To me, tobacco is tobacco!
To me, tobacco is tobacco! What I like about Carter Hall is it's still available in 14 oz containers. Dealing with those 7 oz cans is a real pain.

Carter Hall .. Not what I expected
I will never give an OTC a bad review because I will always respect it . CH …I’ve been smoking pipe for years upon years , finally tried it recently , I’ve been patient with it, tried different methods, maybe I bought a bad tub I don’t know ..it’s harsh, it tastes like a very small step up from cigarette tobacco period. Room note : Marlboro Red cigarettes , tub note: smells good honestly. I’m sorry I just can’t get used to it. If I had to pick SWR Regular Vs Carter Hall..SWR Regular would blow CH out of the water. Carter Hall is extremely over rated if that being the tub I bought was legit. I will try again in the future.

It's both a good "beginner's"
It's both a good "beginner's" smoke and one I've kept coming back to. I love the flavor, myself, and appreciate the consistency of the blend for more than the last decade. It's my main "go to". It's also my recommendation for new pipe smokers as this "drug store" blend is about as fool proof and forgiving as it can get. Loads well, burns cool, and there is plenty of flavor without being overpowering. Can't go much wrong trying a pouch with your first pipe.

Everything about this classic all day blend is wonderful. This blend may not change your life…but it may change every day of your life. Mild flavor great burn and the room note is a crowd pleaser without being hard on the pallet. This has been my favorite otc blend for years and it’s not looking like it’s going anywhere.

An American Classic
A delightful blend that has been around for a long time and for good reason. It's easy to smoke and burns real nice and easy, and doesn't burn your tongue so it's great for beginners. A magic combo is fresh sweet tea or coffee and Carter hall. The little flakes of Virginia complement perfectly the light topping. I really love Carter Hall, Prince Albert and Lane Limited Ready Rubbed. I can't pick one classic drugstore blend but I can say that if all I had was Carter Hall I would be content. It's that good! Smoke it nice and slow to really get that heavenly flavor as you sip a favorite beverage and transport back to a simpler time. Cob, Grabow, Tea, Coffee & Carter. It's the American way. It should be made in the USA.

A tried and true classic!
This is my go-to blend when I want something lighter, yet flavorful and easy to smoke. It is as good as ever and although I have tried “match”-type blends, I prefer the original. If you don’t smoke, don’t start but if you are trying to switch to a pipe I recommend this as a great first blend!

My favorite, time and time again.
Been smoking pipes since college. I’m 64 now. The turmoil and upset plaguing our country has me leaning on my pipe more than ever. After all my years I’ve learned to really appreciate a good drink and my pipe in these current times. When evening comes I sit back with my simple transistor radio, listen to the latest news, and to take the edge off, I’ll light up a bowl of Carter Hall. It smokes easy, has a wonderful nutty flavor, no bite and goes well with a good scotch. The chaos in the world melts away. Carter Hall is a simple burley and Virginia blend that mildly satisfies and provides a very pleasant room note that harks back to simpler times. My dad used to smoke it. Everyone who’s around seems to gravitate to a seat near me. It’s not a fancy, expensive, potpourri tobacco. It’s for those who love a mild burley blend, that enjoy several bowls at a time. I highly recommend it. The best evenings are simply spent with my pipe and a bowl of Carter Hall.

Well Regarded
Carter Hall has a long heritage as a fine tobacco and rightfully so. It lights well and burns evenly all the way down to a fine ash with minimal relights. It is good for forming a nice cake on a new pipe too! It is a mild smoke with a nutty flavor from Burley tobacco and I have never experienced tongue bit. Can easily be a go-to all day smoke.

A Working Man's Pipe Tobacco
Carter Hall is an easy and cool smoking tobacco that is nearly impossible not to love. It's a clean-tasting and uncomplicated smoke. One of my favorite ways to wake up is a bowl of Carter Hall in a cob and a cup of good coffee. I would highly recommend this blend to a person who is overwhelmed by the vast and seemingly infinite amount of artisan blends out there.

Carter Hall
This was the first pipe tobacco I tried from the advice from a pioneer in the pipe smoking community, the great Matches 860. I thought it was just ok. But after trying a bunch of different expensive blends, from English to aromatics , I decided to pick up another pouch of Carter Hall and I just fell in love with it. Something clicked in my palate that I really like the natural tobacco taste along with a very light topping. I now only buy tubs of Carter Hall, I smoke the pouches too fast!! LOL. This is a great blend if you want a no nonsense tasty and great smelling smoke. For me it’s Prince Albert in the morning then Carter Hall all day!

