This stuff works for me.
This stuff works for me. First thing in the morning, lunchtime, after dinner, anytime. I have experienced "flavor fatigue" if I I don't periodically smoke something else, say one of the Amphoras. There is such a thing as " too much of a good thing"; even the best tobaccos can lose their appeal through repetition.

Mild.
Very mild till a relight halfway through. Then it got a bit strong. Mild smoke mostly. I prefer the tins, they have this drool inducing 'sourness' to the pressed tobaccos.

Mac Baren Scottish Mix has become my standard for an aromatic - it has more of a flavor than others, a nice room note, no bite, and an appreciable nick-hit. It is more robust and complex than other aromatics.

The longer cut is great, quality burn from start to finish. Not a distinct flavor in my opinion but quality makes it all together a great smoke!

My everyday blend
This is my go-to blend these days. It lets the taste of the good tobaccos come through without casing getting in the way. Burns cool, burns slow, and as an everyday smoke sets up my taste buds for the occasional English or full aromatic blend in contrast. And the P&C price makes it a bargain.

My first pipe tobacco from years ago.
This is my special treat smoke. The aroma from the tin smell all the way to the room note is the treat. Easy to light and favorable to smoke all the way to the end with only ashes to tap out of the bowl. Make sure you sit back and enjoy a slow pace as it burns with your easy puffs.

Good, Not Great
Smells good in the tin, what you would expect a good pipe tobacco to smell like. Smokes pretty hot unless you sip really easily. For me, the tastes are pepper, unsweetened cream, and pine. The piney taste is very nice, and not too strong. It just seems like there is something missing that would make this really good. I plan on pressing the remainder of the tin and aging my other tin.

All and all a 5 star tobacco. The room note of this tobacco is reminiscent of Ceder wood and lingers nicely for a pleasant lasting smell, and the flavor is high quality,, with slight woody and earthy undertones smoke it slow though as it tends to bite.

I love this stuff. In
I love this stuff. In a day when most pipe tobaccos now have unpleasant and unnecessary preservatives, this one is actually enjoyable to smoke. It taste and smells like tobacco and it burns well. If you pack lightly and smoke slowly, you will see why this is one of the most popular pipe tobaccos in the world. Happy Smoking.

One of my favorites!
A complex and smooth mixture that has a pleasant amount of natural sweetness without ever getting bitter. Bite is minimal to nonexistent when smoked properly, and the pipe remains dry, especially compared to other aromatics. This is a blend that gets better as you smoke it, allowing you to savor its subtle nuances.

A nice, well behaved Scot......
My friend told me of soft evenings on Loch Lomond with a tin of MacBaren & a pipe, and when I saw this, I had to try it. A toned down & mellower English Blend, that takes me back to the Highlands and Glens. Simple, basic, and goes great with three fingers of Glenlivet 12. This and MacConnell's, have become the perfect nightcap for this old Scot..........A regular in my stable now. Like hanging with my Scottish Grand-dad, watching the sunset in Ayrshire.

Long time favorite
I have been a regular smoker of tje McBeren's Scottish Mixture since 1970. There was a time when I could not find in my local tobacconist shops. Then I found pipes&cigars.com! Now I have a ready supply of my favorite tobacco easily available, I am quite happy with Pipes&Cigars.com!

My newest favorite!
Too easy to smoke in any of my pipes, though it tastes best in my Missouri Meerschaum. Burns quite cool and has superb subtle flavor from the first puff. This is a daily and day-long smokable tobacco and easily can become a favorite of even a neophyte.

Comfort and joy!
I'm an "on and off" pipe smoker, sometimes staying away for years at a time. Being a bit older I've decided to enjoy the pipe again and seek out all those blends I've only read about over the years. I've decided that a moderate to full English blend is my favorite. However, I usually only smoke one bowl a day or every couple days. I really like a a nutty Va-Per or Burley in between those English blend smokes. I finally got around to trying Mac Baren's Scottish Blend...Ahhh, perfect. So pleasant in taste and room note. A perfect in-between for the latakia lover as I have become.

Must Try!
Great stuff. Highly recommended for both aromatic and non-aromatic smokers. Not overwhelmingly flavored. Non-aromatic and English blend smokers would love it too. Very smooth and mellow. Definitely going to order again. Pipe used: Rossi Rubino (Prince)

Hurrah for Scotland!
Being an Aromatic fan, I find that latakia can be overwhelming at times, yet I do enjoy a good non-aromatic as well. This is where Scottish blends come in. They're a non-aromatic with less emphasis on the latakia as the English blends. I'm convinced that it's always a good idea to store a jar of Mixture Scottish in your cellar for the occasion when you want variety without the overwhelming taste of latakia.

