Not smoked this in many years, still tastes the same, still has a bit of roughness. I'll try blending it with some others.

This is my first pipe tobacco! The flavor is excellent!

I haven't smoked the Captain in over 10 years. I've just got back in to smoking and this time around, I've started off with a cob pipe. Cob seems cooler than briar and it's lighter. I started out with a pipe shop blend, but it seemed to burn just a tad, no matter how I packed it. I added some Captain Black to it and it cooled down. Thought that was kinda odd. I missed the "taste" more than the smell of the tobacco. People that don't smoke, look at me strange when I tell me I like the taste the best.. Smoking a cob really brought out the flavor ! My wife used to love the smell of my pipes, but being absent for over a decade, she's a sight for sore eyes.. I only smoke a bowl a day and not in the house. There are other blends I'd like to try down the road, but for right now, I'm not jumping ship.

It took me 40 years to finally bring myself to try this blend. I avoided it out of preconceived snobbery. I'm sorry I didn't get to this blend sooner. It was a pleasant surprise for me. I'll definitely be adding this to my rotation.

Captain Black Original Gets My Vote! This one really competes for my attention with my other aromatic smokes and yes I tried the Bokum Rift one, but the Captain gets it! Cheers Captain, All Aboard!

Really enjoyed the aroma and smooth taste.

For starters, at first I was disappointed with this and was hoping for a stronger smell and flavor. Then it grew on me until this is one of my favorite tobaccos. The initial thing I disliked (light and mild smell and flavor) became what I love about it. Bowl: Ok bowl note, but not much. Smells like sweet tobacco, but not a distinct "vanilla" or "cream", just sweet. Very light. Room: Seems like this would be impossible to be offensive because of how light it is with a hint of sweetness. If someone is complaining about this, they must be complaining about the smoke in general and not the aroma. Great fresh light. Considering it's not very flavored in many ways it has a better room note than many Sutliffs I've tried with bold names like "Vanilla" and "Maple" in the titles. Room note initially just smelled like "tobacco" to me, but it really grew on me and definitely smells sweeter (and better) than plain tobacco. Mouth: Flavor and room note are about the same--very light, barely a taste, but at the same time very smooth and zero bite. Stays lit very well and burns cool, even when I'm puffing a lot. Verdict: I would buy this again, and it's now one of my favorite tobaccos. I also tried Captain Black Royal, but still prefer Original. My favorite brand I've come across has been Lane, and I had no idea this was made by Lane Limited until I noticed it in tiny font on the pouch one day. Now it makes sense why I love it.

I have smoked Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey on occasion but I had never tried the original. I like it better than the Bourbon Whiskey. The taste of it, sort of reminds me of the whiskey flavored Borkum Riff blend but I Iike it better.

Very good tobacco very good aroma but the only drawback is the tongue bite. There's a hint of vanilla and a chocolate essence.

My original go-to pipe tobacco. It’s not as mild as gold, and it’s basic and lovely. It’s easy to keep lit and smells like an unexpected evening of leisure.

One of the first aromatics I tried and I continue to smoke it years later. A nice vanilla flavor in harmony with the other tobaccos. It does fade some after halfway through the bowl.

While jogging on the beach one day a very pleasant aroma caused me to stop and look around. My eye caught a gentleman enjoying a pipe. I asked what it was he was smoking, he answered "Captain Black" The rest is history! Captain Black is still my favorite!

The dark wasn't available in the cans so I went with this. not a fan of the wimpy 7 ounce cans but oh well there is always Prince Albert.

Recently tried for the very first time and was pleasantly surprised. Very smooth and mellow with a satisfying room note. Burns cool with no bite.

WOW! After years of being a Balkan Supreme: VaPer/ Non aromatic piper, I started really enjoying aromatics! I’ve bought several tins and types of tobacco here and I have to say that Captain Black Original blows me away! The pouch note is caramel, and a fruity/ floral note. I didn’t detect much of a room note but what did smell was very pleasant. No tongue bite, stays lit, very mild pleasant in the palate. Retrohale is like the palate but more subdued. This, in my opinion, is a CONSTANT smoke all the way through! Definitely an all day smoke. Because of the price, this may become my new “Go to.” Thank you, as always, Pipesandcigars for excellent service and FAST delivery.

