I love it! Nice, basic tobacco that’s fresh, cut well, and not overwhelmed with too many chemicals or flavorings. Fantastic and I mix with Penhooker for a serious, arsenic/formaldehyde-free smoke!

Flavorful and smooth. More stems than I anticipated.

Best rolling tobacco

My first experience with this blend and I am not disappointed.
Great all tobacco flavor and a pleasant aroma.
I found the cut to be a little thin so it does burn faster than expected. But it can be overlooked for the taste.
I'll be buying it again.

I've been rolling my own cigarettes for 5 years and finally came across this British shag cut smoking tobacco and it is a dream. I have to clean it up of twigs and such, and unpack it, but it's worth it. A really fine smoking experience of pure tobacco. Thanks Three Daughters...

Nice smooth, medium body taste with enough of a hit to know it’s in your pipe. Nice room note. Very finely shredded, nice pack, easy light, stayed lit throughout to a fine ash. I’ll be buying more.

I could not be happier with Three Sails Pipe Tobacco. I use it daily. It packs well, burns evenly and has the smoothness I enjoy.
5 out of 5
Mainly a cigar smoker for years, not a cigarette smoker. So, what do I think of 3 Sails? I like it, a lot. Why? It's a great mild morning smoke. I enjoy it in the morning. As for all of these reviewers complaining that it's not a pipe tobacco and that it's "just" a cigarette tobacco, well, it's a tobacco without the extra ingredients that make cigarettes nasty. I don't think this stuff is nasty at all. It's mild and nice and pleasant on the retro. Sometimes you don't want a heavy or aromatic pipe tobacco, and the shag cut is a really nice departure from all these thick ribbon cuts. At night I prfer things like MM American Patriot or C&D Haunted Bookshop, or maybe a nice flavored vanilla or cherry cavendish, but in the morning, when I can smoke, I love 3 Sails. Variety is the spice of life, so if this isn't your variety, then buy something else!

Very nice morning blend. Just the right mixes of tobaccos. Burn cool and has goo mouth feel. Would buy again.

This is a very good ryo tobacco. Very smooth and a consistent burn. The turkish blend can be compared to camel blue. This is my go to tobacco. I highly recommend it.

If you remember the old three castles cigarette tobacco, this is the very same thing in pipe tobacco form. The only thing that has changed is the cut. It doesn’t really do much in the bowl, but it does great when it is rolled up as a cigarette. The flavor is much more complex than your basic Virginia Burley. If you’re looking for a taste to blow the back of your head off, this is not it. But, if you want one of the finest smokes you can have while rolling your own, this is definitely up there in the top five.
5 out of 5
It’s as close to American spirit as I’ve been able to find. I smoked the turquoise a.s for years.
5 out of 5
Best so far of the ryo tobaccos. At first I did not care for it as it seemed to lacked flavor, but over time the flavor did come thru. It is subtle in taste but once you have accepted that, it is the best. Just pure tobacco here so other tobaccos with fire curing, fermenting, flavorings added, will seem more tasty at first.

I bought this for a RYO shag, but find I like it in a pipe better.. Not very flavorful, but gets the job done.. A straight forward Virginia

This stuff is top-quality Virginia shag. Due to the extremely fine cut, it works best as a cigarette tobacco. If you're buying it for that purpose, you won't be disappointed. It can be smoked in a pipe, but you must pack it very firmly. When smoked in a large bowl, it tends to bite, but it does work quite well as a short smoke in a small bowl. I find this tobacco convenient to carry around in my tobacco pouch when I am out and about, as I can either roll it into cigarettes or smoke it in a small briar as circumstances dictate. It's certainly worth buying, especially given the low price per ounce when purchased in bulk, but just keep in mind that you're buying what is, in all but tax bracket, a cigarette tobacco.

Three Sails is a close knockoff of Three Castles. Like it's originator, it has a level of inconsistency. Nevertheless, it's the best sweet Virginia tobacco I know of.
P&C offers this at prices that make me seem like a whiner considering the value proposition.
You pick your style and flavor, that's your choice. The best value is always at P&C

Love the extra fine shag cut. This tobacco is a lot cleaner than most. Fewer sticks, stems, etc. Worth the price.

I am a RYO smoker and have tried several different types of tobacco from various outlets along my local main street. They simply could not hold a candle to the variety and quality of the products offered by P & C. The vacuum seal is always in tact and the tobacco is always as fresh as it can be. While I have tried nearly all the Daughters Ryan products and was pleased with all of them but the cut of Three Sails puts it above the rest. It makes machine rolling a breeze. Most importantly P & C is the only way to go for great service, freshness and quality. Their customer service people are knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. They are the best!

This 100% Virginia tobacco is great for a smooth smoke. There is no harshness or throat irritation and the thin cut allows for packing any way you like. All in all a god deal.

Excellent medium blend. Very mild but without being weak. Very tasty, a little bit smokey. There are some stems, but they are very easy to pick out -- only maybe one stem every ounce or so, so no big deal. Tobacco comes in ziplock bag and is at perfect humidity when it arrives and continues to remain very well humidified due to the ziplock bag.

