Gawith & Hoggarth Kendal Flake

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s Kendal Flake consists of mostly Virginias with dark-fired Kentucky and rich air-cured leaf for body. The complex mixture of toppings include nut, floral, vanilla and rum notes; to offset the strength of a solid medium-bodied smoke. The flake format allows t you to prepare your tobaccos in a variety of ways, making G&H Kendal Flake a very versatile tobacco.

Kendal Flake
Excellent product. Look great and is composed of very good base tobacco. Folded and stuffed in an old Erlich bent briar. Did not air it out. It took a couple of charring light and a tamp but after that it burned very well. Very cool smoke but I never push a pipe. The taste is had to pin point but it is "floral soapy". The kind of soapy that old time Bond Street smokers loved but this is of vastly superior quality. As it burns down, it retains some of the topping but turns more straight tobacco. I only gave 4 stars because, although I like it very much, I wouldn't smoke all the time. I would try mixing with a heavy Lat blend to see what happens. Burns to fine white ash with no excess moisture. Has a good kick to it with no bite.

Another good flake.
Another good flake from Gawith. A gorgeous think flake on the milder side of med-full There is a fairly strong citrusy / flowery smell to the tobacco itself I've found that most Gawith tobaccos will benefit from a short "drying" period after rubbing them out. Once lit the room will fill with a lot of different notes, from think vanilla--image a warming vanilla bean, to flowers, to a citrus note like a kumquat. This may not be a tobacco for everyone or every day; I would suspect that if you like the Coniston and / or Bosun blends you will also like this flake.

Guess Lakeland tobaccos are not my thing....
I didn't realize I was going to get these with my last order and now I have 4 ozs. of unusable tobacco. 2 oz. of Kendal Flake and 2 oz. of Glengarry. Would return them if I could, but, alas, I'm not sure they'll let you do that. These two tobaccos are literally stomach turning. They're in the garage. Let me know if you like these and they're yours, post paid. As for me, in the future, I'll stay with McClelland and other flakes with which I'm familiar. YUK!

Smoke slow and you get a very fruity flavor. After a few tamps and a good light or two you start to get a vanilla and almost grape fruit taste. Once the casing burns off the tobacco taste is strong but smooth. A good smoke just don't let the smell from the un burnt leaf steer you away as it's very pungent. 3 stars.
