Old German Clay Tavern Pipes

Tavern pipes were one of the first mass-produced pipes for the enjoyment of tobacco. Pipes were stored in the ceiling rafters until their customers return and were left as a memorial when they did not. Old German Clay pipes offer authentic Tavern pipes that are molded in the centuries old tradition and are meant to be enjoyed with your favorite drink.

Don't hesitate on clay
Great smoking pipe. This is my first clay pipe and the experience with it has been great so far. I have had it for almost a year now before this review. The bowl gets hot during the smoke, but the smoke stays cool through the stem. The bowl is also a generous size, so I usually only pack about half to three-quarters at a time. Highly recommend this pipe.

Bamboo clay pipe.
The pipe looks great, I have 3 other tavern pipes and have wanted to try a bamboo stem. The pipe smoked extremely well, as most clay pipes do with no excessive heat. The simple design of the pipe makes it great for the traditional look.

Great pipe - got a box to hold it
Great pipe . I love these clays. This one is much better than the last tavern clay I purchased. Will be buying thru you in the future. I got a nice box to hold it ... think it was a Quill box or wand box of Amazon. I have broken too many of these so I wanted to protect this one. Disregard that pipe tobacco in the picture it was just the least ratty envelope I had. Normally smoke Captain Black Royal.

Old German Clay 47
Great pipe! I just received it in the mail and it arrived in perfect condition. It was very well packaged. I've never smoked a clay before but was told it really lets you taste the tobacco. So when I do fire it up I think I'll try some Pirate Kake or Haunted Bookshop in it. I'm very happy with my purchase.

A great little pipe to either have a quick smoke or even test a new blend. Affordable and reliable!

Something nice
This is a fun pipe to smoke. after one gets used to it. It draws well. Learning how to hold it maybe new to some of us old corncob or brier smokers. However there is just something nice about smoking an old style clay pipes once in a while.

Really fun pipe!
Great pipe. The coolest, driest smoke I've ever had. Gives a great Lord of the Rings feel. The first pipe came with a small crack by the bowl that made it unsmokable, but P&C got me all fixed up. Great customer service!

First clay pipe and I
First clay pipe and I definitely enjoy it. Not exactly a fill it and forget it kind of experience. You have to pay attention a bit more and hold it differently. It feels great and has a very old world vibe. Smoke has great flavor. The design is nice and it did not get tacky in my lips as I feared it would. Will probably get another from the selection available. Enjoy it will watching a period show or movie where clays' might be used, it adds to the experience all round.

Nice small clay pipe, working pretty well so far. The bowl was a lot deeper than I expected. Satisfied with purchase.

And for the love of God, don't hold it by the bowl!
A nice clay with a bamboo stem. Good for testing, and with a surprisingly deep bowl for when you want to settle in for a long smoke. Fragile, though, like many clays, so be careful.

Great pipe but read on
I bought the 9.99 clay pipe. It looks nothing like the picture they post when. I now think the pic is of a more expensive pipe because it has a bamboo mouthpiece, mine does not. But whatever for ten bucks it's well worth it. It has very nice casting with a king on his thrown and on the other side is a horse with wings. As for smoking I love it. You can really taste the tobacco even better than a cob. Highly recommend. Gave it four stars because of the picture they use. It should be a picture of what your going to receive not of a more expensive one. Hate to say it cause p&c has been great to me but this is false advertising.

Good clay pipe! I wanted
Good clay pipe! I wanted a clay pipe with a bigger diameter hole than the one I bought a while back. In my opinion clay pipes allows me to taste the pure tobacco flavor better than wood or corn pipes. On woods pipes i can smell and taste the wood of the pipe infused in the flavor of the tobacco, corn cobb pipes are the same. I can taste the burning corn cobb infused in the tobacco. I recommend any pipe smoker that do not have a clay pipe to try one. They are not very expensive.

Great pipe, great price
Excellent pipe for a great price. Tastes very clean. I had an issue with the first received and Pipes and Cigars Customer Service was very helpful getting everything resolved.

