War Horse Ready-Cut

War Horse was a popular brand of pipe tobacco in Ireland, and it gained a following throughout the UK, as well. It was known for being a stout blend of tobaccos with an earthy, spicy flavor and full body. The War Horse Ready-Cut was made until the thirties, but disappeared. A group acquired the brand with the intention of bringing it to a new generation of pipe enthusiasts. The first entry in the revived brand is a blend of hearty mahogany Burley, bold dark-fired Kentucky, matured Virginia and a bit of Perique, with a light, traditional combination of flavors that never intrudes upon the real tobacco flavor. If you long for a tasty and robust pipe tobacco, War Horse Ready-Cut should be your first choice.

A boot to the head
Very spicy and forward, nothing subtle about this one. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes you want (or need) a kick to the head and this is the one to deliver said kick. Plus it’s Irish, which is always a good thing. But maybe I’m biased.

Nicely balanced.
I've nearly finished my first tin of this, so I think I've pretty well got it figured out. It's a nicely balanced blend. Slightly sweet virginias, peppery perique, rounded out with Kentucky. I believe the latter is what really gives this blend body. If you're into VaPers with more of a "bready" flavor ( a la Lane 125th Anniversary) as opposed to the sweet, grassy/fig flavors (a la Escudo) this is a blend to try. It's ready to smoke right from the tin and rarely requires a relight. Fairly consistent flavor throughout but the deeper i get into the bowl I get the taste of something I can only describe as similar to cheap bubblegum. Not deterrent, but once my palate picked it up, it couldn't forget it. I plan on keeping this stuff around for awhile, though!

I have thinking of trying
I have thinking of trying for a couple years now but not really into aromatic tobacco. I wanted change from English and vapor so decided to take the plunge into the unknown. I smoked several bowls a day until tin was gone and had to order more. When your recent sale came up I didn't hesitate to order 6 more tins. The taste is different than I have experienced before and I have not had a problem with toung bite. Will order again soon.

nice blue collar smoke
I call it a blue collar smoke because it 's pretty straight forward in tin note, flavor, and room note. Nothing fancy here, just an honest old -timey sort of tobacco. Since I only smoke at the end of the workday when I can really relax, I look forward to something more interesting. I use the Warhorse and similar blends as an aperitif',a first bowl as a warmup to the entree', usually my MacBaren's Navy Flake, which I find extremely flavorfull, but a challenge to smoke without it getting it too hot. I think Warhorse is a worthwhile smoke and would be a good solid addition to any smoker's cabinet.

Great great smoke!
Love this smoke. This is a no nonsense tobacco. If you like PA, or any of the codger burleys, you will love war horse. It has do much more flavor. I highly recommend this.

Not just strong
Next to, perhaps, fire itself, I think the combination of Perique and Dark Fired Kentucky may be one of man's greatest discoveries. It's a shame that this is famous, first, for being strong, when that's not nearly its greatest aspect. It's also smooth in a way that's hard to account for, given its components. I taste no top dressing, but they must've worked hard to come up with just the right kind and amount of dressing to smooth this out and make it all work together so well without wrecking it. It definitely needs no age before it goes in your mouth (unlike comparable "Cellar Series" products by different companies that require it). Zero harshness at all, which may encourage you to puff harder, and some people will experience a little bit of that stomach knot if they puff on it like a freight train, but it's not as bad as they say. I don't have to concentrate to taste it and I don't have to think about it. It's perfect for a twenty-minute dog walk when it's really cold outside and my nose is runny. I'm also an adult who doesn't necessarily enjoy getting to employ cutlery before I can have a smoke, so I appreciate that this comes in ready-cut.

FULL FLAVOR MANS SMOKE
FULL FLAVOR. This is a full flavor nicotine hit tobacco with a pure tobacco taste. No fancy about it. Im a cigarette smoker trying to convert to pipe only and WAR HORSE delivers a knockout punch of nicotine if you inhale a few times. It smells like Copehangen chew in the can but the smoke is a robust spicy flavor. Im definitely going to keep this around for when im craving a cigarette to give me a nic hit and avoid smoking a cigarette. NOT for beginner pipe smokers it will probably make you dizzy if your not used to nicotine. Definitely a MANS smoke.

