War Horse Bar

War Horse Bar is a plug tobacco made in the tradition of the long-missing Irish tobacco. Made of darker, earthier leaf, War Horse Bar has a singular top note added, and the tobacco is pressed and cut into plugs. The flavor and body are astoundingly stout, and is definitely meant for the experienced pipe enthusiast. If you love robust and bold pipe tobacco, War Horse Bar will become a staple for you.

War Horse is a smooth velvety smoke
My first time smoking this one; War Horse red has a smooth topping with a slightly sweet aroma, can be a bit headdy on first try, but you quickly get used to it. It has a very pleasant room note and smells great. Can't wait to try War Horse Green now! Will definitely want to keep a tin in my stock.

A good smoke, but a bit pale when compared to Mac Baren HH Bold Kentucky, it will be nice when I want something different.

Great taste
Great flavor, takes a little while to develop. It's very moist, but still burns well. Packs a punch of nicotine. I inhale from time to time, and this stuff goes straight to the brain!

High on my list!
Very good Virginia/Burley and mainly Kentucky flavor profile. It is one notch lighter in strength compared to HH Bold Kentucky. I smoke it after dinner so the nicotine isn’t an issue for me. I enjoy this tobacco often and the toppings give it a nice overall sweetness that is in the background along with the Virginia. I’m a non-aromatic Burley smoker and this tobacco is high on my list. It is smooth and medium to full taste with a great retrohale.

Go-To Favorite
War Horse Bar is my go-to tobacco for any time of day. It always smokes well, and has a rich, dark aroma. Nothing beats a classic Virginia/Kentucky.

Just delicious! Don't be fooled
Just delicious! Don't be fooled by the name, it's sweet but not overly; with a unique flavor. Smokes with little relights and burns clean cool and dry. Highly recommended! The Green is also a must try.

Nice Strong Smoke
I came to smoke pipes, by way of smoking cigars, and this tobacco is a real nice segue into pipes from cigars. Deep and earthy, with a retrohale very similar to a mild to medium cigar. Definitely a tobacco I'll keep on hand to enjoy when I want a cigar but don't want to invest an hour smoking one.

Exponentially more tollerable than the green
While I enjoyed this exponentially more than the green. It's still not on the favorites list. It is good enough for the occasional change of pace. And offer's a good amount of depth. It's not as sweet and overpowering as the green. But, still has plenty of the Licorice/Anise flavor. Yet, allows you to find other notable flavors like brown sugar/molasses, and earthiness. Nicotine is in a medium to high level. Not something I would look for first thing in the morning due to the flavors. Maybe more of an after lunch or dinner smoke. Some time when I am burned out on the regulars.

One of the best blends ever
I love it! Just wish there was a bigger package. To understand what my flavor palate is: I smoke two too three bowls of Bold Kentucky a day. That is my favorite. This one is a very close second.

This stuff is grate. I'm new to pipe smoking. This has to be one of my favorite blends so far. Plenty of bit, smooth, with a grate flavor. It almost taste like chocolate with out being an aromatic.

A nice Change-Up from the norm
This one is definitely different and very enjoyable. I've heard many people try to describe what it tastes like and here is what I taste. A box of chocolate covered cherries with the sugary liquid filling. That's exactly what I get from this blend. Sometimes I get a little bit of a brownie taste but still with the cherry flavor. As I get into the last third of the smoke I start to taste liquor added to the mix which is nice. I'm normally an English / balkan/ vaper guy but I'm really starting to get into these blends with Kentucky in them.

War horse a cool and beautiful smoke
As a young man my father actually worked in Murrays tobacco factory the original manufacturers of war horse that was situated on Sandy Row Belfast Northern Ireland. He and his brothers were all pipe smokers as most men were at that time. Im talking about the 1930s here Dad advised me that if ever I smoked a pipe Warhorse though a strong smoke was the one to choose as it was the best. Now I live in California and smoke warhorse and continue to do so as it is such a pleasant smoke. His explanation was that a light tobacco gave a hot smoke to the mouth whereas dark heavy tobacco resulted a cool and rich smoke. So try it out guys.

My absolute favorite! Gobs of beautiful smoke. When I opened the tin the aroma of the plug took me back to my youth when my granddad would take me to tobacco auctions.

