MATCH Walnut

Walnut was a classic American-style English blend made of  nutty Burley, delicate Virginias, rich Kentucky, mellow Maryland, earthy Turkish and smoky Cyprian Latakia. It dated back to the 1800s, but recently vanished. The legacy of this all-day type of blend lives on with MATCH - Walnut, and we're sure you'll enjoy this classic American English blend.

MATCH Walnut
99% spot on match for the original Walnut, which we all miss very much. Tastes and smells like the original. This and P&Cs Chestnut I believe are the same product and both are very, very good. If you liked and miss Walnut, give either a try. If you want to try what a great American blend was like, this is it.

Walnut match
I liked the original walnut and this is pretty close. I'll be ordering more

I like it
A bit more refined, but along the lines of S.Value English pouch. About as far English as I care for. Wife calls it "slim jim", so, room note is beef jerky basically. Tastes like smoking SWR with one single M&M melted in your mouth, downwind from someone burning fresh pine branches. It's actually quite good. It's been so long since I had Walnut I can't comment on similarity, although I know I didn't like it. like smoking cedar shavings. This MATCH seems to be sweeter, and more melded. I'll get more.

Yes! It is so close
Yes! It is so close to the original Walnut American English blend that I could barely notice a difference as I smoked them side by side. The tobacconist did a remarkable job and I could not have been happier. I immediately purchased a pound of the Match Walnut and felt comfortable finishing off my last can of the the original because now I have a replacement.

An Excellent Blend!
With the number of tobacco components there are in this blend, I thought it was going to be a confusing flavor free-for-all. Instead, I was gifted with a mellow smoke where everything just worked together well. It is one of my favorites.

Nice ...the right balance of
Nice ...the right balance of latakia and the other components which provide natural tobacco flavors. Easy on the tongue which is always a determinant factor for me.

Good American English
This is a good American English blend. I tried the original many years ago (back in the mid-60's if memory serves me right). I don't remember what it tasted like but I know I liked it. This match blend satisfies my Latakia cravings without breaking the bank. To me it is a smooth tasty blend with no tongue bite. A sophisticated blend that can easily be smoked all day but I like to save it for the evenings. I will be ordering more.

As close to the original as I can remember
My memory of the original Walnut may have faded , but as far as I can remember the Match blend is close !!! Either way I enjoy it and really that's all that matters in the end .. if you look like light aromatics ? Then you may like match Walnut . there isn't a Walnut flavoring , the name "Walnut " comes from a street in Philadelphia . The blend Is made with Burly , Cavendish, latakia , Maryland, Oriental/Turkish and Virginias really I can't detect the Orientals ,but the Latakia is in the at times . Mostly I taste the nutty Burly and grassy Virginias and some kinda casing / topping , could never quite put my finger on it . But I like it !!!

Outstanding Smoke
This is very similar to the original Walnut. I've still got two unopened cans of the original and have been searching for a clone of it. The Match Walnut comes very close. While it lacks the hint of cinnamon and some of the subtle nuances of the original Walnut blend, it is a very close match and I'm sold on it. If you like the American version of the English blend this does it nicely and keeps the latakia in check so it's not overwhelming.

Good Choice
I've smoked original Walnut but too long ago to compare with match blend, but I enjoyed the match. Will smoke match again. English flavor comes across well. Not quite as pronounced as University Prof., but will order U.P. again, even though its availability is sketchy.

Walnut match
Close to original but seems to be missing something.

Not bad
I liked it somewhat but it really wasn't really what I expected .

Great stuff!
Tire smell slight? Yes, inside the bag too, but none of the cinnamon. Some sweetness along with the small smokiness and faint tire smell of the Latakia. ] Nice blended Virginias with some sweetness and yellow hay come through immediately. A little vanillish - is there black cavendish in here? (Apparently so, I had not expected it :) Ah, there is a bit of Latakia floating some smoke faintly over the top, very lightly. Sweetness ping-pongs around with slight grass notes while the burley/cavendish buzzing around seems to take overall dominance most of the time, just barely. A little nut at the back of the tongue some. Additionally, faint traces of Kentucky add a little tingle and trace of wood with the Turkish. Really get some afterglow of the Kentucky in the back of the nose just retrohaling out of the throat with no smoke. I do not know what Maryland is yet to have noticed it, if it is in there. I will have to research on that to come back and see if there is any detectable. There is also a faint Latakia in the blend in the background for me. Pretty interesting blend, sweet, and enjoyable. Interestingly, seems when bowl is very cool, I get more Virginia, when heated up more of the Cavendish and sweetness plays up. Zero management issues really. Burns pretty cool and very even keel. I did grow some real heat in the bowl when freight training it, but it is an instant relight if you make the mistake of letting it cool until out. Smelts down to a nice fine ash without a moisture issue. This could be an easy pick up for any time of day, or all day. Good stuff!

