Hearth & Home Marquee El Nino

Hearth & Home Marquee Series El Nino was created to be our featured blend at the 2013 West Coast Pipe Show. El Nino is a hard tobacco to classify. The base is a ripe, matured red Virginia, enriched by a good helping of Acadian Perique and some dark-fired Kentucky. To make the blend rounder and to add touch of mellow sweetness, some unsweetened black Cavendish is included. The final touch is the faintest touch of Latakia to deepen the flavor. El Nino produces large volumes of creamy smoke, and it's fairly robust, so it's the perfect repast to follow up a nice meal.El Nino is kicking in, and it's going to be a fun ride.

No Latakia In This Blend
There is no latakia in this blend. The oriental( Smyrna I would guess) is what people are picking up. That combined with the dark fired gives a very close semblance to latakia. That being said, this stuff is tremendously good.

Thought it was a decent
Thought it was a decent smoke but just not the strong, complicated blend the description led me to believe. Only time I can remember the tin aroma setting off my hay fever.

Worth a try !
This mixture is hard to classify . It certainly not an aromatic and not quite an English blend neither. All I know is ,its a great tobacco mixture to smoke. I just purchased three more tins and its in my rotation of favorite tobacco blends to smoke.

Dairy barn.
Great tasting smoke. I finished the whole tin and liked it. But the smell of first opening the can.... dairy barn. Yes, it smells like a dairy barn.

Worth th wait
I had this stuff around for a year before finally deciding I REALLY like it! It took awhile 2 figure out!! Quite a bit goin on...fermented Virginia sweetness and th Perique are yummy and th edges are rounded out nicely with th cavendish and it's amazing what a very condimental dose of Latikia can do. If it doesn't speak 2 you rite away take a little time and perhaps it'll come 2 you like it did 2 me. It was worth th time

I guess I love it...
I started this review at 3 to 4 stars, but after Writing the below, I realized it’s honestly a 5’er. I prefer English blends, but found myself reaching for this recently. It’s really good (flavor wise) and was meant to be a “nice break from the normal routine”, but ended up being in the routine. Some days I have to make my self get something else for fear I’ll run out. I cellar quite a bit, but can’t seem to leave this stuff alone. I wish I could get it by the pound (or the recipe)! I love the sweet pepper of the Va/per and the hickory flavor of the DFK, all blended with a touch of that smokey lat & creamy cav... it seems to hit all my tastebuds... for me it’s med-full body and full flavor with a modest nic kick.

Frog on Steroids
Think Frog Morton on the Bayou - on steroids. Very flavorful and well-balanced, with the Kentucky adding an extra flavor dimension. This is my new favorite blend.

A 3 that wants to be a 5
It was very hard to give a review as low as a 3. There is nothing technically wrong with this blend. Of the 11 I have in my staple rotation it is on the bottom, but it is still in my rotation. I just give it a 3 because there are few times when I'm in the mood for something full-bodied where I don't automatically reach for Nightcap. But there are times when I want something with punch that's a little smoother, and this blend satisfies those times. It has less of a campfire note than most full-bodied blends I've tried and more of an almost hickory note. It's always cool and I rarely have to relight it. It burns to a fine ash easily. The Marquee Series is definitely worth checking out, though. Two of my favorites, White Knight and Black House, are in this line. I was thrilled by the recent buy 3 deal.

One good blend
I smoke El Nino at least once everyday. Started a pipe in a car and was asked to stop. I assume the room note is not for everyone. Love the tin note. Russ O. did it again.

For a Change-up or All Day
Having gotten away from heavy Latakia blends for over a year, I have lately been enjoying Presbyterian Match and some other blends with that leaf used as a condiment. El Niño is a Virginia forward blend with the smoky, leathery Latakia truly used as a condiment. Earthy-sweet Virginias are also supported by smoky, spicy Kentucky and a small amount of Perique, which adds a hint of pepper. All the varietals are in perfect proportion for a full-bodied, medium to full-flavored smoke, excellent for those first approaching Latakia or for those enamored of the smoky leaf wanting a break from heavy English blends. This is very well behaved in the bowl, from packing and lighting to ash. As with any Virginia-laden blend, a slow pace is rewarded, though there's no bite, even with distracted, heavy puffing.

Another hit for the Marquee series
Very nice blend. Kind of a VaPer with a bit of smokey latakia and jacked up with dark fired for some extra vitamin N. Good stuff Maynard.

H&H El Nino Great Blend
I really love a good meaty blend. This is just a great blend. Nice and smoky, but not too smoky. It's a nice balance. Love it. Would definitely buy again!

unique
I recieved this as part of a dark fired step ladder, this being on the lowest end of that ladder. haven't tried the other two yet (stanwell jubilee and orlik strong dark Kentucky.) while new-ish, i have experienced dark fired in the form of S&G black Irish twist, which was... powerful. This floated just outside of any style, for me at least. its not quite English as i cant pick up the latakia. my tin description made no such mention of latakia. its not aromatic because, well it isnt perfumed... its earthy, a little spicy, and almost bbq saucy. and there is a hint of dark fired which was neat, but there was also sweetness, probably from the cavendish and virginias. it was very interesting. i got a little tired of it through the tin, but funny enough a enjoyed the last few bowls more and more, then found myself sad when i ran out. i wouldn't stop anyone from trying it. i thought it unique and tasty.
Customer Testimonials
What a great smoke! The tin greets you with a burst of warm tobacco and a soft burst of leather from the Latakia. First light REALLY brings out the Lat but as you settle into the smoke it fades into a great background note with enough appearances to remind you it's there but without being annoying. The bowl becomes warm and buttery with a few sweet notes; think of how toffee, almonds, and molasses would taste without copious amounts of sugar... Yes sir, it's that smooth. For you cigar fans this is a great treat with a similar smoke to a medium maduro, lots of cream and a bit of light spice. This is one of the few pipe tobaccos that puts out as much smoke as a cigar! There's a fair amount of N to this blend too so save it for a quiet evening on the porch and you'll be well rewarded.
