It's perfect for the size
It's perfect for the size that I like for work. I can easily smoke my pipe while my co. Worker smokes 2 cigarettes and it's very portable. I do appreciate it, thank you guys so much.

Bamboo clay pipe.
The pipe looks great, I have 3 other tavern pipes and have wanted to try a bamboo stem. The pipe smoked extremely well, as most clay pipes do with no excessive heat. The simple design of the pipe makes it great for the traditional look.

Wasn’t sure, but jumped anyways….
This is a good old fashioned German clay pipe. It’s on the smaller side which makes it nice for trying new tobaccos. It’s got a fairly rough feel to it and the bowl gets hot fast so holding it by the stem is a must. Also, It is clay, so it will tend dry your lips unless you use something on it. I prefer melting beeswax and then wiping it off while warm so a nice light coat remains. That works great for me and lasts quite a while. Now it is fairly small, but it smokes dry, cleans easily and it’s easy on the wallet, what more could you ask for?

Very nice to look at!
I don't think I can honestly write a serious review since I am still new to smoking the pipe. That's the reason for the rating. But with that I can say that it feels like I am holding a special artifact. I also really like the designs or molding (however you say it). I have not tried to smoke through it yet. It feels so delicate, I am afraid I'm going to break it. It may end up being a showpiece.

Great Pipe
This is a well-made pipe which smokes cool and very clean, revealing the tobacco’s true flavour and character. And the price is great too!

Great little pipe that provides a clean and fast smoke. Price makes it very affordable to have many for different tobaccos so you don’t cross/ghost flavors.

Cool little pipe.
Nice little pipe. It's smaller than I pictured it, about the size of those toy bubble pipes I used to get as a kid. Though it looks very small, it gives about a 45 min smoke. Smokes quite dry and gives a pure tobacco taste. Great for trying new tobaccos or pulling flavors from old favorites.

Great little pipes, good for tasting different tobacco if you've got a good pipe shop near you that has tastings. I like that it is a pure taste of the tobacco without tasting what you're smoking out of

Great clay pipe. I bought it for the size of the bowl which is larger than most other clay pipes. It provides a good smoke

And for the love of God, don't hold it by the bowl!
A nice clay with a bamboo stem. Good for testing, and with a surprisingly deep bowl for when you want to settle in for a long smoke. Fragile, though, like many clays, so be careful.

Worth every penny!
At 5", this is a short pipe with a small bowl and I love it! Clay was the only major pipe making material I hadn't tried before but after doing so, I'm a believer. If you're looking for a good sipper for that robust blend then this may be a good choice! The claw version has ample material to hold on to away from the bowl to avoid heat. I've smoked about a dozen bowls from it so far without issue.

I did not pay attention
I did not pay attention to the length of thr pipe, so it is very short, the mouth piece is sideways to what I am used to, but it is a very good smoking pipe, especially for the money!

Bought my first clay pipe
Bought my first clay pipe maybe a year ago. I’m on my fourth pipe of this size now. Fragile? Yes. Cool, dry smoke and a good value? Also yes.

I like smoking these historically significant pipes. 4 stars because I would have liked them to be slightly longer.

A very ornate and beautiful piece from Germany.
My first Old German Clay Pipe was the Cutty Straight and I absolutely loved it until I accidentally broke it in three pieces but I just ordered a new one that is the hand 19 and the other cutty Straight I had bought for my friend and he had his for a while until somebody broke his which this time I am going to keep it together and hopefully get a good smoking experience like no other pipes I've had.

Nice and rustic
Nice on a cold day because the thin stem cools the smoke. Good if you like clay pipes.

More than just a bang for your buck, a real momento
This is my first real tobacco pipe as a pipe smoker and I'm impressed. I really like the shape of the inside of the bowl and how smooth it feels and looks when it is in my hands. It isn't really that big, but I think it is perfect size for an evening or morning bowl smoke of tobacco. It draws nicely and I noticed that the clay tastes clean paired with a nice pipe tobacco when the pipe is lit. I would highly recommend one of these for a beginner or traveler who does not want to pack an expensive pipe on a trip.

Good clean smoke
Not only is this pipe esthetically pleasing, but it smokes clean and doesn’t get cashed out as quickly as other pipes.

