Mac Baren Classics Navy Flake

Every blender seems to have a different interpretation of what "navy flake" means. Mac Baren Classic Navy Flake is one of the smoothest and easiest-smoking versions of this traditional tobacco style. Superior quality Burleys are combined with sweet Virginias and some of Mac Baren's fabled Cavendish and finished with a splash of rum and a touch of honey before pressing. Then the tobacco is sliced into beautiful golden flakes that are easy to prepare and delivers a silky-sweet flavor you can enjoy morning, noon, and night.

Not my favorite
Good room note! Not special as far as taste goes. As a Mac Baren fan, I had high hopes. I’ll keep smoking over the next couple weeks. Maybe it will grow on me.

Wonderful Surprise
Opening the tin gives off an aroma of walking into a pastry store with aromas of freshness, rum raisin. Smoke like cream going over my tongue. No bite, smooth. Burns easily and the moisture low enough to keep it burning without relight more than once. My new favorite tinned flake and well worth the money for the enjoyment received. A must try.

Honey
The smell, taste and room note are excellent. That honey smell draws people in. I was told that this smoke "Smells like comfort and reminds me of home." Excellent choice of smoke for anyone.

Smell and taste of honey.
I'm new to Mac Baren. I've tried many different types and flavors ranging from GL Pease, Sutliffe, Orlick, Russ, Cult, CAO, Captain Black, Ole Shenandoah, Cornell & Diehl, Hearth & Home..... My first in the Mac Baren line was 7 Seas Black. I really enjoyed that one and decided to try a couple others. I opened this tin and that first smell won me over. Not knowing what to expect with this one, that smell of honey in the Navy Flake was AMAZING. It's got a nice even burn, no bite, nice room note, and a pleasing finish. And I can STILL smell that honey. I just got this tin but I'm already ordering a few more. Just in case. ;) This one is now a favorite.

Rubbing it out becomes a ritual.
A cool smoke with fresh from the drying barn flavor.

This has become my go
This has become my go to tobacco, and my favorite. It has a nice semi smooth and mild forward tobacco taste, with a slight sweetness and nuttiness in the background from the rum and the burley.

Pretty good.
Smokes well down to ash. Stll looking for less aromatics and flavoring. Closest to Troost Special that I've found.

Smooth and Fragrant
I purchased the Mac Baren Navy Flake because it was the tobacco my wife's grandfather smoked. He passed away when she was a teenager and she kept an empty tin because it reminded her of him. After trying it myself, I can see why it was his favorite. The tobacco sheets a beautiful golden color with streaks of dark brown. Its slightly moist to the touch and easy to work into the pipe. Prior to lighting, it has a distinct rum and tobacco scent. Once lit, the smoke is smooth with only a slight spice tongue bite. The aroma as my wife describes it is "masculine" with the obvious tobacco, hints of leather, oak and a bit of sweet fruit which may come from the rum. It's a great smoke that for me finishes more like a dessert and less like a main course.

consistently good
I always keep this tobacco in my rotation, I believe it is the gold standard in navy flakes.

Great Navy Flake
This, for me, is a close second to PS Luxury Navy Flake. It has a great topping that isn't overpowering, and a smokey flavor that makes it unique. It's very enjoyable and has earned its spot in my rotation.

still my favorite
I recently started smoking a pipe again after 40 years of cigars. I remembered smoking navy flake and how enjoyable it was. I was glad to see it was still available and as good as I remembered. I usually start my smoking time with a small pipe-full of Orlick golden sliced to set the mood, and then it's a generous bowl of navy flake. The intense flavor of the nf is always a pleasure and a nice contrast to the Orlick. The one drawback is a tendency to burn hot and bite if you puff too fast. I find if I break up the flakes and pack it loosely and go easy, it's a wonderfully flavorful smoke.

Stays good
M.N.F. has been in my rotation for some years now and still get pleasure. Could be my favorite Navy flake. What is left over at night is good in bottom of morning bowl.