I grew up with my dad smoking captain black; filling the room with that vanilla scent. He passed away recently so I decided to purchase some for myself. I typically smoke English or light aromatic blends that come from a tin so I was surprised by the quality of this pouch tobacco! Love the cavendish and the room note does not disappoint! Cheers dad!

Captain Black is by far my favorite of the two in this battle. The two are similar in their tastes and profiles, the Bokrum has a bit of a bite to the back end of it.

I smoked "Black & Mild" pipe tobacco for years but switched to Captain Black almost 20 years ago when Middleton changed their formula. Captain Black is a great smoking tobacco and I never get complaints about the odor.

VERY smooth and it's my go to now favorite smoke no.

This was one of the first tobaccos I tried. Has a vanilla flavor to it. Until I develop my tasting a bit more, I'd go with cheaper blends. But it's one of the most popular blends for a reason.

What more can I say?: a classic smoke that will have you wanting more. Fully flavored without a bite that should please the pallet and the olfactory senses.

I started smoking pipes in 1990 and captain black was one of the 1st tobacco's I had tried along with borkum riff.. I put the pipe down put the about 10 years ago and finally got back to it. Was good to enjoy this old standby.

Relatively new to pipe smoking I found the taste be a little boring. I've smoked cigars for years and my taste profiles need to be adjusted. In addition to the BR Original I purchased some Balkan Sasieni and Mac Beran Navy Flake. Both of these were more satisfying and had more depth on the taste profiles. The BR Original isn't a bad tobacco, just not what I'm looking for at this point.

Captain black regular. A.k.a. white. What can be said about this OTC blend. This is truly a fantastic all day smoke. I come back to this time and time again along with Royal. The nutty burly that is in this amazing tobacco really brings the aromatic flavor together You owe it to yourself to give it a try

I'm always amazed at the range of flavors that guys say they can taste in tobaccos. I stretch my imagination to taste what they do. Sometimes I can agree. Other times, not so much. I smoke a lot of different tobaccos, from expensive tins to cheap, bulk bags. Most of the time, my experience with each varies considerably, depending upon the time of day, how fast I smoke and even down to the size of the pipe I'm using. Captain Black original never disappoints me, There is good reason that it's been a stable for pipe smokers for 60 years. Mellow, a bit sweet and with little bite (smoke slowly), it is a great go-to tobacco when I just want to sit and relax. Nothing overpowering, just a wonderful taste of natural tobacco processed just right for an experienced smoker. Very nice with a glass of bourbon or scotch in the evening, or with a cup of joe in the morning.

The Original Captain Black is one of my long time favorite ..it has little bite and a nice Cavendish flavor. I like the cut of this tobacco and moisture content..I find the quality is always consistent .

I am on again off again pipe smoker, but when I am on again, I always return to Captain Black Original. If I smoke cigars, my wife strongly encourages me "to do that outside", but she loves the aroma of Captain Black Original pipe tobacco. I enjoy smoking this tobacco so it just works at our house.

New pipe smoker here and this was recommended by a lot of people. Bag note I get dark chocolate and booze-soaked cherries. The smoke is sweet and I get faint hints of fruit. The room note is pleasant and it burns real smooth no bite. at the end of the bowl the fruit dies down and sweetness goes away but the smoke is still pleasant. this will be added to my buy again list as a daily smoker and is Cellar worthy.

I was led to believe that Capt. Black original was one of the best. It's just OK. I would not purchase again.

I started smoking Captain Black flavors about 15 years ago, quit pipes for a while and recently started back up again. All burn well, flavorful with pleasant smell.

This is my favorite go to for my pipe. Its soo smooth and smokes well. Ive gotten a few complements on the good aroma as well.

I didn't think I was going to like it when I first opened the bag and smelled it. It smells very sweet but the taste is only slightly sweet. Very enjoyable. Will definitely buy again.

I enjoy Capt'n Black, Original and Dark are the only two I have tried and the casing is the same for both, which is a liquor, vanilla-ish scent and flavor. The dark burns and smokes rather well, and the original adds some kick to the blend with the addition of VA and Burley. I will try Royal in due time, and Im sure I will enjoy it. I do not smoke alot of aro's but I always enjoy my bowl of CB, every time!

When I picked up pipe smoking a little over a year ago my father told me this was my grandpas everyday smoke, so I knew i had to try it & wow the old man had some great taste!! I've tried about 15 different blends this year (Mostly aromatics) & Borkum Original is right up there at the top! It has a strange almost spicy raisin flavor.

