There will never be another like it.
If it was still available I would buy it by the pound. Great to blend with or have neat. Just a wonderful leaf.

Mild, tasty, great aroma, no bite

Great and simple
I've been smoking 5100 on and off for the last 5 years. When fresh it is sweet zesty and can bite if not careful. With age the zesty flavor drops off, the sweetness tones down but the blend gets very creamy. Definitely worth buying. I find McClellands has the best Virginas of them all. Great with tea or coffee

Have your cake and smoke it too.
This is phenomenal, I enjoy it just as it i or I can use it in other blends to make adjustments if needed. This is my go to Virginia when I want a simple straight forward sweet Red Virginia. I would not pass up the chance to try this if you haven't had it. I bet you it is probably out of stock its so good.

Can Definitely Recommend
I really enjoy McC. 5100 this is a naturally sweet Red Virginia that smokes really smooth, IMHO. It can get hot if rushed but just sipping it is really nice. I do let it dry out for at least 15 minutes before packing but the cut is perfect for a small, medium or large bowl. I have even used this to mix with other blends for a change of pace. Of course it has the classic McC tin note, which I like. In my opinion this is the perfect blend to have in your rotation if you like Red Virginia.

Toasty, Not Fruity
A lovely toasted-tasting straight red Va. My first bowl (in a clay pipe) was very satisfying, and it does justice to my briars too. This is something I can easily smoke while working because I get no nicotine hit whatever. It will be a regular with me. Can't wait to mix it with burley!

Toasty, Not Fruity
My first impression, using a clay pipe: excellent! Toasty, tasty, and not fruity. No nicotine hit. This is a daily smoke that can be enjoyed while working.

Amazing.
Absolutely in love with this tobacco. I have been smoking this in the morning with a cup of coffee and its been one of the best tobacco switch ups I have since I found Frog Morton Cellar. Natural sweetness with a little tang or citrus zest as well as a dough-like baked goods taste. It was so good I thought they have had to added a top note to this tobacco but there wasn't and thats one the main reasons why I am writing this review. Pure amazing tobacco.

Satisfaction
Just outstanding. prefer English blends normally, Balkan Sasieni, FM, MM956 but this, this is a well constructed smoke. at times almost a light mahogony?

Liked it
Surprisingly cool for a Virginia. You can smoke it straight, but it's a little bland on its own. I bought it to mix with some dark Kentucky or latikia blends I've mixed up. Definitely improves them. I'll be buying more.

Domenick's Opinion
Excellent. Easy to light, burns properly and has no bite, ever. Great flavor. Slightly sweet, but full bodied An all day smoke and great after dinner. I don't let myself run out of this one.

My favorite tobacco.
I’m not a professional tobacco critic, so I can’t as eloquently describe my experience as one of them can, but this is my favorite tobacco. I have never had a bad experience in any of the 18 pipes I own smoking Red Cake. It’s sweet, has a calming, warm room note. Stays cool in even my most troublesome pipes. It’s the best tobacco, and I always keep a stock.

Sweet, Rich, Mellow
Sweet and rich, easily an all day tobacco. The red Virginia gives a sweetness that is deeper (darker tasting?) than bright Virginias that I like far more. It is sweet and mellow with no bite or harshness. I had an ounce of so of it about a year ago. this time I ordered 5 ounces and will cellar several of them.

Great, relaxing, straight Virginia
I’m getting around to reviewing some of the simpler smokes that I’ve encountered. Five Brothers was my first non-aromatic, straight burley. McClelland 5100 Red Cake was my first straight Virginia leaf blend. In summary, both were good, but in some ways unexciting. Though this description sounds belittling, the unexciting is often what one is looking for in relaxation. Preparation, Smoke: Upon opening, I was a bit disappointed by the tin note. I had missed the notorious “ketchup” descriptor for McClelland Virginias, and was expecting something more in the realm of the common descriptions of Virginia leaf as fruity or grassy. The sassy ketchup aroma really put me off, but I decided to give the smoke a go. In the bag it seemed a bit moist, but smoked without problem. I really don’t have too much problem with most ribbon cut blends even if the moisture is a tad over perfect. Flavor: The ketchup flavor did not really translate to the smoke that I could tell—instead I was able to identify Virginia leaf as the underlying component in the aromatic blends that I enjoyed. (That was part of the idea of ordering some straight burley and straight Virginia blends.) Like Five Brothers, it was a monochromatic smoke, but not in a bad way. There was a rich, sweetness to the smoke—descriptions of “grassy” or “fruity” were more appropriate here, but in comparison to the aromatics that I’d been accustomed to smoking a few months back, this was a muted sweetness. Nicotine level: None detected. Epilogue: This is a very relaxing, straight smoke, but I eventually grew bored of it and mixed it with my Five Brother’s to produce a rum and cinnamon aromatic that turned out quite well. It was a fun experiment flavoring my own tobacco, and I was fortunate in the end result.

