GL Pease Chelsea Morning

GL Pease Chelsea Morning – the name implies that this would be a great blend with which to start the day, and that would be true. Although it contains both Latakia and Perique, the amounts are light enough to allow the Virginias and Orientals to shine. There's an elegant sweetness here that makes Chelsea Morning an especially pleasant early-day tobacco.

Love it. Not to hot.
Love it. Not to hot. Packs well. Not just for morning. I'm a novice, so the subtleties are a little bit beyond me so far, but I do like it, a lot.

Flavorful but a Little Wispy
Just had my first bowl of CM. It's a light English. Same profile as Nightcap but different proportions - like Nightcap light. Very flavorful but a little thin and wispy in the mouth feel. However, if they made it any more substantial, they'd probably have to kick up the latakia and that would disqualify this as a morning blend.

Which is the real Chelsea Morning?
My favorite tobacco so far, and I say that as someone who loves stronger blends and have tried tobaccos like Charing Cross (which is lovely). This blend is just so effortlessly and endlessly enjoyable. I think it also has the benefit of mostly being the first bowl of the day when the palate is clean. One issue of note is that the 8oz tin was noticeably less smoky than the 2oz tin, and I was initially and still am somewhat disappointed by. There was a special tin note of the 2oz offering that I really loved. The tin note of the 8oz offering was more like Haunted Bookshop at first, which is a good tobacco, but nowhere near what I expect from CM. I thought perhaps it was ageing but I was surprised that the 8oz tin was older (a year in the tin already apparently, whereas the 2oz was 6 months). I laid out the 8oz for a little and jarred it. Just snuck some of it, and am happy to say that what it's missing in smokiness it makes up for with an even deeper nuttiness. All this is to say: Which is the real CM? This tobacco is so good I'm willing to figure out this mystery.

This is my favorite duck blind blend. For some reason it tastes even better than it already does when outside in the wild.

Chelsea Morning
Chelsea Morning is my favorite morning blend. The tobacco’s are perfectly balanced. It has a creamy flavor and texture. The cut allows for easy light and continuous smoke evenly through the bowl with billowing smoke. It has such a unique and amazing taste. I do enjoy all of the G. L. Pease Old London Series.

My new favorite daily smoke
This is my favorite daily smoke now. It has a subtle campfire flavor and I have been complemented on the room note quite a lot in the past week that i've started smoking it. To me, this is what pipe smoking is about, awesome flavor, amazing room note, and minimal tongue bite. Before trying this, i was smoking Borkum Riff and Capt Black, but if you like english or unflavored and mild blends, i highly suggest chelsea morning! It easily made my new new every day smoke from being off for about 6 months because of military training

Not Just a Morning Smoke
This is a superb tobacco. At first light it starts off as a VA/Per, grass/hay with a little bit of pepper. Quickly after that the journey begins. Every ingredient comes together in concert, and the tunes change throughout the bowl. At about 1/4 in the smoke takes on a deeper, richer character, and gets deeper/fuller as the bowl progresses. The VA is the foundation with sweet and tart, citrus, but everything is in great balance throughout the smoke. It's not only a great way to start the day, but can be smoked any time. Nothing close to a lat-bomb

Much better when aged for a year.
I've been smoking this blend for one year now, and I just opened an 8oz can dated January 23rd of 2020. I bought three 8oz cans in March of 2020, all with the same date on the bottom of the can. I smoked the first can right away, and it was a delight. It was complex and fairly smooth, but could bite if provoked. I put it in my rotation and it lasted seven months. The second can was designated to be opened when it was a year old, but I've been out of the first can for a while (four months), and I've been Jonesing for a a taste of Chelsea Morning, so I opened the second can twenty-six days before it was one year old. I figured it what the heck, it was close enough, and I opened it. The aroma was a bit more complex than I remembered, and the tobacco was in the Goldie Locks Zone moisture content. I only had to air it out for about ten minutes until it was the perfect dryness for smoking. It is much smoother the the first can was, and much less bitey. In fact I it doesn't bite at all now (yippee). It settles into the zone very quickly, and it's a fine smoke and a testament to the blender. I'm smoking some right now and I'm enjoying it immensely. I plan on opening the third can in another year, and I ordered a couple more 8oz cans to stash away and put some age on them. I had enjoyed the blend when it was young, but I always seemed to get some tongue bite with it. I'm ever so pleased that the bite has gone completely away after letting it sit for a year. I'm able to enjoy it as it was intended to be, bite free.

Morning english that really delivers! Chelsea morning is a very reliable not overly sharp without being boring. Burns slowly and produces plenty of smoke for a pleasant mouth feel. Great with a cup of tea.

Better than EMP
I find this to be the right amount of strength and nicotine in a lighter blend. It does have more Latakia than Early Morning Pipe, but that’s the point. It reaches the sweet spot right from the beginning of the bowl and come right from the tin in a ribbon cut that does not need drying out. Perfect with the morning cup of coffee.

