Blending - Dark Fired Kentucky Burley

This is a little-known component that I use for a variety of purposes. It is a dark tobacco, similar to Burley that is cured over open fire, giving the tobacco a smokiness that is much more subtle than Latakia, a deep earthiness, and a decent wallop. I like to use a bit in a Latakia-based blend to give it a touch of sharpness, or to add body to Virginias. High in nicotine, moderate burning quality.

Please note: Some of our blending tobaccos arrive in a dry state from the manufacturer since they don't add humectants to these tobaccos. We aren't allowed by law to add any moisture to the tobaccos we sell, so they may arrive rather dry, but will rehumidify easily.

Strong but not overpowering, great on it's own
This is my go-to as a reformed cigarette smoker. Satisfies the nicotine craving but isn't too strong or overpowering. I get a BBQ aroma from the jar. I like is on its own or blended with Virginias, it even adds kick to aromatics. Mostly I smoke it straight and let it dry out a bit. The strands can be longer, so I cut it in a big bowl with scissors. Not as strong as other dark fired Kentucky's like Dark Birds Eye or Kendall Kentucky, but I think it's perfect as far as strength level for an all-day strong smoke. This is the first tobacco I've bought more than a pound of, and the P&C price is great. The pound bag said this is "Sutliff TS12", P&C still has the lowest price for it.

This is probably my favorite
This is probably my favorite mixture. Has a great aroma. Smokes slow and tasty.

Very good for dark fired lovers
This is great stuff and P&C are the only ones that sell it. Rich and pretty strong. I love Old Dark Fired and Bold Kentucky, but this is half the price and has a similar smoky, BBQ aroma. Sometimes it comes dry- ready to smoke or you can easily hydrate it. I love it on its' own or for blending. This is the first tobacco I've bought a pound of, that's how much I like it.

Quick and strong.
It's nice when I need a quick pipe with a strong kick.

I ordered this to blend
I ordered this to blend with an English, to give it a heavier nicotine kick. If I don’t get that relaxing nicotine calmness, what’s the point? By itself, it’s a bit harsh. But if you love the nicotine hit, this one will do it.

DFK
For me, DFK is a bit one dimensional and seems to burn hot and is harsh. BUt I do like to blend it with Cavindish and Latakia.

It is a great tobacco
It is a great tobacco to mix in with a sweeter tobacco, to give it that fired taste

My Favorite Strong Smoke
Smooth, smokey, rich, and powerful. I love this on its own and in blends with Green River cavendish and/or cigar leaf. Unlike Latakia, DFKB does not overwhelm the palate and it has a nice burley aroma. This is not for beginners to smoke on its own unless they are in the habit of chewing loose leaf tobacco and swallowing the juice. DFKB is extra rich in vitamin N. That it is currently on back-order makes me almost want to cry.

YOU CAN'T BEAT THIS BURLEY
This is a good burley, very tasty with a with a rich smokiness. It's meant to be sipped and burns cool. I mix it with Captain Black Original, giving the perfect amount of sweetness.

Dark Fired Kentucky... a front seat
Anytime I am concocting a blend of tobaccos that is, of course, primarily for taste but needs more nicotine, Blending-Dark Fired Kentucky Burley comes to my mind first. My current favorite homemade blend is a very simple one consisting of only three of my favorite tobaccos: black cavendish (vanilla), blending perique (which has a strength all its own) and Dark Fired Kentucky. The percentage of each is my secret, but I will say the Dark Fired Kentucky is allowed a front seat at this performance due to its flavor, light room note, consistency of color and burning characteristics and let's not forget its high nicotine content. Perique follows it closely.

Great on its' own or to add kick to blends
As I expand my palette from primarily sweet aromatics, I found the dark fired Kentucky's to be stronger and tasty when I want something different. This is a great blend and should add some kick to some blends. I tried a bowl of it on its' own and had no issues. Rich smoky taste and aroma. It also sells for a very fair price.

High nicotine and earthy, spicy flavor
A most excellent dark-fired burley. Rich, deep, smokey, woody. Smells like a burning campfire. Great for adding nicotine to weaker blends. I use this as about 1/4 of my blend to give it a real kick and make 1 bowl satisfy the craving. Blends great with a chocolate cavendish!