These clay pipes are my favorite pipes. They smoke clean leaving only fully burnt ash in the bowl. The perfect Sunday afternoon is Presbyterian Mixture in my clay pipe watching my kids swim.

Nice small pipe you can carry anywhere. Smokes good. I personally put electrical tape on mouth piece to avoid the clay feel on my lips.

Smokes good and small enough to carry anywhere. I wrap electrical tape on the mouth piece, feels better than clay on my lips.

Delivers a great, cool, and dry smoke.
I've read other reviews that state this type of pipe has a certain flavor that interferes with the flavor of the tobacco for the first 10 or so bowls. I've had an only great experience with these pipes since I've started to use them. I did notice a bit of a flavor for the first two or three bowls, but that dissipated quickly. The pipe I initially received had a small void that created a hole through the side of the bowl. This is not uncommon for this form of pipe. However, Pipes and Cigars immediately sent me a replacement pipe which I am thoroughly enjoying. The price, the performance, and the appearance of the pipe are outstanding, as well as the customer service experience I received from Pipes and Cigars.

This is not gonna be my go-to pipe on a regular basis, as it is pretty small. However, when it comes to a short smoke, this is a perfect pipe. Takes a similar amount of time as a cigarette. Easy to clean and maintain, at least now after a few smokes.

German clay pipe: small and stem 90 degrees wrong
I love a small clay pipe to smoke a little bit of something too strong for me usually. The problem with this pipe is that the mouth piece and stem shape at the end are more vertical than horizontal. You can't hold it between your teeth or lips very easily unless it's sideways. I still use it though, because the price was right. :-)

Best pipe I've owned.
Decided to try clay pipe on a whim and will never go back to briar. Ease of care was an unexpected but enjoyed factor but the best part was how moisture is not a problem especially for those who like a whiskey with a smoke.

1st clay pipe
It's taking a little while to get used to but this little pipe is great for flakes and especially Virginia's, giving an unadulterated profile. The stem and narrowness takes some practice and it is also one you probably dont eait to clench. Great pipe!

Welp, I loved it. Great build, amazing design. Light for it's length. I only suggest to anyone buying any clay pipe as your first. please buy a bag so you don't drop it first day like I did. I will be getting another one though.

Fun addition to the collection
I’ve only had a few bowls of tobacco out of this pipe, but it does smoke quite dry and delivers an overall satisfying experience. This being my first clay pipe I didn’t know what to expect, but I will say there’s a little bit of a feeling like you’re drinking from a paper straw. It doesn’t color the whole experience, but it does feel a bit funny on the lips. Maybe I’ll get used to it? Overall I do enjoy it though!

Traditionally great
Clay, meerschaum, and corncob are all traditional, dry and cool smoking pipes. The bamboo stem on this pipe is much better than clay. I’m going to get another as soon as I can manage it.

Nice pipe
This is now my traveling pipe. I keep it in my tobacco pouch. The bowl is a little bigger than I wanted but I only fill it half full. Great for the price and I love my long stemed tavern pipe too

Bought Old German Clay Pipe 39
I bought the first of these style simple clay pipes almost 20 years ago in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. I bought it at a gift because I was bored and it looked a bit different. That pipe established a home in my shop and lasted probably a decade before I dropped and broke it into 3 pieces. That first pipe and two I have bought at P&C over the last 5 years or so perform exactly the same. Here is my experience: - These pipes are very dependable! - They do not dangle well from the mouth - DO NOT try to smoke them hot. They have all had a very nice draw that can make for a smooth smoke. - I found none of them to clean easily with a commercial pipe cleaner. To clean the stem I keep a short length of soft steel wire that I wipe off with a shop rag to Works very well. None of the bowls developed a cake. They still smoke well. - The stark white clay quickly develops a nice, very old tymey look. - Lastly when they finally do break I have buried mine in long established locations where hopefully someone will dig it up 50 years from now planting petunias and say "Oh My, what an interesting thing I have found." I hope P&C carry these for many years to come. Bob

Nice to have, I suppose...
I purchased this to try out a clay pipe, and for that, this one serves its purpose. It's too small to be anywhere close to a favorite pipe. I keep it in an old glasses case shoved in my backpack alongside a pouch of Velvet, for those unexpected opportunities for an unplanned smoke. It's a really small pipe, that said, there's nothing wrong with it and it smokes well.

