Savinelli Doblone d'Oro is a unique blend of sugary Virginias, smooth Burleys, robust dark-fired leaf and a splash of zesty Perique. The mixture is then spun to mature and marry the flavors and sliced into compact coins which allow for a wide variety of packing options. Many fans of Doblone d'Oro find this to be very similar to the original Three Nuns when it was made with Perique.
Best ever, in nearly fifty years of pipe smoking. Wish it were not so pricey; but then again, it's nice to have something for those special occasions!

I have been a pipe smoker since 1970, and this is the best yet! I wish it were not so pricey, but at least I have something for those very special occasions.

Surprisingly Wonderful
Jun 09, 2016
I had read several bad reviews of this tobacco, and would not have purchased it, but I received it as a freebie after purchasing a Savinelli pipe. Am I ever glad I did!
This was a fantastic blend: I've been underwhelmed by Va/Per blends in the past, and just found them a bit bland. This was extremely flavorful. We have a strong raisin/fig smell, with sweet grassy Virginia leaf, and the Kentucky and Burley also add some strength and earthiness that is absent in the traditional Va/Per. This was an extremely flavorful smoke.
The only negative thing I could say is that it comes a bit dry. It was actually perfect straight out of the tin, but I might be a tad concerned if I were going to store it for a long time that it would dry out a little and then need rehydrating.
I hope this review balances out some of the other bad reviews on this page!

I thought it would be a good tobacco, but it is one of the worst one's I have ever smoked. The name evidently don't mean much.

Sadly Disappointed
Feb 15, 2016
Disappointing. They make fabulous pipes, but I was underwhelmed at the lack of flavor. Seemed a bit dry when I opened the tin, and I wasn't a big fan of having to rub out the coins. A far cry from Scottish Mixture.

Lots of hype, doesn't deliver

Not what I had expected from a Savinelli product . Love the pipes! Flavor seemed flat to me, especially when compared to Scottish Mixture. Plus, I'm not a fan of the cut coins that need to be rubbed out and it seemed a bit on the dry side.

Pleasant surprise from Savinelli

VaBur taste with a gently sweet wine-like character, and fruity notes riding atop a subtle smoky background. Very unique and intriguing taste! Downside: 1" coins are tightly packed and difficult to separate -- about half fall apart; but that's not a deal breaker for me.
