Excellent tobacco
1st hit is powerful like eating an Andies chocolate mint but after that it's totally smooth and not too bold. A very mellow nice flavored menthol that has no harshness. Doesn't hurt the throat. Will only buy this from now on.

Three Sails
Similar to Bali Red but in some respects better - and far less expensive. Mild, tasty and easy to handroll.

Smooth
Good for making cigarettes because it is finely cut and quite smooth.

A nice smooth puff
This is a great tobacco for RYO. Bright, yet mellow. Fresh, but just a little thick to its smokiness.

Pretty good
First go at the legendary MYO. The cut is what sets it apart. It is a very fine shag and it stuffs beautifully and can make a tight cigarette easily. Flavor is nice and there's nothing offensive about it but not mind-blowing. Very smooth and medium-rich but to me lacks a little edge. High quality. Has some kind of casing that is vaguely alcohol-like, and I wonder how the raw tobacco would taste without it. Richer than a, say, AS standard cigarette but missing some of that brand's sharpness. Good all-day smoke. Will buy again and want to try others.

Its cigarette tobacco. Trust me, an ex-cigarette stuffer.
I'm an ex-cigarette smoke. D&R was the greatest gift to those of us who stuffed our own tubes. This is cigarette tobacco and always will be. They don't even try to cut it for pipes, its the same stuff I used to buy love and inhale. If you like a cigarette, this is good stuff. I cant imagine its any good as a pipe tobacco.

A Grand and Pleasant Smoke
I bought two tins of this recently and was utterly satisfied with my purchase! I had a bit of a problem with delivery which I believe was my fault as I double-clicked the purchase page and received no confirmation email. When it hadn't arrived in a week, I called and spoke to Tiffany, I believe, - the package was here late the next day!!! (Thank you Tiffany). As for the tobacco, just opening the tin brought a grand and pleasant aroma to the room. The bowlful only enhanced that. A superb and smooth smoke and flavor without being over-powering. I whole-heartedly agree with what a previous reviewer, Roger G., states in his raving of the attributes of this fine product. Thank you Pipes and Cigars, Tiffany, and Daughters and Ryan for putting this out here for sale...Tim E.

I like it!
I really like this tobacco. Has the fresh hay tin aroma and for me had just the right moisture content. It burns evenly and all the way to the bottom of the bowl with one light. Room note was mild and not offensive. Will buy more of this!

Great smoke
This is a mellow sweet tobacco that works excellent as RYO or in a pipe. I will be buying this again.

For those that say it is not pipe tobacco give it another try.
For those that say it is not pipe tobacco give it another try. I found it to be a bite free, few relight, sweet tasting moderate nicotine delight. It's also nice to pack at the top of a flake to help hide my poor flake technique.

Cigarette tobacco
C'mon guys, this is not a pipe tobacco. I should have read the reviews closer. Not too terribly bad but definitely a RYO.

Three Sails.
Bought 8 ounces bulk of this and recently finished it off. It's not bad to be clear, but it's definitely not great. I found it to be smooth with a slight sweet undertone. This Virginia was smooth to the point of feeling as though I was drawing no smoke. No bite whatsoever. If that's your preference then you're looking at the right tobacco. The flavor I found was almost non-existent, taking it after or with coffee or tea allowed me clear my taste buds enough to taste the sweet undertones, they are there just very subtle. This tobacco does come very dry while rehydrating is simple enough, smoking this beforehand it will burn very fast. This may be attributed to the cut. This does make a great blend when mixed with Burley which makes Three Sails shine and will bring out the best in Burley blends. All in all not a great tobacco, but not necessarily bad.

World's Greatest...but not for a pipe.
99% of the reviews here fall into A. those that bought this for and smoked it in a pipe, and B. those who used it for rolling or injecting in a "small cigar" format. Those that are pipers tend not to like this so much. Those that use it as intended (RYO/MYO) think it's just about the best blend in the world. This stuff is literally the darling of the RYO/MYO world. In a white paper tube it is sweet, mild on the tongue but with great character and finesse. It is potent, but not overly so. It is blendable and forms an excellent base. Quite literally, for a pipe smoker to say this is bad tobacco just shows their ignorance. In fact, it is one of the most excellent tobaccos in the world...extraordinary quality. However...It does not do as well in a pipe, being designed for a different 'modus operandi'.

Alright
For a cheap tobacco, it's not bad. When I'm in a pinch this is the go to. Not really anything to right home about, but all in all it gets the job done when all else is out. Would I buy again, probably; would I be thrilled about having to do so, not really.

Bright Smoke
Good and bright smoke. You can enjoy these smokes specially in summer or early morning with dark roast coffee. Must give a try.

Disappointed
My 1st disappointing pipe tobacco. I bought it based off the number of reviews but did not enjoy it, myself.