Old world pipe
I am an amateur archaeologist, I have found examples of this style of pipe dating to the early 1800's. I have wondered how they smoke, very nice!

the pipe fits in very well with my per 1840 rendezvous group and smokes cooler due to it's length .

A modest review
It’s a good product, behaves how it was described, and arrived fairly quickly. You cannot go wrong with the price either.

First Clay Pipe
As the title says, this was/is my first clay pipe and it is an attractive one at that. The bamboo stem is wonderful and the bowl itself is great. I would recommend this to someone who is browsing.

Great smoking pipe. Would recommend any of the old German clay pipes these guys sell.

Suprise Enjoyment
I have to say that when I first received the pipe I was rather turned off by it. Small imperfections and the size was so small. Not impressed. Still, worth a try, at least say I’d smoked a clay pipe, plus my German heritage kind of drove me to try. So I did and glad of it. Took a bit to get used to shape of the stem in my mouth, but the smoke was great. Cool, flavorful. The warmth of the clay. All made for a really good easy smoke. Interestingly, the small bowl makes for an easy and quick smoke rather than say a half-bowl of one of my normal pipes.

Awsome Pipe
This pipe is a real beauty, especially for the price. Quality is top notch. Super fun to smoke, makes you feel like you have stepped back in time.

Too small
I should have looked at the description closer for the actual size of the pipe. It's a good "tasting" pipe for trying out new tobaccos.

Beautiful pipe
I purchased this clay pipe to paint. It came in flawless and quickly became the 19th century pipe that I needed. Now to work on the patina... must smoke. Thank you!

It Works
What I got was a fairly close approximation of the picture. However, at a glance the flaws were obvious. I use this pipe now as a kind of knock around, because I don't really care what happens to it. So, what's wrong with it? OK, for instance, when the two halves were pressed together after molding, well it turned out to be more of a smashing than a pressing and as a result the pipe has a sort of half crushed look about it. Since the medium is pretty fragile it doesn't help that the bowl was bored off center as well, thus creating a very weak wall on one side. All that being said clay is still the way to go if you want a meerschaum like experience without having to pay for it, and unlike a solid meerschaum this pipe will not weaken after smoking aromatics in it. Clay buyers try to remember that clay transfers heat very well so the bowls can get very hot, and they tend to pick up oil from your hands as well. I had the exterior of mine glazed to strengthen it and avoid the handling issue.

Perfect Size for on the Go
Great little smoker. Love the smaller size. Great for on the go. Also love the clean smoke.

An old style of pipe smoking made new
These clays are quite pleasant with a good Virginia flake. They are pretty straightforward smokes. Smoke slowly, they burn hot. The manufacture of these pipes is good.

Evoking literary classics
This sturdy little pipe arrived well packaged and intact. While it is well made, it is likely to be delicate if knocked about too much. Take care, and it will last for many pleasurable smokes. While smoking a small bowl, I think back to how similar pipes would have been used by rustic characters in a Charles Dickens novel. I can see old Mr. Barkus of David Copperfield enjoying this pipe after his evening meal-- for some reason always referred to as a "convivial" pipe. Amazing to reflect that a small bowl of tobacco in this humble pipe would be the highlight of his day. And so it is for me; a time to reflect and ponder the remains of the day with my delightful German clay pipe.

Old German Clay Pipe
Excellent, durable pipe that smokes cool. Flavor of pipe tobacco is robust. Only drawback is the bowl is to.o hot to hold

Excellent Clay Flake pipe.
This is exactly as I had hoped for.. tall narrow bowl perfect for shortish sessions of my favorite flake pipe tobby folded and stuffed. Burns clean, tastes clean, and no break in period. These are the exact reason I have clays in my pipe collection. The craftsmanship was spot on and these are definitely NOT slip pipes.

Great pipe for the value
Love it, cool, dry, and a quick smoke

Tiny dry pipes, but beautiful
These are smaller than I would have expected, much smaller, but they smoke about a quarter of a bowl. The clay mouthpiece is uncomfortable to use the first couple of smokes, as it sticks to your lips, but it does get better. It's a clean, pure smoke, good for trying new tobaccos.

German Clay Pipe
Really like the clay pipe. Allows for the true tobacco flavor to come through. Little different clenching the clay stem between your teeth, but I like it. Another review talked about the pipe being too small...i disagree and think it is the perfect size....not too big and not too small. I will buy another.