What a mixture
Ive read some mixed reviews of this blend, but I found it quite nice. Mild aro with a nutty flavor. I very much enjoyed the mix of leaves that cause a morphing of flavor as the bowl burns. Smoke it very slow, it can get hot fast but it has nice flavor with a soft cadence.

Bring back Latakia coins
MacBaren does not make any bad blends. Mixture is a classic. I wish MacBaren would bring back the original Latakia Blend coins. That was a favorite of mine in the 1960' and 70s. I would buy 10 pounds of that one. Miss that and Sobranie.

A different smoke for me
I'm only recently back as a pipe smoker (40+ years after being one in my early 20s). I've been trying out a good number of blends in an attempt to develop my palate and to see what works for me. I finally gave Mixture Scottish a try a week or so ago. I found it to be a mild yet somewhat flavorful smoke - though different from blends I've enjoyed a lot so far. On the basis of a single bowlful I can say this will be a nice change up for me, from time to time. It definitely won't be a daily smoke, but for a change of pace it's a blend I can enjoy.

A good blend to transition into, or away from aromatics.
My experience so far with Mac Baren Mixture has been quite pleasant. This is a very solid four stars, and definitely see this as an anytime, all day blend.A very diverse combination of tobaccos which creates a smooth and sort of nutty flavor. Mild like a cashew or macadamia, not a peanut or almond, if that helps. As well as every so often I get a nose of crem brûlée, or a toasty caramel aroma. The burn is very smooth and characteristic of quality tobacco. Compared to other aromatics this one is pretty multidimensional, flavors and aroma are subtle and require a slow and thoughtful pace. This was my first Scottish blend and my first Mac Baren variety and will be investigating further. Happy smoking!

Daily Use Suggested
When I was a United States Marine and we would train with Marines from other services, the Scots were incomprehensible, huge and brawny, great fun and awesome to behold. That has absolutely nothing to do with this tobacco except to say we could depend on them and I depend on this as one of my two main rotations of daily use tobacco. Mild, pleasant, smooth. Delicious without needing too much concentration. A great road trip smoke. This is the tobacco I will pop a few bowlfuls into a snack size Ziploc and give to neophyte smokers as an intro to quality beyond the mass-produced pouch tobaccos.

good smoke
I'm not sure what a Scottish mixture should taste like but this is a fine blend some light english overtones and a little on the aromatic side.

Great flavor, great smoke
I didn't quite know what to expect with this tobacco, but I figured I'd give it a shot since I haven't had a MacBaren that I didn't like. The flavoring is light, so you can still taste the tobacco. Burned clean down to the bottom of the bowl. No bite. The top note is a caramel sort of flavor. This has got to be one of the best pipe tobaccos I've had. I'll be getting more.

Pipe Smoker for over 50 years.
I am not a professional tobacconist but have enjoyed smoking pipe tobacco since graduating from college over 50 years ago. I have tried dozen(s) of domestic and foreign pipe tobaccos over the years but always seem to return to the fine Mac Baron family tobaccos. The notable exception was when an advertising executive introduced me to the Balkan Sobranie Original Smoking Mixture (BSOSM) on an American flight to New York in 1969. It was truly a magnificent, rich Latakia experience but, unfortunately, the company mysteriously quit blending BSOSM and was subsequently sold to another group in the mid-80s. My favorite tobacco these days is Mac Baron’s Mixture Modern Danish blend. I enjoy smoking a half bowl in my favorite Peterson pipe oftentimes at mid-morning and, again, around 5:00-ish each afternoon while occasionally adding a pinch or two of Mac Baron’s Latakia flake to the Danish mixture and a wee dram of single malt scotch or small brandy when I fondly recall the nostalgic Balkan Sobranie days. A couple of suggestions for the novice: Start with a good briar, large bowl pipe (again, I prefer Peterson), buy a good pipe lighter, and stay away from the so-called “aromatic” tobaccos flavored with Bourbon, Rum, Brandy, Cherry, Vanilla, Citrus or whatever. They typically burn hot and will bite your tongue.

