MATCH Flying Dutchman

This is a match to the old Flying Dutchman, made by Theodorus Niemeyer . Good
Good Blend. To anyone taste testing tobaccos.....take it SLOW! Don't just smoke 1 pipe full and say or think you don't like it. You have to smoke 4-5 bowls. Try with and without filters. Try in the morning, afternoon and evening. Sip at the pipe. Don't Choo Choo away at it. Take a sip of your favorite beverage after every couple hits to clean your pallete. IMO most tobaccos don't taste great the first time you smoke them. Takes you, your taste buds and your brain some time to think about and realize what you are tasting. Only then can you appreciate the tobacco and decide Yay or Nay on wether you like or enjoy it. It never will happen with the first bowl or 1 bowl! I realized this early on as I bought all the tobaccos my pap smoked. Half&Half, Carter Hall, Prince Albert, SWR, Five Brothers. I sat down and smoked a bowl of each and all I could think was this stuff is HORRIBLE and what was my pap thinking. So I got online and researched Aros and English blends. Ordered about 30 of the top rated kinds. They show up in the mail and I began to try a pipe of each. Again as I'm going I'm thinking OMG all this stuff is just as bad as the American Blends! Even worse! After I'd tried them all....I had no choice but to try some for a second time. That's where things changed for me. As I did so I started to realize hey maybe this one isn't so bad after all. Then I tried it a 3rd 4th 5th time. Every time they became better and better tasting. Going back to the original American Blends I mentioned. As I tried them again I realized those are what I liked best. Your not gonna like all tobaccos. I'd say I LIKE 20% of them and LOVE 5% of them. But now I can Appreciate 100% of them!

A great all day amoke
Flying Dutchman...not the Dutchmen i remember from days gone by.....however....very smooth, little to no bite. Very pleasing and not over powering to take center stage about all else in the room. I use this as an all day smoke and am very happy with it. I find with the order i had made on this....right from the bag with no air time for drying as many require.....this one, properly tamped.....the full bowl may need a re-light once....maybe. have found that after the first light up, take a couple puffs, let it go out. Then....tamp lightly, re-light and your on your way. The only 2 problems i have found with this smoke.....the bowl is never big enough to hold for the length of time you will want to smoke it. The second problem....minor....may have to change your filters a bit more often and keep the pipe clean !

Flying Dutchman, smooth sailing.
Growing up in thru 60,,s I smoked this about 1967 f&s was my favorite then fd & ch burly blends is about it some drug stores had some China black, so I feel in love with burly blends. Upon receiving my order opening it was the classic flying dutch man, after a few bowls full in my vintage briar pipes taste flavor ,room note lite vanilla, an a hint of sweet note wife loves it. If you want to experience we old codgers smoked buy a lightly smoked vintage briar pipe. Ebay great place to shop try some flying Dutchman. AND KICK BACK AND RELAX IN THE MOMENT. Rb

A quite close blending
Years ago I smoked Flying Dutchman as my main tobacco. In later years I moved away from my pipe to cigars and only in the past two years am I returning to my old pipes. To my dismay I find huge changes in the pipe tobacco landscape. Many blends I knew before are no longer sold along with my Flying Dutchman. I was hopeful when I saw that P&C were marketing a, I guess, reenactment. I tried it and it is very close to the original. However I have found a new love in Lane's Dark Red and will not be going to the 'new' Flying Dutchman. Try it though if you used to smoke the blend.

Great start to the day
One of my all time favorite tobaccos. Takes a while to learn the best moisture content, but once you have that down the Flying Dutchman really has an awesome flavor and burns so nicely. I first smoked this wonderful blend back in “73” and am so pleased with the match blend. I can’t help but in-hail the wonderful smoke that it produces. It really gets me flying. Who ever mixed this match did a fantastic job. My hat is off to you sir. Did I mention that I am now 65 years old. The flavor does take me back to the “70”s. Keep up the good work. A slight licorice flavor would be a nice add in. Please try that.

Not bad but I do get a bit of tongue bite from this. It’s been over 50 years since I last smoked the original FD in college so I can’t really compare this with the original.

Memories of childhood
I remember this being smoked by friends of the family back in the 70s when I was a kid. This stuff has the exact same room note I remember and smokes well without the bite of the original as others have mentioned. Bonus star for being girlfriend approved as an indoor smoke.

Awesome stuff.
Never believed I would ever smoke my beloved Flying Dutchman again but Match sure pulled it off. Too close to believe it was not the original. Thanks P&T!

