Sutliff Voodoo Queen

Voodoo Queen is a unique approach to the light Latakia blend. A light amount of Latakia and a hint of Perique are combined with Virginias and Burleys that have been imbued by a bit of mocha, pressed and roughly rubbed-out for a long, cool burn. For aromatic English fans and those who like chocolate flakes, Sutliff Voodoo Queen is a must-try.

Becoming my favorite everyday smoke.
Becoming my favorite everyday smoke. Latakia on the light side, not too heavy. Perique always welcomed with Virginia.

So glad I gave it a try.
TLDR: voodoo queen is an excellent bridge between traditional aromatics and medium to full body English blends. It is what I give to my friends when they are looking to try something a little stronger. I think that it is worth noting that I think tobacco reviews are a little bit silly. Because everybody’s cased and perspectives are different. So I think it is probably better for me to say what other tobacco I have liked and then perhaps if it is similar to you, you will like this as well. Firstly, I am an amateur, I have been smoking for around 15 years but I only ever smoked Lane BCA with my friends. Which, I did not particularly like and I would now say I do not like at all. Secondly, I am currently engaged in broadening my tobacco horizons. About six months ago finally realized that there were a lot more pipe tobacco blends in the world and after a fair amount of tobacco reviews read online, I purchased my first classy tobacco, Mississippi river by Seattle pipe club. Which I really like. But it is on the very sweet side and I wanted something a little less sweet. I tried several other tobacco’s one worth noting was Boswells Northwoods. Which I would put as a robust Latakia blend. Not at all sweet. I was looking to get some thing with less sweetness Dan Mississippi river but more than Northwoods. Voodoo queen was the ticket. This tobacco is fantastic! I bought enough to share with my friends. (also, if you are a cheapskate like I am it is worth noting how much less money this blend costs than the aforementioned lens in this review.) In summary, if you feel like aromatics lack flavor but you feel like English blends have way too much oriental leaf, then you will most likely love this blend as much as I do.

GREAT alternative to Gurkha "Urban Legend"
I bought this to try as a cheaper alternative to Gurkha "Urban Legend", as that is my favorite English blend to date, and the descriptions are almost exactly the same. This is a VERY close alternative and much cheaper, with the only real differences being that this is a bit more Perique forward, and the mocha flavor is a bit more up front. Sweet, smokey, and spicy. It does smoke a little more wet than Urban Legend, but that could just be because of the difference in moisture content between the two. Buy some and try it, you won't regret it!

I give it for star
I give it for star today. There is a chance it could be a five when I get through the bag.

Voodoo Queen
I have smoked this exclusively for the past year. Without a doubt it is a consistent smoke. Very smooth without bite or harshness. The aroma is somewhat off putting, but other than that I highly recommend it.

Tongue tingling!
In my very limited experience, this is the most complex smoke I've tried so far and I mean that in the best way. I was really looking forward to trying Perique in a blend and this one advertised a lot of it, so I bought an ounce to try. What a find! I will definitely be getting much more of this one. As I'm getting into pipe smoking, I find myself enjoying more English blends and, of the few I've tried, this one has much less of the smokey Latakia note in the taste and aroma. The first half of the bowl (in a cheap Wessex basket pipe) mostly gave the sweetness, tang and grassy/hay notes of Virginia that I'm really coming to enjoy. There was that slight note of smokey Latakia through the first half, but it was not as forward and "footy" as in a more traditional medium English blend I've tried. I didn't detect the Burley at all at first. Halfway through the bowl, this stuff really opened up. It was as if each puff was different than the last for the the remainder of the bowl. The Latakia faded away and broad, heavy, nutty flavors of Burley came through and danced around. The Virginia tang faded in and out. The much-anticipated Perique tingle came on throughout and by the end my tongue was tingling! It was very different from regular tongue bite, though, and not at all unpleasant. In the latter stages of the bowl, I did detect a sweet, warm, dark scent and flavor that could have been the mocha coming through. It was really nice. I'm a loyal subject of the Voodoo Queen for sure!

Not coffee or chocolate...black tea!
First time I smoked this, I was a little disappointed. I get no "mocha" (coffee/chocolate) in this blend. However, having smoked the blend a good bit since, my impression is positive. Rather than coffee, this blend evokes unsweetened black tea. The mouth feel is unique, rather thick and creamy, which gives the added impression of some cream in the tea. The various components work very well together. Nicotine level is medium-low, making this an all day smoke.

Best I had
One of my favorite in the rotation and also to cellar. Try 2 oz today and jar up another 2 for 6-12 months...you won't be disappointed! It's like and English but with perlique...not an aromatic...but there is a slight note of something there. The cut is broken flake, big pieces that smoke well in small or large pipes....hands down best tobacco for price point.

Great, full, smooth smoke
One of my favorite ones! Goes great with a morning coffee or an evening Bourbon! Glad to see it in 16 oz size!
Customer Testimonials
Quite enjoyable. Nice latakia blend first and foremost. Not a lot of mocha taste, but is there in the room note and tin. Smokey rich & dark, but not complicated. I have no tounge bite from this blend. A unique cut, has some pressed Virginia and almost a loose twist like latakia. Glad I tried it and will get another ounce or two next order.

I enjoyed Voodoo Queen a couple years back and smoked some of my reserve today for the first time in over a year. For the life of me I can't remember why I stopped smoking this great blend because it was as good today if not better than I remember. The Latakia is smooth as velvet and the Perique tickles the back of my nose. This is a great tobacco and mild on the English blend side. It's moderately strong and the room note is pleasant.

One of my favorites, I find I'm a loyal subject of the Queen and keep returning to her court for that kick of Latakia. The broken flake packs well and burns for a long time without needing much tending but beware of that Latakia ghosting your pipe. Did I mention its got quite a bit of Latakia in it, not for the faint of heart.

Fantastic all day smoker. Spiciest of perique is balanced by smokey Latakia and Virginia sweetness. Complex and satisfying
RH of pembroke pines, FL
Voodoo Queen is an excellent outdoor cold weather blend, that steps onto the dark side of both of the perique and the latakia, giving a strong balance of tang and camp fire. I really don't recommend smoking this indoors, unless you hate the people in which you share the house or you are preparing the dwelling for demolition. Good stuff.
