RO Perique Series Blend SV-23

The RO Series Perique Blend SV-23 contains Perique from South Vacherie, which is the only part of the Golden Triangle situated to the south of the river. It has strong coffee notes with an herbal influence and some white pepper. Combining it with sweet, but somewhat neutral tobaccos allows this tasty Perique to come through, with the Virginias adding enough sweetness to offset the bitter espresso notes.

A different side of Perique
So I guess I'll be the first to review this unique blend. First, my tin came a little dry, so I rehydrated it to my preference and jarred it up and let is sit for a couple of weeks. The cut is a fine ribbon that is easy to pack (think Dunhill ribbons). Most Va/Pers that I've had tend to be on the sweeter/fruity side, whether they be bright and citrusy or dark and plummy. This is not that. The sweetness is very subdued and the Perique reminds me of a good peppery Nicaraguan cigar with loads of cocoa and coffee. Russ did a great job of highlighting the "single-estate" Perique and it shines throughout the entire bowl. It burns evenly all the way down to the heel to a gray ash. I will be interested to see how it ages and if any other favors emerge. Regardless, this is a great blend that Perique lovers should try as it gives a glimpse into the different flavors that Perique has to offer.
