Another great product from P&C
Was not expecting such small flakes. Had quite the time getting them apart. But once I did, it was so worth it. The first bowlful tasted almost exactly like spc plum pudding. When I finish this can, I’ll be back for more.

Experienced Pipe Smoker
I have been smoking a pipe for for 60 years and have enjoyed it. I keep a tin of Dark Strong Kentucky near my smoking material and go to it every know and then for a change. It smokes very well and in the evening satisfied my taste buds. It is probably not for a new pipe smoker but for those with a few years I would suggest giving it a try.

Not a massive fan
I love the tin notes. I'm relatively new to pipe tobacco. My first was Lane 1Q and I dont much care for that either. I will say I enjoy the experience of this blend. The prep and packing of the bowl. I like the look, the smell. The flavour thought for me was a very faint sweet fruitiness and then just bland tobacco. Good moisture from the tin. I usually let it sit about 15-20 minutes after rubbing it out and it smokes very well.

A pleasure for those who like dark-fired goodness.
Dark and strong, just like it says. However, this strength is in the flavor profile more than the nicotine hit. It's actually more of a medium strength as far as the nicotine hit. Still, I love full bodied blends and Orlik provides a solid dark-fired Kentucky and bright Virginia flake. This is a good smoke and I like it quite a lot. Not sure it if is available in the 3.5 oz. tins like Golden Sliced is, I would appreciate it if it was. Having this blend on-hand, I reach for it fairly often.

The winner is..........
Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired VS Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky First off, these are both very fine tobaccos in my opinion and are well worth a try. The tin and presentation of both is very nice. MAC BAREN stepping it up a notch with its gold foil lining making it feel as if you’ve just won Willy Wonka’s golden ticket! The Orlik would definitely win if the battle was on appearance of the tobacco with its beautiful dark and golden colors. But, what about taste? Well, for me, the Orlik is hands down the winner of this inning with its full, bold, and complex flavors. But, I would call the Mac Baren a close second. My thinking is that the anise casing of the Orlik really pushes the flavor of the tobacco. If you’re not a fan of that kind of casing , then you should really try the Mac Baren.

Coffee
Old dark fired is a great tobacco that goes wonderfully with a cup of coffee.

Earthy, Leathery, Nutty, Potent
I wanted a straight up Burly when I ordered this. Nothing but earthy tobacco. This met the bill. It needed a bit of dry time, but then smoked well to the bottom. I got the leathery almost chewable burley smoke up front , and then the nutty earthiness on the retro hale. This is winner by my book. I would caution unexperienced to smoke this one with food in the belly and a drink to accompany. The first time I did not and the nicotine hit made me dizzy and a bit nauseous.

high quality flake
I'm relatively new to pipe smoking and I gotta say this tobacco is pretty solid. a little weak on flavour (for a newbie) but for someone with a mature palette, this probably hits the spot. with flavours of barbecue and deep dried dark fruit such as blackberries and others I cannot put my finger on this tobacco satisfies. will definitely buy it again. only reason I give it four out of five is due to the weakness of the flavour on the smoke, though retrohaling does work wonders for this.

Old Dark Fired
I am a fan of English Blends and wasn’t sure if I would like this blend being primarily a Burly Blend but Old Dark Fired is now in my top 5. I can’t wait to get my hands on some more. Enjoy.

Orlik's Dark Strong Kentucky
This was offered by P&C through their "End of the Summer Sale," and it was an opportunity to try out blends I have been wanting to sample. This one is good. It comes in squares and is colorful in that it's "striped" if that's a proper description. Nice tasty smoke and very subtle in flavors.

Well balanced smoke!
I was unaware until recently that anise smooths out the harshness of burley and in fact is used in a lot of burley products. This is now one of my favorites. Just enough sweetness without hiding the real burley taste, I love the taste of real tobacco, and no bite due to my being somewhat of a constant puffer. The bonus comes from the clean after taste on the palate and light residual the next morning. No dragon breath.

Really a wonderful smoke, really enjoy the VA in this blend. In my opinion this just edges out McBaren's Dark Fired Kentucky.

Good tobac
I'm still getting my buds wrapped around this one. Nice earthy aroma after opening can. Too wet to smoke without drying for a bit therefore caused some tong bite for me. I think once I get the it dried properly it will unveil some amazing flavors.

Strong molasses scent
Okay, truthfully I would give this three stars but I feel like I will like it more if I try it a few more times. This tobacco has a tin note of very strong molasses. The room note is okay but nothing to write home about. The down side for me was the bite...... just a little too strong for me.

