Amphora Original

A large number of American pipe smokers will be very happy, now that we'll once again be able to enjoy the taste of Amphora. Amphora Original is a Dutch-style Cavendish made from earthy Burley and sweet Virginia, along with a bit of black Cavendish, spicy Turkish and smoky dark-fired Kentucky. The added subtle cocoa note perfectly complements the natural chocolatiness of the Burley, so Amphora Original will have a mellow flavor that's not too sweet, and is a hearty blend that you can enjoy all day long. Welcome back a classic pipe tobacco - Amphora Original.

It's a toss up between
It's a toss up between Amphora Original and Amphora Full Aroma as to which is my favorite all day blend. Original is a classic Dutch Cavendish blend that is smooth, round, and satisfying. It's got some good body and plenty of taste, yet it's not too much for an all day smoke. I began my pipe smoking adventure back in 1970 with Amphora, and now that I'm old and well seasoned in high quality leaf, I've come back to it with delight. In the old days it was made by Douwe Egbert, and now that Mac Baren makes it, It's just as good as I remember it.

The pouch note is what
The pouch note is what I remember. But I don't remember all the moisture and goop. Douwe Egberts' was Dads favorite back in the day. I'm sure that after 30 plus years my tastes have changed. Good tobacco, just not what I'm looking for.

This is good stuff
This stuff is good, real good. I didn't expect much when I got the pouch as a recommendation from a friend and was delightfully surprised when I smoked 4 bowls in the same day. Its got flavor and not like a typical "pouch blend." Easy to keep lit, no tongue bite, flavorful. Its mostly burley, Virginia forward. I am smoking a bowl right now and still say, yep, that's good. However, I think the strength of this tobacco is not mild. I feel the nicotine and I used to be a cigarette smoker and am accustomed to nicotine. Overall, best pouch tobacco I have had thus far and would buy again.

Amphora Original
This is a broken flake. I've never had the original but this is pretty good. I think its better than the Full Aroma. It's more tobacco forward. It's bite free and cool on the bowl. You definitely need to dry this out for 10 to 15 minutes prior to loading your pipe. Any longer and you loose some of the toppings flavors. This and the Full Aroma are the only versions I've had. The cut is not for beginners but a treat for experienced pipe smokers. The flavors are just out of this world. Cocoa and coffee with some spice, I think the spicy sensation is from the dark fired Kentucky. A little tang from the Virginia and sweetness from the orientals. The burley is definitely the chocolate note. Everyone in my family LOVES the room note. I usually buy three pouches at once and put them into a Mason jar. I wish Macbaren would sell this in 7 or 8oz cans. But, it is what it is, and what it is , delicious and relaxing. In my opinion, this is not an all day smoke. It's too rich and flavorful to be puffing on mindlessly. This is better reserved for after supper sitting in the Lazy Boy watching T.V. or reading on your tablet or a good book.

Nice, but not for me
Even though I enjoyed most aspects of this tobacco, its flavor and burn characteristics are quite nice and mellow perfect for a lazy summer afternoon, the particular cut of it is a bit frustrating for filling and lighting in the pipes I own. I shared some with a friend without telling him my take and he expressed much the same issue.

Amphora Original
Outstanding blend. Massive depth. Has the taste of decades of experience. Have tried most brands & mixtures, but day in / day out it's difficult to outperform Amphora Original. Amphora Burley is also tops as are all the Amphora blends. For the price, a difficult line to best.

Keep your tobacco fresh
Welcome back after a long hiatis. Best non aromatic smoke ever. To keep fresh I put it in a canister (coffee can will do) add an orange peel or Apple rind. Never dries out. Sometimes in the package has a tendency to do so. I empty all packages once received and never had a dried out smoke. Good luck.

Long Long Time Vietnam War Era Smoker and Still
Have purchased this Amphora Original since my wife would ship to me in Vietnam and before 1969. Will not smoke anything else! Smooth, never biting!!

