Very Good Burley indeed!
I’ve been piping for 50 years and I am now an ardent Burley smoker. I’ve tried SWR several times in the past and just never really got it - until today. Sutliff Ready Rubbed is far and away my favorite pure burley but one always needs a change up and I went to my 14 oz tub of SWR, filled a pipe and smoked. This time it hit me and I smoked two large bowls. This will now be a regular smoke for me. It is hardly aromatic. The topping is applied with a gentle hand but there is just enough sweetness to overcome burley bitter and enough cocoa to enhance the burley natural cocoa taste. The tin note smells of some kind of liquor that doesn’t come out in the smoking. It isn’t as nuanced as Ready Rubbed but it really is a great smoke. Packs easily, lights easily, isn’t wet, and isn’t a fast burner. I recommend this rather highly. Also has a beautiful room note.

Nothing to complain about with this one. Excellent burley flavor and not over-topped. Burns well and could be your friend all day long. Prefer over Prince Albert.

Another great offering From MM. This is a working mans tobacco at a great price. An all day smoke. I kept a jar of this on my saw horse building my daughter's swing set.

Surprise!
I purchased this pouch to "sample" a brand of tobacco which my father used to smoke. I assumed it was not aromatic. When I opened the pouch, I read, "An Aromatic Blend..." and I instantly thought, "Oh no!" Then I tried the first bowlful; then I tried the second bowlful; etc. Surprise! I like it. I will keep a can on hand for an every day, any time smoke.

Pleasant Surprise
Missouri Pride is exactly what I was searching for. This is a tobacco I can smoke all day, every day. Only disappointment is the unavailability of bulk. It would be nice to buy 16 ounces in bulk as opposed to 10 pouches.

Sir Walter Raleigh is one of the great American tobaccos. It was one of the very first tobaccos that I smoked back in my early days, and after 40 plus years I find myself enjoying it just as much. If your new to pipe smoking , get yourself a Missouri Meerschaum cob and some Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco , sit back and enjoy ! I find if smoked slowly you can better taste what the classic burleys have to offer !

Pretty decent smoke
The pouch I received was a fuzz on the dry side, but it packed pretty well and stayed lit for the most part. Flavor is a bit mild for me, but I would have no problem keeping some around for an occasional change of pace.

Memory of my Dad
My dad was a Sir Walter Raleigh fan for many years. He quit smoking it when he was 66. I always remembered the smell. My Dad passed away on June 28, 2019 at the age of 85 and I wanted it to put in his casket to take with him. My order came too late to do that and I found a package at a local store for him. I have you package in my drawer with a pipe to always remember my Dad.

My Favorite Codger Blend So Far!
SWR is a great all day blend for those who don’t want something too strong or too mellow. For me it falls somewhere in between the two. The room note is pleasing and is what I remember pipe tobacco smelling like when I would visit my pipe smoking grandfather while growing up. Great tasting, great aroma, and great memories. SWR always takes me back to happy days.

Sir Walter
My favorite standby smoke for 60+ years. There are very few tobaccos that I enjoy and Sir Walter is always one of them. Others come and go, often only tested and discarded but about half dozen will satisfy my taste. This one is always within reach.

I used to smoke this
I used to smoke this all the time in the 1970's, but since I've gone to Captain Black original, nothing seems to taste as good. I continue to try all kinds of blends, but haven't found anything that satisfies consistently like Captain Black original.

Missouri Pride
This stuff is excellent. Smokes cool and flavorful, with nutty burleys and sweet bright Virginias. There is a light topping that I believe is molasses, but it is merely a compliment in the background. There is very little if any PG in this, which is good. If it gets dry, put an apple slice in the bag for a few hours. This blend is probably what Half and Half tasted like back in the Thirties and Forties, when top-notch tobaccos were still used. Try it!

I purchase this product for a friend and he stated that he like it. Gave it a 5 stars. But he stated he do not give reviews on tobacco. It's similar to wine or beer. It's to the purchasers' taste in regards to the products. Basically, to one's taste.