Fun smoke...
A vacation indulgence. Dropped into a pipe and tobacco shop on a summer visit to my home town...bought a tin of this and two tins of Presbyterian mixture (lucky me). Opened this one today and spent an enjoyable few minutes reducing two or thee flakes to smokable bits, loaded my favorite medium bent and lit up. Moist as it seemed, it was no chore to light and smoke...stayed lit easily, no steamy bite either. Nice rich taste with a little sweetness. Went to the bottom of the bowl easily with no surplus moisture. Will load a larger bowl next time as it’s a really enjoyable smoke and should be good for over an hour out of a larger pipe. Nice aftertaste and the wife reports a pleasant room note...will share at the next pipe club meeting. This is a good one in my opinion as it presents a nutty Burley taste with some fine Virginia notes and just the right strength. I’ve already put some on my monthly order along with a couple of other Orlick’s...just gotta try them.

Honest and Comfortable
This is a tobacco that one can smoke sit back and enjoy and it is one that you can enjoy while working on other things. It is honest and comfortable like an old sweatshirt on a brisk day. In my mind when I think what pipe tobacco should taste like this is it. Try it and see if you agree.

Don't Let The Name Scare You
I have a very sensitive palate and cannot tolerate strong tobaccos. DSL is full of flavor but has not bitten me once! The tIn note resembles Latakia, which I dislike, but has no Latakia room note or taste...at least not to me. If your tongue and mouth can't tolerate bitey tobaccos but you want more flavor, this is it. I have 13 tins!

Amazing
Worcestershire. BBQ. Earthy. Spice. Sweet. This is a favorite of mine. Whether you rub it out or stuff it you’ll be working to get it evenly lit, but it’s worth it. A true masterpiece. In a sea of english, balkans, vapers this blend stands unique. A must try for any fan of of those aforementioned blends.

Go ahead and Judge!
We're talking Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky here. What's there to say? Fans of Dark-fired Kentucky already know this is (pardon the pun) "The Judge", as in the one to judge all others by. So, there's many Kentucky blends out there...I like Mac Baren Dark Twist, I like Peterson's University Flake, and I really like St. Bruno Flake or ready-rubbed. I'm a fan of Kentucky. It's got all the smooth smokiness without the Latakia campfire, not that I don't mind a good English blend too, but I'd put Dark Strong Kentucky on the light-to-medium end of smokiness. I think the reason Orlik's Dark Strong Kentucky is a prime example of Kentucky is that it is a little sweeter than most. I'm not saying it's a heavily cased aromatic, but to my pallet it has more of a molassus-like flavor and sweetness than most. In fact, I'm not sure why they named it "Strong". It has robust taste for sure, but it wont knock you out with nicotine or anything. It's still got all of the great traits of Kentucky, but it's more of an all-day smoke compared to others. If fans of aromatics ever wanted to step out of their comfort zone and try Kentucky, this is definitely the one I'd recommend they try. As with any tins, moisture levels may vary, but Orlik's pretty good at getting close to ready-smoke most of the time. It is a flake, but they're short cut flakes which I guess makes them easier to stuff, though I always rub them out since I go through a tin of Dark Strong pretty quick. That's it! It's good stuff. It's one of my all-time favorites and the only thing I can think to warn someone about is that if you get a chance to buy, buy in bulk. It does tend to sell-out quickly for good reason. Hope this helps.

This awesome tobacco will be part of my smoking rotation. It satisfies my craving for a pure tobacco flavor. Awesome product

One of the best Kentuckys but flakes all stuck together
I like dark fired Kentucky a lot in general; it's not too sweet (just a little) and has enough nic to keep me satisfied without inhaling (I'm grateful that Kentucky broke me of that habit and probably saved my life). A lot of Kentuckys I use to spike my aromatics just for that purpose, but this is the only one I really enjoy smoking straight. It's strong but not so strong that it gives me that lump in my middle and tastes great on its own (could use a little age). My one complaint is that, the last few times I've ordered this, the flakes are all stuck together in the tin and don't come apart without breaking them all apart. It's sort of like when frozen food partially thaws and then freezes again and gets all stuck together. It's a shame because they went to all that trouble to make it in layers so it looks nice.

Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky
The Virginia and Kentucky tobaccos are proportionly blended to produce the type of aromatic smoke that I enjoyed in the 1960's. It smokes cool with a great aroma and room note. No bite. If you want a great pipe tobacco with natural tobacco flavor, this is the one.