Codger Approved!
What a wonderful codger blend! I've been pipe smoking for 40 years, and this is great. A wonderful tin note highlights the blend beautifully. Easy and tasty smoke. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to try a burley blend of the past days. Great job on the match

Good price and good tobacco. When I first started smoking a pipe, Flying Dutchman was my favorite. Glad I found a match.

Very, very, close!
Way to go P&C. Though I don't think this is a perfect match, it's as close as you are going to get with today's tobaccos. I used to use Flying Dutchman as rolling tobacco when I wanted a break from my red & white boxed factory made's. Some professors allowed smoking in the class room back then, and loved the aroma(as did class mates). I started smoking a pipe later in life after I gave up cigarettes, and have been looking for a good match for a long time. I have come close a few times with my own blends, but have fallen short. Thanks. Will order more.

My new favorite!
Reminds me of the original, very smooth, not at all harsh in my vintage "THE PIPE" and reminds me of the 70's!

FLYING DUTCHMAN BLEND
This is an all day blend that is pleasantly mild on the tongue with no bite and mild flavor. At first, the tobacco seemed much dryer than most aromatics, but easily packs and is as mild as any I’ve smoked.

Flying Dutchman Match
Flying Dutchman Match, it is close to the original but lacks the full flavor and the aroma of the original Flying Dutchman. I suspect it is very hard to make a match with what is available today for the blenders. I started out in 65 smoking the original. My father always smoked it and I can remember my mother always set close to him when he did. The aroma was wonderful. He had mastered Flying Dutchman and taught me how to smoke it with out the burn. I still have six ounce of the original Flying Dutchman in a jar that I use on special occasions. My wife loves the aroma of it, and states the matches that I have tried, do not measure up to the original. I have heard that CCC makes a match that is very close, I have yet to try it because they can not ship to the state I live in. Will work on that.

Aye The Flight o the Dutchman
Aye, I waited to place this review until I smoked a large nuff sample, so aft an ounce consumed here we go... The Flying Dutchman was one of the first tinned tobacco’s I smoked in the 70’s. Upon opening the bag, I bought 4oz, the aroma was wonderful. It has a light, sweet smell to it. The cut follows the original in the ribbons and cube. One main difference is the colour. The main memory I have is that the original held a lighter colour, not having any experience back in the ‘70’s. Now in thinking it may have had more oriental back then. Today’s blend looks like it has some black Cavendish instead. On first light the plumes of smoke were thick and tasty. It’s mild, with an even flavor all the way though to just over the bottom. The smoke gets a little wet about the half way mark. Just keep a pipe cleaner hand to keep dry. For a comparison to the original I’d have to say it stands alone. They are different and the same. Forty plus years is a long time to attempt a comparison between tobaccos. This is good enough on its own merits to be an enjoyable all day smoke. Buy it and see if you would agree.

a good tobacco - much better than the original
I smoked a pipe in the 60s and loved the taste of this tobacco but couldn't smoke it because it scorched my mouth. This match blend is very good - not quite triumphant but good quality. The pouch note is almost herbal, slightly vanilla. The flavor is distinctly Danish mild aromatic. No nic-hit worth mentioning. I like mild tobaccos and don't like nicotine so this one works for me.

Lite sipper
Tried out two ounces of this. Never had the original so no idea how it compares. Found this to be a lite and wispy smoke. Seemed to respond best sipped in a cob. Not bad. Has some teeth if pushed. Mild vanilla like taste. Holds its flavor throughout the bowl. Reminded a bit of captain black lite but with a bit more substance.

Mild, smooth smoke, but not
Mild, smooth smoke, but not enough character to be stand-alone; great mixture with more expensive blends.

My new favorite
Really a lovely mellow smoke. Better in all ways than the original I remember fondly from the 1960s. This is not as fine a ribbon cut as the original, but burns better and just as satisfying.

Not A Dead Ringer But Quite Nice!
Well my memory of Flying Dutchman is 30 years old, so take this with a small grain of salt but I think it was cut differently, unlike another reviewer's memory of Flying Dutchman I remember it being a thinner ribbon cut or even a "shag" cut whereas the MATCH FD is somewhat more coarse and I don't it's think is a dead ringer for the flavor either. With that said however, this is a very nice aromatic that isn't too heavily cased and still tastes like tobacco. I've pretty much been smoking English/Balkan non aromatic blends for quite a while now and I can't really enjoy most of the goopy, heavy aromatics on the market today, this however is a pretty good one and I'll probably re-order this blend to serve as a change of pace from my usual English/Balkan blends.

