Hearth & Home Marquee BlackHouse 10th Anniversary

In 2011, the Seattle and New York Pipe Clubs acquired a large tin of Balkan Sobranie 759 that was around 23 years-old and tried to figure out what to do with it. They decided to send samples to three blenders - Carl McAllister of Sutliff, Mike McNiel of McClelland, and Russ Ouellette of Hearth & Home - and asked them to try to replicate the blend for a contest at the 2011 Chicagoland Pipe and Tobacciana Show. The challenge was modifying the blend to accommodate 23 years of aging. When the contest, called the Balkan Sobranie 759 Throwdown, was completed, Russ' entry, now known as Hearth & Home Marquee BlackHouse, was the winner.

To celebrate a decade of this now classic blend, Russ wanted to do something special. When he learned about a small cache of well-aged Orientals the answer was simple - substitute the Orientals from the original with this vintage leaf. Because the amount of the aged orientals is very limited, he had to do this as a limited edition blend called Hearth & Home BlackHouse 10th Anniversary. This is a one-time run, so if you're a fan of BlackHouse or just love rich, robust Balkan-style blends, you'll want to pick some up before they sell out, and we're predicting that will happen pretty quickly.

Great smoke and I'm looking
Great smoke and I'm looking forward to more of this product. I was hoping it would be slightly more substantial than it was. It was a lighter almost floaty mouth feel and took multiple bowls to get me going. I felt it could use a little more bit or zing in the retrohail, but the overall smell was wonderful and I'm glad I made this purchase.

Could also be called Smoke House
I absolutely love this blend!! Definitely an everyday and could be called Bacon House, love the smell unsmoked and the wonderful flavor while smoking! It’s an amazing blend!!

I'm a big fan of
I'm a big fan of Balkan-style blends. The tobacco is ribbon cut, not dry, just the right amount of moisture. Slow burn.. It does leave a strong room note, but I enjoy the smell and the flavor.

Excellent Tobacco Blend
This stuff is excellent. Smooth, smoky and aromatic. I was really surprised by it. I usually smoke War Horse but will definitely order more tins of Black House.

Black House is one of
Black House is one of my favorite blends. I enjoyed this special edition. But I need more time to get to know this blend. The additional orientals do come through strongly right away. Not sure what else to compare it to other than regular Black House, which to me is a better balanced blend. If you can still grab a tin you should.

New to the style
Don't smoke many blends like this,as I smoke aromatics. But I have to say this stuff is making me want to try more of this style! The smokiness is a nice change. This is gonna be really good with some age!

Great smoke!!
I just started pipe smoking again. So I purchase tins I'm familiar with. I was introduced to original Blackhouse a few months ago as a birthday gift. I loved it. When 10th anniversary came I had to grab at least 2 tins. Blackhouse is a great smoke but 10th anniversary to me feels smoother to me. Great smoke. As of right now this is in my top 5.

Nice
I am only an occasional smoker so don’t have much experience upon which to go. That said, upon opening the can I found the aroma of the fresh tobacco to be very nice with a smoky scent. In the past I have had the most pleasant experiences from aromatic tobaccos, think Norman Rockwell blends, but found this to be quite appealing. It wasn’t harsh, smoked well, and left a pleasant taste in my mouth as that of a visitor as opposed to a permanent resident. I could easily have given this five stars but having such a limited exposure to tobaccos I thought it was a good place to start.

10th Anniversary is a more complex, savory, and smoky BlackHouse.
Compared to the standard BlackHouse, The 10th anniversary is more smoky, savory, rich, and deep, with strong notes of leather. The new orientals change the profile of BlackHouse enough to make it quite distinct from the mellow standard version. Overall, the 10th anniversary is more complex and interesting. It comes across as mix of Gaslight, Maltese Falcon, Presbyterian, and White Knight. I've been searching for a tobacco with with this profile for a long time.

Beautifully rich and complex
I've never had the original BlackHouse to compare the anniversary edition with but this is top notch regardless. Smokey and creamy with superb orientals shining throughout the smoke. 5 stars all the way!
