Cornell & Diehl came across an exceptional batch of Virginia grown in the Carolinas. They knew that this leaf was truly special, so they wanted to showcase it in a spectacular way. So they blended and layered these tobaccos and pressed them without any top dressing, relying on the amazing natural quality of the tobacco itself. The tobacco was then sliced into flakes and packaged. The result is a zesty, all-Virginia tobacco with hay/grass sweetness and a bit of yeastiness. Production is very limited and it's incredible right out of the tin, but you'll probably want to grab as many as you can because Cornell & Diehl Small Batch Carolina Red Flake will probably age amazingly well.

Hay and sugar
Exceptionally good paired with Kentucky straight bourbon, which brings out the sweetness of the Virginia. When not paired with bourbon it is slightly acidic, with lots of hay. Not as deep and smooth as I expected from a red Virginia. If becomes available again I’ll buy more.

If only it were more plentiful
Wow, is all I can say and should be sufficient for any review. This is one of the most enchanting tobaccos I’ve ever had the privilege of enjoying. Right out of the tin it has a citrusy, sweet grass smell that simply pops. Then with lighting, the flavor goes straight in with a tangy ephemeral sweetness which is reminiscent of what hay fields smell like in late summer nearing harvest. From here the flavor matures into zesty spice with earthy tones and a dark fruit essence. It smokes to a fine white ash and leaves very little to no moisture in the bowl. This is truly a fine tobacco and with any luck we’ll see it re-released again sometime soon.

not bad
I was hoping for something close to my sorely missed Mcclelland 5300. Its not that, but it isn't bad. Guess it's as close as we are likely to get. A bit plain, but I like it enough that I will probably try to snag a couple tons when it's available.

Good while it lasted
Short lived blend, I really enjoyed it.

I'm keeping my four tins. No evidence of anything amiss in any of them. And it's as good as the early reviewers thought it was. No bite. Smooth as silk. A much deeper fuller flavor with fewer hay-like notes than most straight Virginias. Just terrific. A great pity that no more will be forthcoming.
