Sutliff Black Cordial

Black Cordial is one of Sutliff's most popular pipe tobaccos. It takes four different grades of steam blackened tobaccos along with a light measure of bright Virginia to create the mixture, which serves as a base for a sweet and tangy cordial liqueur flavor. See for yourself why so many people enjoy Sutliff Black Cordial.

Fair on its own but better if blended

Not so cordial
A little weak in flavor, strength and staying power. Might be a good mixer but on its own, it is lacking.

Great Taste thru the whole bowl.
I thought it was really good, had a great taste thru the whole bowl. Should have bought more.

Would order again
This stuff was pretty good. I'm a fan of Cult Blood Red Moon and was looking for something comparable and cheaper. This was satisfying, though it's apples and oranges compared to canned Cult product. You can smoke this all day.

A nice change
This is smooth blend. I have tried many blends from different makers and in my opinion Sutliff produces great bulk blends. This is mild, and pleasant.

Great taste but....
The taste is great when first lighting but looses its flavor after the second light. I know to "sip" and not puff so I'm not burning the flavor out of it. It does however have a great room note. I find it is a little too chunky and is hard to pack properly. One thing it does have going for it is it doesn't bite. I have a very sensitive tongue and it's usually sore after one bowl full but I can smoke several bowls in a day and I feel no pain.

Pleasent surprise
I recently bought several Sutliff bulk tobacco's when they were on sale. Still have not tried them all. I did not expect much from this one because I do not like cherry flavor in my pipe or a combination of flavors. This one is very good, second only to Sutliff Black Vanilla. I put it in one of my older, not a great smoker pipes and it was still very good. Of coarse the shipping & handling of the order from P & C was speedy and accurate. Highly recommended.

My go to tobacco
This is the best tobacco I have found. It is mild enough to smoke all day. Doesn’t over-power the mouth nor leave a bad taste behind. Smells great and smokes perfectly. Ordered 12 oz. and went through it pretty fast. Just ordered 20 oz more. Love this tobacco!

Run of the mill, goopy aromatic
My preference is for English, but I have had aromatics I like (such as Peter Stokkebye Nougat) and I was hoping for one of those from Sutliff, alas, no luck. It has a cherry taste at the top of the bowl, but midway through the flavor becomes non-distinct and unappealing. It also leaves a lot of gunk in my pipes. I tried drying it, smoking it in different pipes, packing it differently, and mixing it with other tobaccos, but I just couldn’t find a way to like it. If you do enjoy OTC aromatics you might love it.

A really nice bowl...
Excellent flavor, and a pleasure to smoke. Good bunk mate with the heartier Balkan that I like, and is very nice for the first bowl of the day.

Nice Smoke
Thought this was more of a cherry aroma but wasn't. Still a nice smoke with a hint of fruit. Mild on the tongue.

Nice mild flavor
Nice mild flavor. Does not bite the tongue or leave a nasty after taste like a mouse had been bedding down in your mouth... pleasant smell too.

A quintessential pipe tobacco
A great aromatic with good flavor but not overpowering. Great change from stronger non-aromatics or cigars. So glad I bought a bunch on sale.

A Sweet, Smooth, Smoke. Simply a great blend.
I love it. Great for an after dinner smoke or a morning cup of coffee. The sweet aroma lingers long after the pipe is done. So those of you that can smoke indoors, you'll be pleased with the lingering scent.

This one has it all
I cannot say enough about this tobacco, this one has it all! Wonderful pouch note, a pleasant smoke, with a great aftertaste. It packs well, and although it was a little difficult to get lit, once lit it required no re-lites and just needed to be tamped down a couple of times. A pleasant break from the syrupy cherry blends that dominated the market. No matter how hard I push it, NO BITE. If I could only smoke one tobacco, this would be it!

