Velvet is an American classic, made from ripe Kentucky Burley with a pleasant sweet note. It's a simple, uncomplicated pipe tobacco with a mellow flavor and aroma that will transport you back to the "good old days." If you have your pipe going for good part of the day, Velvet is a great choice - easy on the tongue and palate.
Unreal that my smoking has come to this since I started piping with the higher end baccy. I was pleased to find out that I can enjoy what some would say are lesser tobaccos. My eyes have been opened. Is Velvet on the same level as say Frog Morton? No, but I'm not always wanting a Cult or Frog smoke either. Velvet is a smooth, sweet and much to others dismay, good solid smoke. I'll be keeping this, Sir Walter and Half and Half on hand to enjoy and stretch my higher end stuff out.(not mix)P&C are my heros as I haven't a real tabacco shop near me and as always...smoke well my friends.
Old standard "drug store" blend. Very much in the American style. Pretty much a straight forward course cut burley. If there is a top note - it's lite, mainly just to enhance the natural "nutty" flavor and aroma of burley, seems that the main thing the top note adds is sweetness. Tin and room note is a typical of burley blends. Pleasant and not over-whelming. Lots of folks talk about the "bite" in burley. Burley is naturally more alkaline than VA's so there is going to be the possibility of bite. Personally, I've never noticed a bite to burley, each palate is different. This blend definitely needs some dry time prior to smoking. Don't expect to just open a pouch and smoke. When I smoke drug store blends I load the pipe the night before, by the next evening it's ready to go. Straight forward burley here. Burns well, but expect a few re-lights - that's true with any blend in this genre and burleys in general. Burns slow and cool. There is a reason why these blends are considerably less expensive and more available. As far as blends in this genre go, you could do a lot worse than Velvet. More flavor the PA, not as much topping as CH. As with all of these types of tobacco, it's going to vary. These are not top choice blends, they get the lesser leaf. Expect flavor variations. If you buy a pouch or tin and really enjoy it - use the same merchant and get a few more, because a few months down the road you may find the same blend having very different smoking qualities. This rule goes with ALL "drug store" varieties. If you get a crappy pouch, give it a few months and try again. Like all burley blends, a great caking blend - good for breaking in a new pipe. Burley - for whatever reason builds cake like no other. Burley blends also leave no discernable ghost - just a pleasant "tobacco" "nutty" ghost that marries well with anything else. Also not a terrible base for home blending. You can go lots of different directions with a base burley, such as Velvet.
Sunshine, rain and soil is all velvet has received before it is cased with a little brown sugar and packaged so I read in an old advertisement of Velvet in the early part of the last century. Although it does not contain Virginia tobacco, Velvet has a really nice subtle sweetness that accents the nutty burley taste. The room note is quite nice and not overbearing, I've been told its like oatmeal cookies. Inexpensive, nice burley flavor and no burley bitters, what's not to like?!!
This is a classic I remember when my uncle used to smoke the stuff when I was a kid and 20 years later I got my hands on this litte jem great taste and burn time. I will continue to get buy it from P&C.
Thought I would try this brand since it's been around for years. I will never try it again. Does not stay lit- bites my tongue hard -and the only way I can describe the taste is "wet cardboard"...mmmm. I'm definitely staying with prince albert for a good tasting cheap tobacco.
Velvet has been my favorite since I became a pipe smoker. Aroma has received compliments from Warsaw to Beijing. One day my dad ask me what brand it was. Turns out my grandfather smoked Velvet starting about WWI.
This is actually good stuff! It's like a slightly sweeter version of Half & Half. Smells great in the pouch and tastes pretty good. It's a little hard to keep lit, but I don't mind. At only $3.25 a pouch give this one a try, especially if you like Burley, which I'm beginning to like more as time goes on.
I've always been a fan of the old school burleys. It's a bit on the sweet side compared to Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Half and Half, etc. It's a sweet flavor that I can't quite identify. Velvet is also a bit on the damp side. It can take me quite a few relights to get a bowl burning, but I still enjoy it. It's a smooth smoke and it never bit me--even with lots of puffing to keep it lit.
This is one of those tobaccos that has been around forever it seems! I remember seeing in drugstores and grocery stores when I was a kid! I enjoy this in a MM cob pipe! A nice mild tobacco which I enjoy anytime of day! I have Velvet around when I want a no frills smoke!
I was pleasantly surprised by this old favorite. great taste and good room note . pouch note smells like coco great stuff.