Not bad; not bad at all.
I noticed that most of the bad reviews of this tobacco were from smokers who remembered the original and probably expected to get an exact match. I don't believe that is possible with any tobacco unless you have access to the exact blend and toppings of the original. Not being encumbered by having ever smoked the original, I found this mixture quite delightful. Very comfortable, tasty smoke with no bite. Slightly aromatic with a nice room note. I am a Latakia nut so I will use this as a comfortable break in between my favorite Lats.I thoroughly enjoyed this tobacco and will be buying it again.

Amphora Original Blend
Like many others, I had smoked Amphora for years when it disappeared from the American market. I was really happy to see it return. Packs well, smokes smoothly, and has a very pleasant taste and "room". Rarely find a leaf stem or spine in a pouch of Amphora. Recommend to anyone who enjoys a mild, but not too mild smoke.

Quite nice
this was the only amphora that was not entirely slices of a flake but there were a few mixed in. this is a great normal blend not too flavored other than naturally and I can't remember much else, it has to be good because I have finished it off.

Not like the Original, But Still Good
Amphora was one of my main smokes back in the 1970's, when it was made by Douwe Egbert in the Netherlands. Now it is made by MacBarens in Denmark. It doesn't resemble the original Amphora at all in my opinion. But, the good news is it is a really nice smoke in it's own right, no bite and a nice blend, so don't be afraid to try it.

Reliable, good smoke
Great stuff. Satisfying smoke on all counts. Easy light, easy burn, no bite, good flavor, agreeable room note. Packaging insures initial freshness and maintains it pretty well...like tins better.

AMPORA ORIGINAL: MIMICK OF THE ORIGINAL AMPHORA BROWN, BLUE, GREEN, OR RED?
What is confusing is whether this new Amphora Original is trying to mimic the original Amphora Brown, Blue, Green, or Red. The packaging is Red, so perhaps is is copying that full aroma? In the 70s I preferred Amphora Green.

A winner as a regular smoke...
I smoked Amphora back in the 70’s. Luckily, I’ve forgotten what it tasted like so I won’t bother criticizing this newer version because it’s not what my memory recalls. Instead, I’ll take it as it is and review what showed up in the mail...always great delivery service from P&C. I did something almost unheard of...opened the well sealed pouch, fluffed up a pile of slightly too moist tobacco and loaded my number one bent billiard to the top. Lighting was a little tough as it was a bit moist but after a couple of tries, I had it going and was immediately struck with good flavor and a very kind compliment from my wife...loved the aroma. Even moist, it didn’t produce any bite. We drove the 50 miles to our destination...still going and after about a 15 minute conversation with a pipe restorer buddy, I finally finished the bowl...no relights and only two tamps. In between starting and finishing I was treated to a very tasty tobacco blend that had a bit of muscle...no nicotine hit but good flavor and strength and a fine aroma. I can’t get it locally but P&C is a great resource anyway so I won’t be running out soon. I’ll keep this pouch in my pipe bag and probably finish it before I smoke anything else...excepting my early morning and late night Dunhills. This one is a winner. I’ll enjoy it right alongside their new Virginia, another pleasant long duration smoke that I used up straight through after opening. It’s a winner too. This is not as complex as some pricier blends but it really doesn’t need to be, it’s fine as is.

Amphora Original Blend
I smoked Amphora for years until it disappeared from the U.S. market. It was sold as Amphora Regular I had never seen the Original so decided to try it. Ill leave it a 5 stars but the Peter Stokkebye 301 Natural is a better buy at its price. If the Amphora Regular ever shows up ill try it.

Almost as good as the real thing
Amphora was the tobacco of my grandfather and dad, so it was no wonder it ended up my favorite. The new stuff ain't bad- but it's even better when blended with their black cavendish in equal parts, or a 2/1 brown over black. Mix it in a giant zip lock, leave the bag open over night and you'll have a really close version of the original.

Dad’s smoke
My dad smoked this in his pipe in the 70’s and I missed that about him as well as him. He passed away then. This order of Amphora brought that memory back. It is just like I remember. It has a sweet mellow aroma and taste. Amphora is back.