Not sure if it's a match, but I enjoy it.
I have smoked the original and seem to remember a walnut-like smell to it. Due to ever-limiting broadband capability as well as encroaching senility, I can only say "seem to remember." Be that is it may, I was intrigued by what I read about Chestnut but did not want gamble on a whole jar. So I went for the Match Blend even knowing that a different blender was involved, and with the exception of Barking Dog, have only so-so results with these blend knock-offs My first whiff told me that "this could be the start of something big." It is an american style English which could be an all day smoke. For me it has become a favorite after dinner, two bowl smoke. This is due to the Latakia which I enjoy at the day's end. I do recommend this blend and feel that for the cost of a couple of ounces, it is worth a try.

Match walnut tobacco
A wonderful English blend with a nice walnut finish. Very earthy, I believe I've found a new favorite tobacco

A good one...
May not be like the original...don't know, never had it. But dang, this stuff is pretty good. Sweet, sour, tangy, spicy, nutty, earthy, and smokey...what's not to like? By far the best bulk blend I've ever tried, will buy and smoke plenty more.

I will take this blend forsaking all others, till the end of time. I've tried hundreds of English blends, but this one rings all the bells. I pity non-smokers when I'm filling my bowl with Walnut. As my excitement grows while I'm anticipating my first draw, I fleeting wonder how empty life must be for someone who has never enjoyed a great pipe tobacco.

Not a Match/Middleton comparison
If you are looking for a comparison to Middleton's Walnut, this is not the review for you. This is simply a review on Match Walnut. You see, I never had the chance to smoke Middleton Walnut. Apparently it was a pleasing smoke that many people enjoyed. I have never been into English blends much, but I decided to give this a try. I am glad I did. I really did enjoy this blend, and I would be willing to order more to keep in a jar. It is not overwhelmingly smoky like some English blends. It is what is described as an American English blend. I am fine with that. The oriental tobacco mixes wonderfully with the burley. If you are curious to give this a try, I suggest you at least try it. If you are familiar with Middleton Walnut, you might be disappointed or you might be surprised. All I know that is that I highly enjoyed this from first light down to final puff.

Rating should be higher
I have never had the original, so can not compare, but I have stocked up on this as it is absolutely delicious and should be scoring higher. I wrote a much longer review while smoking this and will need to see if that actually gets posted. If not, I'll rewrite as close as I can to that original description from last week.

Like smoking the oak leaves from the backyard! Glad I only bought a little. Will try to blend it with ... something.

Quite enjoyable! It compares to many English blends, which makes me happy!

Match Walnut a good blend
Well I would have tried Walnut long ago if I knew it was basically an American English, burley and Latakia, a good fairly mild smoke and not too heavy on Latakia (like salt u don't need much)

Not Walnut...
When I first heard that Middleton's Walnut was being discontinued, I was disappointed to say the least. When I saw that someone was going to try to match it, I was hopeful. But this ain't it. I wonder if the blender had even looked at or tasted the real thing. While the real walnut was a coarse, dense cut tobacco, this 'match' is mainly a ribbony, light cut. While the real is mainly a burly with just hints of the other tobaccos, this has an overpowering oriental flavor. While it's not a 'bad' blend per se, it's just not the Walnut that I was hoping to find.
Customer Testimonials
I never smoked the original so I can not compare. Latakia is enough to enjoy but not overwhelming. I had to smoke a couple of ounces before the other tobaccos started coming through. Has become one of the blends I prefer at night but it's also a good all day smoke for me. I will order more of this.
