Sweet Virginia.
Excellent straight Virginia. Has some sweetness like it has a toppping, but I don't think it does. Bought the bulk, so impressive for a bulk tobbaco. I will order more which is saying something.

A Virginia tobacco for everyone
Even though I grew up in central Virginia tobacco country, my decades-long journey through scores of pipe tobaccos always seems to lead back to the smoothness of classic Virginia preparations based on flakes. This "ready-rubbed" product has all of the quality of a good Virginia flake, but in a form more familiar to pipe smokers who are not riveted to flakes. The smoke is even and mild, but full of flavor. It is good any time of the day, and delivers the benefits of a flake without the maintenance, mostly because the rubbed form naturally allows more air into the pack in the bowl. It is easy to light and to keep going. I highly recommend this product for those new to pipes--it will introduce you to the beauty of Virginia tobaccos.

Nice smoke , tastes great
Nice smoke , tastes great , no bite but can burn a tad hot if exposed to the breeze but its well worth the caution of avoiding a gale.

McBarens Virginia #1 (tin)
The Mcbarens virginia #1 is a very good pipe tobacco. The next step up is the McBarens ready rubbed with a stronger taste and more tongue bite. But the #1 is comfortable to smoke a full size bowl, and it smokes nicely to the very end, not tasting ashy at the end, it burns excellently & does not need frequent re-lite. I recommend at least trying this 1 time. I'm sure it would be a regular or at least in your rotation of regulars.

Worth It!
Very good tobacco. This is a "ready rubbed" tobacco, but you'll probably need to rub it out a little further depending on your preferences. Possibly just a bit of dry time too, and you're golden!

MacBaren Virginia No. 1
Great tobacco. This was the first Virginia I smoked that I finally understood the complexities of a straight Virginia tobacco. One of my gotos when I am in the mood to smoke a light blend.

Good smoke
Can burn a little hot if you draw on it to quickly, but over all it has flavorful citrusy notes and a good classic tobacco flavor, with hints of hay here and there. I’m going to age it and see what will happen

Nice Change
I stumbled across this here locally where I live so I tried an ounce of it. I am not one who smokes anything but my ‘knowns’. I found this be tasty for lack of a better word. I do not have the sophistication to get into the high notes or low notes or what it tastes like. I either like something or I don’t - it’s that simple. I primarily smoke virginia perique tobaccos and nothing else. Smoke it slow and purposeful and you might find you like it. I did and bought a pound of it and will keep it on hand.

I can't figure this one out
A good tobacco which I'm almost compelled (don't know why) to smoke from time to time. All the good things have been said so my two cents are limited to two issues. First and foremost, I'm not getting the sweetness I expected. This applies to the bulk, not the tin. The problem here is obvious-cost. The second issue is tongue bite. As a piper for over 50 years, you can believe I know what this curse feels like. But I've yet to be bitten by VA #1. I know I'll continue to smoke it, but will stick to the tin version. I urge the reader that this problem may be a strictly personal one and may not exist for all smokers. There may well be no difference between bulk and tin.

Excellent flavor, but burns hot
This is another fine Virginia, with truly exceptional flavor, in my newbie's opinion, but after just a few tries so far, i am finding that it burns very hot and fast, w thick smoke -- and this kills the enjoyment of course. Finding that I like the "flake cut" pressed Virginias because they allow more O2 into the pipe, still burn slower and more evenly, and thus produce a cooler, thinner, more constantly enjoyable smoke. McBaren is reliable with pressed flake tobaccos like this. i will try mixing this Virginia No. ! with some pressed flake and hope for a better smoke ...

Great smoke
Really enjoyed this smoke. Very smooth. Aroma was good i was told by my wife. She enjoyed it a lot. I would order this again. Smoked great in my pipe, flavor was outstanding.

This has been my go-to tobacco for quite some time.
I’m not sure if my palette changes or if the batches become inconsistent over time. I’m comfortable trying new things from pipes and cigars website though. Seems to be a fast and reliable company.

SMOOOTH!
Very mild, straight forward, no nonsense tobacco. Good as soon as you get it. Even better if you can let it get a 2-3 years, or more, of age on it.

All around good smoke...
Packs well, lights pretty easily, develops good flavor about 1/3 down, stays lit easily. Puffing will overheat things so take it easy and enjoy the mild but sweet flavor. Nice big tin fits in my pipe and tobacco bag and is easy to fill from. Nice nose, nice room note. Gentle, not robust, clean dry burn.

VA no.1
Decent but unremarkable VA. Not much of a tin aroma which carries over to the flavor. However, sometimes a simple VA is what I want and this tobacco fits the bill in that respect.

not like decades ago.
i smoked this often back in 1969 in a corn cob. after you got it lit, a slow draw would bring intense smooth yummy honey flavor into your mouth. it was amazing. Others commented on it too. i bought some a couple years ago and none of the original flavor was found. totally disappointing. i threw the rest away.

