Cornell & Diehl Night Train

Cornell & Diehl Night Train is an excellent illustration of the Va/Bur/Per genre, with three different types of Virginia combined with some stout and earthy Burley, capped off with tangy, robust Perique. This mixture is pressed into a crumble cake to deepen and mature the flavors. If you're a little bored with the typical VaPer or Burley blend, try C&D's Night Train.

Needs time and drying out
A very good mix that should be tried if you are a C&D fan. Breaking up the Kake and letting it dry a bit makes it a great blend.

Interesting and enjoyable
This was my first crumble cake tobacco, and it took a while to figure out how it smokes- out of the can I found it was difficult not to overstuff due to high moisture content and fineness to which I had broken it down- I had to coddle the first bowl a bit to get it to burn without gurgling, but smoked great once it got the airflow to where it needed to be. Up front the burley shines through nutty, toasty, and with a nice oat flavor that is balanced by the sweetness of the Virginias. It didn’t take long for the perique to take over, which I found to be spicy and fig-laden, but not particularly peppery. I caught occasional distinctive pear notes (from the Cavendish?), especially during the first half of the bowl. The nicotine is definitely there, which was fairly strong, but definitely not overwhelming. Has an interesting sweet hay/oatmeal tin note that is slightly sour in a nice way. Overall, a really interesting and enjoyable smoke!

Wonderful and complex!
I don't often write reviews, but since this product only has one at the time of my writing, I thought I would opine... I bought a two ounce tin of this tobacco to try, unsure if I would like it based on the component tobaccos. The first three bowls I smoked, I hated - in fact, after the third bowl I decided that I wouldn't smoke it again, and would either give it away or throw it away when it dried out. For some reason, I decided to smoke a fourth bowl and I'm so glad I did; this time I was blown away by the variety of complex flavors! I smoked a fifth bowl and experienced the same... Sweet VA flavors, maybe a hint of sweetness from the cavendish, loads of spice from the perique, and some rich body from the burley. I'm not sure what the difference was - maybe the tin having been opened for a few weeks? Maybe the fact that the fourth and fifth bowls were smoked in cobs instead of briars? I do know that I will surely reorder (and always smoke in a cob from now on)!

I love this blend!
I smoked this to help me give up cigarettes several years ago. It has some Nicotine kick and no overbearing room note. I still enjoy a bowl from time to time especially if you’re up late and need a pick me up. It has a Great flavor and it ages beautifully!