A refreshing break from heavier latakia blends.
This is a very nice smoke, with a great deal of complexity. The initial aroma, after opening the tin, it sweet with a hint of raisins (perique). There is just a hint of latakia, certainly not pronounced, in the aroma. The tobacco feels a bit on the dry side, but turned out to be perfect for smoking. The tobacco looks like a course ribbon, which I did not rub out further. I used a brand new SMS meerschaum churchwarden pipe, with a lattice bent billiard bowl. It loaded nicely into the chamber, and had a good draw, even though I packed it fairly tightly. After the char, the tobacco lit very easily, and stayed burning all the way to the bottom of bowl, with only a single relight. The initial flavor was that of sweet Virginia and orientals. The latakia is a condiment in this blend, enhancing the other flavors, but never making a statement or coming to the front. It can be tasted more and more as the bowl progresses. The perique became evident about halfway into the bowl, with a slight fruity taste and a bit of pepper on the tongue and in the nose. The smoke was dense and creamy. The whole bowl smoked very cool and dry, without a single gurgle. The ash was white and fairly firm and course. I just finished my sixth bowl, in the same new meerschaum pipe, and I'm very impressed with the quality and great taste of this blend. All six bowls were clean and cool, and with zero gurgling or tongue bite. I am a big fan of latakia blends, and usually smoke blends with a higher latakia content, but this one is refreshing, a nice break from the heavier blends. It's a winner in my book, and a testament to fine blending from G. L. Pease. I plan to keep it in stock, and tuck some away for various amounts of time, to see how aging improves the blend. I'm sure time will do marvelous things to it!

Not a substitute for EMP:
I had hopes that this would be a substitute for EMP by Dunhill, alas it is not. This is, however, a very nice smoke. A deep sweetness from the Virginia’s and Perique emerge early to compete against the Eastern leaves, forming a nice balance that changes through the bowl. This is light enough for a morning smoke, though stronger in Nicotine than EMP, but is complex enough to spend time to enjoying it. Not as delicate nor as creamy as EMP, but deeper and more nuanced. I’ll probably keep this one in the rotation.

Best McClellend Oriental #1 and 2010 alternative
It's like a blend of McClellend #1 and 2010 flake in taste. It's a rubbed out flake / thick ribbon cut. Great taste. The tin opens a bit moist - good aroma but put it in the pouch for a day for a good light.

Great tobacco, i love This stuff.

GL Pease Chelsea Morning
I found this tobacco to be a bit disappointing. Neither full-bodied nor nuanced as I had been led to believe, the tobacco also did not smoke as smoothly as I would have wished it to which is surprising given its ingredients. There are better, more interesting blends out there, even though I might have just had a bad day with this one.

Probably me and not the tobacco
I really wanted to like this but it burns my tongue every time. Not tongue burn, bust the perique must not agree with me. It's worth a try if you don't have any issues with perique, which apparently I do.

Not what I expected but....
I'm writing this to sing praises to P&C's customer service more so than the tobacco in question. First let me say that this is another solid blend from Mr. Pease. I can definitely taste all the components coming together for a great smoke. Perhaps a little moist when newly opened, but not overly so. The cut is different from any I've ever tried, and as others have said, more of a chopped flake than a ribbon cut. Rubs out nicely. I had originally ordered a tin of Balkan Saseini, but when the package arrived in the mailbox it contained Chelsea Morning instead. A quick phone call later and I was told that these things happen sometimes, my original order will be shipped ASAP, and in the meantime enjoy this tin on the house. Fantastic customer service all the way! Thanks again guys, you'll be getting more of my business soon.

A superb mild English!
I love medium English blends with a little sweet through the nose. De facto, this blend is a favorite for that reason. Not only does it scratch my itch, but it does it impeccably well. Very smooth and creamy, medium body with a surprisingly complex amount of flavor. Sweet on the retrohale and a solid kick of nicotine. I don't have a single complaint about this blend other than it not coming in bulk...it does however come in 8oz tins which I will be buying 2 of on my next order. I often wonder about a blend that I could choose if I was only allowed one. This is an easy answer to that question for me.

A Winner for Greg Pease
Greg Pease has a winner with Chelsea Morning. In flavor and aroma, it's somewhere between Dunhill's Early Morning and London Mixture, but the cut is broader that a normal ribbon. It's more a loose tumbled flake. It packs easily, burns smoothly with no bite, and leaves a medium gray ash. Recommended.

Chelsea Morning
This masterful blend by GL Pease has quickly become the backbone of my tobacco collection. The strength is noticeable, but not overpowering, making it a perfect English style blend to partake of with my morning coffee. Simply delightful! I can honestly say that if I had to limit myself to only one blend of tobacco for the rest of my life, it would be Chelsea Morning. If you think Dunhill EMP is good, you really need to give this a try.

My favorite English blend
This tobacco is another great example of the skill of G L Pease and in fact is my favorite latakia blend. Incredible nose and great burn down to the bottom. This is one to smoke and savor slowly. Not for type A puffer :) Thank you Mr.Pease!

Mild English blend for morning coffee!
The tin moisture was too wet, and smoking it was too harsh. So I put some in a baggie so it would dry a little faster, and suddenly the blend came alive. It has a very nice high quality Virginia sweetness, but the other tobaccos really give it complexity. It is a very nice morning smoke, especially if you like a mild English blend in the morning. I don't mind the moisture at all, because it takes me a while to get through a tin and they tend to dry out on me. This one will probably sit in my regular rotation for a while.
