BS-005 is the richest Latakia blend that Lane Limited ever made. It was taken off the market a number of years ago, but through the efforts of Leonard Wortzel, it's back! Lane Limited has never made a tobacco with this much Latakia in it, so if you want a full-bodied, cool-smoking Latakia blend at a very reasonable price, BS-005 is it!
I have tried several Latikia blends claiming to reproduce the flavor and richness of the old Balkan Sobranie. So far the Lane BS-005 is the best at reproducing the old blend.

i love this stuff. if you like Latakia you will like this. i would give it 5 stars but the bag i got was almost a powder. i wish p&c would give a warning when you buy that there scraping your order off the bottom of the barrel.

Its like a campfire in my pipe. Its not my usual black Cavendish. It hits very smooth with no bite and smoke as blue as summer sky. would recommend and have shared with friends and family. worth a try

The best balanced Latakia Blend I’ve tried. The Latakia is there but not overwhelming. The Orientals are there but only noticeable early on. The Virginia is like a supporting crew. Altogether, they make for an enjoyable smoke...bottom of the bowl, nothing but ash in a favorite fifty year old bent briar. I’ve tried the Latakia blends and mixes from many producers and this one really comes across as an easy to like, enjoyable smoke. The tin packaging is a pleasure to load a bowl from and helps keep this one at reasonable moisture levels. It was delivered a bit on the dry side but ever trusting of the blenders, I smoked it dry...then added some moisture to improve burning and depth of flavor. I’ll keep a tin on hand for when my Dunhills are too strong and Balkan Sobranie/Sasieni/White Knight are too Latakia intensive. To its credit, the Lane BS-005 fits comfortably into the “just right” niche. Might be the best possible intro to Latakia blends and a good anytime smoke. Wife finds the aroma pleasant, even in a closed car. After breakfast and before bedtime, it’s a nice break.

First bowl of the day...cool spring morning, front porch, mountains in the distance...really fine, quiet and lonely environment to try this blend. Not surprised that it is a wonderful, cool, dry smoke that is loaded with Latakia flavor. Packs and lights easily and in one hour, through a favorite big English billiard, burned clean and dry to the bottom of the bowl. To date, this is the best Latakia Blend I’ve ever smoked. Seemed a bit dry in the tin but didn’t act that way when lit and smoking. This looks to be one of those that I’ll have on hand and enjoy as often as I have the time. It’s a winner with plenty of Latakia flavor and a subtle sweetness that endure for the entire smoke. I wondered if the name, BS-005, indicated the 5th try at replicating everyones old favorite Balkan Sobranie. If I leaf back through my memories of 40 plus years ago, it seems like this is what I recall...one way or another, really excellent blend.

ive been a devoted Lane smoker for over fifty years and I found the BS-005 to be good as a Virginia base goes, however my first love is Burley. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the Virginia base tobacco.

I may have more different kinds of tobacco than most stores. I really like variety. This is the very best that I have tried.
I have learned something else that has made pipe smoking far more enjoyable.
For years I read that you should put a small amount in the bowl and pack it down. Then add and pack again. What I recently learned, is that the packing should be gentle all the way. If the pipe draws hard before it is lit, you have packed it too hard...

I purchased 5oz of Lane BS-005 based on the first part of the first sentence within P&C's description of the tobacco, "This is the richest Latakia blend that Lane ever made..". Boy they weren't kidding! Lane BS-005 = LAT-BOMB! The tobacco was a tad bit dry but still smokeable. The mixture of Oriental, Virginia and Latakia is just right in my opinion. I will be reordering in bulk many more times to come.

I've been smoking Lane BS-005 for over thirty years (except for the brief hiatus effected by Reynolds when it bought out Lane). Russ Oullette came up with a blend that was close, but we know where that is going thanks to Gummint Leprechauns (that's Leprechaun in the true sense: meaning "gremlin" or "demon").

An "English" tobacco par excellence. It is reasonably priced. The only competition for quality is Benjamin Hartwell Chesdin Mixture (put out by Aldis distributor), but the price per tin (no bulk offered) is horrendous beyond all reason — unbelievable!

I prefer lane hgl to this as it is a little less latakia. If it is blended with some 1q i like it just fine. I have been looking for a cheaper substitute for Frog Morton... I am still looking!

I was introduced to BS-005 in the tin. It was the first time Lane was offering their venerable English bulk blend (that I had ignored for years) in tins, so I figured I'd give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised that BS-005 is a really great, basic, all day English. It's not remarkable or unique and new. But it's just a no-nonsense, relatively light bodied English blend that should not be ignored just because it's mass produced, available by the pound, with an appropriately no-nonsense name.
I recently gave about an ounce of the one pound bag I bought to a new pipe smoker friend of mine, who asked about pipe tobacco other than his old standard "Cherry Blend" from years ago. I mentioned the broad category of English blends and handed him a baggie of BS-005 as his starting point. He loaded up a cheap pipe that he bought from me, lit it up and started puffing away. He was instantly pleased with the taste, the aroma, and suddenly knew what he had been missing. BS-005 is straight forward, reliable and GREAT!!

If you like Latakia, you will not be disappointed.
It tastes of wood, pepper and cardboard. I could
only detect the Virgina's and orientals on retrohale.
I have smoked straight Latakia before but found
it was lacking, for the lack of a better word, sweetness.
This blend addresses some those deficiencies.
Lane 005 smoked down to a fine ash without a hint of
gurgle or tongue bite.
In my opinion an overlooked gem from this respected
producer of pipe tobacco.

After about 10 bowls of this I am neglecting my aromatics. It is a very robust earthy smoky flavor. Easy to smoke. Clean on the palate. But it punches you in the face with robustivity (I made up this word). Nuff said! $15 a Pound get out a here!

I usually smoke Lane BCA or 1Q, but have been trying other blends lately. I bought BS-005 (Lane really ought to explain where they get these names from!) and will be buying it again. I do not have the Knowledge or taste buds to describe fruit and nuts of a flavor, but it is a step in strength above my usual blends and has an enjoyable flavor. I like it better than EMP or Nightcap. Stays lit, burns to a fine ash. Good Smoke.
