley taste without any chemical aftertaste. Terrific aroma, no bite. Fab.

Carter Hall is my favorite tobacco for every day smoking. Smooth with no "bite" to it.
4 out of 5
First bowl of CH and I'm pleasently surprised. Easy to light, good taste all the way through, and I could swear that sometimes I get a hint of cherry on the nose. I tried Prince Albert and the taste and room smell seems better with this. Will definitely try a few pouches of this as it looks promising.
5 out of 5
Carter Hall is basic. Hint of a very slight topping but basically just a good burley/virginia. No bite, cool smoking, and burns down to a fine white ash. Easy all day smoke!
5 out of 5
Been smoking a pipe for almost 40 years now. CH was always one of those drugstore brands, along with a myriad of others long since forgotten, that was always an available staple. I've tried custom blends, ordered a ton of tobacco on line, but always go back to CH for it's consistency. It's always seemed nutty to me, and I love the burley taste. I'm generally into the English blends for fun, but for an all-day smoke, nothing beats Carter Hall.
5 out of 5
My Dad used to smoke this so naturally I gave it a try when I was old enough to pick up the pipe. This is my all time favorite. I always keep a couple pouches around. It's consistent in taste and burns nicely. I personally prefer it in a cob but briars are good too. On top of that is the price. If you want to conserve on your pricier baccy, this is a great all day smoke so you can save those fancy tins for special occasions. I haven't tried the tub yet but will definitely give it a shot. I hope this stays around for a long time.

I can't believe how an otc brand like Carter Hall has hooked me. I still like English tobacco like White House and Sobranie and vapers, but Carter Hall is one I continuosly go to and I smoke it a lot. It is not unusual for me to smoke several bowls a day and I rarely get tired of it. It's a wonderful smoke.

When I left for the service in the 60's I gave my dad a Kaywoodie pipe. When I came home I would see the pipe was well used. When I moved away, every time I came home Dad was smoking that pipe. When he passed, it was one of the things that I brought home. Never smoke it as it was pretty worn. One winter day I decided to clean it up and give it a try, not really expecting to put it in rotation. As I started to load the pipe I thought, the only tobacco ever smoked in that pipe was Carter Hall. So the next day, I found a pouch and not expecting much I smoked my first bowl, and surprise I found that I liked it. In my next order I will get some more to keep on hand just for this pipe. Sure I have better tobaccos, but when I smoke this it takes me back to being with Dad. Rest in peace Dad.

I smoked a lot of Cherry Blend in my misspent youth. Carter hall is a lot like that but without the hint of cherry, kind of like cigarette tobacco in my opinion. Today there are many more choices beyond the drug store and even places like Smokers Choice for less than the price of carter hall. Right now I am trying various samples, 3 or 4 tobaccos usually at reduced prices, most better than Carter Hall, in my opinion.

This one takes you back to Grandpa, room note is sweet, slightly musty. If I didn't live with the wife, I would sprinkle a little of this on the burner of the electric stove when I woke up in the morning.
But I don't smoke for the room note. It starts out like it smells, but soon tastes like a damp hobo crawled in your mouth to take a nap, with a hint of cardboard sprinkled in brown sugar (not unpleasant, a good Sunday afternoon aromatic). Just lacks character in the taste department.
5 out of 5
Smoked Carter Hall in 1959 while my shipmate smoked Mix. 79. Still use it today. There are a couple brands that come close but CH is still the best.

Carter Hall is my staple smoke and I will be ordering more!!

One of the best OTC blends. Kept finding myself going out ever so often to buy a pouch. Finally decided that was a waste of time and bought the tub. When it's gone,I'll just get another. Good stuff, easy light, burn, aroma, flavor and taste. That's all folks.

There is a reason it has been around for decades. This has become my anytime go to tobacco.

This has been my favorite tobacco for years. Cool, nice flavor, not too expensive, easy to smoke, what's not to like? I try others for variety and to see what's out there, but I always come home to CH. I really like the taste, and because it smokes so cool I can enjoy it without working at it, just relax and smoke.

Gotta retract my previous review. I gave my pouch 2 weeks rest and it made a big difference. Nice tobacco taste with Virginia being the most prominent. No tongue bite this time and I'm on my 2nd continuous bowl. Will buy more. Maybe this is like cigars and h s s to be aged first.
1 out of 5
Despite many postings here and the description on the pouch, "no bite." I found significant tongue bite. Maybe I just got a bad pouch. If you want pure tobacco taste this may fill the bill as I found no hint of any topping. However, sO think this might be better used as a mix with other blends. However, it is not for,me.

Good Ol' American Burley. Man this stuff is smooth! No tongue bite and you can smoke it all day!

This is mellow, and ready. One that out Fathers and granddad's, enjoyed yesteryear, and we have the chance to revisit. Don't pass up the chance.

It seems Carter Hall gets a lot of praise as a good OTC pipe tobacco. In my opinion Carter Hall offers a soft, easy-going smoke with hints of nutty flavor in a sweet natural tobacco setting. It's not complex...it's just easy to like. You guys at Pipes & Cigars deliver great service on my orders too. Thanks!
3 out of 5
In my first review I told everyone to skip it. Still feel that way if you intend to smoke it straight. I did find that mixed with some other tobaccos I had on hand it made a good blending tobacco. Will be ordering more to make more of my own blend. This blend may very well become my everyday smoke.
2 out of 5
Save your money! Bought one pouch and smoked one bowl full. Burned hot and left a taste like tar on the tongue. For what it cost for the pouch or the tin you can by premium tobacco and get a better smoke. Will have to mix this with something to even make it tolerable!

This is my staple tobacco. It has the same aroma going in & out. Seems to have a hint of cocoa, with tinges of wine, vanilla, & molasses.

This is one of those OTC blends that has been around for years! I remember seeing the pouches and tins in the drug store and grocery store when I was a kid! A nice mild tobacco, no bite and burns to a nice white ash!

Carter Hall has long been regarded as one of the best OTC blends, and rightly so. It is mild, full of burley nuttiness, and topped with just a smidgen of Cocoa/Molasses; enough to accentuate the burley and the Virginia sweetness. Very balanced, and a great all day smoke for burley lovers. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because lately Hearth & Home has produced a match that ups the ante a bit: Chatham Manor. But it’s still hard to beat that satisfying, rounded, bready mellowness of Carter Hall. One of my favorites in the traditional American drug store blends. Get some!

This is my second order of Carter Hall.. I picked up my first in a local B&M. Good, cheap, classic, and simple. It has a strong enough flavor to taste it, unlike some other cheap brands, and you can smoke it all day if you like. I prefer it in my estate Dr. Grabow, just so I can feel old.

From the minute I tried this blend, I liked it. It is everything the discription states it is. A very delightful all day smoke. Light, nutty flavor & no tongue bite. (VLS)

This is the only tobacco I have smoked for years. I have not found anything that equals it.

This is the stuff, at least for me! I tried Captain Black regular (bulk) and it was fine, but this is smoother, has good room note, and is mild enough to smoke all the time (which is just what was looking for.) If you want a strong blend this is probably not for you, but if you are looking for something forgiving and easy to smoke look no further. My pouch was not at all moist (while the Captain needed to dry for bit), it lit easily, stayed lit with no real effort, and left only ash in the bowl after burning all the way down. While it is not the only tobacco that I plan to keep on hand, it's certainly one that I will always have around. Now I understand why my grandfather bought this by the tub!

Fresh, smooth taste. Mild aroma and room presence. I have smked Carter Hall for over 4 decades because it continues to satisfy.
