Hearth & Home Signature Classic Burley Kake

Hearth & Home Signature Classic Burley Kake is a blend that pays homage to old-time Burley flakes and cakes. Using Tennessee and Kentucky Burleys, ranging from lighter white to darker mahogany, and a bit of matured red Virginia, this sliced cake tobacco is a traditional American-style blend. We start with four different types of Burley, the aforementioned Tennessee and Kentucky, plus two different premium white Burleys. Then we add a red Virginia for a maple-like sweetness. The addition of cocoa, rum and a hint of anise completes the comforting flavor and room note. The aroma is mellow and pleasant, and the taste is lightly sweet with a large volume of smoke. Hearken back to a simpler time when the sight of a pipe in someone’s mouth while walking down the street was common, and the scent of pipe tobacco was everywhere. Give Classic Burley Kake a try and go back in time.

This is a great all-day
This is a great all-day burley blend... Easy to rub out and pack, I have found that packing very light works great with this blend. Tin note smells like a cereal to me in a very good way. Once you rub it out the texture is soft and light. The moisture from the bag is good, but I usually dry it for a little while before smoking. This is the first tobacco I smoked all the way down until it was just gone, and it often doesn't even require a re-light. I love the sweet honey/molasses/choco that comes through, but you can still taste a nice easy tobacco flavor. To me this is medium in strength of flavor or even just a tad lighter, which makes it great for all day smoking. The overall flavor is not complex, just a very nice sweet taste in the mouth. This has become one of my favorites quite quickly, and I smoke it often.

This is a nice all
This is a nice all day American type smoke, I’ve been looking for something to replace my hard find OTC tobaccos like carter hall. This may very well be my new replacement, curios about how it will age considering ordering a couple pounds to cellar.

Instantly hit by the sweet
Instantly hit by the sweet coco sent and the smoke is beautiful and smooth. The room smells like chocolate when i smoke this one and the smoke is very coco heavy with that stand allne burley backing that we all love. Definitely going to reorder this one in the future, i ordered the battle of the blends sweet and this one definitely took the cake over the anniversary blend.

Good blend for burley lovers
Good blend for burley lovers except it can use a little perique for the pepper flavor.too mild.

Great burley blend. It is
Great burley blend. It is a little temperamental and requires a light pack to keep keep it happy. I'll definitely order it again.

Perfect daily smoke, just enough
Perfect daily smoke, just enough sweetness with a natural baccy taste no bite mild mannered touch of cocoa hint of anise. Made the rounds aro eng Balkan VA over the years, settled on this and couple other similar types from P&C

Crumble kake
First of all I didn't get any cake, just a bag of crumbs. I must have gotten the end of the bag because there wasn't a solid chunk in the order. But the more important item is, how's the tobacco? The bag aroma is lovely bit of chocolate. Don't really get any anise, but that's ok. It's moist and soft, careful not to pack too tight. Lights well and burns well. First puff was sweet, then settled into a soft cocoa taste that is very delicate. I like it, a lot. I would have liked to have gotten some kake, but maybe next time.

A welcome break.
I'm using this tobacco to break-in my new Stanwell Army Mount pipe, and it's doing a great job of it. I ordered a pound of Burley Kake, and it arrived today. I could smell chocolate through the unopened package! I had some other bulk tobacco in this shipment, but cocao was the prevelant aroma wafting up from the box. The kake's were a beautiful chocolate color, and properly moist. They went straight into 3 one pint, and 1 half pint mason jars. I rubbed a bowl full into small chunks, and filled up the new pipe, lit up and relaxed. The strong cocao aroma of the raw tobacco, doesn't flavor the smoke as much as I thought it would, mostly just at first. It then seems to marry with the other toppings, to make a very nice, moderately sweet flavor. It is slightly reminiscent of Carter Hall, but better. It's easy on the tongue and mouth, burns cool, and lasts a long time. I normally smoke English/Balkan and VaPer blends, but I needed something radically different to fill out my rotation. I get a little burned out of the the same few types of tobacco over and over, and this will definitely fill in as a needed break from my regulars.

Fantastic, my daily smoke!

Classic burley cake
Nice but needed some drying time before smoking imo

Excellent Burley
I mostly smoke vaper or balkan blends but appreciate a good burley to break things up a bit. This one is excellent. It reminds me of a higher quality carter hall on steroids. The kake is pressed tightly but rubs out, packs, and lights with ease. Burlwy Kake is best served in a cob.

