Pleasant enough
I’m new to the burley game but definitely a good starting point for a beginner. I can see myself coming back to this after it’s aged in my cellar for a nice smoke during my burley cravings. The flavor is rich of burley with a mild mouth feel and no tongue bite ! Nicotine level I would say is medium and burns nice in the pipe when folded and rubbed down into the bowl . Smoked in my Viking briar apple bowl Copenhagen111 mostly .

When I began smoking a pipe Golden Extra was my first tobacco and for years after I tried more tobacco then I care to mention. None of these met the smooth, cool and favor of Golden Extra. I will stick with it as long as smoke a pipe.

What can be said about Golden Extra, except that it is a good smoking tobacco

Fine on it’s own or...
Top of the line Virginia flake. Really like this with a slight addition of some Kentucky fire cured burly. The two work well together. This is my evening smoke now.

Extra goodness!
When you are craving a satisfying nutty burley blend this is it. Love Carter Hall as well but GE amps it up a bit. Perfect in a cob especially when you have a pipe in your mouth while you’re working or tinkering! Never disappoints if you go slow with it. Go easy lighting it as well.

Great Flavor! Great fragrance!
Many years ago (say, 37), I smoked a pipe for a short while. Then I stopped for a long time. When I did smoke, I smoked McBaren's. I just recently picked up a pipe and bought this Golden Extra tobacco. It is still as I remembered it. Just perfect. Even my wife who hates smoke, liked the smell.

Good pleasant smoke
Clean burning burley, light taste and aroma, packs great, highly satisfying, very low tongue bite (even when chugging hard). Certainly recommend and would purchase again

Nice Blend
A staple in my rotation. I sometimes add Latakia to the mix. Great choice.

Excellent in everyway
Can't think of a thing really bad about this tobacco. Good room note and flavor. Burns extra cool with n tongue bite. Is full of good grade Burley. Burns to a fine ash that's dry. The only way you won't like this is if you don't like Burley blends. Will be getting a large supply to have on hand next paycheck. Have a feeling this can be used to tone down blends that burn hot or have a strong aroma. Will make a good all day blend since heat and tongue bite are all but non-existent. If you like OTC Burley blends try this. It may cost a bit more but it is so worth it!

The Surpriser
After much reading of splendid reviews, I decided to try an ounce of Golden Extra. However, when I first opened the pouch, the surprise was that there was....no surprise. In fact, I thought I had possibly received the wrong item. There was no real flavoring aroma...just the clean, grassy aroma of Va and Burley. It was upon lighting, however, where the real surprise came in....clouds of a slight vanilla and nuts, teamed with a faint butterscotch aroma playing in the background. What a delightful surprise, and at such a reasonable price. No bite. Nice moisture level right out of the pouch. More was ordered, and it's joined my list of favorites. Well worth trying.

Nice Burley Smoke
A very nice burley base with sweet Virginia in the background. You can actually taste it all and the blend is very pleasing for sure. The burley is up front with the earthy full bodied smoke. As you smoke it the chocolate notes and the grassy sweetness begins to come through. Don’t smoke it to fast or it will sting a little, but that isn’t really a issue if you pay attention. Overall a excellent all day smoke, nicotine is just right to satisfy. Highly recommended!

Evening Burley
This is my evening time burley, I love this stuff its high grade burley with a smooth taste and all natural flavor, this has much depth and weight with a wonderful earthy taste that will not let you down. Golden Extra is not for beginner pipe smokers and must be smoked like a gentleman to get the desired taste without any bite, other than that I highly recommend this excellent pipe tobacco blend and Pipes and Cigars is the best service on the web for that.

Classic Burley
Started smoking GE back in the late 60's. I buy it in the 1lb. bag. That pretty much covers my thoughts.🤐👍

New uses for Golden Extra
One of Mac's best. Fairly easy to tame and great quality burley taste. I've been reading reviews for years (I'm 80) and best I can recall I've never read where anyone uses GE as a blending tobacco but I often throw in a couple ounces to wake up an otherwise mild to the point of boredom blend. I also enjoy it in something else I haven't read about. I call it 'layering'. I have to believe this is more common than reviews would seem to indicate. That is to say, I know I'm not the only clever pipe smoker out there. But here's my favorite. In a fairly tall medium bore pipe put a thumb size pinch of something like Lanes Q1 and then a sprinkle of GE. Repeat this using your normal packing method until the pipe is ready to light. Over time you'll develop your own preference for the size of the 'pinch' and the amount of the 'sprinkle'. It has really expanded the fun and pleasure of pipe smoking for me.

Long time fan of McBaren Golden Extra for 30+ years
Tobacco is as expected, mild on the tongue, and satisfying to the time. Do not dare change it.

Excellent old time favorite
One of the first tobacco's I smoked many years ago. Keep going back to it. Got into English blends but can't give up my G.E.- but this gives me time to age the Golden Blend and it just keeps getting better and better. It might not be everyone's favorite but I've never seen a bad review. Diffenitly would recommend this blend.

Great Burley
Started smoking GE in the 70's. Enough said.

Mac Baren Golden Extra
Fairly decent tasting tobacco, nothing really special, I did't care for the size of the leaf, to long and difficult to pack properly in the bowl, also kind of dried out, so I ground it up a little in my blender and mixed it with Lane RCL and Lane Dark Red, now it tastes pretty good.

Burley at its best
Started smoking Golden Extra back in the late 70's. Need I say more. If you like burleys, give this a try. You won't be disappointed.