Good stuff
A really temperamental tobacco. Has a wonderful scent in the bag, a lightly flavored virginia, with lots of fruity hay-like aspects. It's a delicious smoke, and the virginias become quite spicy and sweet. I could have worn I tasted perique. Either way, it's a little hard to keep going, and burns extremely hot. A few times I'd intentionally let it go out to cool things down. The relight was heaven. Definitely recommended, but not for beginners.

Sweet viginia
Great smoke. I particularly enjoy this midday after lunch. Slightly sweet, just sip it slow and enjoy the flavor. Relax with it. If you puff too hard it will lose it's flavor and sweetness.

A Quality Virginia Blend
A very warm and sweet blend with crisp, bright colored virginias. The virginias in this blend are definitely of high quality. As per most Mac Baren blends, it does give a bit of tongue-bite, but nothing to detract from the smoke. The tin note has a very sweet, almost caramel, and hay-like smell to it. Very delightful and worth a try!

Unique Grassy Flavor
This is my first try as a casual smoker at a "ready rubbed" Virginia. The flavor and aroma were different (in a good way) from any other tobacco I've tried. I found it difficult to pack and keep lit, there must be some technique to it. I will try another Virginia with different cut .

A stitch in time....
I first smoked this blend, in tin presentation, about eight years ago. I remember enjoying the flavor, but fell victim to the dreaded "MacBite"... in retrospect, this was due to my technique and probably wrong choice of pipe. I revisited this tobacco a couple months ago, this time in bulk presentation ordered here, and had a wholly different experience. Bite? Yes, if you push it...if you puff it fast like a cheap drugstore tobacco. But not if you sip it. Especially, to be noted, from a narrower, taller bowl... such as a Missouri Meerschaum Washington or other smaller chambered cob. Then... ... I hadn't even completed the charring light, standing outside the hospital waiting for my son to be seen for his first set of stitches (on his forehead, same place, same number of stitches, same age, as his Dad...)... when THREE different passersby complimented me on the aroma. I had snatched up a cob on the way through the garage for this momentous occasion... I had previously smoked this in briars only. I settled in for a sublime smoke...lightly sweet, grassy, virginia flavor with a touch of honey...truly satisfying! I have since smoked this in a number of different pipes, but have to conclude that it shines at its best in a narrow bore cob. With enought patience and good pacing, this is a rewarding, simple tobacco with a nice room note... but a cob is really where it sings... and brings an encore. If pushed, it will bite... as will almost any Virginia. This would be a three star tobacco for me... but I'll give it four, because it forced me to slow down and mellow out... which has paid off in my exploration of other tobaccos... it was the doorman into another, previously unexplored world. As it has been said elsewhere... a pipe is to be savored. This tobacco drove that point home for me. Downside? There is a heck of a lot of moisture hidden in those broken flakes... proceed with caution. Upside? This is a very nice, sweet smoke. Slow down... enjoy.

Wonderful memories...
Virginia #1 was the only tobacco I smoked, except for occasional forays into English type blends, for over thirty years. I've been through many, many pounds of it, tin,, bagged, and bulk. The past few years I've let it slip aside as I went for stronger, mostly darker tobaccos. Usually in the Mac Baren HH series. Recently, I pulled out a tin I had on the bottom of my stack; it was a real trip down amnesia lane! Immediately ordered up some bulk. Over the years it has been consistently excellent. Rarely too dry or too moist, packs well, burns evenly and stays lit. A great all day, everyday tobacco. I doubt it will replace my new found love of other types, but it will most certainly return to my regular rotation. I've yet to meet anyone that didn't like the room note. It has my hearty recommendation. df in Fort Collins, CO.

Not bad, not great either. It's smooth and cool smoking but not very flavorful. Kind of bland in my opinion. There are better virginias out there.

Aquired Taste....not for me
A little Harsh for my taste.... smelled like fresh cut grass....to some that's pleasing.... not a selection I'd make again. There are many other Tobaccos here that I prefer....smother more aromatic, with a softer room note.....

my first Virginia
moisture level very good, burns easy, garage note (wife does not like smoke in house) mellow, might buy wife gas mask for Xmas. Golden Extra is favorite, but does not taste the same as back in the 70's,so I'm going to add a pinch or two of the Virginia to see if that brings back the flavor that got me hooked on pipes.

Customer Testimonials
Good mild tobacco. Don't pack too tightly or smoke it too fast or else it will bite.

Aromatic? Good stuff nonetheless.
MJ of Helena, AL
I received this blend in bulk form. The aroma is similar to hay but with a touch of sweetness. It packs easily enough, i used a 2 step frank method. The flavor is very mild, but you can pick up notes of subtle sweetness. It doesn't scream rotation but it's a good mild smoke, probably in the yard or garden. It is fairly easy to keep lit but smoke it slow because it can heat up. The body is smooth and light with a creamy texture. Id give it a 2.5 out of 5. My wife says the room note is similar to fresh sawdust.