It was really nice trying this out again, however.....
It had been a while - like twenty years - since I tried SWR, so I thought it might be fun to try it out again. I must say, I really enjoyed this tobacco - a nice, refined mixture with a gentle aroma. I was thinking about buying a can, until I tried P&C Match Blend John Rolfe, which is twice as nice, a much more robust flavor, and a more noticeable and beguiling aroma. If you like SWR, then I would encourage you to trundle over to the "Bulk Tobacco Alternatives" and try the John Rolfe match. I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised.

A charming bit of pipe history!
I didn't think I'd ever refer to a tobacco as "charming" but this one fits the bill. It's an old-timey pouch tobacco with generations of followers, and the flavor is relatively mild but with enough character that it stands out on it's own and in your memory, so you can understand why it's fans don't get bored of it. Like any pouch tobacco, there's probably a little polypropylene glycol that lends a slightly greasy mouth feel and a little residue in the pipe, but the real oddity about this is the "oatmeal" like cut of the tobacco, which burns unusually hot. I got best results from a wide-bowled bulldog pipe.

Total Satisfaction
Excellent, with a nutty, real tobacco flavor and "classic" room note. I keep three humidors, one for Country Gentleman, one for American Patriot and a third for Missouri Pride. I keep a fourth for a Virginia flake. These are all I want; I am satisfied! Of course MM could do a flake; that would be perfect.

Good Ol' Walty
I'm no tobacco expert, and have a hard time distinguishing one tobacco from another. Walter is definitely different from everything else. Not necessary better or worse, but it's different from, say, Captain Black. Nice to have Walter for a change of pace.

Surprised by SWR
My first ever SWR arrived from Pipes n Cigars very quickly. I just was curious to try old pipe tobacco that have been Around for generations n I'm glad I'm glad I finally did. I'd been a premium English Dunhill etc. Snob for too long. SWR really surprised me. Nice smoothness , stays lit consistent throughout the entire smoke . Very interesting flavor n no bite Nice to find an inexpensive classic that I love for my rotation .....PnC gets it to me fast n should be getting more along with an order of Prince Albert to see how that compares ! No more snobbery for me

At First I hated It - Now it's a Favorite
I picked this up at my local tobacco store after reading some good things about it. I'm in my mid 20s and pretty new to pipe smoking. A lot of old timers were raving about SWR so I thought I'd give it a go. I didn't really know what I was getting into when I first opened the pouch and it looked as if all the tobacco was dry and had a small cut that I wasn't used to. I initially assumed that this must either be the cheapest bargain bin tobacco in the world or it had just been sitting on the shelf too long. I did some research and sure enough this was how it was supposed to be and what people liked about it. I just didn't understand coming from my small world of regular cut, sweet and wet Cavendish. Sadly, the first few times I smoked it I hated it. I thought it must be the most bland and one note tobacco I'd ever tried. But luckily I kept at it as I'm not one to waste good money (or tobacco). One day things just clicked into place for me and I got it. I understood what the fuss was about. I filled my pipe as some old timers on the forums recommended by just dragging my pipe through the pouch and was surprised at how quick and easy it was to load this cut of tobacco. I noticed that I didn't have the tongue bite that came with the wetness of Cavendish thanks to its natural dryness. I stopped hunting for the flavor and the subtlety of the flavors just came on their own. I was surprised at how many flavors I was getting from what I initially thought was a one note kinda smoke. Every now and then it would be sweet and full of that molasses flavor then sometimes it would be more earthy and pure. Sometimes the anise would be just barely noticeable and then other times it would be right in my face and almost overpowering. The thing I found I didn't enjoy was this spicy note that comes and goes. Kinda similar to tongue bite but I knew from my history it wasn't. This is the only thing I find occasionally unpleasant about SWR, but not enough to hate it anymore.

Still cool
Howdy, best pipe tobacco for the last 50 years for me. Always mild with a great aroma and smokes cool especially in a corn cob pipe. So glad to find a source for it.

Not Prince Albert,But Not A Bad Smoke,Either.
Flavor not as good as Prince Albert, but still not a bad Smoke, either.Slow puffing is required here,or you may experiance toungue bite. And use a clean pipe.Easy filling.I don’t think there is a way to pack this too tight, good air flow around the tobacco.Good break in tobacco,or full on every day smoke.