Good Stuff
This is a pretty good smoke. Taste wise, It's heavy on the cocoa with just a hint of rum. The smoke smells fantastic, and is currently the best smelling tobacco in my (admittedly small) collection. I would definitely recommend it.

Great burly!
I have only tried burly cake so far and it’s very good. Smooth, light with N,sweet carmel or coco, nutty but full and satisfying until bowl goes empty. I have had a few bowls in a cob, meerschaum and briar and while different still very good.

Serious pipesters take heed...
Just right bite, rich smoke, mild aroma, easy to light and keep bad habits. Popped the bag open and loaded my MM General, lit up and knew immediately that it was going to be a good bowl full. Still puffing away and recalling the kake/plug that I started with and how little effort was needed to get it into loading shape. Seemed moist but doesn’t smoke that way. Moisture level seems just right. A real honest Burley blend that all my aged pipes will surely love. They’d better, as they’ll see plenty of it. I think it’s a winner, if you like a good Burley blend, I’ll bet you will too...need to stop now and load another bowl.

A great Burly blend for daily smoking
Smooth and creamy burly. You can really taste the best of American mellow pipe tobacco in this cake tobacco. It burns nice and slow and is berry moist in the pouch or container. It maintains some very slight notes from the Virginia tobacco in the blend and is an overall good smoke.

Has a great flavor profile but is a bit of a lighter smoke than what I like.

It was just ok
I am a Burley smoker. I love OTC Burley blends. I found this to smell great, smokes well but really had no flavor to it. It was rather bland. I didn't get any of the flavors listed from the description. Just a cool smoking, easy going, very mild Burley.

Finally back in stock and back in my pipe. If you haven't tried it you don't know what you are missing. Kudos to this one.

Great Burley
This has become my #1 go to tobacco. A fantastic 'Old Time' can't go wrong with this blend!!

Very nice smoke , this was my first pipe tobacco and I must say it was very impressive.

Well made Kake!
I am a steady puffer so I get a slight bite. Otherwise it has good tobacco flavor missing from many light aromatics. Just the right amount of sweetness and nice, light room note, easy to stay lit if packed correctly. I cut and break the Cake into the pieces I like for loading my pipe, and jar the rest. Greatly appreciate the quality even more when I want more tobacco flavor than some of the black Cavendish and old OTC tobaccos I tend to favor.

Truly a Classic
Burleys of white. Virginias of red. Upon first light. Smoke swirls my head. Sweet flavor just right. Nothing to dread. No gurgle nor bite. Just pure goodness instead.

A good smoke for those who like a little stronger tobacco. I wasn't overwhelmed with the flavor but I would purchase this again.

The balm of old age
A pipeful of Burley conjures up and enhances pleasurable memories. Every puff melds the past and present into a fugue of comfort and joy.

A favorite!
As a codger burley lover, this blend really drew my attention. I'm half way through the tin now and can say that I really do enjoy the blend. I would compare this to an upscale Prince Albert in taste, with more of a sweetness to it that does not get bitter at the end of the bowl. Tried it in many different pipes, but like a true codger burley it does best in a cob. Does not like to be packed tight. A loose pack and careful tamping will get you through the bowl with a couple lights.

Wow! After reading so many positive reviews, I purchased two ounces of this blend. Now I find, I need to buy a whole lot more. First bowl I smoked was in an Erik Nording Freehand. This stuff smokes like it smells inside the bag. Note to heavy puffers. Smoke this gently, baby puffs, and the flavors are wonderful. I didn't taste the rum, but the cocoa and anise were there, with the cocoa being the predominant taste. Well done Russ. If you're a Burley lover, I think you'll definitely like this one.

Classic Pipe Aroma
This kake is good but comes with a little tongue bite. The room note has that classic pipe aroma..I mix a little Prince Albert with it to cut down the bite.

Best aromatic I've ever smoked!
this is a rare commodity, an aro that tastes like it smells, which is of chocolate and anise. I've found it smokes best in a cob and pretty dry. Just break off a chunk and stuff it in the pipe and you are good to go. Great in the warmer months when Latakia can be a bit too heavy

"Classic" is the perfect name
My first bowl was smoked with one match - how awesome is that! No bite for this heavy puffer, and the aroma is straight out of a novel. When you think of a "room full of tobacco smoke" this is it. I've been smoking less than a year but this may be a "never run out of" tobacco. This is on my re-buy list.