4.5 stars! Good stuff.
I ordered an ounce at first and I liked it so much, I ordered a pound. Have I found the one??? Great cut. Makes it easy to compact for hunting trips. Burns great, stays lit but never hot. Nice and smooth. Will order two different D&R tobaccos before I settle on this one for good. The quality is good enough that I have faith in them. Oh, and when you order the pound, the bag it comes in (from the manufacturer, not P&C's "re-bag") is great! Thick and actually airtight.

great RYO tobacco
have tried a couple of the Daughters & Ryan tobaccos and this one is one of my faves..........love the cut and it smokes well....will buy again

A decent smoke
The flavor profile is what you would expect after reading the description. I found it rather plain, but that's not a bad thing. It's a good middle-of-the-day smoke or a palate cleanser

Not what I expected
I know there is cheap cigarette tobacco that is labeled as pipe tobacco, but I didn't realize that was what Three Sails is. Too fine for me to smoke in pipe. Great for roll your own.
2 out of 5
Not for me
Hey! I think I just smoked a bale of Hay! or Straw, or dried lawn grass. This is definitely a roll your own cigarette tobacco. In the pipe it is not so great. Very mild, no backbone, no flavor other than grass. Citrus? That's a reach. Stuck with an "in case of emergency" bag of tobacco. Or I will give it to someone who smokes roll your own cigs.

D&R 3 Sails
I like the aroma and flavor when smoking 3S; however, the cut is too small for a pipe, doesn't pack and is really more for RYO cigs. I get that, but if 3S wants to get more of a wallet share with pipesters they need to make the cut more hefty like ribbon or shag. It's a mellow smoke, doesn't bite, has a low nic hit, and is generally an okay smoke for all day... if you don't mind dealing chaff now and again. I won't buy it again unless D&R change the cut.

Good bang for your buck.
For the price, it's hard to beat. Good, sweet Virginia, that's at home in a pipe or a paper. Nothing fancy, just an easy packing, EASY to keep lit smoke.

D&R three sails
Since I use this for rolling cigarettes, I was very disappointed in the smell, the thin, feathery cut and dryness of this tobacco. I've been using PS Virginia and Turkish and have now kicked myself in the keester for trying a cheaper brand. Not a fan...

The Results Are In: Best All Day Smoke-Daughters & Ryan Three Sails
After weeks of taste testing everyone's favorite tobaccos I found Daughters & Ryan Three Sails to be my favorite all day smoke. I reasoned that the tobaccos on P&C's Top Seller's pages just had to have my favorite too. It took me a couple of months to finally try Three Sails but the more I thought about what tobacco I wanted to smoke out of a big tobacco order, I kept returning to and liking the Three Sails best.

Warm but Smooth
Three Sails is strong for some, but is a smooth slow sipper for me. Just a little too fast and you will get burnt. I mix it with other blends according to my mood. Most often being mixed 50/50 with Five Brothers, Dark Flake Unscented, and Best Brown. Cut is very similar to Five Brothers, a bird nest. I'll probably reorder, but mostly for blending purposes. Pipes and Cigars is a reliable supplier.

Nice and light but satisfying smoke. Great for mornings or to lighten up another blend.

Three Sails = Three Castles
I am not a daily smoker anymore, so when i do want to smoke, i want it to be the way i like it. Three Castles was the cut and flavor for me, but until i found this, i was out of luck. It hasn't been available for quite some time. The Three Sails is the same style of cut, flavor and texture (Virginian?) that came in the bright green pouch. I don't need to keep waiting anymore. This is the same flavor, texture and quality as Three Castles. Maybe better.

Customer Testimonials
This is great RYO tobacco. It's very mild and pleasant on it's own, but also makes the perfect blending component to add "condiments" to. You can add a little bit of basically anything to change up the flavor and still maintain a smooth, well burning smoke. Anyone searching for the perfect RYO smoke should start with this as the base. I like to add a tiny bit of Ryback, Ramback, or Perique.
This tobacco is great! I decided to give it a try and it payed off. This tobacco like another reviewer said is a great night time smoke. I used this to roll come cigarettes and they actually turned out pretty good. They get you a really nice buzz and the aroma is perfect for a nice cool night. Great tobacco!
I like it. it is the closest thing I could find to the original bali shag golden shag which if I am correct, was sold out by peter stokkebye to another company and promptly went to crap. I noticed the quality of thee sails lately has come down a bit since it first came out. for example, it looks like the last batch I got had stems which is not preferred. perhaps someone should mention it to d&r??? overall it is still a top choice, a close 2nd to the original golden shag and so far unmatched other than maybe the danish export from peter stokkebye.
Just got this tobacco in today and I got to say this is a very good night time smoke its on the strong side but very tasty. It has a classic American tobacco taste to is its nutty and semi sweet to me. If your looking for a nutty tasting tobacco this is a good choice or looking for something to bled your other tobacco's with to make stronger this is a good choice.
A great tobacco. I have used it for years and it has never disappointed. Aromatic, full bodied and very smooth. Highly recommended. Jr