Get to know Dark Kentucky
Try this flake! If nothing else, you will get a good idea of what you are dealing with when you are smoking a blend with dark fired Kentucky. I found it to be smooth with a nice deep natural taste that is reminiscent of Orlik Golden Sliced, but with a bit more sophistication. There is an almost chocolate finish and a nice creamy mouth feel as compared to Slices. It's like OGS for the cooler winter months. It's not "strong" in the way of a heavy English, but compared to the rest of the Orlik line it is strong. I jarred the rest of the tin for now, but I look forward to coming back to it after it gets a little age on it

Dark strong?
Who gives these names the taste is pretty smooth with a little bite at the finish with a bit of sweetness I like it I also got the henrick I think that’s how it’s spelled it has more spice bite than the orlik I prefer the orlik version

2018-- I'm sure glad this blend was recommended,...me by P&C engineers....its been a whole long haul waiting what almost seems to be the whole 3 years of anticipation....but soon I'll be sitting back puffing on one of God's own choice 's smokers....Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky!!

Flavorful Blend!
I’m a big fan of Deep, Flavorful blends and this one hits the spot. This blend supposedly tastes like Licorice but I don’t taste it. It does has a weird wet consistency when it’s smoked even when it’s dry. But nothing a pipe cleaner couldn’t soak up. I definitely would recommend at least trying this blend once if you call yourself a Piper.

Lots of flavor and well-behaved
Seems to morph between a sweet and sour flavor and a dark slightly smokey burley taste throughout the bowl and depending on how exactly you pack it. Smokes well rubbed out, a little temperamental in whole flakes, medium-strong flavors and probably a moderate nic hit at best to me.
5 out of 5
Rich flavorful smoke!
I really enjoyed this blend. It definitely is not an ambiguous smoke. It is a deep, rich and flavorful tobacco that gets even better as you smoke to the bottom of the bowl.

Campfire aroma, in a good way
Smokes very well after a small amount of drying, excellent campfire flavor and aroma. Highly Recommended!

Excellent
Full, bold flavor without being too harsh. It has a hint of that familiar Mac Baren tin note but is not that noticeable during the smoke. With just a touch of sweetness, this is probably my favorite VaBur. And as always great service from P&C.

Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky from my pipe
I was a little reprehensible about trying this blend. Some of the reviews told of high nicotine and I'm frankly a light weight about nicotine but I pressed on and planed to only smoke this blend for the week. From the tin the smell was so very nice. Sweet but not candy sweet. I understand that this blend has some topping but I do not think it is very predominant. The tobacco in my tin was moist but not wet. It gave me some trouble in trying to pull only one multi-level flake out at a time. After a couple of attempts I just rubbed the entire tin out and that was that. The char light was good with a nice sweet full body mouth fell. This prepared me for what was to come. After smoking down to the mid bowl level I was loving every draw. Very full body smoke that coated my mouth with sweet hay, crass, coco, and other flavors I couldn't put my finger on but very much what I have been looking for. Finishing the bowl the flavors stayed consistent even though I got a little fast on some of my draws. What about the nicotine you may ask? Well I didn't get it! I could feel that their is some nicotine in this blend but to be honest I didn't get a big hit of it. Unlike the Dun Hill Elizabethan mixture that I got quite a rush. Coming from a cigar world this tobacco was just right my alley. Rich full bodied packed with flavors that last into your next draw. I give this tobacco a 5 out of 5 pipes.

Rocketed to the Top
Non-Smoker me started pipe smoking about 3 months ago. I only bought well respected and reviewed tobacco to see what I like. For me this one will most likely trigger me to give away some of my stock. I now know excellence. I rubbed it out fully and made sure it was a little on the dry side. It burned beautifully. I got a very mild and warm nic hit of absolute perfection. The Orlik golden slice gives me a bigger nic hit than this, so I don't know what is really meant by "Strong", only that I can't really use that as an indicator. The most notable thing with DSK was that I got zero tongue bite, where the bite I get is from the spice and not steam. I really hope this wasn't my "Nirvana Smoke" as I might as well quit now if it was. DSK has rocketed to the top of my list.

A Treat
A treat and part of the rotation. mixed 1/2 MacBaren's Old Dark Fired or 1/2 Mac's Bold Kentucky and that ups the nicotine kick just fine for me!

A Very good buy
I have tried a couple of different brands and as a new pipe smoker this so far is one of the best and favorite I have had. You can really taste the flavor of the smoke, your experiences may vary but I would recommend this to any one a good quality flavorable tobacco. I will be buying again.