Great service but just missing one small item
I've just recently started ordering from P&C. After a rather negative experience with my local smoke shop (support local, right?) I found it better to order from online. A buddy of mine recommended P&C and I couldn't be happier. Fast, prompt shipping and I wish I had done this sooner. Well, on a recent order, I order a pipe nail. Small item, inexpensive, no problem. However, after digging through the box and the packaging I didn't find it. The Latakia and DF Kentucky arrived as ordered and I couldn't be happier. No big deal y'all. I'll just add that pipe nail to my next order. Thanks for all you do! Harris in CCTX

Oomph
I used this stuff very sparingly as i read that it has a very high nicotine content and a really intense smoky flavor. I used an oz in a 12 oz blend. I was having problems withbeing able to smoke slowly. I was puffing away on these other blends and smoking 5 or 6 bowls worth at a time. I added just a little of this to my blend and i got the satisfaction i was looking for. Im now smoking slowly and enjoying the subtle flavors of the blend that i spent weeks of doing research on. This gave my blend the boost it needed. It has a good moisture level and burns really well.

Great on its own or in a blend
I'm finishing a bowl of this straight right now. This a very rich, satisfying smoke that does not go harsh . It is the espresso of burley tobaccos. It blends very well with green river cavendish.

An important blending ingredient
Dark fired curing gets tobacco ready for sale quickly and preserves most of the nicotine. For this reason, some of the best pipe tobacco in the world uses dark fired Burleys and Virginias. The Dark Fired Kentucky Burley provides abundant nicotine, a rich smoky flavor, and a smooth-burning mixing ingredient. Throw in some red Virginia, Perique, and white Burley and you have a high-powered blend that you can smoke any time and enjoy.

All of my favorite tobaccos
All of my favorite tobaccos are disappearing! I tried this recently & was pleasantly surprised.

Requires less while providing more.
One of my favorites, a Virginia, requires a Burley to cool it and give it body. This dark-fired does that and actually with less than is required of regular Burley while actually enhancing the Virginia's natural sweetness.

Highly recommended for blending.
A little goes a long way to add some bass, body and smokiness to whatever blend you might find lacking or maybe just feel like kicking up a notch. Not as strong as I thought it might be smoked straight (which I did just to get a feel for it).

Reliable staple
Smoother and more smokey than some others(dfkb), but a bit less spicy. To be honest, I use it as my daily smoke, but some would be better off mixing it with a red virginia and a bit of black cavendish. Really, it mixes well with all sorts of tobaccos

Dark Fired Goodness.
Excellent blended or by itself. I recommend it if you want some good smoke. I smoke a pipe, but it was so good I figured I'd try a few hand rolls and it's equally good, although I prefer it in a pipe. Smoky(subtle), rich, shreds and ribbons of great quality, it's just about perfect to me.

Awesome Stuff!!!
I grabbed some of this to replace Latakia in my "American English" blend and it's perfect with a more subtle smokiness yet much larger wallop of nicotine! Awesome stuff!

This was a wonderful addition
This was a wonderful addition to a few of my home blends. It gave just the right amount of spice and smoky flavor. Love the American wood smell it gives off when smoking it. Harsh on its own but great for blending.

Feels like the first nicotine I ever used, every time. Who says you can't go back?
This. ^^^ Very happy and will buy again. I have also ordered pure Latakia, this DFK has a much less pungent/penetrating sort of smokiness.

Packs a punch
I wanted to try it straight for ryo since I have little experience blending. This is a good tobacco and is very much as advertised. Probably best as a blender. It was too strong for my tastes. As always great to deal with P&C.

Strong, Toasty, and Smoky
My couple of ounces of this arrived perfect for smoking right away. As the title says it's strong. So, I intend to use it for giving some bass to a couple blends that need some help. I do caution folks to remember that you'll get some smoky taste and a smoky aroma in the air around you. If you want to add that to your blend without using latakia, this is the one. I'll more than likely order more to add to some OTC blends that I have.

Dark fired burley
Very good for blending and mellow out your tobaccos. Works great with Seatlle Pipe Club, makes it burn lot longer and change up the flavor. I recommend it!

Customer Testimonials
Hands down this is the best tobacco that Pipes and Cigars sells, that nobody else sells!!! It has plenty of smokey flavor and vitamin N. and I just cannot say enough about this tobacco. The blending tobaccos at Pipes and Cigars are excellent and cannot be bought just anywhere. If you like dark fired, dutch style tobacco with lots of nicotine, then you are sure to love this. Its very potent so use sparingly.
JS of Pasadena, TX
This is the cornerstone of most of my blending. I like robust tobaccos and I require a large dose of nicotine. This gets the job done.
JD of Gardner, IL
This is an excellent Burley tobacco for adding some flavor to a blend. It goes really good with a Virgina because of its relatively high nicotine content.
JS of Pasadena, TX
Outstanding tobacco. Blends well with everything I've put together. Great 1:1 with Matured Virginia Cavendish for a hearty all day smoke.