Well worth the price
What a fantastic addition to my collection. Provides a fantastic, cool experience, and the small bowl is great for when time is short. They do appear to be a touch brittle (i.e.: don't drop this piece of fired clay onto any surface harder than it is), but it is apparently a historical design and I love the rustic nature of it. A minor note, is there was some imagery crafted into the side of the bowl, but, unfortunately, with such a crude touch, I cannot make out what these characters are. Would love to know.

Great Pipe for What it is
Great and interesting pipe for the money, smokes really well and the clay bowl and long stem make the smoke cool- but the bowl does get hot, so you have to hold it by the stem behind the bowl, and you can't grip it too tightly in your teeth or it could break. As long as you understand what it is you are getting, you should be pleased. I liked it so much I bought two more for gifts.

It’s damn near perfect
A fantastic pipe. Smoke this specifically in the evening’s cold, while winding down, and it gets a great, cool, dry smoke, every time. I’m buying three more just to have them as spares on my next order, because I don’t want to be without one at any time. The only negative thing I have to say, is, the obvious- it’s a bit delicate. But it does hold up great. I even dropped it on some concrete the other day- and I’m smoking that exact pipe right now. Albeit, a bit shorter haha. Try this out! You’ll love it!

I love this pipe! I
I love this pipe! I just have to remember not to do anything semi-strenuous with it in my mouth. I bit off about a quarter inch moving my fire pit and had to sand the tip smooth again! But it's a great inexpensive pipe.

Great into pipe for clays.
Smokes great, I do struggle with the mouth piece and stem design.

I've only smoked this pipe
I've only smoked this pipe twice, but I enjoy it. Definitely different flavor than my briars. I have other churchwardens but this one smokes cooler, a pleasant time. It seems to be well made , obviously delicate. Overall quality seems good.

Great Smoke at a Great Price
What a first clay pipe experience! The smoke is cool and dry. I picked up flavors in my tobacco I hadn't caught before. With the price being approachable (being on sale also helped), I felt like it wasn't a risk. My investment has paid off and then some. You do have to be careful with it since it can break relatively easy, but that's no big deal since they are commonly discarded and replaced. I recommend looking at how to hold it (the bowl does get very hot) and how to be gentle on your teeth. Look up pipe notches in teeth and you'll see what I mean. Granted, that's for people who will smoke clays nearly exclusively and for decades on end. Which you may! All in all, I highly recommend getting one to see if it's your new thing.

Outstanding smoke
This pipe is a fantastic smoke. I was doubtful of the hype behind clay pipes but have to admit i was wonderfully surprised. Great dry cool smoke. The bowl is a perfect size, at first i though it was going to be small but was pleased to see it was not. I did really notice more subtle flavors I had not picked up on before from my favorite blends. This is quickly becoming my go to pipe not only because I love how it smokes but also because I think its a great looking pipe and alot of fun. Pick one up, you wont be sorry.

Good for a short smoke
It's great to taste different flavors, a short smoke. Just hold it at the stem instead of the bowl because it does get hot.

Great pipe, but very delicate.
I was torn on the review. For the smoke quality, I would give it 5 stars. For the practicality, I would give it 2. I bought this pipe and had one of the best smokes out of it. But I could feel that the entire pipe is under a lot of tension. I was ready to take it over to a friends house to show it off. I gently laid it on the car seat on it's own. The stem tip BARELY grazed the seat belt buckle and snapped the whole pipe in half. I am now the proud owner of an Old German Clay Pipe 50 at a custom 7 inches. That being said, I am still using it and it still smokes great! I would not purchase this pipe again, but for sure would buy a shorter one.

Decent
For what these are, they are worth the $10. They are generally authentic, both in material and in production style, to those of similar style from the 1700s and early 1800s. They are reasonably durable, and with some small polishing to remove any rough edges (and with a smoke or two) they are very authentic looking. They produce a clean, dry smoke due to the clay material used, and infer very little taste (none of which is poor). For an authentic colonial smoke, I do recommend trying this out.

Love it. This clay pipe
Love it. This clay pipe smokes really well. Great for tasting blends. Don't smoke crumble cake in this, it taste great but clogs the pipe easily. I was lucky I had an air compressor and was able to clean the blockage from the crumble cake. It also doesn't need much cleaning at all, just don't let a cake build up.