Not my cup of tea
I'm a fan of aromatic blends and within that baccy realm there is an unlimited arena of flavor pleasure. This is a non-aro but one without latakia or perique, which is why I tried it. It is, as some have described, like a camp fire. I don't mind sitting around one smelling it now and then as the breeze moves it around, but that is aroma. I don't care to taste a camp fire or a burning piece of wood in my mouth. I find the aftertaste of a smoldering wood fire to be very unpleasant. I've had this about a year and a half and have kept it because I realize the palette adjusts and changes. In this case, it confirms yet again that I am not among those who prefer dark fired baccy. I'll try another flake in about a year or so...

Simple Full Flavored
No complexity here, straight up rich, creamy and a tad sweet. My first flake, and very happy it was! I will be buying more in bulk, and putting this into my regular rotation. Would also serve as a great base for blending etc. Imo, you can't go wrong here...

Like The Tin Says, Satisfying
To start off Thanksgiving, I enjoyed a bowl of MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired Flake looking down from on top of my hill at the creek below. On a cool, damp morning, this flake is very satisfying...almost warms you up while enjoying with a mug of tea. From the tin, the flakes have a wonderful meaty/smoky/raisin note that follows through to the smoke itself along with the nuttiness that is characteristic of burley. To me, these flavors are most pronounced and best appreciated when retrohaled. I cubed the flakes so they would pack neatly into one of my favorite cobs which resulted in a slow, even burn that produced an almost perfect white ash. Rich, bold and flavorful, this is the perfect smoke if where you live is heading into the colder months of the year.

Great service and product!
Thank you for being my “go to” online source for quality tobacco. We don’t have a fine tobacco store in my area and PipesandCigars.com has everything I’ve desired. Orlik DSK has been an awesome blend and has introduced me to the world of non ready-rubbed tobacco. Love the flavor and the smoke. Thanks!

Straight tobacco No aromatic BS
I smoked Partagas Black Label cigars for years. They are very full bodied cigars. When I tried a pipe, every tobacco I found it seemed was mild and had some flavor or fruity scent added to it. The Old Dark Fired flake isn't as strong as I would have liked, but it works for me. I also like how easy it is to fold up a flake and start smoking. Doesn't take a lot of tamping and messing around like loose tobacco does. Give me a corn cob and a flake and I am happy.

Orlik dark strong Kentucky
Very good probably because it took me for surprise definitely not what I expected. From the name on the tin you would expect younger bite & a dry mouth. But that's not the case! DSK smokes very smooth it is dark but in my opinion it has a great aftertaste.i like this tobacco a lot!

One fine flake!
Another must try flake tobacco. In the tin they come in 3 little stacks, kinda looks like bacon.Unlike a lot of flakes this one doesn't need much drying time, lighting is easy.I get a sweet taste but still has a little kick to it.not an overpowering smoke which is nice.this is simply a well balance smoke.I am going to put this in my flake rotation.5 stars all the way!

Great Smoke
One of my favorites! Smokes cool & dry ! no matter what pipe I choose, meers, briar or cob, regular, long or churchwarden stem. Even does well in couple pear woods I own! All unfiltereed pipes of course - want to taste the tobacco! Put right up there with MacB Bold KY & HH Old Dark Fired, Peterson's Irish Flake, SG 1792 & G&H Brown Twist! Only wish it were available in bulk so I could cellar a pound or two in gallon glass jars with a lid instead of just putting the tins in the gallon jars! Leonard/

Head Spinner
Good tobacco, but far too strong for me. It had my head spinning. Great nutty taste but the strength knocked down the rating for me. I can't see putting this in my regular rotation.

My new favorite!!
I had low expectations of this tobacco. I liked orlik golden sliced because it's a well behaved good tasting flake, so I thought I'd also try this one. My only concern now is that I only ordered one tin. Within 3 bowls i am now absolutely in love with this tobacco. I'm a strong and hard working man. I never cried when my sons were born or when my grandpa died but I will cry if I run out of this tobacco.

Great Blend
Love Mac Barens Golden Extra and was advised by Georg Jensen to give this a try and glad I did. I'm a fan of burleys and this one hits the spot both in flavor, burn, and aroma. Very smooth and did not detect the N that everyone seemed to note. Thanks Georg for the recommendation

Great Blend HH Old Dark
Have always enjoyed Mac Barens Golden Extra. Was advised by Mr Jensen of Mac Barens to give HH Old Dark Fired a try. Glad I did. Very rich tasting. Tried the fold and stuff method, but too moist to burn well. Dried a couple of flakes and rubbed them. Smoked fantastic . If you like burleys, then your going to really enjoy this blend. Thanks Georg.