Carter Hall Tobacco Order
The tobacco is for my husband so I cannot speak for it but I can speak for the site "Pipes and Cigars". I order the tobacco about twice a year -- I get 6 cans at a time. I have done this for several years. I see all the 'specials' that P & C run but never anything that would be something that I would order. I find it curious that there is never a 'discount' for volume orders or repeated orders. I feel like I am taken for granted !! Just saying !!

I like what I like.
My favorite smoke. I have tried so many tobaccos...and liked many of them. English to aromatics and even those in between blends. However, I still smoke CH every day and could not live without it. I guess I just like what I like.

Good grief this stuff is good!
One of the best, yet most unpretentious blends out there. Good grief this stuff is good! I love Dunhill blends, C&D blends, and many others...but I'm almost embarrassed to say it, but Carter Hall is my absolute favorite. The moisture and texture from the pouch or tub is nearly almost perfect. The pouch/tub notes to me is of earthy plumb. It is quite unassuming and on first light, the blend has very little flavor. Yet hold on for a few moments and get midway through the bowl and you'll experience pipe smoking nirvana.

Palate Reset?
CH is great by itself or as a blending base. I always keep some in reserve as CH has this amazing ability (for me at least) to reset my palate. So I am sure to smoke a few bowls a week just to enhance and reset my palate. I don't know why or how it does this, but it's really amazing. The flavors are so subtle that when they do poke their head out you'll know your palate is reset. That's my gauge at least

A Wonderful Smoke
I can't believe how an otc brand like Carter Hall has hooked me. I still like English tobacco like White House and Sobranie and vapers, but Carter Hall is one I continuosly go to and I smoke it a lot. It is not unusual for me to smoke several bowls a day and I rarely get tired of it. It's a wonderful smoke.

A nice, "Easy Goin' Smoke".
It seems Carter Hall gets a lot of praise as a good OTC pipe tobacco. In my opinion Carter Hall offers a soft, easy-going smoke with hints of nutty flavor in a sweet natural tobacco setting. It's not complex...it's just easy to like. You guys at Pipes & Cigars deliver great service on my orders too. Thanks!

Customer Testimonials
There is written, that this is non aromantic, but there is a slight aroma on the top of this blend. Very gentle aromatic, but I prefer heavier blends.
JM of St. Mary, MT
This may be the most underrated tobacco around. It's certainly Middleton's best, and competes well with higher-priced tobaccos from other manufacturers. Lights and burns well, mild taste, rarely bites...and it's inexpensive. Just bought the big tin for aging with high expectations. The topping is mild and sweet and doesn't interfere with the tobacco flavors; it's sort of a raisin or light plum taste...really tasty. This one is great for beginners too. Take your Uncle Squinty's advice, and get some of this stuff. I'll bet you'll love it.
PS of Faribault, MN
I have stated most of my background information in my previous review of Mixture No. 79. So, I'll get right to work with my review of Carter Hall. I can't say enough good things about this OTC blend. It burns well, taste great from start to finish, and is always consistently good. I was very satisfied with the 14 oz tin which I purchased. The aroma out of the can is also wonderful. It has a sweet mild friendly, easy going taste. It definitely makes me feel relaxed and adds to my joy of pipe smoking. It is also a good bargan for its quality. I have recently tried Prince Albert in the pouch from my local convenience store and purchased a pouch of Sir Walter Raleigh from Pipes and Cigars in an effort to find a more strait forward plane tobacco and burley tasting blend. I plan to make a final decision on what to smoke regularly between Carter Hall, Prince Albert, and Sir Walter Raleigh. However, I will always have a healthy respect and admiration for Carter Hall. Its like spending time with an old Friend you've known for a long time. Again, Hats off to Pipes and Cigars for their superior quality, selection, and service.

