A++
I have just recently got into smoking and at first I got the sweetest flavored stuff I could find. It was absolutely awful. I got this bulk just to try something new and it’s a much better fit for what I’m looking to smoke.

Any Way You Slice It, It's Pretty Good!
I am definitely a Virginia and Va/Per lover. I have recently been having an affair with burley, particularly the lighter, OTC blends. I've come to like most burley-based blends very much. I guess my tastes in pipe tobacco are fairly eclectic: I also like light English blends and certain other latakia blends - long as they aren't "lat bombs". But I find myself always coming back to Virginia and Va/Per blends. So, after the fling with burley, I wanted to get several good quality Virginia-Va/Per blends for a nice change. Sutliff's Virginia Slices was one of them. I must say that the presentation is very interesting and attractive. These slices are cut considerably longer than most other flakes I've seen. I read that this is a European style. These slices rub out pretty easily, but my preferred method of flake preparation is a variation of "fold & stuff" I think of as "wad & stuff". So, I pulled a slice into a shorter section, then took a bit and simply wadded the tobacco into a ball and stuffed it into the bowl of my pipe. I repeated until the bowl was full. Bag note: smells like fresh, good ole tobacco. I couldn't detect a topping. This tobacco lights and burns readily to a fine, gray-white ash, and very few re-lights required. As with other Virginia blends, smoke this slowly to get the most flavor. Sip it! The smoke was cool and lasted a long time. Now, I usually have difficulty tasting the citrus notes everyone describes with Va blends. Plenty of grass and hay and all that, but citrus always seems to elude me. But with this blend, I was able to detect it! That sorta citrusy taste was subtle and would shy away whenever I tried to reach for it, but I was definitely getting it with this blend. Some earthiness in there, too, but lots of good, solid tobacco taste. Most Virginias leave a good after-taste for me, and Virginia Slices is no exception. It is also not hard on the tongue provided you don't huff n puff it. My favorite straight Virginia is G.L. Pease "Union Square"; Virginia Slices isn't going to beat it, in my opinion. But, just the same, this blend is tasty. Yes, it is a basic tobacco that is one- maybe two-dimensional. But, sometimes that's what is needed. This blend is good, especially for the price. I recommend it!

Sutliff vs Orlik
Perfect match to Orlik Golden Sliced. If you like OGS, then, give this a try. You won't be disappointed, still the same citrus, grassy taste that you expect. Also, you might want to try "Peter Stokkebye" Bull's Eye Flake, it seems a little sweeter and less citrus, but, still a good substitute. I'll be ordering more on a regular basic. Thanks again P &C for the Top Notch Service and products

Not as aromatic as I have expected. More of an evening smoke. Finishes well though.

Excellance in a Virginia Flake
This is a lovely 5 star flake, as it has all the characteristics that I am looking for. It rubs out easily, which makings filling a breeze. It burns cool and is not heavy on the tongue. The nicotine level is very low, which I prefer. It is best smoked slowly to bring out the flavor. I gravitate to milder tobaccos and this fills the bill for me. A good all day smoke for those who prefer finess over strength.

Excellent Flakes
Love the product, and I must not be the only one, as they seem to have trouble keeping it in stock. Almost as good as Dunhill Flake, but at the bulk price, this one's well worth a try...

Virginia
Its a decent virginia flake not as citrusy or sweet as macbaren offering yet it still is young and it needs age. Better for blending than solo play. Room note is of virginia (hay) burn quality is decent as well, its not very cheap but worth giving it a try.

My new Go-To blend!
Great stuff at a great price. Similar to Dunhill Flake, only milder. Great all day smoke, and goes great with black coffee...

Its a plain tobacco, no potpourri, no fruitiness to it, its a mans tobacco... not suggested for the noob

A Nice Virginia
I was surprised how nice these slices are. They arrive a bit broken but that's alright by me as I rub out most flakes anyway. This tobacco lights very easily and smokes like a dream when I smoke it very slowly, almost as if I am 'breath smoking' it. But then VA's aren't made for aggressive puffing right? So that's how I like it. it has a nice mildly sweet hay/citrus flavor that stays with me awhile after my pipe is finished. I like to smoke VA flake in a somewhat narrower chamber than my burleys and it smokes just fine. I AM planning on purchasing a half pound or so just to have on hand due to all tobacco prices coming on the rise thanks to the good ol' FDA

For a man who likes to slow smoke.
Great for blending and even amazimg all by itself. Good slow smoke while sitting on the back porc. Pairs nice with sweet tea.

Great mildly sweet VA Flake
A very good mildly sweet VA flake which is very similar to Peter Stokkebye's Luxury Navy Flake without the pinch of Perique that blend contains. A very nice price and mild enough with sweetness that I could see many smoking as a daily blend. The loose flakes break up very well and the moisture is at a perfect level to rub out and smoke immediately.

Good stuff, good price.
To my taste this nearly straight Virginia comes with a high water content (for shipping and storage purposes). I dried the pound out without separating the "hanks" of tobacco in the opened cardboard shipping box. I arranged the tobacco in approximately one layer. After three hours in a 85 degree room the weight was down noticeably and the surface was dry so I jarred the pound in a 2 quart Ball jar. I could tell by touch that the casing was holding about the right amount of water. I let her set for a few days so that the moisture would equalize throughout the jar. Smokes very nice (considering the price). Propylene glycol humectant is noticeable but tolerable (enough to feel on the fingers) - I am very sensitive to too much glycol, prefering glycerin and sugar to glycol generally. However, Virginia Slice has just a reminder of glycol and not a full mouth searing blast. After you get the water out, that is. There is a light topping, not objectionable. Lots of bulks (but not C&D) are shipped with high moisture content. Sam. Gawith Full Virginia Flake in the can is generally too moist, and bulk comes way too moist to jar properly, but nonetheless FVF is a wonderful tobacco well worth the cost. I am quite pleased with my Sutliff Virginia Slice order. I generally add a little dark fired and/or decent burley to it. I used to use Syrian Latakia for that sort of job as I do not tolerate Cyprian well, and have little taste for Perique these days. I have never been able to finish a bowl of any aromatic. Everybody has "a different body chemistry" and my experiences are very unlikely to be a reliable pipe smoker's guide for the reader except for those who understand what I have written. Best of luck to all, a decent pipe and a decent tobacco are wonderful.