Wonderful stuff but too strong for a regular smoke
I wish that P&C would let us update old reviews, but they don't so I have to make my update a new review. So, I will just say that I was wrong about the nic hit. This is strong stuff and it seems that every time I have had more than a half bowl or in a big pipe, I get nic dizzy sickness. This is strange because I come from the Nicaraguan cigar world. I relegate this to small smoking windows when I want the most bang for my time. It seems that my 4 1/2 tins will likely last me the rest of my life! Great stuff, but too strong to enjoy regularly. It's quality so I will keep the 5 star rating.

Really Strong Tobacco
After 60 years of pipe smoking this was my first experience with plug tobacco. It was not hard to prepare it for smoking. The catalog indicated this was a strong tobacco. It was accurate. In future I will use a small bowl pipe. The flavor was pleasing and my wife said the room note was nice. For me it is not an all day smoke. However, as an after dinner or occasional smoke it is fine. I would recommend this tobacco to an experienced smoker that wants a full bodied tobacco.

Just about as perfect of
Just about as perfect of a aromatic for me personally. Was hesitant on first purchase since I'm not an ARO kind of guy but this one is my all time favorite. Bought two more tins before my third bowl out of the first. Wonderful licorice taste and nice mild smoke. Careful to just sip because it will get hot.

Stout, Classic Plug match
I'm not old enough to have smoked the original by any means, but this is a great stout smoke completely on it's own merits. If you like Dark Plug/flake, and stronger smokes from the likes of Gawith Hoggarth or Sam that have a perfect touch of mild flavoring I think you're going to love this tobacco here. Russ did a very superb job recreating this beauty.

Just the best. WHB is all I smoke now after years of smoking English blends. The valerian aromatic is so subtle and complementary. I don't like green by the way but might stop smoking if they ever stop making WHB!

The Guinness Stout of Pipe Tobacco
I describe it to friends as the Guinness Stout of pipe tobacco. A hearty, thick, richly delicious tobacco guaranteed to keep you warm on a cold winter's night. Upon opening a fresh tin I swear I smell my grandmother's plum pudding. The perfect tobacco for the accomplished pipe smoker.

Great stuff
As I posted in a pipe group, while I know that my grandfather never smoked this, the aroma of the tobacco is so close to whatever he smoked, that it brought me back to when I was a kid poking around his stuff and enjoying the aroma of his pipe tobacco. I have several of his pipes and I will smoke it in them. It's a rich full smoke. No bite. You get that taste on the retro. It's almost vanilla cherry like, with a tin note close to playdough, although no play dough in the smoking. I do not detect the licorice that others talk about but it's probably there. I don't know what it smells like to others, but I imagine similar to what most people may think about when they think of pipe smoke. My wife says that the tin note reminds her of stuff her grandfather smoked, but I smoke outside and I have no feedback on what it smells like to others when it's actually being smoked. As a long time cigar smoker, I never get a nic hit (as in, dizzy) from pipe tobacco and this is no exception. It is a full bodied smoke, however. I first ordered it with an order from another place but when it went on sale at P&C I quickly ordered 4 tins for my cellar.

This tobacco is one that you best be ready for when you light it up. It has a wonderful room note and flavor. It burns clean and slow. It also presents no bite. But its strong. Like, don't smoke this on an empty stomach! I LOVE IT!

This isn't going to be a fancy review like some but it love this stuff. Burns pretty good and is in the medium to medium high strength range, for me at least.

Good stout smoke. Perfect way
Good stout smoke. Perfect way to wrap up a hard day's work, and or after a good meal. Has a unique top note, almost floweral which is alittle strange being so strong. Definitely one of the top 5 strongest tobacco I've ever smoked. I've been smoking pipe for 6 years. The only reason I didn't give it 5 star is only because the last third of a bowl has a hard time staying lite. If you can Appreciate strong no B.S. Tobacco war house will not disappoint. Just don't buy it all, i want more.