CR of Tucson, AZ
I have to admit, when I first started smoking a pipe a little over a year ago I HATED this tobacco. I guess my palate was not ready for burley blends yet, but on a whim I decided to give it another chance. Now I see what everyone is talking about! This tobacco is a sweet, toasty, no-fuss classic that everyone should try at least once. If you don't like it at first, try it again you may find yourself smoking this incessantly like I do.
CS of Pittsburgh, PA
Today I compared a fresh pouch of Carter Hall to Hearth & Home's Chatham Manor. I used a new MM Eaton cob pipe. Have to say I much preferred CH. The CH burned cooler with no bite and lasted longer. The smoke was also richer and a bit more flavorful, though both tobaccos are very mild. Easy to keep lit and burns down to a gray-white ash. Chatham manor is a good smoke, but takes more work to keep it lit; thus it burns Faster, hotter and with some bite. In the little Eaton, a bowlful seems gone in a flash. CH may become my go-to smoke.
RY of Lyons, NY
CH is probably the comfort food of the pipe tobaccos. It's not fancy or complicated. It is my meat and potatoes all day smoke. It also blends well with others. Nobody complains in the room when I smoke it. Burns good in any bowl shape. I don't get any bite with it. When something is simple, plain, and good you don't have to go into an in depth explanation of why something should taste good. Try it and enjoy it for what it is, a very good all day smoke.
JR of Hydro, OK
After two years of pipe smoking, this has become my go to smoke.
JL of Far Rockaway, NY
I've smoked this on and off many times and every time I try something different, I want this ! A nice light burley /vs blend. Its nutty with a slight fruity cream soda flavor and aroma. Its not goopy and syrupy ! It just sweet enough. I always return to this and Prince Albert. Never let down with either one !
TS of Folsom, PA
I still remember where I bought my first pouch of Carter Hall, it was in a gas station mini-mart on Williamsbridge Rd in the Bronx. It was all they had and I was wasn't expecting much - boy was I wrong. This is the tobacco that made it clear that I liked burley blends. It has a great smell in the pouch, packs and lights easily, and is very forgiving to fast-paced smoker. And honestly, I love the taste - and its even better in corn-cob pipe. I've spent a lot more on other name brands but I always come back to Carter Hall.
GC of Ardsley, NY
On internet forums, Carter Hall is affectionately known as a 'codger' brand. Like Prince Albert and Sir Walter Raleigh, it's been a faithful, drug-store standby for decades. I tried it out on the (basically, constant and boundlessly enthusiastic) recommendation of a forum I visit. Believe the hype! This is everything people say it is, and so much more (for so much less!). An affordable, beautiful smoker with a nice, mild flavor, and a room note that won't have the wife or GF chasing you out of the house. Winner winner, chicken dinner.
JN of Los Angeles, CA
Good stuff and great in a cob! Very similar to Prince Albert.
BW of Pomona, CA
I must admit that I was a true snob when it came to OTC tobacco, until a friend of mine insisted that I give it a try. I'm glad I did, because I now keep it on hand continuously. It has become part of my regular rotation, as both a stand alone, as well as a pallet cleanser between some of my more potent mixes. It is a nice cool smoke and has a great room note and flavour. It is worth saying that it smokes beautifully through both briar and cob, albeit a bit more butter sweet through a cob. I do enjoy it through both. A great little smoke this.
JH of Neenah, WI
I've smoked pipes on and off most of my life. I started with Carter Hall in the 80's and I'm still with it. I cannot stand the sweet blends. Just keep it simple and easy to smoke. LR. Brunswick, GA
SR of Brunswick, GA
I just recently picked up a tin and it's been my everyday smoke since. Always smooth and mild to the bottom of the bowl with minimal relighting. I have more expensive tinned and bulk tobaccos, too, and they're excellent. But nothing beats CH for a go to smoke any time of the day. Don't listen to the snobs that turn their collective noses at OTC or "drugstore" brands.
TG of Crown Point, IN
A mild smoke. As previously mentioned, not much flavor but mixes well with other tobaccos. Tames the harshest blends. This is my back up tobacco and I plan to always keep some on hand.

A great American classic Has the typical Burly nuttiness that is oh so delicious.

Classic Virginia, Burley blend. Simple and straightforward. Light nuttiness which improves with time. Can get harsh if smoked too fast.

This is a good simple smoke. I enjoy it all day, and it has no bad after taste. Not much in the flavor department, but simple Burley for all day smoking. Sugar Barrel was much better, R.I.P. Sugar Barrel.

This is the 1st tobacco I smoked in the mid 1970"s. I've smoked a lot of different tobaccos but always return to Carter Hall. It's a well behaved smoke that has that old time taste and aroma. It smokes quite good in a corn cob pipe. I have used it mixed in stuff I wasn't wild about and it usually makes it better. I have told my family that I want to be put in the ground with a pouch of Carter Hall, one of my Cob pipes and a bottle of PBR. I recommend it to young/new smokers who have been overwhelmed by all the sweet aromatics they tried.

Great tasting classic American tobacco that will become an instant favorite. Well priced, burns slow, great taste, aftertaste that makes me think of walnuts or almond. Great for first time smokers or those who enjoys a comfortable tobacco with nice room note.

I am officially a huge fan. I usually enjoy classic American blends, so when I ordered some I was very excited to try it out. I was not disappointed. CH has for sure become my usual and go to blend when breaking in a new pipe or looking for something easy and pleasant to smoke.

a very good straightforward blend. The small packs are good to have stashed in the car as a backup. I was on an out of town job and stayed longer than planned. It was nice not to have to find pipe tobacco in an unfamiliar area.