Great Burley Blend.
I really enjoy this tobacco. It is my main everyday smoke. Many times while I'm smoking other blends I wish I was smoking a bowl of CBK. It is a mild and relaxing smoke of good quality, mahogany color tobaccos pressed into chunky pieces of a light aromatic blend of Burleys with a little Virginia added. The blend has a light cocoa and rum flavor that is slightly sweet and earthy that compliments the natural nutty flavor of the Burleys. Nice room note that my wife likes. Smokes and taste great in either in a cob, meer or briar. I've smoked a pipe for 40 years and CBK is the best Burley blend I've smoked. IMHO CBK is a more mellow, more flavorful smoke than Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic and H&H Chatham Manor. Russ did a great job with this blend. I always have CBK in my rotation. I love the stuff.

Nice in a Cob
Classic Burley Cake is really great smoked in a cob, smokes well with little to no tongue bite depending on your smoking style, is one of those tobaccos that will take you back in time like your grandpa used to smoke, mellow flavor an room note, have always got a nice chunk to smoke, buy mine in bulk an have no complaints its just a nice mellow basic burley smoke......J.P., West Frankfort, ILL.

Wonderful in your Cob
Long time smoker but a "noob" to corn cob pipes. Recently, wanted to give a cob a try and starting researching. To my amazement, there is a lot of info out there and the deeper i got, I couldn't believe why I never ventured this way before. Well I ordered a couple MM Great Danes and some of this tobacco. What an enjoyment, even with breaking in the pipes, rotating to let them rest. As the adventure went on, and the pipes breaking in, it just keeps getting better. I would recommend you rub it up to loosen and give it a couple minutes to let dry since mines felt moist in the kake. Enjoy.

Excellent Smoke
Really impressed with this tobacco. Five stars is perfect, which leaves no room for improvement, but this is really close in my opinion. No bite (unless you really abuse it), excellent room note and taste, and a full bowl with one relight. Packs great, came with perfect moisture, and crumbles easily. Smells incredible! To me, it looks AND smells like a brownie. I hope this is around as long as I am.

Classic Burley Kake = Great!
I love this blend I did not get any tongue bite at all and great flavor of the tobacco all the way thru the bowl. The room note is Phenominal!

Returning to pipes and loving this.
Having just returned to a pipe after years of cigarettes, i can't say I am the best judge of pipe tobaccos. What I can say is that the 2oz I bought of this were INCREDIBLE. Very light tongue bite, room note was LOVED by my wife, and nicotine was good for a cig smoker. I will be buying more. For a "noob" this is a good starter. Let it air out overnight to get the moisture down a tad and you will really enjoy this.

Good quality
As one of my first experiences with burley, this seems like a good tobacco. It was easy to smoke without overheating and I thought it tasted better than Carter Hall.

