MATCH Argosy

This is a match to the original House of Windsor Argosy Black, a particularly unique straight black Cavendish. This blend is made of softly steamed black Cavendish made from select Burleys, with a singular combination of vanilla flavors for a smoothly aromatic experience. If your tastes run to smooth and softly-sweet aromatics, you'll find MATCH - Argosy a great choice.

This is a Keeper
I'm not great at describing tobaccos, but I was pleased with this one. I let it age in the bag for about 4 months after it arrived, and when I opened it, there was not much nose scent. It was a little dry out of the bag (due to leaving it for 4 months), but I mixed it in about half and half with one of my personal blends, and it definitely improved it. Some of the other reviewers mention vanilla, and I think I detected some, but I also detected some nuttiness. Also, unlike most black Cavendish I have tried, it was not so mild that it rendered my blend too bland; it actually added some body and flavor while being smooth without a bite. It has a deep, dark flavor that is very satisfying. After re-hydrating, it did have a slightly spicy 'tin note' from the bag; it was also it bit spicier in the pipe. I recommend ordering a few ounces and adding a pinch or two to one of your favorite blends to see how it improves it. Then you might want to add more. it has improved my blends.

Argosy Black Match
It is a somewhat ok tobacco, It is not the flavor and odor I remember from 30 years ago, The argosy Black was very distinct tobacco and one would never forget it

Good Stuff!!
Pretty much as I remember it. Nice smoke, full rich flavor, burns evenly. As when my dad introduced me to the original some 35 or so years ago, I'll probably experiment a little and mix it with some Lane Ltd. Very Cherry. Will definitely buy more, maybe put some away to age a bit, and use in rotation with the other Black Cavendish blends I like.

Dissapointded
It has been a high number of years since I had the original, so it is hard to judge. I really liked the original, but this is not it. This arrived in 2 days which is a plus for P & C, however this was very dry, had no bag aroma & little vanilla taste. Most of the match blends are good, but this one was not. I think Sutliff has a couple of bulk blends that are a much better match.

Burns too quickly.
Nice flavor, nice aroma with a vanilla note, but, for me it burns too fast. I find that I am reloading my pipe too often.

good stuff
This is as close to the original as I can find. Which is what I started smoking a pipe for in the first place 35 years ago. Love the mild taste, low " bite" quotient, and the aroma is great.

A shadow of the original
I have some original Argosy Black, and a friend and I did the comparison. The Argosy Black original has a very strong, pleasant vanilla smell when you open the pouch. The match had almost no smell. The original has that vanilla that you can smell and taste when you exhale. The match doesn't. They both burn well, and the match wasn't bad as just a smoke. But in comparing it to the original, it is a mere shadow, and was a disappointment. There are those who think the original was too aromatic, too black, too everything. If that is you, then you might like this Match.

Match Argosy is definitely the bottom of the...bowl!
Everyone has quirks in their pipe world. For an everyday smoke, I've settled on packing the bottom of the bowl with Match Argosy and the top half with a mix of Match Bourbon St/Hines. Bit of a Windsor fan. By the time I get to the Argosy layer, the room notes swell into a symphony! Plus, one cannot argue either the price for Match tobacco or PnS's service.