Hard to get good help these days!
Truly, I am glad that Amphora is back. I missed it terribly. I am afraid, however, that the new blends are not nearly as flavorful or tasty as the tobacco which I remember back before they became unavailable here in America. I used to smoke Amphora in the blue, brow and green cans. Can we please get back to the REAL Amphora?

Favorite tobacco
My favorite tobacco and for a long time I wasn't able to find it. My son found pipes and cigars and orfered me some a couple years ago and since it is more affordable here than what I have been smoking I ordered it a couple of times and have really enjoyed it. Thanks for filling the gap.

Rich, smooth, and mellow, Amphora Original has been a favorite of mine for decades. Please keep it in stock at your reasonable rates. I paid over twenty dollars for a 1.75 oz. pouch in Canada a few years ago!

Not as good as I thought it would be
I ordered this on a Wed and got it on Friday. Very fast thankyou. This was my first try with Amphora. When I opened the pouch I like the pouch note. Not overpowering at all. A nice burly scent with a slightly sweet smell. This tobacco packed very well. It also stated lit for most of the bowl. The char light stated lit for quit a while. I relit and it stayed lit for quite a while. It burnt to a light grey ash. Now the down side. To me it was flavorless. I got no chocolate top note or any top note flavor. I was disappointed because there were other good reviews. I never smoked the original Amphora so I have no comparisons. I think I will stick with my English blends and Carter Hall and Lane limited ready rubbed.

Amphora revisited.

An oldie returns
One of my fathers' favorites, and one I smoked early on. Lol. I guess Dad didn't miss a bole or two on occasion. 30 odd years later, it's not what I remembered it being, but then, what is? My tastes have changed I'm sure. A nice blend for those who love Cavendish.

Used to be the best of the best.............No More!
I purchased over a dozen pouches of this from Pipes and Cigars in 2016 and returned them the next day. If you think you are going to get anything near the old Amphora Brown Regular that Dowe Egberts used to make - then better think again. Another reviewer described this current Amphora as "terrible". I have nothing to add to that description.

An Elegant Pipe Tobacco
This is an elegant pipe tobacco, with good manners. It lights easily, stays lit, never bites. It's never heavy or overbearing. I first smoked it in the 1970's and through the 1980's, when it disappeared. I never found anything else that was so consistently satisfying, let alone at a reasonable price. I think of it as refined, and not something that shouts for attention. It's a beautiful blend, a melange, subtle and smooth. I salute the return of Amphora Original.

One of the Greats
Amphora Original does everything a great pipe tobacco should. It's flavorful without being overbearing, burns easily and completely and does not bite. I smoked it as a college student, and I'm glad it's available again today. I wish it came in large cans, as it used to.

An old friend,
Decades ago Amphora was my go to tobacco, especially in my poverty stricken graduate school days. For ten years there was almost always a pouch in my back pocket. This new Amphora evokes memories of long ago and far away. Is it the same as the original? I can't answer that, but it is close enough to bring back many memories. This was a delightfully mild change from my usual strong flake tobacco that I prefer today. Packs well, smokes consistently well, and tastes great.

Takes me back
As I morph into an old geezer I remember the "good ole days" when I would go to the local drugstore and have a dozen or more blends to choose from. Being on a budget I didn't opt for the more premium blends like Amphora very often. It's been years since I smoked it so it's great that it's back. Only rated it 4 stars as it's not as flavorful as I recall and I don't recall there being more than one variety of it back then but I could be wrong so I'll also try the Full Aromatic and see if that's what I remember. Nonetheless it's a solid tobacco experience when a good-tasting, clean- burning smoke is called for but a bit on the pricy side for something not all that unique.

Amphora for the Pipe
When I first took up the pipe in 1965 I tried many blends but settled on Amphora Original. There was a period where Amphora was not available and I quit smoking. When I found it in Pipes and Cigars, I immediately ordered. Its like having an old friend back in my life. Thanks for making available.