Great bargain
I love these pipes because they are ready to go with no breaking in required. You have to be gentle. Since they are clay, I can smoke anything and get the full flavour.

Clay gets hot. Bowl is large and hard to pack. Smokes well though. For the price it's great.

Always wanted a clay after my boss in 1958 smoked one. One of those things just never gotten around to. Enjoy it as much I think, as he did.

Clays are definitely worth it...
Clay pipes smoke clean and cool. I really feel like i taste the tobacco and only the tobacco out of it. The clay is quickly becoming my pipe of choice. Even rivaling my briar at this point.

German Black Clay Pipe
A nice clay pipe. This is not my first clay, but the other one was a fragile little thing that I could not put a cleaner through for fear of breaking it. The German clay is solid and is a great smoking pipe.

First Clay
Just got my first one and I will likely pick up a few more. I used it for my first bowl of Christmas Cheer, it tasted clean, dry and cool. The Clay is much Sturdier than it feels (though clenching puts me on edge, and isn't very comfortable). Pipe Cleaners came out clean and dry, even after a full bowl. Hold it by the stem unless you need a hand warmer.

Long live clay
One great thing about clay pipes is that you do not have to worry about a burn out. Oh sure they can get HOT if you puff the dickens out of em. But these walls won't fall. Clay also doesn't interfere with tobacco flavor whatsoever. And for those of us Sherlock Holmes fans (the written stories by Sir A.C. Doyle) know that Holmes would have had something very similar to this beauty. A great pipe all round. Just be careful when you set it down or clench! It is clay and can break with impunity!

A good smoke, but brittle. Uncomfortable to hold in either hand or mouth.
Nice clean smoke, tobacco burns to ash and the taste of the tobacco comes through well, even on the first smoke. However, it does burn hot, and the the shape of the stem also makes it hard to clench comfortably and upright. The pipe tends to list to the side when clenched. Beyond this, the clay is brittle. When my pipe arrived, the mouthpiece was already chipped and crumbling slightly. Three others that I ordered arrived not chipped, but they all do seem somewhat brittle. A minor complaint: my pipe was not painted black as in the picture. All in all, a decent pipe for the price, but also rather imperfect and probably not a pipe that will last long-term.

Clay pipe
The pipe itself is a good pipe. However if u don't keep the stem wet, your lips stick to the tip. Personally I think an option for mouth pieces of some sort to fit the pipe should be offered when ordering.

Long Live Clay
Clay is an overlooked material for pipes these days. However it is one of the best materials for smoking pipe tobacco. It has little to no influence over the flavor whereas briar can. Don't get me wrong I have more than enough briar pipes I'll always cherish and smoke to the end of time! But if you haven't tried clay I highly recommend it. This pipe #20 in particular has a shorter shank/stem so you'll want to smoke this one slowly and gently. Lastly but certainly not least: it is EASY to keep clean!

Was smaller in size compared to pics in catalog but still worth the price. Was a good smoke. Will enjoy an occasional smoke in it. A curiosity to say the least.

Clay is the new Black
Every pipe smoker has a favorite pipe. I have several briar pipes that will always be at the top of my list. However after trying this fantastic pipe it has become my absolute favorite. The clay does not interfere with the tobacco flavor at all. Briar pipes do but only a very little. One may never notice if one has never tried a clay pipe. However after trying one you will be sold! It's worth a smoke. Cheers.

Clay smelled of chemicals
I am still allowing the clay pipe to air out / dry in the sun outside. It smelled very strongly of chemicals or ? As it has sat outside in the sun and fresh air it has improved. I will wait till it doesn't emit the strange odor before smoking with it.

Sticks to your lips
Unlike some of the other pipes that have the red or colored section this one does not and thus sticks to your lips.

Superb quality clay pipe
Finally, a quality black clay pipe equal to the finest euro clays that I have smoked. Most stateside clays are cheap knockoffs, not so with the No.16 Black Clay. A master craft black clay that even Sherlock Holmes would be honored to smoke. Thinks P&C for bringing this style back to these shores.

Turn Back the Clock
Of course it smokes hot. Any clay does. But it's a valuable piece of pipe smoking history. Before there were briars, there were clays. If you want to know exactly what pipe smoking was like 250 or 300 years ago, stuff this little clay with straight Virginia tobacco--all they had in those days--and light up. You will know what smoking was like in the 18th century. You can pretend you're Frederick the Great with his officers in his after-dinner smoking club. It's an educational experience and a lot of fun.