Almost made it
The cut and top note flavor did not match that of what little I have of my remaining original blend. I was a bit disappointed. On its own, it is a pleasant smoke.

Not bad
Pretty solid tobacco. Starts off simple but then gets more complex as you smoke it. I could see it as an all day smoke for some, but is missing a little something to keep me interested. Probably won't be buying again.

I haven't smoked Flying Dutchman in decades. The match, to me, did not come close to the original. Not a bad smoke but not like Flying Dutchman.

Dutchman Flying Again
It has been so many years since I was able to buy the original Dutchman that I can't say for sure that this an exact match. However, it does jog my memory as being very close and seems to have both the flavor and aroma of the original pretty well covered. I smoked a lot of Dutchman at the time and used it as a break-in and caking tobacco for new pipes because of its subtle sweet flavor and excellent caking properties. One advantage of this tobacco is that it has none of the original's bite. Dutchman would get extremely hot and bite if it wasn't smoked very slowly thanks to its very fine cut. This is becoming one of my regular rotation tobaccos and I'm enjoying both the tobacco and the memories that it has reminded me of. Now that I've found it, I hope it stays available.

Very pleasant, very lightly topped (cocoa chocolate?) aromatic. Pretty much a dead ringer for Prince Albert or Sir Walter Raleigh, but better. Never smoked the original.

I have no idea what the original tobacco was like but I can say that this is one terrific and satisfying smoke. It stays lit, the flavor remains pleasant and consistent. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Challenge.
Dear Russ, I dare you to truly make this blend. As advertised it's 18 different types of tobacco blended together. You are a God compared to me but this is a true challenge. It's the table scraps of one company but yearly acceptable.

The Flying Dutchman still sails
I was lucky enough to try some real Flying Dutchman some years ago and really liked it; then found out it was no longer available, which was a bummer. I found this match and it's pretty darn good. I enjoy it.

Flying Dutchman Replica
I was pleasantly surprised and enjoy the product. Not hot, burns long and smooth, no bite and nice aroma. Similar to the original. I would add a touch more vanilla. I'll buy more.

The Dutchman's Back!
Flying Dutchman was one of my favorite mild, aromatic blends years back. When I came back to pipe smoking several years ago, I was sorry to find that it was no longer available although there are several "matches" available online. The P&G version is a very close match, and a wonderful blend in and of itself. I like to smoke a bowl at the end of my work day. I find it a powerful comfort that helps me think.

Match Flying Dutchman
I ordered two different 15 ounce shipments, and they tasted totally different. The first shipment was the best, by comparison to the second shipment---which was very bland, tasteless and lacked the aroma of the first shipment. Then I found out through Customer Service that you "purchase" this tobacco already blended from another vendor, and don't actually blend it "in-house". If you did, you would have better quality control and probably much better consistency of the blend, by your Master Blender.

Not exactly a match. The taste is close and aroma about the same. Overall a great tobacco for the price !

Having never tried the original
Having never tried the original Flying Dutchman, I don't know how this compares. I will say however that this match was a relaxing smoke, stayed lit, and burned somewhat cool as long as I paced myself.

Match Flying Dutchman
It has been decades since i smoked the original. This seemed close to the previous version. I liked it.
Customer Testimonials
Like many other pipe smokers, I had a love affair with Flying Dutchman back in the day, so I was looking forward to trying the Match version. Unfortunately, other than the quick and light smoke, there was nothing in this blend that reminded me of the good old stuff. The lack of the famous Flying Dutchman aroma was the biggest disappointment. The good old stuff used to linger on the moustache for hours!
JB of New Castle, PA
I love this tobacco. Tastes great and burns well. I have ordered this twice now and will certainly order again.
JE of Cardwell, MO
I am really tired of the bad rep that FD has been getting. FD has been around for a LONG time and is still sought out so maybe you should reevaluate your opinion. FD is a very thin ribbon cut blend that packs easily, lights easily, and burns very easily. If you smoke it SLOWLY it will not only taste better but WILL NOT BURN YOU!. If it was really so bad then it would not still be around after 75 years! So try it again and this time SLOW DOWN from your hectic life, get away from your computer, put down the cell phone and enjoy a classic.
JF of Lubbock, TX
Not the Dutchman, but a good smoke. Mild,no bite, burns to a white ash.Although it didn t match, I think I'll try EMP and compare to the real EMP in my english rotation. GB
