MATCH Victorian Pipe Tobacco

This is a match to Peterson's Elizabethan Mixture. A variety of sweet Virginias are pressed and slightly darkened, then tumbled into a ribbon-cut, which are then blended with fine Louisiana Perique for a piquant flavor. Peterson fans may want a more affordable version of Elizabethan Mixture, but MATCH Victorian Pipe Tobacco, and at a very comfortable price.

Good on it's own without comparisons
First this is not an exact flavor match to PA. I keep a tub of PA and will never stop buying it as long as it is available. I have smoked this back to back with PA and it isn't a match though the burley flavor is obvious in both. That doesn't mean this stuff isn't a good smoke. I pick up a little cigar like background flavor to this and I do like it. It also seems to have a little more nicotine than PA, which is a good thing. So not a match, but very nice and I plan to keep ordering it. If you are a burley smoker, I think you would like it.

It's a good mild smoke,
It's a good mild smoke, but I think I prefer Cornell and Diehl Haunted Bookshop. I've smoked about half a pound of this, and have about the same amount stored in small mason jars. I'll definitely revisit it in the future!

I've used it for years.
I've used it for years. Recently it seems to contain more stems and unsmokeable clumps. Still like it tho.

Pretty good blend by itself
I haven't tried the blend this was supposed to replicate, so I can't make any comparisons. However, I find this is a decent standalone blend that has good flavor. Overall, I have no complaints about it.

A Match it is not
This is not a bad blend. But the description to me is off. This taste nothing like "Peterson's Elizabethan Mixture" at all to me. I know P&C has a Sutcliff section, which makes a "Murry's Elizabethan Mixture" Match, but they have this under Match "Alternative's" and not Sutcliff. So I took it to mean a different blender. In that respect I am disappointed. But in any case, it is not a bad blend. Purchased eight ounces on sale. The aroma of the bag is pure Cocoa, chocolate and nothing else. The tobacco was a bit wet for me and needs drying time. The Cocoa is up front and present at first light. It then fades to a condiment in the background but always present. The sweetness takes over with dark fruits present. Plums and Figs with a sweet topping. In a moments notice the mild spiciness of perique shows up and subdues the sweetness a bit. A little bit of citrus and lemony flavor jumps on board to round out the party of flavors, while an odd sour note will jump up ever so often like a gate crasher and then fades quickly. Over all a tasty blend, but no Match to "Peterson's Elizabethan Mixture".

Plain good tobacco, clear and simple.
This was the first time I tried a MATCH blend, and I'm happy to say that this is just a plain good tobacco. I like it. I never did get to try Elizabethan before this, so I have nothing to compare it to. But it's really good.

Full Flavored
I was impressed with the complexity of this blend despite it having a mild-nic hit. This has become an all day blend for me.

“Love at first PUFF “
I am a new pipe smoker , I have been experimenting a lot with all kind blends , some take a wile for me to come around , but this one , was love at first puff, what different flavor , it is very mellow , no tong bite , reminded me of fresh cooked bread but also very leafy , can’t described very well , but this I will be ordering more for sure

A Fine Everyday Smoke
I've been a fan of Virginia/Perique (Va/per) blends for probably going on a decade, now. And Match Elizabethan has become my everyday favorite. It burns evenly, needs few relights, and most of all, has that grassy aroma of the Virginia mingled with the dried fruitiness of the Perique in the humidor. Alight, the fragrance is sweet, but not cloying. If you're looking for something different, Match Elizabethan is an excellent alternative to aromatic blends, and English/Balkan blends. Give it a try.

If I had to choose only one!
Love the flavor, the hints of raisins and spicy from the perique. The ripe Virginia is smooth and fresh like a dry grassy meadow after the first rains. Thank you for my favorite natural pipe tobacco.
