The return of a classic!
John Cotton's No. 1 is a light and refreshing English blend made of matured and bright Virginias, select, small-leaf Orientals and Latakia. It's ideal in the morning or as an all-day type of blend. The subtle interplay of the Orientals and Latakia are supported by the mellow sweetness of the Virginias
The blend has been reconstructed through research and sampling of vintage tins, which triggered blender Russ Ouellette's memories of having smoked the blend in the seventies. For a taste of a traditional, light Latakia blend with a great history, give John Cotton's No. 1 a try.

John Cotton's #1
This is a nice alternative to heavier latakia blends. At first, I thought it was too light (I usually like a fairly strong Balkan), but then had some nice smokes with it later in the day. A "softer" blend, but complex enough to be interesting.

First time
Pretty good IMO for the first time trying it. I like the mild sweetness I got from the tobaccos. A little tongue burn, but that's on my cadence. Ended up buying another tin, but also bought the Smyrna to try out as well.

Excellent light latakia mixture
Virginias and orientals are nearly equal in strength while the latakia is less prominent but always present. The viginias have a slightly sour fruity flavor while the orientals add a musty incense-like taste. The cyprian latakia is mild in strength but always noticeable, a woody and slightly smoky condiment. Really a first-rate light latakia mixture

Great Tobacco
I tried this brand after watching a video on the web site by Russ and was intrigued about how this tobacco would taste. It has a nice spicy taste which is not overwhelming or too strong. This is now a part of my rotation and I am enjoying it!

I didn't know enough to appreciate it until setting the aros aside.
Initially I wasn't impressed when I first smoked this tobacco until I realized I hadn't smoked enough pipe tobacco to truly enjoy it! I started off with mostly aromatics and once my palette became accustomed to English style tobacco which is much more nuanced, I fell head-over-heels on the quality of JC's #1. It had a subtle flavour and quintessential aroma especially with a retro exhale. It's an all day smoke for me that pairs great with a finger or two of bourbon, spicy rum, or hot english tea. Highly recommended.

Cotton's no. 1 - better than EMP?
Great blend. I've been looking for a replacement for early morning pipe and this is it (probably even better than emp if that's possible). The perfect first pipe of the day, light yet complex enough to hold my attention to the bottom of the bowl. Smokes clean with a fine ash. Easy to pack.

Will probably order more.
Received a tin of this in a sampler and will be trying it in a week. Really looks good to me and if it is as good as the reviews I wish it could be purchased in 8 oz cans.

"Oh, sweet mystery of pipes at last I've found yooooouuuu..."
An instant favorite! A mild-to-medium melange of my favorite stuff! It bridges the gap between a bright, sweet Virginia flake and a Latakia-rich English blend. I no longer need to alternate between Dunhill Flake and Comoy's Cask No 11, because this complex and flavorful mix reaches into both experiences and adds a touch of its own color with zesty Orientals. On my first bowl I wondered where this blend had been all my life! My desert island choice for sure! If it comes out in bulk I am ordering two lbs for the cellar - and I am NOT kidding.

Very nice tobacco
I love this tobacco, however I did receive it kinda on the dry side. What I did was buy a cheap spray bottle fill it with distilled water sprayed it a few times mixed it and stored it in a mason jar. I find myself always smoking two bowls back to back of it, I find it mild, smokey, and some what of a "flower like" note. I love it and people around me do to.

A Perfect All Day English Blend!
After smoking all three of the newly re-issued John Cotton's Blends I can report that these are all very well made, balanced, cool smoking English tobaccos that epitomize what you'd expect from the category. Each one would make an excellent choice if you had to pick the last and only English tobacco you'd take on a shipwrecked island. #1 is considered the mildest of the three, but still has plenty of flavor, body and complexity, while the other two have slightly different flavor profiles, with slightly more body. It's hard for me to pick which of them I prefer. Some days I'll reach for the Smyrna, others I want the #1. I mostly enjoy all three blends and count my blessings. Highly recommended for the English lover who doesn't need to be challenged by their tobaccos to relax and enjoy a bowl.

Pleased with mild yet distinctive taste and flavor. Even the ladies like this aroma.

Great Blend!
Not a fan of English blends, but when I had this it left me wanting to work my way through a tin. It has a fairly complex flavor profile for a mild blend. For me it's a perfect leaf balance. I could see this being a go to English blend for many. If you're thinking of trying English blends pick up a tin of this, you won't be disappointed.

Not Mild, Wild
All three of the new Cotton blends are great, but No.1 is, without a doubt, my favorite, a truly complex mix. The Latakia is held at condiment levels, which allows the Virginia and Oriental to shine. The Virginias are sweet and tangy, the Orientals are both sour and floral, providing a good counterpoint to the Virginias. The Latakia provides a light smoke and leatheriness in the background, without any of the sooty acrid notes that sometimes arise with heavy Latakia. It all comes together into a sublime mix of sweet, woody, sour and floral. This is a great representative of my favorite type of blend, the misnamed "mild." If you like McConnell Oriental or Presbyterian, you are going to love Cotton No. 1.

A good light oriental blend.
This is a very good light, virginia forward blend with a touch of latakia. It is a little too spicy for my taste, but excellent none the less. The virginia and orientals play off each other with the latakia hardly noticable. My preference is for the 1&2 which is a little fuller and perfectlybalanced.