Just A Good Smoke. Period. Russ Did Well.
There are many words to describe many different blends of pipe tobacco and this one is no different. If you like a strong, robust and relaxing style smoke without all of the extra stuff this is the blend for you. Not weak by any standards and has a lot of flavor. I'll be adding this one to the cellar with a couple of the others that I have tried

Earthy, smooth, spicy, and sweet.
Nice smoke with a medium kick, and an excellent room note. The sauce is not overdone, either, blending in well. Those who enjoy the taste of RYO tobacco should find something to like here, though the taste is easier on the palate.

New favorite
Smelled so good I wanted to eat it out of the can. Smokes smoothly, strong but not too strong. Burns steadily, very little bite. Reminds me a little of 10 Downing Street, a long discontinued tobacco from Lane. At least, as I recall 10 Downing--it's been a long time.

Good stuff
As a cigar smoker for over 20 years i enjoy this brand/blend. Lots of flavor, good smoke amounts, full bodied. Only been smoking a pipe for a few months but thanks to blends like this it is a very enjoyable experience. Little tongue bite but nothing that cant be handled.

War Horse Wins by Furlongs!
All natural tobacco aroma waffs, from a very tightly sealed and up-grade wrapping inside. Just-right-for-me humidification right out of the tin. Wonderful pure, not-too-heavy straight tobacco taste and aroma. Not heady, but I smoke about half a bowl (breaking in a new high grade pipe). I intend to purchase more from P&C, and I applaud their outstanding effort in creating this highly recommended mixture.

Great Smoke
Great smoke, at first I opened the tin and was nauseated by the smell, it reminded me of a hamster cage, but I lit it up and it was phenomenal. Even burn right down to the bottom of the pipe. Great recommendation pipes & cigars!!!

The Warhorse
Wow! It lived up to expectations from everything I'd read about it, and seems to be the real deal despite one or two naysayers. The fact it was a go-to Irish smoke back in the day, was the first thing that caught my eye; then the descriptions of it had me convinced. As far as description goes, its already been covered above and by others. (bold, earthy, very burly, just a tad spicy but not too much tanginess imo; splendid overall including whichever other qualities one can conjure up. Its seems to go particularly well in a pipe that has been weathered with much Prince Albert or a similar simple burly tobacco).. I'm simply throwing in my word to join the accolade this tobacco truly deserves. I may even stock up on this one a bit in case it decides to disappear again

Best New Blend!
I enjoy this blend tremendously. I have smoked 5 or so tins already and have more for cellaring and current smoking. It's a burley forward blend that has hints of cocoa and is medium bodied. The nicotine is what I would consider mild, but may actually be more medium. I can't say enough about this blend. If you are looking for a complex nonaromatic smoke, this may be right up your alley. Keep it smokey!

Rubbed out Three Nuns
This is nothing more than "Three Nuns" that hasn't been spun into coins. That's it! So don't think that this a new blend or a new taste...it's just not. It is how every a great smoke just like the spun coin version (Three Nuns). This one will just get you to your first puff a little faster.

Earned Name WAR HORSE is.
This Tobacco is not for the novice pallet, Would definitely purchase again. One of the smoothest Tobaccos I have ever smoked. You have to have experienced a lot of Blends to appreciate this one. Thanks to P an C for offering it.

A must buy.
I was worried that War Horse was going to a really tough and strong English but I was greatly proven wrong. WH is categorized as an English but it also really sweet. If your one who prefers darker Virginia flavored blends you would definitely dig this. It's bold, smoky, a little spicy but with some slight tang and a small sweet note to it.