Favorite
Wonderful blend. Nice mellow smoke with no bite. The wife enjoys the room note so it's a win win for me. It is becoming my favorite and I go through several bowls a day

Sutliff Black Cordial
My favorite pipe tobacco to date. I did try a recomended Apple Fritter tobacco as well which was decent but donest touch Black Cordial in my optinion. With the opporutunity given here, I would like to suggest or ask if there is some sort of way to notify customers at the time of online purchases if an item is on backorder. When I recently purchased the black cordial, a pipe and the apple fritter tobacco I had done so for a campling trip. When the package landed two days before my trip I found that the apple fritter tobacco was on back order so I was not able to have it for my trip as planned. Had I known it was on back order I would have ordered a differnent product because of the timeline I was on. Regardless, I do want to say that I really think you guys are doing a great job and enjoy ordering from you. -Matt

My favorite aromatic.
Black Cordial is the best aromatic I have ever tried. I found this many years ago and it has remained the mildest, best tasting and sweetest smelling tobacco to this day.

Awesome aromatic smoke
Great flavor and great aromatic qualities. Constantly get complimentary comments from both men and women. You don't get any complaints smoking black cordial. It is my favorite blend.

Sutliff Black Cordial
Great flavor, easy to light , burns slow and cool. This is one of my favorites. It's also one that I can smoke all day long,

Very mild and tasty
After trying several different brands of pipe tobacco (including Lane BCA, Lane RLP-6, and Lane 1Q), Sutliff Black Cordial attracted my attention the first time I tried it -- it was different from all the others. Over time, I learned to appreciate some distinctive qualities about it. First, the taste of the smoke is most pleasant. Second, the stomach irritation or stomach upset felt least noticeable, just a touch better than the Lane 1Q, which is important for me -- especially, when I smoke on an empty stomach. Even though I do not inhale the smoke in my lungs, or otherwise, somehow the smoke affects my stomach (it could be related to the nicotine content), and that is what bothered me most about pipe smoking. In conclusion, if priced reasonably, this is a satisfying alternative to the Lane 1Q -- possibly milder, causing less stomach irritation, and with a better tasting smoke. I took advantage of the sale to get more (I only had a limited quantity which came in a sample), but I am not sure its slightly preferred qualities are worth paying a large premium.

Dessert anyone?
Very good and mild. This is bound to be an addition to my after dinner smokes. It's like dessert.

Great tobacco
One of the five tobaccos I bought when I started smoking a pipe (4 months ago). Like their Dulce de Leche, nice aroma, no bite, stays lit. What I look for in a tobacco, but as I said, I'm a newbie. And like the Leche, I'll be buying more.

Customer Testimonials
This is the same tobacco I have been buying from my local retailer except at half the price! My wife hates pipe smoking but even admitted that it smelled really good. Get you some of this, it's inexpensive, smells great, and smokes good.
Something is different! I have smoked z50 for many years as my go to tobacco and something has changed, burns unevenly and has a bunch of tongue bite - the old version never bit the tongue. I don't smoke this anymore.
I wish u would go back to the old Black cordial this tobacco has a bite and smokes nothing like the Atlantis sorry for the spelling but I cant smoke the Sutliff please let me know if you may think about restocking it or I guess u will have to call me a former customer
Mild, flavorful smoke with a nice room note. Burns well and complete. It will probably become one of my stronghold tobacco(s). Nice with a little something to drink after supper or with a cup of java in the morning.
First discovered Black Cordial (z50) in Oxford, England back in the winter of 2002. It was being sold by Fred Tranter under the shop name "Extravaganza". Upon my return to U.S. I learned Altadis was marketing z50 under the "Century" label over seas. Now Sutliff, which was once owned by Consolidated, is now under Mac Baren ownership. Hopefully the consistency will remain the same since z50 is one of the finest tobaccos in its class and has been my goto ol faithfull aromatic ever since 2002. If you like balanced aromatics that are rich, sweet and bite-less you must try z50. Compare the reviews on this website with others in this bulk Sutliff class. Z50 is a must have!
