Russ' Mountain Pass

Mountain Pass is a wonderful cool-weather blend, perfect for a stroll outside. This Latakia-based pipe tobacco is enhanced by plenty of exotic Izmir, which adds an intriguing zesty note, and it's complemented by enough sweet Virginia to keep the flavor from becoming heavy. If you're a fan of rich English style blends, you'll want to load up on Mountain Pass for your next hiking trip.

The Gorgenzola of tobacco blends.
this is a blend that lives up to its name.... Mountain Pass. because if you smoke this near any civilization you'll probably find yourself with a one-way ticket to the nearest desert island. the smell stains the hands and anything else it comes in contact with the smell of almost campfire smoke likely due to its more... aromatic components, personally I like it, but youll find yourself with more friends if you give a little courtesy and smoke it outside or on a camping trip.

Nice little English
Let me say first-I love me some English blends. I'm not an expert, but I think I know the difference between a heavy versus light English and some of the subtle nuisances. And while Russ's Mountain Pass isn't knock your socks off Latakia and you certainly aren't sitting so far into England, your touching the Queens hand, it's certainly an English in my book. Its lighter, with enough oriental tang and vague spiciness to satisfy the English tooth. I smoked it first in exactly the description it told me to, on a cool Fall morning. It was delicious from the start, built in intensity as the bowl wore on. It burnt evenly. Fair warning, it came dry. But I like my tobacco on the dryer side so I didn't mind. If you want a cool weather, morning smoke, this is a very good blend to start you day.

It's currently impossible to determine the likability of this tobacco,
I tried a small sample based upon the description provided by the P & C web page. When I wanted to investigate further It was too late. There was none for sale, and none since then. It was good enough to make me want to look further, but I'm not sufficiently convinced that I should recommend it. If it ever comes back, I'll try it again.

Russ is a genius when it comes to pipe tobacco blends. His blends are always top notch!

Pass.
Its a decent smoke but not much of an English. If you are expecting Latakia, orientals or perique you will be disappointed as I was. Virginias are nice. Mild mannered and uncomplicated. Does not satisfy the crave for English.

Solid English blend - excellent price!
Smooth and flavorful English blend, no bite (even though it was a bit too dry and I smoke too hot) and appropriate any time of day. Ordering more right now, and will keep some on hand from here on out - especially now that the weather is cooling down.

Mountain Pass passes the English test!
Mountain Pass is an excellent English blend, so full of flavor and character yet not strong to smoke and zero tongue bite. I'm not sure what "Izmir" is, but I did detect something different when the bowl got hot enough, maybe it's this spicy variety kicking in. Great room smell too, especially for an English. Here's hoping this one isn't on the FDA chopping block and that it remains on Russ's chopping block.

Mountain Pass
Other than needing a bit of humidity, it is a very light and pleasant English. I hope you don't plan to dc it, if you are, let me know and I'll order more to stock up

Woodlands revisited
After reading the reviews I had to add my two cents. This blend was an instant hit with me. The Latakia is prominent but not overbearing. Quality. More interesting are the orientals. I wish I could tell what they are. All I know is they are amazing. Fragrent , cedar woodsy. The blend is balanced but in favor of the orientals to me. Exactly what I like. It does not appear as dark in color as other Balkan blends. I have ordered this several times since its a steal. This is quality stuff and deserves five stars no question.

RMB - Mountain Pass
Showed up rather dry, but after rehydrating it has become a favorite on cold autumn mornings.

Jury is still out on the Mountain Pass
This blend arrived ready to smoke, not too dry & not too wet, just right. Over the next week or so and 6 bowls later this stuff still bites my tongue. I read a review that cold weather.....etc. will give that a try in about 2 months. The desert in Nevada is hot most of the time. Other than tongue bite the taste, burn, packing & room note "patio outside" is well received. Maybe the 4 star when the weather gets cooler.

A winner for me.
Outstanding! This is a Top 5 blend for me. It is reminiscent of Drew Estates' Meat Pie, but less spice. It's certainly a home run for my rotation. Thank you, Russ.

Ended up in the trash
Not good at all. Don't know what other reviewers are on about. Worst English blend I have had in some time. Sorry, Russ. I stored it for a few months and tried it again. Not my cup of tea.

Aroma
Maybe it was just me and the wife, but this tobacco had a weird funky smell to it that emanated from the baggy it was shipped in. So much so, that I had to remove it from the den and put it out in the garage. BUT, when smoked it had a great robust aroma that turned out pretty decent.

Great blend on a cold day! Seems to have quite a bit of Oriental in it to me, which is great since I'm a big fan of Orientals. Another winner from Russ!

4.5 Stars Really
I've never been disappointed with a blend that Russ has made. They've always lived up to their descriptions. That's not to say I will always like something that he has done but I believe you get what you should expect. I really enjoyed this, very warming, tasty and not overpowering in any way. I could smoke this as my regular english blend without complaint. I give it 4.5 stars because I know Russ does do better english blends. It would get just 4 but the price point gives it that push to 4.5. For some of us anyways price is always an issue and in many cases is the final deciding factor in a purchase. This would be money well spent.

A Lovely Mild English.
I've smoked several blends from Russ, and they're all pretty good - counting this one as well. Russ' Mountain Pass is a very mild Latakia/oriental blend that will in no way, destroy your taste-buds. upon smelling the bag i pick up on a very very light hint of mint, which is weird because there is none in there, nor do i taste anything aside from a lovely English-style smoke. On a side note however, my bag says " Mountain Trail " not "Pass" which rather odd.

Decent English blend
A decent English blend with some zest, however, there just happen to be a few more that I enjoy more than this one. This is not a bad blend by any means, it's just that Russ has made other blends that I have discovered along the way to meeting this one that in my opinion are far more interesting. If you enjoy medium full bodied English blends this one will be enjoyed.