Found my new brand. Light and smooth

My go-to smoke both in my cigarettes and pipes. The fine flavor has the best hints of flue-cured English, Dutch, and Canadian with an emphasis on Canadian tobacco, and the super-fine shag cut is a joy to work with. A truly great Virginia smoke!

Arrived promptly & much fresher than any shag I find at the stores here. I mixed in some sample size aromatics from P&C for pipe, then dried & chopped chopped up a separate batch with cloves. Never tried it on its own in a pipe. Will purchase again.

Very smooth, shag cut tobacco. It’s all that I smoke.

I've been smoking pipes since 1966, and I don't remember a tobacco purchase that gave me such consistent pleasure. Since 1970, I've smoke a pipe with a pyrolytic graphite bowl liner, which stands high heat and doesn't absorb moisture. This the first tobacco I've smoked since boring my homemade wooden stem from 17 caliber to 22 caliber. A bigger bore cools smoke better, which means the bowl can be hotter, to prevent condensation and the pollution it causes, and to distill more of the flavor before combustion destroys it.

Of the tobaccos I have tried recently, this is the one I cannot say I am really all that enamored with.
It seems a little dry and burns rather quickly, which is okay if you just need a quickie, but if you want to kick back and enjoy a nice, long smoke, this one doesn't quite cut it for me.
It has a decent flavor but is a little on the mild side for me, but it is in no way objectionable.
Works better if blended with other slightly stronger tobaccos - and it burns longer, too.

I recommend smoking all daughters tobacco in a corn cob pipe. It makes a great big different taste.

i enjoy smoking three sails , it is smooth and has a nice taste, i mix it with most all of my other tobacco’s….it blends really well with anything….five stars.

This all VA blend is naturally sweet and doesn't tend to give you the typical tongue burn of some VA's. It can be enjoyed alone or mixed with another blend to add that nice VA flavor. Versatile.
5 out of 5
I buy this and roll it up for my snobbish "American Spirit only" friends and they can't tell the difference.
5 out of 5
Probably the smoothest blend. Not harsh at all.
5 out of 5
It's the best thing of its sort available. Period.
4 out of 5
The tobacco arrived on the dry side, which I admit is not unusual for large bags. A couple of pieces of tissue soaked in some alcohol and paced in the bag and resealed does a good job in giving the tobacco that slight touch of `not dry anymore`and yet not moist enough to stop a perfect smoke. The smoke has a good texture without the bite. Excellent value. A small soaked tissue in dark rum is my favorite

I understand people using Three Sails as a roll-your-own tobacco, but as the name suggests It's also a most delightful and unique pipe smoking mixture. She's a light, yet bright smoke that leaves you wanting to burn another bowl. Puff her too fast and she'll bite a bit. But if you sip on her softly, like a fine wine, she'll show you what she's made of. My only qualm is that she burns out too quickly, no matter how hard I pack her. So beware, but enjoy.

Not used to such a fine cut with packing and burn speed. I mixed it half an half with Ohm yellow and got a smoother burn and nice taste.

I have been a devotee to Three Sails for over 10 years. Sadly, That was the run...
This blend is no longer consistent, but the character changes dramatically from batch to batch. The latest bags I have used were obviously "chocolate" "flavored" and the ones before that were sprayed with the same "flavoring" that is used on Bugler tobacco... after it was really considered "good".
IS Mark Ryan really still in charge of these things? I sincerely hope not, as that would severely tarnish my opinion of D&R and Mark Ryan.

its shag cut which i like, i think the moisture content could be improved maybe its the packaging. this variety is very commonly out of stock which is annoying, cause i try purchase this regularly. this is my go to for afordable tobacco

Some of the finest RYO tobacco you can buy. The tobacco is cut very small and perfect for a injector. The tobacco is fluffy and seems to stick together when you get it out of the bag, so you might have to play with the tobacco a bit to make a perfect roll. Other pipe tobacco I've tried taste like pipes and seem to have a ton of burley in them. This taste like a normal cigarette, and most importantly smokes like one. If your hesitating getting this because of the price, I would atleast try it out and you most likely will not be sorry. The bag came in at an 8% moisture level from the mail, so I hydrated it a bit to about 13%, and it is a great experience in a roller.

I really love this stuff for RYO. It's a bit too bright and bland for me though by itself, after awhile.
I prefer to mix it with about 1/3 Ryback Gold. I assume the "Gold" part of Ryback Gold is 3 Sails, based on the descriptions.
Ordered Ryback Regular by accident last month to complement the 3 Sails, and WOW is that stuff potent.
Just needed a small pinch of it for each tube.
A little Ryback goes a long way. But adds a dark deliciousness to my 3 Sails that I can't do without.
I'd highly recommend giving the mix a try if 3 Sails alone isn't cutting it for you.
Ryback Gold is too much for me by itself, but really sets this tobacco off.
And this tobacco is Amazingly perfect for RYO. Which seems to make a lot of pipe smokers mad (?) :(

Everything you want in RYO tobacco.