Macbaren Navy Flake: delicious taste and aroma
I discovered Macbaren Navy Flake while living overseas in the Netherlands. It had been awhile since I had puffed it so I bought a 100 gram tin from Pipes and Cigars along with my usual several tins of Orlik Golden Sliced. Boy, was I missing out not having Macbaren Navy Flake in my rotation. Yes it has a slight topping, but I mostly taste pure tobacco goodness. It is delicious, in my opinion, and the aroma of the smoke is delectable. Zero bite. If you like Orlik Golden Sliced like I do (my hands down favorite pipe tobacco), give Navy Flake a try. I love it.

Needs Perique
I don't know how or why Mac Baren would make a Navy Flake without Perique in it, but if you add a good pinch of bulk perique to it after you rub this out, it's way better.

Consistent Quality
I have liked this flake for many years and still do. It's on the mild side, in a good way. A very easy, relaxing smoke with a subtly sweet taste.

Perfect blend of tobaccos and aromas!
My first flake tobacco. Was hesitant at first since I did not know the amount of aromatics this would have. Come to find out, the combination of virgnias, burley and cavendish is perfectly blended. The rum and honey notes just puts it in another level. Will order more to cellar. Smoking it in a meerschaum lattice pipe that I got few weeks ago and am trying to color.

Harsh.
Good for a quick smoke. Don't expect anything special when it comes to flavor or aroma. Tastes like someone loaded my pipe with cigarette tobacco.

A diversion
I've smoked MacBaren's Scottish Mixture for years. This is a slow-burning diversion that is pleasant enough, but lacks the subtle taste of the Scottish Mixture.

Nice Blend
I wanted to try the Navy Flake and was not disappointed. It smells like the Scottish blend but pressed into square strands. Smokes cool and flavor changes as we work through. Peppery up front to a smooth rum/nutty flavor. Will get again.

Navy Flake
I smoked Navy Flake back in the 1960's and it was much better than the current blend. Better flavor then, and more concentrated.

Best of the navy flakes
After trying many, PS deluxe navy flake is easily my favorite. Smells nice, crumbles and packs well, lights easily and burns evenly and cool to bottom of bowl. Bold full tobacco flavor with an enchanting rummy sweet finish. This is my favorite, so it is good that it comes in affordable bulk fashion.

Easy, reliable smoke
One of my go-to blends. It's fine texture makes it easy to light, even when you fold and stuff. Pleasant smoke with no obvious flavorings.

One of the best!
It's my subjective review... "MacBaren's Navy Flake"! I was a (very, very) pleasant surprise. Exclusively mixture Virginia, Burley and special Mac Baren's Cavendish bring this flake sweetness and lightly blueberry smell. I am really enjoying this flake and will continue to do so in the future!

Customer Testimonials
Opening the tin is like opening an expensive gift. You are presented with beautifully wrapped tightly pressed flakes and the tin note is incredible delicious. I stuffed 1/2 flake into a very small cob that usually gives me about 15 to 20 minutes with other tobaccos but this burned on and on, it felt like 45 minutes. I wasn't expecting such a wonderful flavor, slightly sweet and fruity, with no bite at all (unusual for Mac Baron). This is a perfect 10, stock up on this one.
PA of Scituate, MA
My first experience with a flake-style tobacco, and I do believe I've struck gold. The tin note is delicious; I had to restrain myself from eating it. Figs, honey, and a bit of light molasses. The smoke has a different profile, but very much in the same spirit- rich tobacco, brown sugar, and just a hint of dark fruitiness through the nose. It isn't overbearingly sweet to the palate, but richly sweet in a very " round" sort of way, if that makes any sense. Burned all the way to the heel after 1 hour dry time and fold/stuff preparation. The 3.5 ounce tin should last a while, but i went ahead and ordered a pound to cellar and age. Exemplary service from an outstanding comapny as well.

Mac Baren's Navy Flake is one of my top 5 tobaccos. IT"S JUST GREAT STUFF!!! I personally use the fold and roll technique and then put a few small pieced of rubbed out flake on top to help with the initial lighting. The smell of this tobacco in the tin is heavenly.
SM of OOLTEWAH, TN
Love it! Ive only smoked one flake so far and I can already tell its going to be a mainstay. Im definitely going to keep a few tins on hand.
WS of monmouth, IL
This is my new go to. It's a great smoke, smooth, with just about the right touch of rum to finish it. Absolutely delightful smoke with no bite.