A good taste for all day!
I really like my new pipe and just recieveed it in the mail, I really like the way it draws and is very affordable and the feel of the genuine clay is just beyond the normal pipe smoking. I am a bit of German and Old German Clay Pipes brings a little of Germany to my town. I am impressed on how the pipe is really beautiful with the carvings and plan on purchasing more pipes.

Welp, I loved it. Great build, amazing design. Light for it's length. I only suggest to anyone buying any clay pipe as your first. please buy a bag so you don't drop it first day like I did. I will be getting another one though.

You get what you pay for.
It's cheap, useable, and interesting to look at. But there was a lot of flash on mine from the mold. Not complaining because at that price I'm sure they are running a ton of hand molds at a time to make a profit.

Traditionally great
Clay, meerschaum, and corncob are all traditional, dry and cool smoking pipes. The bamboo stem on this pipe is much better than clay. I’m going to get another as soon as I can manage it.

My first clay pipe - so nothing to judge against. But I am satisfied thus far. The length makes it nearly impossible to hold with your mouth only so you must hold it with one of your hands. No problem just not what I am used to.

Great pipes for low price
I like that I get the full flavor of the tobacco. It is a different feel to have the clay than other pipes. Hopefully, these pipes last without breaking.

Great Clay Pipe
Very nice, longer-stemmed clay. Bowl is nicely shaped for a shorter smoke. No complaints with Pipe in any way. Clay Pipe newbies should know this is a Pipe to be smoked at a favorite spot, not in a car, motorcycle or while hunting! They are by nature, fragile and if you drop it, it's gone... Buy this with confidence, great pipe!

Old German Clay Tavern Pipe
I bought this item as a Christmas gift and it broke as soon as it was filled and placed in the mouth. My opinion is that this item is for decoration only and not for smoking, it is a nice looking pipe just not as functional as I had thought.

15.5 inch clay pipe
Wow what a cool pipe. It took a while to get use to smoking in because this is my first church warden pipe as well as my first clay. Very beautiful construction and it is light as a feather. Personally I enjoy English blends in this pipe. I recommend every pipe smoker try a clay !

Fun Bargain
A great bargain and it felt like going back in time. I was really surprised how easily the pipe smoked. I bought the least expensive design and was pleasantly surprised. A lot of fun.

not quite there
These pipes are neat, as are all clay pipes. Part of the problem was my fault. When unpackaging, with as carefull as I was being, I still managed to break it in half! I have some old clay pipes and they are smooth when you put it in your mouth to smoke, this pipe was sticky. It kept making my lips stick to it, I guess its the coating or the lack thereof. Hmm...might just be all me. :-(

I am a new pipe smoker, but these Clay Tavern Pipes, though they make me look like Gandalf (I'm 65), are the nicest smoking pipes I've tried so far. I'll definitely be ordering more.

Simple Clay is the Way
One of the best smoking pipes I have on the lower end affordable scale. Just bought another one recently because my first one's stem snapped while I was cleaning it. Learned the hard way you do not want to tap the bowel on the palm of your hand because the stress and vibration will be transmitted to the stem, causing it to snap off. While these are fragile pipes, they smoke beautifully. Nice dry and cool smoke. Absolutely no gurgle and you can really taste the tobacco. Stays lit without much hassle. You do need to hold on to the stem though while smoking as the bowl gets really hot. My only complaint is that when I got my new one, it had a pin sized hole in the side of the bowl from the manufacturer. So far though, this flaw doesn't seem to affect the smoking experience though. Oh well, I bought this one as a smoker, not a prom queen.

Absolutely Great Service!!!
I continue to buy from ya'll at P and C because of this fact... I originally received a broken German clay tavern pipe. I let them know immediately and then I received the new pipe in immaculate shape the very next day!!! The representative helped me out quickly and was almost as upset as I was to hear of the broken pipe! Sum it up...True Customer Service.

Nostalgia
First time in a while I've had a clay pipe & I'd forgotten what a dry smoke they can be. I'm enjoying the pipe - it took a bit of adjustment after such a time but it was a bit like riding a bicycle, except for the falling off & breaking something part. I could wish clay pipes weren't so fragile, but with a reasonable amount of care it should stay intact for a while.
