Samuel Gawith Hansom Flake

I was pretty impressed with the first bowl of this, however, with subsequent bowls I was unable to get this to burn coolly regardless of drying time. The flake is pretty moist out of the tin. Within a few puffs, the heat level of the smoke begins to detract from the experience. I smoke other VaPers regularly and have not had this same experience. I will cellar for awhile to see if that makes a difference. Flavor was pleasing, mild sweetness, hay/citrus notes, some additional subtle flavor in the aftertaste, which must be the Lakeland essence, that I also found appealing.

A very nice Va/per blend, I am normally a English or Burleys smoker. I have been getting into Virginia tobacco over the years. I have always liked the SG blends, it’s a shame we can’t get them all the time. I like how this tobacco smokes. I may order more of this while we can get it.

A little dry out of the tin but great taste and slow burning, can bite a little if pushed. For me not an all day smoke but fantastic after dinner smoke

This is by far the best SG flake I've ever smoked! It's perfect right out of the tin and never got hot. Great floral notes with a creamy mouthfeel. Outstanding in a Missouri meerschaum Eaton pipe. Highly recommend.

Very high quality VaBur smoke with a lovely tin note, very nice room note, and long-lasting flavorful smoking quality. Not quite as good as MacBaren's Navy Flake, and (as is typical with SG) slightly "soggy" and irregularly cut-and-packed flake, but a fine tobacco nevertheless..

A very nice Va/Per with a very slight Lakeland topping that YOU BARELY NOTICE. Medium bodied with no bite. It has a nice cocoa tin note and taste. I would buy again.

Hansom Flake is very good. Medium bodied smoke that could be smoked all day. Did not cause tongue bite. Lakeland essence was very light. Glad I have another tin to enjoy.

A stronger in flavor and nicotine offering in a crowded VaPer field. Stands apart enough with the slightest of Lakeland topping. I am not a big Lakeland fan but you can barely detect it the majority of the time. May not see this one again for a long time if ever. Highly recommended.

Nice mild smoking tobacco, but the Lakeland essence masks the Virgina taste I enjoy.

This is quite singular in Gawith's stable. Little to zero Lakeland scent [which I like in a few of their VAs]. The Perique is there but not heavy handed. The blond VAs are the mainstay of this lovely VaPer and they offer a nice palate of oats and citrus. The Perique, in the background, seems to be adding a touch of spice. I loaded up on Hansom as I'm banking it will be a great VA to age.

Typical fine Gawith Virginias, and a very strong cocoa tin note that does not carry over into the smoke. No floral taste in my experience, so those who fear Lakelands need not worry!

Cool smoking, minimal “Lakeland” taste if any.

Very smooth and lightly naturally sweet VaPer. Did not notice a heavy Lakeland essence at all. Take it slow and let the taste of the tobacco take its course. Good nic level and the quality of the Virginias taste carried all the way to the end of the bowl. I am really impressed as I expected a heavy floral taste, but what essence that is there really compliments the tobacco in a very subtle way. Clean burning and the perique is lightly applied also. Good stuff. Just so happened it was paired with a good old Miller High Life and the combination worked out great. Now I want to smoke it while riding in a little horse carriage while being chauffeured around like the picture on the label.

I received two tins since it was new Not knowing what to expect. The tin note reminded me of G&H Bob’s Chocolate Flake. The aroma and taste to me was exactly that of BCF. I’ll purchase more of it no doubt.

It's normally a risk to order several tins of something you have never tired before but Samuel Gawith proves again to be the exception. I ordered 3 tins as soon as I saw this show up and think I will need a few more. The flakes are mostly long broken strips so you will need to rub it out instead of using a fold and stuff to pack it. Can be a little hard to get going at first but once its lit needed almost no relights. This is a very smooth and subtle smoke the Virginia is subtly sweet with the Perique adding just a touch of zest, a very nice mix with no one part over shadowing the other. There is a very faint Lakeland essence to it but it is very subtle while smoking where it really shows is in the tin and room note, the tin note is amazing with the Lakeland I must say. If your looking for a nice and easy all day smoke this is one you want in your rotation.