Easy Smoking Virginia
McClelland’s 5100 Red Cake is a darker, plummy/raisiny, Virginia, mild to medium is body and taste that offers a solid, bite free smoke. Not much in the grass, hay, citrus department, it is different from a standard Virginia flake. It’s got the standard McClelland ketchup aroma from the tin, but that doesn’t show up in the bowl. If you find the typical Virginia flake to be too trebly and bitey, this might be just the thing for you. If you are new to straight Virginias, this would be an easy intro. What it lacks in strength, it makes up for with a gentle complexity.

Perhaps my favorite tobacco
A very slightly sweet, flavorful tobacco that tastes and smells like tobacco and not some added confection. I like it alone - no bite, burns well - or I'll use it to cut other tobaccos that may have a bit more flavor than I like. Great stuff.

A nice, casual smoke.
For a smoke that's relaxing but not taxing, there's McClelland 5100. As straightforward as a Va can be, with a mellow taste and no surprises. This is an easy all-day smoke and works wonderfully for those moments when your palette craves simplicity. For me, it's one of those blends you always keep on hand.

The Marlboro Man on Steroids
Just great, classic Virginia taste. The smoke is thick, sweet, and rich, almost chocolaty. No bite I could perceive. Mild enough to smoke the live-long day. This is a cornerstone blend from which to judge all other red Virginias. Superb.

Review for other new briar bretheren
As a new pipe smoker and an ex cigarette smoker (10 years ago), I took a lot of online advice as to the McClelland 5100 and tried an ounce of it. If you like cigars I'd say this is probably for you. As a piper who enjoys room note and lots of flavor (I'm admittedly not one of the standard tobacco flavor--I'd just as soon not smoke at all if it doesn't taste really good) this one just isn't for me. Smelled really good in the pouch, tasted like a bad cigar. It's also lot stronger and smokes a lot hotter than others have suggested. Again probably because I'm new. I am hoping this helps other newbies.

Great tobacco!
I was initially turned off by the tin note, which was a strong ketchup aroma--not at all what I was expecting. That said, I didn't find the tobacco to taste like that at all. Instead it was just a nice Virginia flavor that smokes well, with a pleasant room note. I really enjoyed it.

McClelland No. 5100 Red Cake
For anyone that loves Virginia's this is a must try. It is great start to finish and is excellent as a blending agent for other tobacco's. A must add to your rotation and cellar.

#5100 = Awesome Virginia Tobacco
I've been smoking McC 5100 Red Cake for a couple of years. It is one of my favorites. No bite, tastes good in any pipe, and easy smoking. It's usually the one I smoke in the morning, and it's flavorful enough to smoke all day. It comes in a perfect state of dryness for smoking right away. Good stuff!

Perfect alone or as a compliment to other tobaccos
#5100 red cake is really great by the bowlfull. However I have to say my favorite use of this is as a compliment to my other favorite flakes. My morning commute is 35 minutes or so and half of a full bowl or whole flake gets wasted. I have been smoking a half flake of Orlik Golden slice, Deluxe Twist, Navy flake or Bullseye and topping it with a pinch of #5100. It starts each bowl off smooth and transitions cleanly to these folded flakes or coins. It just blends perfectly with all of these virginia based flakes. I'll always have some of this put up and ready to blend on the fly or top off these other fine tobaccos.

Outstanding Tobacco
I can't believe I am the first the first to write a review! I have been smoking this blend for months now and keep reordering it. It’s one of my top five blends. This is a really good blend on its own, but also mixes well with others blends like Peter Stokkebye 6 Sweet Vanilla, Peter Stokkebye 28 Black Majesty and Blending - Dark Fired Kentucky Burley. Take it from a long time pipe smoker try it!
Customer Testimonials
This is my daily Virginia tobacco. I switch between 5100 Red Cake and 2045 Oriental for my morning smoke. 5100 has got that classic VA sweetness, but not overly sweet. Nice and tasty without any bite. This is one of my four favorite pipe tobaccos.

Smoking my first bowl of this wonderful stuff right now. I believe this tobacco was created specifically for me. All the sweetness I like about Virginia leaf, and some darker, richer tastes in there as well. It's my new favorite.
BT of Bryceville, FL
This one has to be in my top 3. It's peppery, almost like a Louisiana hot sauce, vinegary whisper of a note is just plain amazing. Body, room note, strenght, ageing, burn time and temperature all of them feel perfect. On a very personal side note, the first time i gave it a try, instantly i had a remembrance of childhood breakfast, all that creamy, spicy, sweet, tangy flavors under a calm amber light, pretty corny right, but that's just where this blend got allocated in my brain. I've shared a bowl with several people and their reaction is priceless.
MG of CALEXICO, CA
Great tobacco on its own. Wife approved. Also great mixed with Lane 1Q.
AR of Mission Viejo, CA
Great stuff if you like VAs. Not as heady as HH Old Dark Fired but richer than Orlik or Dunhill Flakes.
