Sherlock Holmes routinely smoked a strong shag tobacco, which had a very potent aroma. McClelland's 221-B Series Black Shag is certainly more refined than Holmes' blend. They begin with fine flue-cured tobaccos which are carefully stoved until quite dark and then cut in a fine, easy packing ribbon. The flavor is deep, somewhat sweet and very enjoyable. Because of the cut, it is meant to be smoked slowly.

This quickly became an everyday smoke for me. Great flavor, good burn, runs a bit damp even after drying though. No bite.

This has been smoking great for me so far. Its been a nice smooth smoke without the bite that some of the other tobaccos have. Plus ive been reading Sherlock Holmes stories recently which makes it that much cooler. I will definitely be buying more of this stuff. My father has also been bumming a pinch or two whenever we smoke together. So I can say that he likes it as well.

This is the only "Shag" type tobacco I've ever used on a
regular basis. Not too strong and burns to a fine white
ash. A nice "End Of The Day" smoke.

I should have looked at the customer reviews a bit more carefully. I was under the impression that this was simply a Virginia blend. After smelling it and tasting it, it is clear that it is not. I'm not a big fan of Latakia. I don't mind a bit of it, but I have to be in the right mood for it. When I opened the tin, I immediately noticed the sweet smell, but to be honest, the sweet aroma smelled reminiscent to Teriyaki sauce. One can also taste it. Again, that kind of sweetness just doesn't sit well for me. It might, however, for others.

I fully agree with your staff member. I find this tobacco a very enjoyable smoke. I find it enjoyable enough to make it more than just a once or twice a day smoke. I look foreward to trying the rest of the 221-B series. This is a tobacco that Sherlock would of been proud to have his name associated with. This would of been the tobacco that he would of smoked to get his thoughts in focus.

Outstanding. Reminds me of the good old days. Great aroma upon opening the tin. Get over the shock of it being a bit dry, that's the way it's supposed to be to replicate the way Sherlock bought it and kept stored in a Persian sleeper. The aroma reminds me of Balkan blends. Keep this stuff away from your non pipe smoking buddies, they'll do nothing but complain about the strong room note. Smoke it by yourself so you can enjoy the tangy taste and natural flavor.