“Tasty and robust” is right!
I tried War Horse for the first time in a fine, big, ancient well-broken-in Danish billiard that’s a favorite of mine. War Horse smelled terrific on first opening the tin. It packed easily, lit beautifully, and smoked cleanly right to the bottom of the bowl, leaving only ash and a tiny dottle. “Tasty and robust” like the ad says is right! Only thing is ist’s pretty strong — I enjoyed it, but then I’ve been a dedicated pipe smoker since the 1970’s. I wouldn’t expect it to appeal to a first-timer or a newbie (which means more for myself!). Please make this an item you routinely keep in stock!

Warhorse
Bought 2 tins to try was I glad I did! For me it is a perfect blend? It has a nice tin note but you can't taste it , just pure tobbacco flavor. Will be buying more.

maybe too much for me
As a novice smoker, I may not have a sophisticated enough palette for this blend. Full bodied smoke. Flavor profile changed through the bowl. It is not a favorite for me, but something I'll try again down the road.

This is THE ONE
This is it. This is the tobacco I've been searching for. So much TASTE! Creamy, spicy, leathery, and somehow sweet too. Can't recommend this enough. Starts off slow, but builds fast. Gets more complex as it smokes. Im floored.

War Horse Ready-Cut
Probably the best new tobacco of the year. Introduced at the West Coast Pipe show this Virginia blend with burley, perique, and perhaps the most talented use of dark fired Kentucky is a treat. Perfectly tinned at the proper moisture level, it has a firm and decent strength sure to satisfy.

I Over Anticipated This One
I have been watching this from when it was first mentioned of it's arrival. With all the hype I set myself up for a downfall. Don't get me wrong here, the tobacco is what it is said to be. While I do like straight forward no nonsense type of tobacco smoke, this one fell short of what I had hoped for. Great Packaging, Nice Presentation, The Cut of the Tobacco is Good, DRY but that is good in the thought that you are not paying for water weight. The Tobacco itself was nothing more than Meh bordering on Bland. shattering my dreams of the upcoming Plug Version. Oh Well Live and Learn to wait for more reviews before purchasing.

Good blend
Good blend. It is robust without being too heavy, as the Virginia and the perique add a touch if sweetness and depth. The dark-fired is there too, but doesn't dominate. This one will definitely occupy a spot in the regular rotation.

Unique and very satisfying
I got this today after buying it just off the description. This is, without a doubt, the most unique blend ive ever tried. The tin note was fruity and floral. I was prepared for the actual smoking to be as such. Wrong. Its spicey and robust. Not overpowering in taste nor a kick in the teeth with strength. Its complex as hell. The room note was chocolate but i never tasted it. I cant really put my finger on all the flavors i was tasting, but it was ever evolving. So much going on with this blend. I highly recommend it.

Simply Equisite!
A really fine smoking experience. I've been a fan of Irish Flake since its release and enjoy a robust smoke, and what little I've been able to find referencing Irish tobacco blending practices, I find this topic very old-world. Upon opening the tin and taking a deep whiff, I get the smell of a freshly opened box of Del Monte's Dried Apricots. I don't get any anise as some have found. The cut was dry to the touch, but just right for packing and smoking. It took to the light very readily and smoked clean and dry to the heel. It reminded me very much of Erinmore Flake, but way better than Erinmore. I read an interview a while back where a long time Murray blender said the flavoring for Erinmore Flake was that of prune and apricot. I don't get the prune here, but I do get the apricot. I found the Erinmore to be a bit cloying, and although once a favorite, no longer is so. I smoke EF on rare occasion these days since I grew tired of the taste and found it nipped at my tongue a bit too much. War Horse is a different breed entirely. It has the strength of IrF and a very nice earhy, but sweet, fullness while smoking. I've never been a big fan of Perique, but I do detect its presence here and find it a very agreeable addition to the mix while adding a touch of spice to the tongue. Sweet all the way to the end, but not in a confectioner's way. The sweetness coupled with the earthiness is a combination I've not experienced before and find that I like it very much. An all around great smoking experience with a pleasant room note to boot. Thanks again to the folks at ST of Pa and Russ Ouelette for such a marvelous tobacco. I can't wait for the plug version to be released.