You guys that claim this is not pipe tobacco need to be educated on what shag cut is. It was a finely cut almost matted tobacco that sailors would wad into a bowl because the tangled mess would not blow out of their pipes. Yes, it also makes a fine cigarette but shag cut was invented WAY before cigarettes. And by the way, plenty of tobaccos absolutely revered in the pipe community also make great cigarettes. So, get off your high horses and experience a fine 100% flue-cured Gold Leaf tobacco. Redydration helps the blend as does a reasonably tight pack in the bowl.
4 out of 5
This is a great tobacco for RYO. Bright, yet mellow. Fresh, but just a little thick to its smokiness.
4 out of 5
First go at the legendary MYO. The cut is what sets it apart. It is a very fine shag and it stuffs beautifully and can make a tight cigarette easily. Flavor is nice and there's nothing offensive about it but not mind-blowing. Very smooth and medium-rich but to me lacks a little edge. High quality. Has some kind of casing that is vaguely alcohol-like, and I wonder how the raw tobacco would taste without it. Richer than a, say, AS standard cigarette but missing some of that brand's sharpness. Good all-day smoke. Will buy again and want to try others.

I'm an ex-cigarette smoke. D&R was the greatest gift to those of us who stuffed our own tubes. This is cigarette tobacco and always will be. They don't even try to cut it for pipes, its the same stuff I used to buy love and inhale. If you like a cigarette, this is good stuff. I cant imagine its any good as a pipe tobacco.
5 out of 5
This is a mellow sweet tobacco that works excellent as RYO or in a pipe. I will be buying this again.
5 out of 5
For those that say it is not pipe tobacco give it another try. I found it to be a bite free, few relight, sweet tasting moderate nicotine delight. It's also nice to pack at the top of a flake to help hide my poor flake technique.
1 out of 5
C'mon guys, this is not a pipe tobacco. I should have read the reviews closer. Not too terribly bad but definitely a RYO.
4 out of 5
Nice and light. Exactly as described. Actually smoking right now.

Happy with purchase
3 out of 5
Bought 8 ounces bulk of this and recently finished it off. It's not bad to be clear, but it's definitely not great. I found it to be smooth with a slight sweet undertone. This Virginia was smooth to the point of feeling as though I was drawing no smoke. No bite whatsoever. If that's your preference then you're looking at the right tobacco. The flavor I found was almost non-existent, taking it after or with coffee or tea allowed me clear my taste buds enough to taste the sweet undertones, they are there just very subtle. This tobacco does come very dry while rehydrating is simple enough, smoking this beforehand it will burn very fast. This may be attributed to the cut. This does make a great blend when mixed with Burley which makes Three Sails shine and will bring out the best in Burley blends. All in all not a great tobacco, but not necessarily bad.
3 out of 5
A sweet-ish, overall somewhat underwhelming but not bad smoke. Best rolled into a cigarette. Tried smoking out of a filterless pipe and ended up sucking hot ashes. If rolling your own cigarettes, this is a good tobacco for it.
5 out of 5
Great for RYO. Good flavor. Grassy strong.
2 out of 5
very dry and fat burning
4 out of 5
For a cheap tobacco, it's not bad. When I'm in a pinch this is the go to. Not really anything to right home about, but all in all it gets the job done when all else is out. Would I buy again, probably; would I be thrilled about having to do so, not really.
1 out of 5
My 1st disappointing pipe tobacco. I bought it based off the number of reviews but did not enjoy it, myself.
4 out of 5
The flavor profile is what you would expect after reading the description. I found it rather plain, but that's not a bad thing. It's a good middle-of-the-day smoke or a palate cleanser
2 out of 5
Hey! I think I just smoked a bale of Hay! or Straw, or dried lawn grass. This is definitely a roll your own cigarette tobacco. In the pipe it is not so great. Very mild, no backbone, no flavor other than grass. Citrus? That's a reach. Stuck with an "in case of emergency" bag of tobacco. Or I will give it to someone who smokes roll your own cigs.
3 out of 5
I like the aroma and flavor when smoking 3S; however, the cut is too small for a pipe, doesn't pack and is really more for RYO cigs. I get that, but if 3S wants to get more of a wallet share with pipesters they need to make the cut more hefty like ribbon or shag. It's a mellow smoke, doesn't bite, has a low nic hit, and is generally an okay smoke for all day... if you don't mind dealing chaff now and again. I won't buy it again unless D&R change the cut.

Very cool smoking

For the price, it's hard to beat. Good, sweet Virginia, that's at home in a pipe or a paper. Nothing fancy, just an easy packing, EASY to keep lit smoke.

Since I use this for rolling cigarettes, I was very disappointed in the smell, the thin, feathery cut and dryness of this tobacco. I've been using PS Virginia and Turkish and have now kicked myself in the keester for trying a cheaper brand. Not a fan...

After weeks of taste testing everyone's favorite tobaccos I found Daughters & Ryan Three Sails to be my favorite all day smoke. I reasoned that the tobaccos on P&C's Top Seller's pages just had to have my favorite too. It took me a couple of months to finally try Three Sails but the more I thought about what tobacco I wanted to smoke out of a big tobacco order, I kept returning to and liking the Three Sails best.