Good basic VA
If you're looking for a decent VA flake in slices that's cheap and just a good basic VA, this is what you want to get. It's like a cheaper bulk 2nd best to Dunhill Flake.

A good budget virginia flake
This doesn't have much complexity but it is mild, sweet, and consistent. A good all day smoke for someone who loves virginias.

Lovely!
My first impression, besides noting how exceptionally long these slices are, was that this resembles Macbaren Virginia Flake...in several ways. This is a nice balance of brighter and dark Virginias. Partially rubbed out, Macbaren style, clump and stuff Danish style, this blend s'mores very, very close to the Macbaren version...rubbed out fully, it reminds me of Virginia #1, both in smoking characteristics and in flavor. This is not a flavor bomb, but smoked slowly, it is very enjoyable and subtly sweet. The aroma isn't quite as sweet as Virginia #1, but not objectionable, either. It gets along well with both briar and cobs. I find it to smoke a little on the hot side, but this reminds me to slow down, which is a good thing. This is a solid four star tobacco for me. Where it picks up its fifth star is as a blending tobacco. It really shines here! I love blending this with Comoy's Cask #4 for an amazingly flavorful VaPer...my all day smoke lately. It also plays well when blended with English blends to add a touch more sweetness. This has become a staple tobacco for me. I was very surprised and pleased, especially for the great price point.

Easy to work with.
This is a mild, no bite, easy to work with tobacco. It is great to mix in with other tobaccos to increase the burn rate without really changing the flavor profile. On it's own it is no flavor bomb but it is certainly enjoyable.

Intriguing Presentation, Solid Navy Slices.
I ordered 4 oz. of Sutiliff's offering of Navy Flakes because I found the large, long slices to be intriguing. The smoke wasn't really disappointing, just not intriguing. It's a solid representative of Navy Slices, not spectacular. Don't get me wrong, it makes for a nice smoke. I was just so enamored of large slices I fooled myself into expecting them to be borderline erotic. That's not a knock on them. As always with Virginias, they should be smoked slowly for best flavor. I'm going to pick up on 8 oz. this week while P&C is running the $2/oz. sale on all Sutliff bulk tobacco.

A versatile tobacco
This tobacco gave a totally different smoke experience in a bog pipe than it did in a briar pipe. Blends well with a wide variety of tobacco and smokes great by itself too! I prefer it in a bog pipe.

Sublimely Mediocre
I have never written a review before, but I feel compelled to write one about this extraordinary tobacco. It is extraordinarily mediocre, so mediocre that it is sublime. Stonewall Jackson once tried buttering his bread. He decided that he enjoyed it so much, that he should never butter his bread again. If you have such a personality, then look no further for an all-day, every-day smoke. I myself do not have such a personality; I love this tobacco for two reasons: The first is that it has almost no flavor of its own (it does have a slight hay-like note). It burns cool, lasts a long time, and has a mild nicotine content. This makes it perfect for blending. I like to create Perique- and Latakia-heavy blends. Those tobaccos can be challenging to smoke straight, but this Virginia nicely rounds out the flavor and burn characteristics of Latakia and Perique (I like to use 25% to 33% Virginia with 66% to 75% Perique and/or Latakia). The second reason is that I love my pipes. I care for them, treat them well, and they provide me with an immense amount of pleasure. Each has different characteristics—a different personality if you will—and work best with different tobaccos, packing techniques, cadence, etc. Each block of briar is unique, and smoking this tobacco allows me to taste the unique flavor of each briar, to become intimately familiar with each pipe itself. I feel like I am smoking the pipe rather than smoking tobacco in the pipe (note that I am not talking about the flavor you get from overheating and scorching the bowl). It is an extremely sensual experience. However, with that said, if this tobacco were to have nothing but this tobacco available, I would quickly become bored and quit smoking.

Nice simple tobacco
This is a nice tasty flake. It has a nice sweet grassy flavor that holds strong through the end. I plan on keeping this on hand.

Not bad once dried out. Too fragrant right out of the bag.
Customer Testimonials
This is a first-rate VA Flake! It is naturally sweet, very smooth, reasonably priced and is a perfect pure Virginia all-day smoke. Cut into beautiful large strips, it also ages very well. I highly recommend it!
This is an excellent natural quality flake tobacco of bright, mature Virginia's. I tried it and immediatley re-ordered. Pipes and Cigars offers this at an outstanding price. So, if you like Virginia Flake tobacco you will not be disappointed. Jay Cincinnati, Ohio
I can't help but feel like it needs something, but the nature of the bulk shipping turns this very (very, very...) long flake into a flake that's already rubbed out. It still kept some compact strands to "thicken" a leaf blend, making this a good way to make some of my favorite blends more outdoor ready. The flavor is so mild that it's almost a filler, but a good quality one for the price point.
Very elegant, appetizing and flavoring element to any other Sutliff tobacco.
If you like the red tin smoked by all shrewd judges, then you should try this! Also a very nice pricepoint!