You can never go wrong with Captain Black Original!

Captain Black Original has always been my fall back tobacco. It was my first tobacco that I ever smoked when I started smoking a pipe. I enjoy trying different blends of tobaccos and will always compare their taste and aroma to good old Captain Black.

Love it. I smoked Captain Black for 60 years. Have tried other brands over the years but always come back to Captain Black. I am however disappointed the company stopped offering it in bulk.

Great tobacco, especially for a more "common" selection. I highly recommend this for the new smoker who is looking for a smoke that captures that stereotypical "pipe tobacco" taste and aroma.

I very much enjoy Captain Black Original. The taste is very good, the smoke is cool and complete. If you prefer something sweet then it is definitely worth a try, although for the money I think there are better options. This is why it only gets 3 stars from me. In pouch form the moisture content is all over the board. I have had some that were perfect, some that were drowned in liquid, and some that were so dry it literally crumbled in my fingers. I haven't had the notion to buy a tin yet, simply because of the price. When the moisture content is right, it is a fantastic smoke. When the moisture is off though, there is definite taste of synthetic or fake flavorings. Does tend to bite a little bit if you're a heavy puffer, which I am. I believe everyone should at least try Captain Black original, because when it's right, its right. Because of the high cost and Russian roulette of moisture, it only gets 3 stars from me.

This is the tobacco that got me interested in pipes. Way back when smoking was allowed indoors a customer at a restaurant where I worked told me what he was smoking. I loved the aroma, so I remembered Captain Black. Decades later I had moved on to a variety of obscurely names tobaccos, but recently decided to return to the beginning. Captain Black is still great stuff. Not too fancy, but great.

Mild, nice easy smoke

I had the cherry before this one, so I'm pleased the flavor wasn't used to hide anything. This tobacco is phenomenal.

I am new to the pipe smoke arena and of the few tobaccos I have smoked, Captain Black is so far the best. I would highly recommend this blend for any new smoker. It has a wonderful room and pouch note and doesn't leave a nasty after taste.

What more can I say than the title, this is my all-time reliable favorite tobacco, it never lets me down. Early morning, late at night, all day long... it tastes wonderful, smells wonderful (even for non-smokers) and leaves the office smelling like grandpa's workshop. This is the King of pipe tobacco. One cannot top the smoothness of the smoke and the pleasant lingering aroma that this jewel leaves behind. I received a smoking jacket and a Hugh Heffner mask due to the fact that my wife loved it so.much.

Captain Black takes the win here. Both are good, but CB just tastes and smells like I imagine a pipe should. Mellow and sweet with a classic room note...

As with all the comments above I found the price for the tobacco to good not to try it. I’m not sure if it will replace my Seven Sea’s Regular blend or the Seven Sea’s Royal. Both of which I swap back and forth. But I find the Borkum Riff the be a tobacco I will go to again it smoked cool. I did have to re-light it a couple of times. The room note did not disturb my wife and it smoked very cool and I’m a fast smoker. The flavor is unique in that toward the end of the bowl there was a taste maybe an after taste would be a better term that was pleasant and made me think I’d like another bowl. Anytime I’m out of my Seven Sea’s and see the Borkum Riff original I’ll not hesitate to buy a pouch.

Borkum Riff is a very mild, pleasant smelling pipe tobacco. I have often received compliments from non-smokers about its aroma. It packs well and stays lit after the 2nd light better than most other pipe tobaccos I have tried. I have enjoyed it for the past 25+ years.

OK...Here it is. Vanilla is my favorite aromatic. I've tried them all and the only one that delivers is Cap't Black original. None of the other brands that advertise vanilla are even close ! I once tried Sutliff "vanilla royale " which boasted 14 different types of vanilla . It might have been ok if they had actually put some them in the tobacco ! Instead I got a bowl of tasteless fire . After 3 bowls of this stuff over 2 days,I just dumped the bag in the trash. If you want vanilla,just buy Cap't. Black original . Don't waste your money on bland ,hot imitations.

The best tobacco .

My favorite so far. I use it in my firefly vaporizer for herbs. Works like a charm and you need hardly any. With practically no smell. Smells more like some one just made tea in the house and not at all like tobacco smoke. Smokes really good too when i use it that way.
