Blending - Granulated Perique

Rare and precious, this dark, fragrant condiment tobacco comes to us in wooden casks from St. James Parish, Louisiana, where it has been produced in time-honored fashion since the days when the natives pressed it in tree trunks. Use it sparingly in your blends for its distinctive cooked-fruit, musty, mushroom-like aroma and cool-smoking character. This version has been ground down allow for easier and more thorough blending.

Strong nic is subjective
I add less then 10% to most of my English blends. I found this perique to be of high value, correct moisture level and fine enough cut to easily blend with my favorite English blends. As a ex smoker I just require more nic. Nuff said

TWO THUMBS UP!!!
Perfect cut for blending, the other Perique offered here is a long, "shag" cut that makes it difficult to mix in evenly to a blend whereas this one disperses nicely and gives more balance to the blend. TWO THUMBS UP!

Use sparingly a little goes a Long way
I am new to enjoying a pipe and as such have developed a certain, what I like to call, “flavor profile” and have stayed inside those boundaries...until recently. I read quite a bit about the history of this tobacco and had to try it. Naturally, I wanted to see what it was like by itself; this is not something I recommend as a practice but definitely something you should do ONCE...a small pinch...in a clean pipe (preferably a tasting pipe). The flavor was not what I expected nor did I get the nicotine “rush” I read about but all in all, I liked it. The experiment was something akin to tasting different types of salt (pink vs black vs kosher). It is a great enhancer to a blend you are developing for yourself or as a condiment to one that you may find a little lacking. I would suggest everyone have a bit in a jar on hand; you won’t be sorry. Honestly, I have a jar labeled “Kitchen Sink”, it is everything I have left from the various tobaccos I have tried and didn’t have enough left for a full bowl or sometimes a couple of pinches from some I want to play around with, lots of Lane blends, a bit of John Bull and of course a couple of healthy pinches of the Perique (the granulated mixes the best) and you know what? It is pretty tasty. Again, get some of this and see for yourself.