Flavorful balance of earthiness and sweetness
Earthy, nutty, with some raison and date fruit notes. Smoke is creamy and full-flavored. All in all, an enjoyable experience. However, if you are sensitive to nicotine, you might want to limit yourself to half a bowl because this one can go to your head if you're not careful. Absolutely worth a try!

A very good smoke
This one is great, very smooth and rich with a subtle sweetness. the one problem I had was I ordered during a cold snap and the flakes were all stuck together and to the paper in the tin. When they thawed the flakes all fell apart. So they rubbed themselves out lol. I will be ordering this one again.

Old dark fired
If you're looking for something with a lot of flavor, but you don't want a flavored tobacco this stuff is great. It has a very bold almost savory flavor. The only thing I would say is you might want to rub some flakes out 30 minutes to an hour before smoking. The flake is a very moist tobacco.

Overtopped
I'm a big fan of dark fired, not a fan of licorice/molasses. The topping is just too much for me. That being said, most of the added flavoring disappears about half way through the smoke. The second half is quite nice.

Good Stuff
I received this as one of the pipe tobacco of the month tins and have been blown away by how good this tobacco truly is. To be honest, I would have never have purchased this blend as it isn't necessarily in my wheel house, which is why I think that the pipe tobacco of the month club is such a great investment, as it is truly a great way to find blends that may surprise you. Anyway, the tobacco presentation is awesome, and the tobacco itself looks like slices of beacon, which made it hard not to want to eat it. After rubbing the tobacco out, and filling one of my briars, I sat back to a relaxing rich smoke. The sweetness from the Virginias are definitely there and give a sweet hay like note with just a slightly sour tinge on the finish. The dark fired Kentucky shines through about mid-bowl and adds a bold earthy note to the mix. The smoke finished with the flavors melding together seamlessly and left the bottom of the pipe full of a fine white ash. I was pleasantly surprised by a tobacco that I never would have tried had it not been for the fine folks at Pipes and Cigars, and their Pipe Tobacco of the Month club.

I enjoyed it from the moment I opened the tin. DSK has a great tin note that translates well into the smoke and only gets better as it goes.

Puurrty darn good
I liked this tobacco. It has some sweet flavor, to me and not that much bite. I didn't let it dry out too much, so it kept going out, but this will be a go to for me. Have to get more to keep it tinned for many months.

Great old school blend.
This is my second tin of this angelic flake with yellow and brown skirts. This is a great blend and especially for the price. However, if you have never tried it and looking for a strong burley blend this is not it. The name is misleading as it’s neither strong nor dark. DSK can be described as a soft burley with a licorice topping. It’s almost like an aromatic Golden Slice. Take Golden Slice and ad a wit bit of burley and a licorice toping and you have Dark Strong Kentucky.

So good
I bought this tin on a whim, just wanting to try a few non-aromatics. WINNER!!! I like a good stiff smoke, and this smoke definitely does the trick! Easy to light, easy to smoke, and I am always ready to load another pipe at the end of each bowl. My new go-to smoke!

Great Tobacco! Very earthy non-aromatic.
I enjoyed this tobacco very much. I usually smoke aromatics but every now and then reach for a non-aromatic blend. This is definitely one of my top choices and I look forward to trying some more blends by Mac Baren.

Strong Endorsement
Nice Smooth and yet bold Love the sweetness the continues to compliment the entire bowl. No bite (surprised as I smoked this brand new out of an unaged tin) The taste changes 2-3 times per bowl Tastes nice in a cob, but IMO nothing beats the briar with this blend

Very good.
Not as strong as I would have hoped, but very good nonetheless.

Instant love for MacBaren Old Dark Fired
I purchased MacBaren Old Dark Fired about a month ago, and loved it instantly. A full bodied and very flavorful blend. It reminds me of a lighter version of Latakia. I have a low tolerance for nicotine, and this blend is at the upper level of my tolerance. Rubbing it out, and letting it air dry for half an hour lets me smoke at a casual pace, and keep the effects of nicotine at bay. This is a very special blend has earned a permanent place in my rotation.

Orlik Dark trong Kentucky
The Name confuses some Pipe smokers because they think they get a strong nicotine type of blend, but it isn't. The blend is medium to mild in nicotine strength with a Strong Kentucky(Earthy) taste. I think the blend taste at best in narrow wide chambers like a pot shaped bowl, it doesn't do well in chimneys. After 3-4 charring lights the tobacco burns well and may sometimes it requires a relight. If you doesn't fill your bowl to tight the flavor stays very well and by the last 3rd of the bowl it taste more of a Virginia. A little drying time is also recommended.
