McClelland No. 2035 Dark Navy Flake

This item is no longer available for purchase.

2035 Dark Navy Flake is made of different primings of bright yellow flue-cured leaf that is pressed, heated and matured until the resulting cake is converted to dark brown and black tones. It's then sliced into flakes. The tobacco has much of the natural sweetness of Virginia but is made mellower and deeper because of its processing.

meh
To each his own. I like V's and Va-Pers. McClelland 2015 is awesome. this one hasnt done it for me. the flavor feels monochromatic and uncomplex. But Im not a fan of Nightcap either for the same reason and it has legions of fans, so...if you like complexity and subtlety in a dynamic yet relaxing smoke, wrong place to look. if you like punch and strength--youll get it here. Going to jar it and see in a few months.

Great smoke
2035 Dark Navy Flake is a great smoke which manages to be very rich tasting and mild at the same time. It is a very dense flake and somewhat moist, so I typically rub out a little bit to put on top so that it is easier to light. If you like rich Virginia flakes, this is a must-try! Also, it is a great value compared to some similar blends.

For flake fans for sure
This reminds me of a great autumn day. Grassy, leaves on the ground, the first fireplace and a touch of spice. Excellent tobacco, smokes for ages and tastes great.

Pretty dang good!
This is an excellent flake tobacco. Mild flavor, but in a good way. I'd have gave this one five stars, but held back one star, on account of the moisture level, and the difficulty in getting it lit. Once you get this stuff going, it's quite sublime. I will definitely be ordering more of this one...

Invitingly Sweet
Satisfying most definitely. I agree it's on the sweet side however, if you're like me you have a endless supply of blends and tobaccos, to me it's wonderful to have on hand for that nice pungent, yet invitingly sweet version of a Navy Flake. Good show!

A Bit Too Compressed, Hard To Rub Out, And Lacks The Sweet Tang
I am fairly new to the Pipe, and have recently tried several of the McClelland Virginia Flake tobaccos. My first impressions of this one are that it comes a little too compressed and not at all easy to rub out. My limited experience with Virginia flake tobacco has me loving the delicious tangy sweetness of Virginia tobacco, but Dark Navy does not have that. To a more experienced pipe smoker there may be certain nuances to this flake that are appreciated and loved, but at least at this early stage, I can not say that.

I prefer a lighter navy flake
Just not the navy flake for me. Different, probably great if it's up your alley, too harsh and sweet for me.

My two favorite tobaccos are
My two favorite tobaccos are Mclelland's Dark Star and Dark Navy Flake. Both are rich, full-flavored, naturally sweet Virginias, smooth, satisfying and well worth the price. The only improvement would be making Dark Star available in bulk.

Best Navy Tobacco I've Tried
McClelland Navy Flake #2035 bulk is a really dark tobacco. I've tried a couple other brands and didn't like them, so I figured Navy wasn't for me. I tried a 1oz sample of the #2035 and was amazed at the really good flavor. More Virginia sweetness and smoother on the tongue than any other Navy. Well I found out I do like this Navy, and bought more of it on my recent order from Pipes and Cigars. It smokes really well if I dry it out before lighting it, otherwise it's a little hard to keep lit. The flavor is a nice deep Virgina type sweetness.

Dark Navy bliss
I have always loved the taste of this tobacco. I tried it in 98 and have gone back to it ever since. Yes its a little hard to light and can be a bear to keep lit but the rewards are paid back a thousand fold. If you enjoy the tang of McClelland than give this a try. The rich blue smoke from this beauty will be one you will remember for ages.

Don't skip this Navy Flake!
This last summer, I bought an ounce of 8 different navy flakes to try, as I wanted to get a good feel for what a navy flake should taste like, but also so I could start buying and storing my top one or two favorites. There was one or two that I absolutely did not like, but the majority of them were pretty good. This one, however, was by far my favorite navy flake. None of the others were even close. This tobacco is smooth throughout the entire bowl, but has a richness to it that keeps it interesting. It reminds me of a smooth scotch with a resin/caramel flavor profile that I enjoy. In fact, I've started pairing this tobacco with a dram of some of my favorite whiskies. If you like navy flakes, and want something with a bit more complexity, this is the tobacco for you.
Customer Testimonials
This is a really sublime smoke. The flavor is just delicious. You can rub out the rubbery chunks or pack them in like hunks of coal. Its a milder smoke than a straight virginia and very rewarding. Worth trying if you like natural tobacco.

This is a nice dark flake, milder for a darker flake with a fairly complex body to it, the lemon really shines in this one. It's a little moist out of the jar. Not the easiest to rub out unless you are patient and let it dry. This would make for a nice mid day smoke after a meal or while reading a book. I found it smoked best in a medium size bowl. Isn't in my daily rotation but I'd definitely keep a few oz's in my cellar for a change of pace.