What took me so long?
I've only recently discovered SWR while on vacation in the Catskills. I'd forgotten to pack my tobacco, and the convenience store near our place only had one brand, and only one pouch, and it was SWR. What a pleasant surprise after all these years. Really mellow and tasty, all day smoke with no bite. Now I'm a regular user, what took me so long?
3 out of 5
Not my Favorite OTC
Since the early 60's have smoked mainly OTC blends with Half & Half being my main smoke for over 40 years. Been smoking Granger for the past couple of years. Prince Albert filled in the gaps. Would smoke SWR but could never get the satisfaction I received from the other blends. Also it would quickly dry out in my roll-up pouch. Not my favorite.

Great Neutral Burley Flavor. Odd cut is not great for beginners.
Pros: Great light natural burley flavor. I couldn't taste the top note. Cons: Odd smelling top note that did not effect the flavor at all. The cut is not shredded, it is like small rolled up balls. This makes it a little tougher to pack than the regular ribbon cut. I'm sure once you get the hang of it is fine, but not for a beginner. It had a very tiny amount of bite if I got slightly fast or lit too hot; probably due to improper packing since I am a beginner. Overall: This is a great neutral flavor that everyone should check out for a cheap go-to/break-in tobacco. I may use this as a break-in tobacco if I don't find something equal or less neutral that is easier to pack.
4 out of 5
very smooth provided you smoke slow
The smell when I opened the pouch was pleasant and not over-powering. I smoked the first bowl too hot and it ended up bitter, once I slowed down however, I found that I did enjoy this blend. I plan to try MM's other tobacco blends as well!
2 out of 5
Not for me
When I don't smoke one of my English blends I will go to Carter Hall, Velvet or Half and Half. I tried SWR and found the first half good. The last half went down hill for me. I kept going to it once a week in a cob or briar. No change, it just left a bad taste after the first half. Not for me. I tend to be a puffer and maybe it was smoking to hot.
4 out of 5
Comfortable as an old pair of shoes.!
This, in my humble opinion is the best of the old fashioned American Burley blends that have existed since before WWII. Simple nutty, chocolate flavor with a touch of molasses and a whisper of licorice. Although good on its own in a cob, this tobacco blended 50/50 with Cornell and Diehl's Crooner is one of my favorite home blends. Actually it goes well with any cube cut Burley or bulk Virginia.

Not Too Impressed.
I'm a new pipe smoker and I'm going through all the old-time OTC "drugstore" brands to find the one I want to have a can on hand for an everyday smoke. Then I'll sample all the fancier stuff. I didn't care much for SWR, I'm sorry to say. It left a bad taste in my mouth and tasted to me like a cheap cigar. So far, Prince Albert is topping my list, but I'm growing more and more fond of my can of Granger every day so it's becoming a neck-and-neck race. Still have Velvet, Half & Half, Carter Hall and a few others to try. Didn't care much for Captain Black Gold or Regular so I don't think I'm much of an aromatic fan.

Sir yes sir
A very good blend when you are looking to just set back and burn a bowl and not have to think of anything. Burnes great, taste great. Cant ask for much more than that.

A very satisfactory four star tobacco
This is just a good smoke. A no gunk, no goo non aromatic. I think it's more tasty than PA but not as tasty as Natural Dutch Cavendish.

One of the Best Non- Aromatics
I've only had a couple non-aromatics to compare this with and only tried in a cob, but to this casual smoker it is better than Carter Hall and Prince Albert.

Classic Pipe Tobacco!
Very fragrant and a lovely smoke!

Nice aroma ,cool flavor ,using as morning bowl
Excellent morning bowl, light and refreshing, lights up good, smokes well but not to the end of it,and i fine within as never smoke to the end.i would say 1/2 bowl still aromatic then it spoiling by hit .does not gets to hot, quiet cool and light smoke, and i like that flavor ,near to Carter Hall or Prince Albert or closer to mixture 79 probably as it cut almost in cubes, kind small cuts, dont have even pack bowl, just use gravitation, should try one if you in light aromatic's.
5 out of 5
Old fashion classy stuff
On rotation very much, almost cube cuts, always burns good, testy, and i would call it aromatic rather then regular...very close to mixture 79 -old fhashion and classy stuff, light smoke in hot florida..but aromatics would disapear before you finish it-keep sealed .