This will be in my rotation for sure!
New pipe smoker here, so I had to try out the return of this classic while figuring out what my blend and tastes are. Tried it first in a small cob and was underwhelmed. But after putting it in a bigger bowl, wow! The nutty flavor is prominent and more refined than the "codger" burleys I've tried, and I could swear there is anise or something else in there too. Chocolate is really muted, mostly just great tobacco flavor. It has become my go to outdoor smoke, perfectly suited for spring time. I will be ordering multiple pouches next time, or a tub if they ever make one.

Finally back with us.
Finally back in the U.S. An all day smoke. Simple pleasure. Never bites even when you rush. Chocolate notes I believe from the burley but pure tobacco flavor. In no way an aromatic! For those who like burley with a little extra flavor to keep keep your smoke interesting- must try. Not a run of the mill blend even if it is sold like one. Masculine roommate- a bit musty. Receives my highest recommendation.

Amphora Returns
Tried both the Original and the Full. A little different from what I remember. Could not detect a lot of difference between the two. Received the new Black cavendish and look forward to trying it soon. All and all, both are really good blends and if you're not looking to smoke a bakery, you should enjoy both. Keep the embers burning

Straight forward and no non-sense
If your looking for a pipe tobacco that pulls no punches, then try Amphora Original. I prefer this as a change of pace, when smooth and steady is called for. Amphora Original delivers reliably every-time. Room note is decent, and not fragrant, and best of all no bite from start to finish. I can recommend Amphora Original, give it a try.

A European take on American Burley?
I never tried the original version of this blend, but I do like it. I'm a sucker for burley! It's lighter than light. And smooth. Pack it tight and be careful not to puff too hard for flavor, you will hurt yourself and ruin the overall taste. Imagine the smoothness of Granger, but without the unique liquor topping. If there is any topping in Amphora Original, it's very faint. The room not isn't bad, but probably won't please any ladies. Use Full Aroma for that!

Pretty good stuff
Smoked Amphora in college back in the early 60's so couldn't resist getting some of this to try out. You get a mahogany colored, ribbon cut mixture with some larger partially broken pieces, perfect moisture level that packs easily. Don't smell any casing/topping, just the "hay" smell of cavendish processed tabak. Easy to keep lit. Gives a smooth bite free smoke that tastes like a nice burley/VA mix. This seems to be a nice, not-quite-exciting-but-good, Dutch cavendish. I think I'll keep a pack of this around for my change of pace tabak. Recommended.

Amphora Original
I was absolutely thrilled to get some of this, along with Amphora Red. I used to smoke it every day in the early 1970's. I got away from pipe smoking for a few decades, then bought some nice pipes when I quit cigarettes. I searched everywhere trying to find this tobacco, only to find it unavailable in USA. Sadly, my memories were better than the reality. I bought both Original and Full Amphoras. Neither is remarkable to me now. I finally mixed both into a 12 ounce can of Captain Black Royal, which is allowing me to use it up as an extender. Not bad, but didn't live up to the memories. I will stick with the Captain Black Royal, or Borkum Riff Original. It was nice to get to try it again, but either my tastes have changed or the new stuff is different. Not a particularly good flavor or aroma.

Thanks
Great smoke. Brings back many fond memories. I bought over 10 of the pipes they offered in the 60s using coupons found in the tins and packs. The original is the best. Alan H.

Welcome Back Old Friend!
I started smoking "Brown Amphora" in the 1960's, and it was my favorite until it was taken off the U.S. market in the early 1990's(?). Thank goodness it's back! I love the nutty, true, tobacco taste and aroma of this old standby.

amphora original
I smoked Amphora Original for years until it was no longer available in the US. The MacBaren version is good but there is something missing from the original Douwe Egbert blend. I can't put my finger on it, but it is a little different. Perhaps it is not as clean burning and the aroma is not as enticing as the original.

YAAAAAY!!!
I've been an Amphora smoker for decades- as have my father, grandfather and great-grandfather- and had to quit my pipe when they decided not to export this staple years back. This is (IMHO) possibly the best tobacco ever made; There are perfumes, flavors or residual aftertastes to deal with- it's pure- and I'm only disappointed that the 13oz. tins are not offered. ...yet
