Mac Baren Modern Virginia Flake Cut

Mac Baren Modern Virginia Flake Cut is a different approach to a Virginia flake. Bright and darker Virginias are combined with a black Cavendish which is made from Virginia as well. A small amount of Burley is added to help keep the tobacco cool and to mellow the sweetness.

The tobaccos are pressed for a minimum of thirty days after which they're sliced into flakes. The tins are packed by hand to maintain the integrity of the slices.

A pleasant fruit top dressing is applied to Modern Virginia Flake Cut in an amount that's just enough to be noticeable, and to enhance the flavor of the tobacco while allowing the blend to shine through.

Flavored like cream and not like straight Virginia
I like fruity aromatics and I like straight Virginias so I had high hopes for this. It burns very well and produces lots of thick, luxurious smoke but, ultimately, this has a very creamy, coffee-creamer type flavor which isn't really my thing and not fruit as I know it. I prefer a bright fruity flavor something along the lines of Lane Black Raspberry or H&H Berry Nice. I also think Mac Baren's Pure Virginia is some of the greatest stuff on earth. If this had been that with a hint of fruit flavor, I would have been very happy, but it's nothing of the sort.

I liked this product from the first bowl, and it seems that I like each subsequent bowl a little bit more than the last. It could be that each blend/cut requires minor adjustments to smoking technique that we make without realizing that we are making, resulting in a more satisfactory smoke. In any case, I seem to have stumbled on to a pipe/tobacco/smoking style that really works for me with Mac Baren Modern Virginia Flake. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys a virginia based smoke.

Modern virginia flake
Mac baren tobacco blends are always top quality however everybody taste is different hence the different ratings. This one has some sort of sweet casing to it but it does not mask the flavor of the tobacco. Burns well with minimal dry time and can be rubbed or fold and stuffed although the latter is tricky. Slow smoking is very important with all tobaccos but with macbaren its a must. Room note is not going to win any prizes. Its not the cheapest blend either.

My "go to" Virginia Flake and a Friendly Choice for the New Pipe Smoker.
I prefer it over other Virginia Flake. I purchased a tin of this during the Columbus Pipe show a couple years ago and has been my "go to" tobacco for a short smoke, to break-in a new pipe or just to balance out some other, stronger bowls throughout the day. Moisture out of the tin is a bit on the high side but hasn't been an issue to stay lit with minimal re-lights. Rubbed out or folded it burns easily and produces a nice, friendly mellow smoke. The topping or casing from the description sounds a bit much (for an English smoker such as myself) but while it's noticeable it's in no way obnoxious or gets in the way of the Virginias that this tobacco is comprised of. Some Virginia flake is on the "grassy" side or on the "bready/yeasty" side this strikes a good balance in between. If you're looking for a good Virginia flake and have come from primarily Aro's or just looking to start someone out without having them try the "goopy" Cavendish aro's most commonly suggested for new pipe smokers this may be a good choice. As mentioned earlier I tend to use this for new pipe break-in as it builds a modest cake in a reasonable time and really don't leave much flavor behind (you could go for English or Aro's following this blend). This is very mild too (some may say too mild) but has enough flavor to keep you involved (maybe not completely interested). About the only negative I'd say for this blend is that depending on the chamber size/shape and packing method chosen there's a least a chance you'll get a bit of moisture in the bottom of your pipe and for a new smoker they might view that as a challenge. Room note isn't bad though being a Virginia some may complain that it's too close to cigarette (which I can see), Note from the tin is (to me) delightful - for some might be "boring". If it were a dollar or two less expensive I'd buy several tins with every P&C order.

Mac Baren Modern Virginia Flake Cut
I wrote a bad review on this that did not seem to make it into the reviews. I have since tried it in other pipes and like it quite a bit.

Great from start to finish.
Very good. I had to read up to work out the whole flake style. I think now I'll enjoy it even more.

Excellent all-season flake blend
Great fruit note, just the right hint of Cavendish for a mellow smoke. Easy to light, moist but doesn't smoke wet.

Macbaren Tobacco is Great *****
Have smoked this flake in the past and it is packaged correctly, moist upon arrival an lights with no problem after the char light.Taste of Vanillia is there but too much to overpower the tobacco flavor.

Mac Baren Modern Virginia Flake - A Fine Tobacco
A very nice Virginia blend with predominate citrus and some grassy notes. The pleasant apricot topping is noticeable in every puff but diminishes somewhat in the latter half of the bowl. Lights easy, no bite, and leaves no dottle. A fine tobacco.