Top notch tobacco with amazing flavour. The tin note reminds me of an English Breakfast Tea and the flavour changes throughout of vanilla, chocolate, cherry, coffee, and caramel. Lights and burns well. It’s in my current rotation of tobacco.

Been Smoking this Mac Baren Scottish Mixture Since 1971
I started smoking a pipe in college in 1968. In 1970 I started working after class at a tobacconist near the campus. The most popular blends were mostly burley tobaccos which were loaded with "aromatics" which made for a pleasant "room note" but at the end of the day bit one's tongue like a rabid she wolf. The shop had a hundred or so caned varieties to choose from. the owner of the shop smoked Mac Baren's Golden Extra. he suggested I try one of the Mac Baren tobaccos. I tried the Scottish Mixture, and liked it. It has been my regular smoke ever since.

My original favorite revisited 10 years later.
When I started smoking a pipe in 2007, this was the first quality blend that I smoked. It quickly became my favorite on account of the complexity of flavor that it left in my mouth. I slowly began to"step up" to more of what is considered advanced blends. (English and such) I soon forgot about Mixture Scottish and it faded from memory. Recently I decided to give it another try for old time sake after being reminded of it via an old pic of me smoking my pipe with the tin in hand. I received it in the mail a few days ago and my love for this blend has been rekindled to say the least. Rich flavors with the Virginia's up front, nicely complemented by burley and black Cavendish. The taste developes nicely throughout the bowl with the last third being my favorite. And the lingering after taste I love so much leaving earthy, woodsy, leathery, slightly sweet with a little pepper, flavors which leave you enjoying this smoke long after the bowl is finished(particularly on the exhale). Welcome home MBMS!!

Dancing round the Scottish moor..
Upon first cracking the tin I was greeted by an over powering aroma of pumpkin pie and gingerbread glazed in some sort of too rich glaze like white chocolate. The confectionery note was unforgiving. I purchased the tin hearing it was a so-slight an aromatic I should rest easy; Here is where the story deepens. First the mechanics of the smoke were great. Packing, lighting and staying lit were in high form. This was welcome. I decided to jar up the blend and re-visit it next fall to see if it would lose some of it's edge. I kept staring at the jar. My cellaring barely lasted a week before I was reaching for it. It's not so entirely be-witched of its' essence but I'm taking some delight in it whist cursing it's confectionery witchery. I realize it's not a true Scottish blend as it lacks brown Cavendish. Call it what you please. I'm ordering more.

Always a good, solid smoke
I think one of the first tin tobaccos I ever bought was Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend. After reading that the tobacco had been on the market since 1958 and was one of the first aromatic tobaccos ever created, I just had to try it. I wasn't disappointed! Since that first initial smoke several years ago, I've kept coming back to Scottish Mixture. It's a nice staple in my rotation that I try to always keep on hand.

Excellent Product!
I really like the Scottish blend. It is nutty, smooth, and even burning. At first light it has a fruity raisin like aroma. This mixture gives a distinct tobacco taste and is a great. I like that it is natural no frills. The Virginia no. 1 is also akine to this blend.

The next best thing
I was a huge fan of "Scottish Ribbon" from the now defunct Connoisseur Pipe Shop in NYC. MacBaren's Scottish Mixture (loose) is the next best thing. In fact, it was suggested by a fellow pipe smoking acquaintance that the shop used this mixture and re-labeled it. Great flavor and cut, and just aromatic enough to satisfy the needs of the smoker who prefers English blends and wants to go aro to switch things up. MacB's never disappoints.

Good Stuff!
A pleasing blend of homogenous flavors. In my opinion, while described as an aromatic, it is not overpowering. It can burn a little hot if smoked too quickly. Great as a relaxing slow evening smoke, or for that fact, an all day smoke. I believe that this will find its way into my cache of permanent tobaccos. Even if your preference is non-aromatics, give this a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised as was I.

Nice smoke
Coming feom a person that prefers non aros, This is a nice smoking aromatic. What I enjoy about this tobacco is there is no added flavors drowning out the other tobaccos. This smokes a little on the hot side and I noticed I needed to slow it down a tad. The flavor is very nice, nice hint of citrus with a slight plum taste and nice spice. The flavors of this tobacco compliment eachother very well. The room note is alright, nothing crazy good smelling, but a decent mellow note. This is one I will keep in my rotation.