A pleasing and moderately strong smoke, recommended!
I have been wanting to try this, as when I was a young man I actually was able to smoke the Gallagher War Horse, which came in a large, very firm brick. That old variety was a very potent, slightly aromatic Irish smoke... the new one here comes in a moderately pressed bar, easy to prepare either with a small knife or just using your fingers. The tin note is a very pleasant combination of quality tobacco with a hint of clove. I didn't really pick up much more flavoring than that light hint of clove. As it comes from the bar the moisture is fine, in the pipe it's a moderately strong tobacco, in terms of flavor and nicotine. At best, it might be described as mildly aromatic, and the room note is more pleasant than say a straight English or semois, not quite as crowd pleasing as a Lane BCA type full aromatic. Smokes well, with one or two relights, and left an end-of-the-pinky-size dry dottle. No bite, no gurgle. No particular concerns for ghosting as well, have smoked half a bar in a Peterson spigot 408 without noticing any kind of aftertaste left in the pipe. If you're looking for a good medium strong well smoking quality tobacco with a very very light sweet hint of clove in the smoking, this is definitely something to be trying. I bought two cans to try and I can see keeping a can or two around in the future. Only complaint is the beautiful label is marred by the regulatory warnings! If my memory from over 30 years ago can be trusted, the old Gallagher variety was a good deal stronger in nicotine and flavor; however this is a pretty potent smoke on its own, closer to a medium strong in terms of taste. Very pleasantly surprised, and a very enjoyable smoke!

I gifted this War Horse
I gifted this War Horse Bar of tinned tobacco to my young friend, Mr. Sam Bebout. He is a newcomer to pipe smoking enjoyment and this is his review. 4/5 stars War Horse Bar is a very high quality tobacco. This is immediately evident by the soft, sweet tin note and and the nicely assembled crumble cake. Although it's primarily comprised of dark fired Kentucky, it is not an in your face blend, but rather, a smooth, slightly aromatic experience with a slight cherry-vanilla flavor pushing up the tobaccos. It has a very nice nicotine hit (not too strong but noticable) and a pleasant after taste. I would highly recommend it to someone looking for something stronger than your average aromatic but smoother than your average English. Will be purchasing again.

Love it
What a blend! I had never smoked anything with quite the body and flavor that this tobacco has. The tin note almost reminded me of dare I say a can of Skoal Cherry? It surely didn't taste like it, but that was just my initial reaction to the smell. The flavor was very nice. The Dark fired Kentucky really stood out, but I also picked up hints of licorice and cherry. I had also read that there was a strong nicotine kick, and there definitely is. I smoked half of the bowl and saved the other half for later in the day. For being so bold it was very smooth, and didn't burn hot at all. Packed well and wasn't too moist out of the tin. I'm definitely wanting to try the War Horse Green now. Wonderful.

Strong & Smooth
I found this tobacco very interesting. The aroma reminds me of the smell of brand new leather shoes. It burns at a nice pace and billows with smoke and no bite. Not my everyday smoke but it's a treat for me about every third day.

Warhorse review
This was great right out of the tin. Once I got it broke up and packed it was perfect. Nice little earthy note in the background, with a subtle pear taste. Was a tad tough to get lit but once it got going all I can say is wow! Now I like a strong tobacco with a hearty nic hit to it and this was spot on. Perfect late night smoke paired with a brandy, cognac, or hot tea. Glad I got two tins will be ordering more.

Surprisingly pleasant
The tin note kicks strong with a fruit and spice. It taste amazing in the back of the mouth. I have a collection of tobacco and I have a feeling I will finish this tin fairly quickly. It's definitely a desert.

Yup - that’s good!
My first foray into a DFK was Jackknife Plug - and it almost put me off entirely. But, thank goodness for perseverance and second chances, I decided to give War Horse Bar a try, and I’m very glad I did. The plug is incredibly user-friendly to prepare - no knife needed - and burns wonderfully when crumbled. The flavor is smooth and strong. Dark and woodsy, with a hint of floral anise-like flavor that compliments and doesn’t overwhelm. Excellent with a strong black cup of coffee, and hoo boy does it pack a nicotine punch. Kicks like a destrier, but doesn’t bite. Not an all-day smoke, but a great change of pace from my usual aros and kakes.

a good treat
an exceptional blend. very robust and has a great top note which carries over to the taste. it is on the strong side which is why i gave it only 4 stars, but that is just me, if you like strong robust blends i say go for it but i dont think its an all day blend- more like a treat

I can't decide if I like this or hate it.The tin note is just strange. Not like anything I've encountered before. It smokes nicely,no bite, and the wife likes the room note, which should make it a home run, but,I just can't warm up to the strange aroma. I'll try it again and see what happens, stay tuned.