Smoked in my Stanwell Bent Bulldog 401
A truly wonderful tobacco in every aspect. This was one of my first blends I tried that contained mainly burleys, and frankly it really turned me on to them. Nothing too complex, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Stays lit very well, burns cool and won't bite when taken slow. I get mostly a dark nuttiness from this blend, with almost a cinnamon-type sweetness, all underlined by what I think of as a slightly cigar-like underlying flavor. And by that I don't mean a powerhouse or strong blend by any means, in fact, this would be a great blend to start with. What I mean by cigar-like is that it reminds me of a young Connecticut cigar. Just how a good, quality tobacco should taste.  Overall, I have to say this is a blend you've got to try at least once. Especially if you don't like burleys; this one might just change that!

Good stuff
I have grown to really like this blend. It's got just the right mixture of sweetness but not overpowering as to drown out the natural flavor of the tobacco. Highly recommended

Not in the least overbearing with a pleasantly nutty taste and aroma. One of my favorite MacBaren Burley blends for over 30 years.

Golden Extra
Golden Extra is a wonderful smoke. When I first received my Lb. bag I dug right in. The taste was slightly sweet with plenty of smoke. Unfortunately I kept getting tongue bite. Fast forward 1 year after cellaring in a mason jar and the tobacco no longer gives me tongue bite. The smoke is still sweet, voluminous and mild to medium in nicotine. This has turned into a go to all day smoke.

Where Have I BEEN?!
I don't know WHERE I've been since MacBaren stopped making Burley London Blend but THIS blend, Golden Extra, is a very, very close cousin to BLB. It's not as rich As BLB but hey I've smoked a couple ounces and just recently ordered a pound of it. Wazzat tell ya? Tobacco won't be getting any less expensive and I seriously believe that within the next year or two pipes and tobacco will skyrocket in price, so I'm gettin' mine in pound bags. Then, order an acrylic jar to go with it at the same time. This almost surpasses my basic go to mix of Half and Half mixed with some Dark Burley that I've been woking with for a couple years now. Anyway, Golden extra has a nice sweet taste and aftertaste for me and I find that I must smoke it slowly, puff gently. Yes some say it's a little too moist for them. So, pack it loosely and I find that I don't have to keep drawing on it to stay lit. But then what's the hurry right? Re- light if ya have to or go ahead and dry it out a bit. I like to Fill my pipe a bit loosely and not rub out the broken up flakey constitution of it. It's great smoked as is. Smokes cooler that way too. Yeah, this is a wonderful blend worthy of any berley freak to at least try two ounces of.

Pleasant anytime of day.
A nicely matured tobacco. Burns cool, and slowly provides a relaxed smoking experience. Try it when you are reading a complex piece of literature.

MacBarens Golden Extra
I have been smoking this blend for over 50 years. I sold it at my tobacco shop. It is a wonderful blend, full of burley goodness; smooth flavorful; a great smoke early in the morning to the end of day. A classic! Like all MacBarens products, this is a gem so try it and see how you feel. I think you'll love it as well.

Very nice change from heavy aromatics
Smokes really nice and burns slowly. Go easy on the puffing and you'll enjoy it very much.

Burley as it should be
This is a nearly perfect Burley blend. Mac Baren's presentation is always artwork, the top note is chocolate with a bit of either honey or molasses, and the broken flake format keeps the tobacco burn rate cool. Just keep your smoking cadence somewhat temperate and there should be no bite whatsoever. Well done Mac Baren!

Growing on me....
At first, I didn't like this blend....it burnt my tongue something fierce....I've had other Mac Baren blends do so too, but not like this one. But because I really liked that nutty burley flavor & the room note, I soldiered on looking for the combination of preparation, pipe and dryness that would tame this blend. I found for me, a stack type pipe with a deep 3/4" bore worked really well...so I have a Royal Danish dedicated to this blend and all is well. Give it a try if you enjoy a good no nonsense burley blend!

Outstanding tobacco.
I've been smoking this blend for decades. Good room note, good taste, burns well. What more could you want?!

Pretty good stuff
I had heard this had a grain like flavor in addition to the burley. I didn't taste it the first couple bowls but I do now. It is a tasty no nonsense blend that is sweet from the virginia but is mostly smooth burley.

Golden Extra for golden years
46 years ago a man came in my store smoking GE. That was the same day I gave up cigarettes and spent a small fortune at Fred Diebles in Crown Center on pipes and tobacco which I still own today. This blend is awesome. Aroma flavor, taste and burn. Apparently I like burleys and this is what the Dr. ordered. I might add great service from P&C.

Mac Baren Golden Extra
Looked forward to the delivery of my first Golden extra. Gave it a fare try, twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening for a solid week. It was tried sitting in the shop and sometimes while riding to the fishing lake. Quite pleased with it. Lights well, burns even enough that I was able to keep the bowl warm but not hot. Taste was pleasant but not overbearing. Shared some with my fishing buddy but he likes a real sweet taste. For me it was just right. Will order more of the Golden Extra in the near future. Your shipping department is right on, a pleasure.

Worthy Substitute for Burley London Blend
Mild. Honey aroma. Almost as good as BLB, which they no longer make. 1

Tasty Stuff!
This is a great mid day smoke, smells great too. Burns pretty hot right out of the bag though.
Customer Testimonials
Comes a bit too moist, but a bit of drying improves its smoking properties. Can't taste the Virginia, but enjoyed the sweet and smoky flavor of natural burley. Excellent value.
AL of Forest Grove, OR
Been smoking this for over 30 years and, although it's described as an aromatic, I never really considered it one. It's mellow and a favorite standby that's been consistent over the years. It can bite if smoked too quickly so sit back, relax and enjoy and old time favorite.
