Sutliff 504C Aromatic English

I'm still a bit of a beginner, so it's entirely possible I lack all the necessary context to properly review this blend. Had trouble keeping it lit. The mild strength and body profile seemed to clash with the smoky latakia notes. It wasn't awful, but I'm not in a hurry to try it again. Reminiscent of smoldering sawdust and lawn waste.

Excellent blend. Just the right amount of Latakia, noticeable but not overpowering.

In my mind, if you are familiar with Plumb pudding...take a step down to Maltese falcon, and then take another step down to this. Smokey and smooth with a veerry faint hint of that plumb pudding stank. I enjoyed it.

Its a good mellow english. Light on the aro & english. I tried it apon arrival and didnt care for it. Jarred it for about 3 weeks and totally enjoyed it , especially once i found the right pipe for it. Again its light on the english and aro but it's there. Pipe: Peterson Phoenix Lucite 05. I will definitely be getting more.

Nice smoking blend

Just what I was hoping and looking for! I'm very new to pipe smoking and had only tried a few aromatic blends at first. Out of curiosity, I tried a medium English blend from the local tobacco shop and WOW! It was intense but I was hooked and intrigued. I wanted to try a lighter blend as an introduction to English blends. I stumbled upon a tin of Presbyterian mixture at the shop and fell in love. Still, I wanted to find something with the rich, full, slightly leathery smoke of that mixture with a bit of sweetness, but not too much. Sutliff 504C ticks all those boxes! My only criticism was that I would like it with a tiny bit more Latakia, but it smokes great, packs well, needed no relights, burns to clean white ash, has a mild and pleasant aroma and has plenty of rich, full smoke throughout the bowl. I will be ordering a larger size for sure. This stuff is great!

I’ve been involved with the pipe hobby for over 10 years now and my cellar is stocked with several different English blends, Virginias, burleys or that I go to very often. I have over years become “bored” with the aromatic world as whenever I grab a tin and have an aro smoke I’m just simply not satisfied on so many levels. I’ll make it through 1/2 of a bowl, dump it and grab some tried and true English blend, and remind myself to stop with the aromatics! It seems that I have really come to appreciate the nuance of all the true, non aromatic tobacco experience and taste. Enter Sutliff 504 … again I pack a pipe with an aromatic on the days that I’d rather have a bud light and not a Guinness…hoping that this Aro isn’t going to smoke like nothing but hot air and some bite . But this time wait, I can taste the Latakia! I can “feel” the fuller flavor and thick billowy smoke, I can taste the natural tobaccos! But nice and light and with that occasional touch of aro sweetness… what a pleasant surprise! Thanks to Sutliff 504C for the days that I’m not in the mood for a full flavored English and can actually experience an aromatic that I enjoy and am satisfied by! So far an excellent tobacco blend, packs well, lights well, thick billowy smokey Latakia and a touch of sweetness. Can smoke a bit hot and if you don’t take your time u can get the occasional gurgle. Feel like I’ve found what I was looking for, will likely buy more.

The mildly smoky, woody, earthy, musty sweet Cyprian Latakia takes a small lead here. The tangy dark fruity, earthy, woody, bready red Virginia is a secondary player. The burley is earthy, woody, nutty with some molasses supplying an important support role. The black cavendish offers a hint of sugariness. The mildly sweet vanilla topping moderately sublimates the tobaccos. Burns at a normal rate, cool and clean, with a fair amount of smoothness as it easily burns to ash. Requires an average number of relights, and leaves little dampness in the bowl. Has a short lived, pleasant after taste and room note. An easy going, mild all day smoke.

As an aromatic lover, I was curious to dip into the English. Wow! I was amazed with this. The latakia comes through for sure but not too much. I am loving this and am excited to try other English, latakia, and periques.

Very smooth, no bite. Has a great room note. Love it!

It's not that unusual to find black cavendish in an English blend, but Sutliff 504C Aromatic English provides a much more gererous helping than most. The result is an intriguing variation on an English blend theme, half aromatic, half English, truly a "blend". An excellent choice for English blend devotees who like to mix it up, or for those who prefer aromatics but are English-curious.
