Comoy's Cask 4 (Tin & Bulk)

This item is no longer available for purchase.

Comoy's Cask #4 starts with top-notch Virginias, of the bright range, which are blended with a condimental amount of spicy Perique. A very light, almost unnoticeable top note is added and then the tobaccos are pressed and sliced, producing a flake with a dark sweetness and a citrusy character.

A True "All Day Smoke"
Comoy's Cask No. 4 is a real special tobacco. This qualifies as the proverbial "All Day Smoke" which combines availability, affordability, smokability, and flavor in a bulk tobacco. Of course, for those dedicated English blend (Latakia) smokers this might not satisfy, but for VA/Per lovers this is really a good mild smoke. I buy it 8 oz. at a time and keep it in a large bale wire jar. I will admit that there were a few times that I needed to age it or it may have been too moist to smoke right out of the jar, but overall this is an excellent tobacco and I recommend having half a pound or more in the cellar.

A Great Choice
After trying a range of VaPer’s I’m beginning to settle on Cask #4 as part of my rotation. I’m found that for my palate I can truly taste both the bright Virginia’s and peppery Perique in this blend. Whereas some of the other more prolific and highly regarded brands have been nothing more than hot air on the tongue. This is faithful in flavor from the first light to the final, leaves little to no moisture, and smokes to the bottom with few relights. I’m very happy with the bulk option and will certainly come back for more.

Try this tobacco in bulk, the price is right.
It is a good tobacco, came a little dry. I did not smoke it all yet, but what i smoked tasted pretty good, and i would reccomend this tobacco to any pipe smoker that likes aromatics to try this non aromatic blend. thank you Frank.

One of the best VaPers
Comoys Cask 4 is an excellent VaPer. Smooth and delicious. Similar to PS Luxury Navy Flake but without the little bite the PS has, which might be due to the rum I heard it has. Since I retired a few years ago my smoking has increased to the point that I smoke almost constantly (5 to 7 oz. a week), so I searched for a go to tobacco that I could enjoy and was cost effective. Comoys Cask 4 fit my requirement exactly, smokes great, taste great and no bit when smoked one bowl after another. I purchase by the kilo when I can. I’m not very good at reviewing tobacco because I don’t seem to get the nuances that other smokers seem to get. I just know when I like a particular tobacco.

Excellent. I love it

Very Nice VaPer
Nice grassy Virginia notes. The added Perique gives it a little more tang and flavor than, say, Dunhill Flake, but without being harsh

Outstanding Navy Flake
Navy flake made with dark Virginia and Perique. Reminds me of Orlik Golden Sliced but a bit darker and maybe a bit more perique. Good all-day smoke, smooth and satisfying. It really comes alive in my Dr. Grabow Lark which has a small bowl. May bite a little if pulled on hard but the rich flavor invites sipping. Not surprised it comes in 100g cans. Adding this to my rotation.

Popeye didn't smoke spinach; I think he smoked Cask 4
Great Navy Flake. I agree with another person's review comparing Cask 4 to other standards as "spicy-sweet". All-day type with enough vitamin-N to keep you interested. It can burn a little warm, so be sure to let it breathe a little and use a smaller bowl.

From the Comoy Line
A rich brown peat like Carter Hall, an unexpected old brand I ever bought in the late 90's. A little bit of yellow Virginia's I think, and a comparably hefty portion.

All-day VaPer heaven.
For me this is a wonderful all-day smoke. The flakes are thin enough to fold-and-stuff, but I usually rub half a flake between two fingers quickly before nestling it into the bowl. then repeat. It lights easily, and stays lit. It gives you all the Virginia hay/grass flavor you're expecting, plus a citrus-like tang that I find sets it apart from others of this genre that I've tried. It's a great companion in the car, doesn't bite. I have gotten it in bulk and in the "paint can" and can't report much difference. If you're trying for the first time, buy the tin because it's nice and you'll re-use it for something else later.

