GL Pease Stonehenge Flake

GL Pease released a special tobacco in December of 2001 called Stonehenge Flake. It consisted of tobaccos from Brazil, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, including excellent Malawi Burley, to which a dash of St. James Perique was added, then pressed and sliced into flakes. Due to the rarity of the tobaccos, only 1500 tins were made. Those that have remained show that this blend ages spectacularly. Good fortune shone on Greg again, so he's able to bring back one more run of this thing of legends. Get some for now and to stash away, but do it quickly before it goes away forever.

Please Note: This flake was made as a collaboration between Greg Pease and the late John Gawith. The blend includes traditional Lakeland essences, so if you're a fan of those types of blends, you're sure to enjoy Stonehenge Flake.

A great Smoke
Great blend, medium nicotine, not quite an all day smoke. Light lakeland scent transferring to the smoke itself, so if you don’t like it, don’t try it. Myself I love it, smoke every day, any time around noon and later. A thick smoke with plenty of body. Reminds me of St. Bruno flake

Grow on you
It took a couple of bowls to learn the flavor, a raisin or fig liquor, and it dried a bit too; turned out to be a great smoke. Very subtle very pleasant. Will buy again.

Will purchase again
This has a very similar topping to Sam Gawaith's Grousemoor. i don't taste the cocoa flavor referenced in other reviews. i would probably prefer a bit less burley, it has an astringent-like quality; still, i plan on purchasing it again.

I am normally a straight
I am normally a straight Virginia smoker, w occasional forays into English and Balkan blends. This flake.is just amazingly tasty. It is my new go to. There is not a discernable (to my pallet) top note, but the blend comes across as a bit chocolatey. This is an everyday smoker.

Not for me
Described as having Lakeland essence, I thought I'd give it a try. Never had one before. Definitely not in my wheelhouse. If you're into Lakeland, this is probably on the subdued side, but still not what I enjoy. My wife hated the room note as well.

Not a Lakeland
This is a good solid, and high quality vaper flake. As to Lakeland essence--not there. I am getting really tired of blends making reference to Lakeland flavorings, then not delivering at all. I did not need three tins of another also ran virginia flake.

Stonehenge flake
Amazing stuff here. Tin aroma is cocoa, the taste is very close to Enerdale, only softer. You can taste the Virginias, however, the perique is too well hidden for my taste. This one does come wet, but not so much so that you're forced to watch it age just to get a good smoke. I alternate my prep method with flakes, and I find this one likes to be rubbed out. But that's all it took. It's phenomenal in a briar but absolutely shines in a meer. Burns cool. Flavorful down to the bottom of the bowl. I enjoy it any time of the day and would consider it an all day smoke. As usual, P&C is always on time and the service is second to none.

Lakeland
Great smoke, a little damp in the tin, but overall very pleasant. I still have yet to figure out where the Soap taste seems to come from. It has a very floral note, with bits of anise and what I call "botanicals" (it reminds me of walking through the botanical gardens at Garfield Park on a muggy day), but not soap. Either way, one I would recommend.

Absolutely Love It!
Absolutely love this blend. The Virginias are not like the grassy, sweet Virginias we are used to in the US. These are more similar to the African Virginias, more bready, hearty. The Perique is also not of the spicy nature that most are used to. A more fruity, figgy like flavor comes from these. Since this is processed over in G&H, you get some Lakeland style floral essance, which is quite nice. Overall, this is a wonderful blend that bounces around flavors and keeps the pallet busy and occupied.

Not a crowd pleaser, but a great tobacco if you like Lakelands
First, I loved it. Second, this is not a not a crowd pleaser. If you don't like the Lakeland essence, then you ought to stay away. It doesn't matter how sophisticated and experienced you are, it truly is an acquired taste. I don't get soap or perfume. I get Almond, Rose, Lavender, Maple, Cardamon and whatever else my brain might be perceiving based on the mysterious descriptions. Most importantly, I get some great tangy Virginias and some earthy burleys. For me, it's classic, exquisite and somewhat quixotic. If you imagine soap and perfume while you smoke it, then it's about 95% certain that you'll taste that. That's how the brain works. Approach this one opened minded.

A truly great Lakeland flake
Ignore the bad reviews. This is a great Lakeland tobacco. This is advertised as such. You can't fault it for being a Lakeland. If I didn't care for wine or had never even tasted wine, I wouldn't think my review of a fine wine would be very helpful to anyone. This is an earthy, nutty flake with some truly great Virginias. The Perique is just right and the Lakeland essence is not overdone -- just a nice dose of cocoa with subtle floral notes.

If there's a worse tasting tobacco, I haven't found it...
I knew about Lakeland Essences, but I wasn't prepared for a "we're gonna wash your mouth out with soap and then spray cheap perfume in it" experience. Wow! Aghhh!! I enjoy Royal Yatch, HH Vintage Syrian, JackKnife Plug, Gaslight, Nightcap, Viprati, HH Bold Kentucky, Escudo....all part of a wide variety of Vapers, VaBurPers, Straight Virginias, English/Balkans, Dark Fired KYs on my shelf and in my cellar - nothing in my worst imaginings prepared me for how truly unappealing (read awful) a pipe tobacco could be. I'm about to reload the Vauen Churchwarden in which I smoked the GLP Stonehenge Flake with my favorite VaPer - H & H Viprati - in hopes of disinfecting my mouth and pipe, recovering my pipe equilibrium, and wiping out any possible ghosting. Fortunately, it only took 15 minutes to be totally turned off to Stonehenge.

A bit to floral for me, but will try it a few more times in case I'm missing something.

Tastes like a dryer sheet smells...
When I read the description, I knew I had to buy, not one tin, but two, because I just knew I would regret it not doing so...Well, it turns out I actually regret buying any. When I opened the tin took a sniff, I thought I hit a home run. It rubs out easily and packs without much fuss. Nice nicotine kick and slow burning, albeit slow to light. Unfortunetly, the flavor is aweful. I don't know if I received a stale tin or if it's supposed to taste like a dryer sheet, but I want to beleive this isn't a good representation of the blend. Thoroughly disappointed.

Ahhhhh
Bought a couple of tins two weeks ago. Read about it on the PC website. I was intrigued by the process that created this blend. What could it hurt to try it. I've never smoked flake before so this was a new experience for me. Just cut it into strips and loaded up old reliable. Had a few bowls over a couple of days. I realized that I hadn't smoked any other. I was first impressed with the smoothness. Then the flavor hit me. Rich but so mellow. A regular cacauphony of flavors. I got online and ordered five more tins. Not risking back order or worse, off the market again.

Very disappointed
I love GL Pease. Everything I've smoked from this line is amazing. Stonehenge? Not so much. I was warned about lakeland essence. I honestly didn't think it would be so bad. Boy, was I wrong. One if the worst bowls I've ever smoked. Im not entirely confident that I'll be able to finish the tin. Two things I do know...1) I'll never buy another tin of Stonehenge. 2) I don't particularly care for "old lady purse" tasting tobacco. Smoke at your own risk.

Surprise, soapy flavor!
If you enjoy that soapy, perfume or floral taste then this is for you. That unique top note they refer to should read "Lakeland" essence. Reminds me of some famous Sam Gawith blends. This tobacco is blended perfectly to balance great virginias similar to Full Virginia Flake. I enjoyed that part but personally was annoyed at the bar of soap flavor competing. I love the tin art but this blend is not for me. Disappointed.