Flavorful and enjoyable
I liked War Horse Bar better than Mac Baren HH Bold Kentucky. Both are full-flavored but the Mac Baren HH Bold Kentucky is a nic bomb and had me very buzzed within just half a bowl. The War Horse Bar was woody, smooth, full flavored, and didn't burn hot

Riding the Warhorse!!!
Excellent!!! I'm only been smoking pipes for 6 months or so (over 50, never a cigarette smoker, and rarely smoked cigars). I've been "cutting my teeth"mostly on aromatics and OTC blends. Lately I've been dipping my toes into the non-aromatic, and English blends. When I first filled my bowl and lit up, I braced myself for the onslaught of War Horse Bar. What I found was a surprisingly smooth and mellow smoke with a good tobacco flavor. Definitely more nicotine then my usual blends, but nothing that made me ill, just a a little "buzzy". A great tobacco to smoke after a good steak dinner. Started the tin, and I already ordered 2 more.

One of my most have tobacco's!
The flavors from this kake like plug is superb. Easy smoking will very little bite. The room note is simply amazing. I do recommend crumbling up the amount you want to use and allowing to dry for a moment, before puffing.

Better than I thought
I wasn’t expecting much, but found I got More than I was expecting . This didn’t have such a licorice flavor as I thought it had. It turned out it had a deeper yet subtle licorice flavor; and not in your face flavor. Great for a beginner and pro at same time. I will buy again.

A suitable substitute for Ready Cut
War Horse Ready Cut is one of my favorite tobaccos of all time. This bar version doesn't have the smoothness as the ready cut and seems considerably stronger. The Ready Cut only gives me a little lump in my gut sometimes, if I smoke it on an empty stomach, but the BAR wants to knock my willy down in the dirt! If I'd tried Bar first, I might not have been as impressed, but I think it's a suitable alternative to Ready Cut, and maybe it'll smoothen up a bit with some age. (I tend to think loose tobacco ages faster than plugs, which might explain the difference.) It's not quite a plug -- more of a pressed kake, so you don't need a knife; you can just pinch off a piece and rub it between your fingers directly into your bowl, which makes this tin travel in your pocket well without making a mess of dottle outside the wings of the paper insert. If you liked the taste of this, but it knocked you down too much, try the Ready Cut, which is just a tiny step down in strength -- the momma bear of strong tobaccos.

First notes of smell were that of raw tobacco. It smokes pure and cool and burns long. Easily breaks apart without a knife. Several compliments from older women saying it smell's like what their dad or grandpa smoked. A definite must have in a smokers celler.

Heavy duty
This is a great tobacco it's strong full-flavored pairs well with a strong cup of coffee. This is in my regular rotation now and by far my favorite. This is one of the few tobacco's that I can actually taste the nuttiness in the flavors in it not sure what all the flavors are but they taste good to me.

Great tobacco even for a newbie.
As a very new pipe smoker I was a little hesitant to try War Horse Bar. When I first opened the tin I knew that smell ,like it was something from the past but I still can not place it. When smoking it is indeed a bit stronger than what I was used to but not overbearing. It has a almost moss like taste and smell,it lights easy and stays lit. My girlfriend loves the room note

A Solid Horse to Bet On
Pipes and Cigars has a winner here. The tobacco is fantastic; it's easy to prepare, pack, light, and smoke. It tastes great. The fire-cured Kentucky has a unique and delicious flavor, like it was cured by burning cedar or some other wood not normally used to fire-cure tobacco (yet, it does not taste like latakia). The aromatic topping is very mild and complements the Kentucky perfectly. The red Virginia component is noticeable, and very pleasant. When you pack your pipe, just rip small chunks off the plug and pack them into the bowl more or less intact. The moisture content is perfect fresh out of the tin for smoking the tobacco in this manner. If you rub this stuff out, it burns too quickly and you won't get much flavor. I highly recommend that you try this tobacco—even if you have tried Warhorse Green and hated it (as I have).

Two thumbs up!
Not sure on the blend or the "topping", but i really like this tobacco. Really stiff plug to cut but it crumbles easily and packs well. Burns well and left very little if any moisture. I think this would be a fantastic crossover blend between aros and englishes. Ordering more come payday.

Great smoke
Good flavor, tin note and room note. Only complaint is its is more of a kake than plug. It has a tendency to crumble up a little small and sometimes block the air flow. Other than that it's great!

Very Pleasant and Relaxing
This and War Horse Green are my first plug tobaccos. I was a little nervous about trying something other than a Cavendish or Latakia. I'm glad I did!