H&H Classic burley cake
Absolutely wonderful stuff. Typically not an aromatic smoker, but this one is superb. Good nicotine content, and pleasant for anyone else who is around . My hat is off to Russ for this blend and many others
Customer Testimonials
I have found this to be a simply satisfying smoke smoke for all of my occasions. Out of the can this crumble cake has the pungency of cocoa and licorice. It seems to favor a light tamping and is not picky about the type of pipe I enjoy it in. It lights easily and then stays light. It smokes cooly and smoothly, tasting much the way it smells out of the can---sweetly. It has yet to bite, though I do let it dry a bit before before I light it up. It burns down to a clean white ash. I also find that it blends well. I find it quite smoker friendly and I recommend it frequently. It is a simple yet elegant pleasure that my grandfather, a big burley fan would have liked as well.
JM of Los Angeles, CA
This is the most forgiving tobacco I have ever smoked. It comes as a cake that needs to be broken up and then dried out until it feels almost too dry, then it will smoke perfectly with no bite. This is my every day tobacco being the replacement for Edgeworth RR. This is not Edgeworth by the way, this is something much, much better. The flavors waltz harmoniously with the natural flavors of the burley and leave a room note of nuts, baked bread, vague cocoa. I prefer it in my kaywoodie pipes, which just seem to be designed for burleys.
LT of Jacksonville, FL
An all around great tobacco and a great burley blend for beginners. Extremely easy to light, pack, and smoke without a hint of tongue bite.
MW of Mound City, KS
I've been looking for a quality blend for the warmer months as I am a lover of English tobacco but not when it's hot. This is a good one! Nice lightly sweet nutty flavor, no bite, and a great room note. Another winner in Russ's stable of fine blends.
TK of fairfield, OH
Being a lover of perique, this was an outstanding pick as a flavor to try, thanks guys, a wonderful smoke that gets better as you go down the bowl.
MK of San Antonio, TX
Being a huge fan of Virginia flake, I didn't think I would enjoy a burley based smoke this much! It is truly a great blend. Not too sweet but very well balanced. I find myself reaching for this more and more. I never had any of the old Classic Edgeworth flake but if it was anything like Classic burley kake it must have been terrific!
DR of Naples, FL
This might be my new favorite. Tastes exactly as it is described on the tin. I'm going to order a whole ton of this stuff!
MK of Schaumburg, IL
A true Burley delight, best if you get to cut your own slices so get the 8oz can with its big chunks. Unlike the other reviews I found it will bite you good if it's not dried to room moisture. The fragrance is unique and very compelling, the kind of smell that reminds you why you smoke a pipe. The flavor does not quite match the fragrance, instead being one of slightly sweet Burley tobacco. If you enjoy a medium strength tobacco forward flavor, this will not leave you dissatisfied unless you did one of two things, first, smoking it too fast and sizzling your toungue and second not buying enough because it goes fast bowl after bowl chasing the great Burley delight it is. Buy a pound and brew up your favorite coffee and relax as the smoke takes you away in an escape from stress and worry.
CT of Antioch, IL
I became a Burley smoker recently. Been smoking Sir Walter Raleigh regular, Velvet, Prince Albert, etc. Those are good, but this one is great! Great tin note! Crumbles and packs easily. Great flavor and it's smooth. If you are a Burley smoker, what are you waiting for? Try this one! Great job Russ!!!
BW of Pomona, CA
Oh this is good ! If your a burley lover or you like the old codger blends of years ago, You are going to love this ! It is reminiscent of old Edgeworth Slices from back in the 50s and 60s but not dead on, it has its own quality going here. A nice mellow, soft burley smoke that's lightly cased and has a cocoa room note . In taste its more complex with the rum, anise, and flavor of nuts and wheat and barley. A good blend for those who don't like real sweet aromatics or latakia bomb Englishes. This is a good one Russ, don't ever get rid of this one ! Very cool and rich smoke !
TS of Folsom, PA
H&H Burley Kake is a nice smooth smoke. Right out of the tin I fell in love with the light crumble kake texture. Full volume of smoke but not overpowering. Its almost a little on the lighter side of taste complexity. You can definitely taste the sweetness of the Virginia with a soft undertone of rum. If you are looking for something with a ton of flavor, this is not your smoke. If you are looking for a cool, simple, smooth no tongue bite everyday smoke, give this one a try.
CB of Waco, TX
When I first opened a tin of HH Classic Burley Kake, I loved the aroma. It is a true sliced cake burley, nice crumble cake when filling my pipe. Love the texture, easy to light and cool, and a no-bite smoke. This is, in a way, a simple blend, but the components work together to produce one simply wonderful product. There is some bold burley flavor that is balanced with the mellow sweet tang mature Virginias. There are hints of chocolate, rum, and licorice, but they do not strike my pallet as being heavily cased. It has a nice gentle room note. This is, to my taste, a smooth tobacco flavor that is also earthy, nutty, and sweet. At times, it reminds me of maple and nuts. It burns well to the bottom of the bowl, with no wet heel, and leaves essentially no tongue bite. Like many of the Hearth and Home blends, is quite affordable and available in bulk, but I think it is best, and less disintegrated in the Classic 8 oz. tin. I prefer to "crumble my own." Classic Burley Kake is just about perfect for me as an easy, all day smoke.
MG of Leawood, KS
Best Burley Blend ive smoked, if you like OTC blends like SWRA you will LOVE this . On a side note if been looking for a VAPER blend with Burley but none rang my bell. Well i got some blending Perique and added to Burley Cake .....DING my bell has been rung! This will be my new VAPER just got to add my own Perique .

Hearth & Home Signature Classic Burley Kake is just fantastic. True tobacco flavor but with a natural sweetness just in the background during the smoke. This is a very flavorful blend and I found it totally relaxing. Easy to pack... easy to light.... no bite and a great room note. What more could you ask for. This will be in my daily rotation. Yet another fantastic blend by Russ O., and Hearth & Home.