Just what I remember...
Recently bought a couple of pouches as I hadn't smoked SWR in many years. While it was never one of my main drugstore buys back in the 60's and 70's I did purchase it occasionally and remember it being a pleasant smoke but not one of my favorites. Well it didn't disappoint me this time around. It had the same crimp cut which clogged one of my pipes, the same pleasant room note, but was totally lacking in the taste department. Just what I remember. I much prefer Half & Half and Granger to this brand just like I did back in the day.

SWR regular
I had never tried Sir Walter Raleigh regular until now because it is not available in my town. I smoke the SWR Aromatic on a regular basis and really enjoy it. Now that I've tried the regular, I really like it too. It reminds me a little of Velvet although not quite as sweet. Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic and Velvet are my everyday tobaccos, but I will now keep a pouch of SWR regular around as well.

Changed
I do not like it. It has changed over the years

An underrated Classic
If you are a fan of Carter Hall and Prince Albert, then Sir Walter Raleigh Regular will seem a bit rough around the edges. But if you’re a fan of Half and Half, then SWR will smoke like electric velvet. Just aromatic enough to barely notice, what you get here is classic OTC burley based smoke with no apologies. Not my favorite, but I keep it around for fun.

basic
a nice pleasant smoke...not complex but straight foward...i have 102 blends in my collection and this one is hardly in the class of my best ones but in saying that, this smoke is always enjoyable and easy to smoke..should be in everyone's rotation

My new favorite Burley/Virginia blend!
This just came two days ago, and I can't wait to order more. It's flavorful, cool burning, and good to the last drop. The only negative I can offer is that the pouch isn't sealed. When I order more, I plan on putting the surplus pouches in a ziplock until I am ready for them.

Nutty
Mild, smooth, yet the strongest of the four Missouri Meerschaum blends. I've read mixed reviews of this blend. Broken flakes were the contents of the pouch. It rubbed out into long ribbons. Nutty Burley is the dominant flavor. Sweet Virginia fills the background. The same Burley and Virginia that's used in Missouri Meerschaum's other blends. This blend has a lot of bitters, sort of like unripened fruits, similar to a green coffee bean. The bitters are unpleasant. A noticeable spice much like hot cinnamon. I kinda liked the cinnamon sensation as opposed to the traditional black pepper essence.

A great American blend style tobacco.
This is a GREAT tobacco blend. The Virginia provides such a sweetness that lasts to the bottom of the bowl and the burley compliments and burns smooth. I could smoke this all day, every day because it provides great flavor and the perfect nicotine balance.

What Pipe Tobacco is Meant to Be
Good ol' fashioned codger burley! Slightly sweet with a hint of Anise, and good, nutty burleys round out the taste. A great work shop or yard work pipe tobacco. No muss, no fuss. Also has a wife approved room note! Go ahead and tack on a couple pouches with your next order.

Disenchanted
The essence is strong enough to hide what little nutty flavor might exist. The tobacco is coarse & full of stem/plugs. I just smoked 'Smoker Friendly-Sweet Natural' that leaves this in the dust from starting at the same OTC price.

Old timey goodness
Love this stuff. Moisture was good, didn't bite, stayed lit well, better nic hit than I assumed, not gunked up with additives and just has that wonderful old school tobacco flavor and aroma. I,m really enjoying all of Russ's old timey blends (midtown series, match blends, old companion etc) and this is right up there with the best of those offerings. I really hope this comes in bulk soon.

Good, solid, anytime American Burley classic. Great for the first smoke of the day, and anytime there after. It's not MacB's Navy Flake, or Dunhill or any other high-end tobacco, but it doesn't pretend to be. Just a good American classic, and I keep it on-hand with the others.

One of the classics. A rich, nutty flavor with some nice hidden notes. A blend that you could smoke all day!