A VA flake with teeth
I use three blends as the spectrum points for VA flake tobacco flavor: Dunhill Flake (tea-sweet), Orlik Golden Sliced (balanced-sweet), and Comoy's Cask No 4 (spicy-sweet). This flake blend offers the basic hay-like Virginia experience but with a bit of a kick. There's something sort of lemon-y about it and there is a sneaky undertone of peppery sting. It needs to be dried a good bit right out of the tin or bag, but it does smoke well after that. It really is a satisfying smoke, no question, and it deserves to be tried. I favor smoky, rich Cask 11, but Cask 4 is a nice inclusion in anyone's rotation.

A good, honest VA-per - not for the somker with a sweet tooth
A good smoke, for sure. This is a VA-per for the smoker whose taste for the Virginia side has been overtaken by his taste for perique. It's a little harder and more serious than something like Dunhill Flake. I think I prefer Dunhill's sweet hay with a touch of pepper to Comoy's neutral leafy-ness with its fairly present kick. If Dunhill Flake were Port wine, Then Cask No 4 would be Malbec.

Love at first light!
Trying H&H's Signature Series Drawing Room piqued my curiosity about Perique...so I took a chance based on many positive reviews and ordered a half pound of this in my last order. My first bowl of this, I rubbed it out fairly well and loaded it it a late 30s KBB bent Carburetor...the charring light almost made my eyes water as I caught part of it on a French inhale...wow! I am a lover of all things spicy, so that started a love affair with this tobacco. It settled down beautifully on the first real light, and gave a wonderful smoke with a tangy, citrus like flavor, with the earthy spiciness of the perique playfully coming in and out...especially apparent on the retrohale. This is really good stuff! I find it to smoke differently depending on preparation...fold and stuff provides a different flavor profile, perhaps with flavors shifting more often...and rubbing it partially out changes it yet again. Versatility...a good thing. Being uncertain I would like the perique content, in the same order I purchased half a pound of Sutliff Virginia Slices, so I could play a bit with blending my own VaPer...and this has proved to be a match made in heaven! I vary the amount of Cask #4 depending on how much zest I am in the mood for, rubbing out enough to fill a 1.75 ounce tin at a time, which I leave cracked for a few days for a little drying out (lots of moisture in these flakes)...and this is rapidly becoming my all day smoke. No doubt about it, Cask #4 is where most of the flavor comes from, with the Virginia Slices bringing a subtly different sweetness and moderating the perique tingle. This is a great tobacco, whether on its own or blended with virginias, or even Sutliff Heavy English (another knockout flavor!). This is firmly in my top five, for good reason.

What a great flake.
I ordered this bulk to try it out. What a great flake, this tobacco came ready right out of the bag. I have used the fold and stuff as well as rubbed it out and it has smoked wonderfully both ways. Great Virginia hay like flavor and the Perique gives just a bit of tang. Very nice.

A quality non-aromatic...
Being an avid smoker of non-aromatics and VaPer's in particular, I find this blend right in my wheel house...haylike and citrusy tin note...not much evidence of the Perique to my nose....upon the light, sweetish Virginia greets my pallet and midway through the bowl the Perique shows up...just a touch on the back half of my tongue. PSLNF has more Perique to my pallet and if forced to choose, I'd side with PS. Having said that, I first smoked this from the tin and found it spicier than bulk...FWIW....all in all, a quality smoke.

Although I'm more of an aromatic smoker. I very much enjoyed this Cask #4 and will always keep a few tins around.

Bought this instead of PS luxury navy flake as it was backordered. same price. identical in appearance/cut. i found them to be (at least for me) similar enough i couldn't tell a difference. This is a solid VaPer flake. fold it, stuff it, enjoy it.

Outstanding tobacco! Great taste and aroma. I will be buying more of this.
SO of Quincy, IL
It's a good smoke. It reminds me so much of Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake that I usually stick with the Stokkebye as my everyday smoke. The Cask 4 is a touch cleaner on the burn, but my daily smoke provides a greater value. Neither really provides much of a perique influence, but the sweet on the Virginia is clear. Try both. See for yourself.

I love Comoy's Cask 4...smokes cool...Got to let it dry out for 2-3hours before smoking it because it will burn un-even but other then that it just great.