An aromatic with a difference
So what do you like in a tobacco? Well until I had this blend I would have said that in aromatics, I prefer sweet flavorings that lean toward chocolate or other confections. So when I opened my bag from P&C and smelled the sourness that is almost cloying, I was worried. While sweet, I find this blend to have a sour almost fermented note and taste that is a bit startling at first. For me, within just a few bowls I found myself craving that sourness, especially in the evenings. I smoke a pretty wide variety of aromatics, and while each has its own nuances, many are very similar- Capt. Black Reg, Lane 1Q, Lane RLP-6, Scottys Butternut Burley, Trout Stream- all are close siblings in my book. This blend is different, and I think it is the sour/fermented note that does it. You'll either love it or hate it, but you should try it if you like aros. I get NO bite from this even if I rush, and that is saying something because I can even make Butternut Burley bite if I am in a hurry. The longer I have this on my shelf, the more I find myself reaching for it. If you are looking for an aromatic that isn't in the same immediate family as 1Q, Capt Black and Butternut Burley, give this one a shot. Your milage may vary, but right now, this is a 5-star blend for me.

Great Mild Aromatic
This is a great tobacco. To be honest, this doesn't really have the taste of a traditional aromatic for me. It has a cedar-y woodsy flavor that is quite natural and very subtle. It's certainly a dry, cool, relaxing smoke.

I haven't smoked the Scottish mixture in many years, decades perhaps, and gave it a try for a walk down amnesia lane. As with just about all Mac Baren's, this was a quality smoke. It lighted easily, stayed lit, and burned to fine ash in the bottom of the bowl. Although I enjoyed it, and finished all I bought, I found that it just didn't suit my tastes. Perhaps this is because I've moved into the heavier Latkia tobaccos for everyday use. I'll give it five stars for quality and smoke-ability, it just won't find a place in my regular rotation. If you like Scottish type blends, or just want to branch out, I would highly recommend it.

MacBaren's Scottish Mixture
Great blend! Have smoked since my prep school days, and always found all the MacBaren's Blends outstanding. We featured them weekly at my tobacco shop {The Havana Room] at our Thursday night tastings.

Good Smoke
Considering it wasn't my type of blend I did enjoy it. Good taste and nice room aroma.

Good with Scotch but Better with Irish Whskey
A good blend puff light and rub out before lighting. Close to Symphony but a fuller smoke. The good typical Mac Baren Aroma little Sour but sweat. Always good nicotine level. This blend is good with Scotch but better with Irish whiskey.

A very enjoyable smoke...
I am not a fan of aromatic blends in general but this blend is a pleasant departure from the norm....no goopy mess in the bowl, fingers not sticky from topping, good honest tobacco flavor with a very pleasant room note. I have a Royal Danish that I dedicated to this blend because of its deep but narrow bore...my preference of course. I recommend rubbing out the big pieces and let it air dry for 1/2 hr before smoking...not too tight in the bottom and go somewhat slow...it is after all a Mac Barens blend and if pushed too hard, will bite.

A nice moment
I don't care much for aromatics because they can be too sweet, but Scottish Mixture is nice evening moment. Always rubbed out and air dried about 20-30 minutes just before. Smokey smooth.

A great Tobacco!
An excellent consistent tobacco. I have enjoyed this blend for forty+ years. It can be hard to find at regular pipe shops. I am so happy I have found Pipes&Cigars online to supply this favorite blend.
Customer Testimonials
This is currently my favorite tobacco, and I can see how the other reviewers go months without smoking anything but Mixture. Regardless of what your go-to smoke is, every pipe smoker needs to give this at least 3 bowls before moving on. It’s an incredibly satisfying smoke with good body and smooth mouthfeel. I know it’s technically an aromatic, but I have a hard time thinking of it that way. I’d liken the experience and aroma (not necessarily the taste) to freshly baked whole grain bread. The Virginias in the ready-rubbed flake are the star, but the burley and cavendish give it warm, toasty undertones. The balance of bright and warm is perfect with a hint of sweetness and creaminess. You definitely have to smoke it slowly to get the full beauty of the flavor. Like everyone says, you get something slightly different each time depending on how you pack, which is just enough variation to keep it interesting, yet the flavor remains surprisingly consistent and distinct. It’s unfortunate others have experienced some bite—it hasn’t bitten me once, but then I’ve been smoking it in smaller, narrower bowls. It burns well to a clean, fine, white ash all the way to the bottom of the bowl.

Pretty good stuff! I think I detected a slight fruity aroma and taste while I smoked it.