Surprisingly wonderful pipe
I'd never seen or used a Clay pipe and I absolutely love it. Such a clean and unique smoke compared to briar or cobs. I'm planning on buying several more in different styles.

A little soft
I really do enjoy the way they smoke, that is why I keep buying them. They usually last until they get too short to smoke. I just can't seem to keep them clamped between the teeth w/o the stems shattering in the bite area. BTW, do you plan to replace the Stanwell lighter that refuses to work after burping and feeding it triple refined propane?

Novel
I thought it worth a try. I have found it useful for other than it's intended purpose. The pipe is not as large as I expected from the offering image, much more petite than a typical tobacco burner.

Clay Pipe
My first clay pipe experience. I stuffed it with my favorite English Blend and headed for the garage (wife's designated smoking area) for what I thought would be a 5 minute smoke because of the tiny bowl. Surprisingly I had a great 30 minute smoke. It smoked hot but really good.

Nice pipe
It is smaller than I expected, but smokes nice. I like this pipe, it's easy to handle and clean. It does get hot like all clay pipes, but the ridges on the stem make it easy to hold.

Neat piece
A cool little piece of living history. Nice traditional cutty shape and well made. The smoking experience is different- very dry and very pure. Two lessons though; the bowl gets hot and you will learn to hold it by the stem. Second, the clay is quite gritty and only a masochist could clench this. I just read an article about clays in Early American Life magazine. A skull from Jamestown shows a perfectly round erosion in several teeth of a pipe smoker. Next time I will get one with a glazed stem. Cool piece, give it a try.

Old German Antique Clay Pipe 65
I bought Clay Pipe 65 a while ago. I just wanted to have a clay pipe to taste some tobacco and for a quick smoke. They are amazing, no need to break in, gets cleaned in 10 seconds, easily passes the cleaner, etc. Cons are, the bowl gets very hot so you have to hold it like a cigar (not that bad) and I don't know why but it sticks to your lips. I guess it is caused by saliva clay mix. It is gone after few minutes however you will have this problem every time you start smoking the clay pipe. Did I say that it is cleaned in 10 seconds?

Nice dry smoking pipe
I enjoy clay pipes and these simple and inexpensive pipes are a great way to taste a great tobacco. Quite often only one light is needed for the whole bowl. Highly recommended.

Clay is the Way
Great little pipe. Good for a 10-15 minute smoke. Smokes dry, cool and clean. You can really taste the tobacco in this one. Very small bowl though. Just fits a pipe tool tamper. More for tasting than for a long term smoke. I use it for at work when I have a smoke break because it doesn't take long to smoke.

Good pipe I recomend trying it out
I had gotten this pipe a few days ago and it's a great pipe for learning how to pace yourself if you smoke it too fast it will get hot in your hand if you smoke it slowly it will stay warm in your hand and because it's made out of clay you get a straighter tobacco flavor out of your favorite pipe tobacco which is nice only thing I don't like about my clay pipe is that the bit and stem is oval shaped with the long part of the oval up and down not side to side so it sometimes turns over when am not holding it while I'm drawing on it.

The Claw Clay Pipe
Not quite what I expected size wise (should pay closer attention to the specs), but this is a nice little pipe. A little handier than a tavern clay pipe and easier to hold. With the additional sculpting on the sides and front of the pipe, this clay pipe is easier to hold on to without burning your hands. I usually hold on to the front talon of this claw clay pipe like one would hold onto a tea cup. This pipe makes for a nice cool, dry smoke. No gurgling and you get the full, unimpeded flavor of your favorite tobacco. I would recommend this pipe to friends.

So Good I'll Need Seconds!
Came thoroughly wrapped and in perfect condition without a bruise to speak of. The color is so pristine it hurts me to think of smoking out of this beauty so I'll definitely be purchasing a second in order to keep one of these as a display piece. Worth the hassle of waiting on these to come back in stock.

A bit of history
I've often wondered what the old clay pipes smoked like and now I know. They smoke cool and dry. The bowl can get pretty warm. They are not comfortable to clench in your teeth. But all in all I enjoy smoking mine!
