Savinelli Churchwarden Black Pipes

I bought two of these churchwarden pipes, a 403 and a 601. Both of them are very good quality and very good smokers. I have a lot of churchwarden pipes, three of them now, are Savinelli. The 403 is the only straight stem churchwarden that I own, and it begs to be held in my hand, rather than clinched in my teeth. The rusticated bowl has a nice tactile feel, that is pleasing to the senses, and it's a great hand warmer. My third Savinelli churchwarden is a smooth bent billiard, that I bought 20 years ago. The addition of the 403 and 601 is very welcomed in my pipe rotation. I have several other Savinelli pipes and I can't say enough good things about them. Savinelli makes great pipes, at affordable prices.

I purchased the Savinelli 104 and the 601, I've already reviewed the 601 so I'll now review the 104. This is a very good pipe. An extra long pipe cleaner will easily pass all the way through to the bottom of the bowl. It has a very light bowl coating, which is so light that I am tasting briar on the first bowl, and will undoubtedly be there for the next several bowls. I christened this pipe with Mac Baren Classic Dark Twist, and it performed very well. I was able to keep the pipe just warm, and smoke it all the way to the bottom with only a fine gray ash left over. I'm looking forward to breaking this pipe in, and I can already tell that it is going to be a great smoking pipe!

This is a very good pipe. There is a very light bowl coating (or pre carbonizing), that is so light that I can taste briar on the first bowl, that will undoubtedly continue to be there for the next several bowls. I christened the pipe with Mac Baren Classic Dark Twist, and it performed very well. I actually like the taste of briar while breaking in a new pipe, and I was happy have it show up. All of my other churchwarden pipes are bent to one degree or another, but this one is straight. I like it, it's a bit of a different feel than a bent churchwarden. The rusticated finish feels good in my hand, it gives a nice tactile enjoyment to the pipe. I look forward to breaking it in and can tell already that it is going to be a great smoking pipe!

The Savinelli 601 rusticated black vchurchwarden is a very nice pipe. I have about a dozen churchwarden pipes, and this one is at the front of the pack along with its smooth counterpart. There's something about these Savinelli churchwardens (and all Savinelli pipes), that keep them in my rotation, they just smoke fabulously. My new 601 hit the ground running, with a pre-carbonized chamber, and it was an immediate good smoker. Since it's arrival, I keep reaching for it daily, and I have to force myself to give it a rest. I'm very picky about pipes, and this one has earned its place in the herd.

This is my first churchwarden. It's a good pipe I just would like the bowl to be larger. It smoke great!!

Beautiful pipe. So far during the breaking in period it has provided a great smoke for my English tobaccos. I'm always happy with Savinelli pipes.

I have recently started my endeavor of enjoy a good pipe. I have a corncob for the summer months and recently purchased something more elegant in the Savinelli Churchwarden. A beautiful pipe that smokes wonderfully. Comes is a black cloth. Highly recommended.

The stem is to large & heavy for the small pipe

I have never owned a Savinelli. I am glad that that has changed! I like longer pipes. Most of my pipes are churchwardens. I bought this simply because it looked good on the site, but when it arrived, I was impressed beyond expectation. It struck me as simply and gracefully elegant. When I picked it up I had to do a double take on its absence of heft. Where’s the bulk? Is it made out of balsa wood? It is so light in the mouth with so much less pressure on the teeth than any other of my churchwardens - I can smoke it while driving! I could tell that it was my favorite from the get go and smoking it is a delight. I think I am going to have to buy another one or two or three. There is a bartender at a local club I frequent that has seen me smoking a variety of my pipes. When she saw me smoking this one, she walked over with a smile and said, “Now that is a good looking pipe!” Yes, come payday I’m buying another. Question is, should I buy a brown one so I can tell them apart?
